The ruling Kulabis are reliant on Russian funding, and the resurrection of an Islamic mosque suggests the Islamists are yet again establishing a stronghold. A bus rumbles through the shimmering heat to a Russian checkpoint. Behind it, 1300 miles of barbed wire mark Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan. The bus contains anxious Gharmis returning home from Afghan refugee camps. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, they were driven out by a vicious civil war between their own Islamic forces and the Soviet-backed Kulabis. They now return, fearing reprisals from a new Kulabi government, but hoping after four years to resume normal life.

the revival of Islam among Tadjiks is much faster because Islam was very strong among Tadjiks in pre-Soviet era. Afterall, it was the Tadjiks that introduced Islam to the central Asian Turkics (Notable one: Ismoil Somoni is well known for spreading Islam among Central Asians).

Very pitty that Tajik killed each other with the help and support of Russia and Uzbekistan and destroyed their country. Over 150 thousand people killed and about million intelent people had left the country. The economy had been destroyed and become the country to the one of most poorest. Still now there is no jobs in the country and about 3 million migrants are had to find some survival money in Russia, Europe and other countries

The bottom line is that peoples' freedom to choose their religion and government is still being repressed by European powers and USA. NO net change over the last 200 years, or really the last 1000. Poor people. Unfortunately, in Russia this war is totally unknown and I think it was the reason why Tajiks received a harsh reception in Russia, being discriminated and faced inhospitality for decades living in Russia. Peace to all.

Tajikistan was never part of Afg. Khurasan is the real name of what is today called Afghanistan and areas north of the river Amu are historically part of Khurasan - like Bukhara Samarqand Dushanbe Ferghana and so on. Amir Habibullah Khan & Amir Habibulah Kalakani both wanted to launch massive Jihad to free Persianate Central Asia - but both were prevented - one was assassinated & the other was fought by Russian armies in the north and tribal running dogs of the British from the south.

They keep calling the pro-government group in the Tajikistan civil war pro-communist. But the Tajikistan Socialist Soviet Republic was renamed Republic of Tajikistan and became capitalist. Marxism Leninism ( Stalinism ) was death by 1992, as former Stalinist bureaucrats turned nationalist like Emomalii Rahmon. This civil war was a sectarian battle between rival ethnic groups. One was supported by Moscow and the other by the Taliban and Al-Qeida. This had nothing to do with communism!

@infiltratorr 1Yes there are powers working towards breaking up Pakistan but they were hit by a recent set back. Pakistan it self is geographically very stable many great civilizations have been part of this land. Afghanistan that are in Pakistan are mostly refugees wanting to go back to Afghanistan after the war is over. I went with a news team to that area to interview people and I met only 1 pro Pak division. The rest just wanted peace, from Taliban and loved the army for getting rid of them

@zoeyvoey okay to be real, not all pashtuns have the same idea there are more pakistan pashtuns to that want to be pakistanis than pakistani pashtuns that want to be with afghanistan, so far at this streek, the awnsers to such question revolves around the taliban.... And why not Afghan refugees who want to join and become pakistanis and not afghans anymore like their fellow pakistani pashtuns had done hundreds of years ago....

I have lived in pakistan for 10 years and i know that a pakistani pakhton dose not call himself afghan. brainwashed by punjabees, but it dose not means that we have to drop our claim on our land. Why doesn't Tajikistan just join Pakistan? That would increase stability, food markets from the south will open up and belonging to a larger country will greatly help, as the biggest problem of Tajikistan is it's small size.

first of all im deeply upset about ur foul words. we dont use those words. anyway u may be angry. btw u know in the 6th century they used water, dry clay, miswak etc. it means they used whatever they could. god doesnt want ur whole day to worship him. 5 times a day its very easy. it takes only 30 or some minutes all together. i enjoy when i stand for prayer. if u love ur parents u should also remember ur creator.
