  • Most of the time dogs can express their glands on their own, but occasionally some dogs have problems doing so. This owner asked me to do her dog's glands due to health reasons.

    • @@user-dh1yq5cz9v Its the scent glands around the rear, used to say 'this is me'. They can get blocked up like any gland in the body can, which isn't a good thing. Expressing them is... squishing out the gunk.

    • We occasionally have the vets express them for our senior dogs when they visit, just to be sure they're cleared...although sometimes from stress they'll obligingly release them at us in protest of *going* to the vet, so there's that!

      @Samicat476@Samicat476 Жыл бұрын
    • @@user-dh1yq5cz9v they're oil glands that scent their poop/help mark their territory. Older dogs often have trouble expressing, so the oil builds up until it causes discomfort/leaks randomly. The concentrated oil is quite stinky, like raw fish, so regular expressing by vet/groomer/comfortable owners can reduce the build up and the chance of poorly placed stink.

  • You are a brave woman. Expressed glands of a dog is the most wretched smell. Had a Bassett myself that expressed them at the vet as a result of stress. I could still smell the aroma after he was bathed and we got in the car. Btw, I am a nurse so smells are a plenty in my line of work and expressed glands are #1 worst smelling bodily fluid IMHO! The glamour is in the relief you give dog owners not having to do it themselves!

    • @@engagingbus7991 The worst smells I've smelled: I've smelled extremely rotted fish (My kid sister left minnows in a bucket in the basement of our house but put another bucket over top so it took us a long time to find the mystery source of the smell), I've smelled a rotting deer that was hit by a car and in a ditch that I had to walk past in hot August everyday to get to my college. I've smelled my dog sprayed by a skunk which actually is completely different from the smell you typically identify as "skunk Smell" when you are up close. I've smelled burning broccoli (mom was steaming and all the water evaporated and she forgot about it). My new pup has extremely potent farts. I describe them as "Sharp" like describing aged cheeses. A summer campground pota-potty in the hottest part of summer used by large amounts of people. Lastly, I've smelled rotting meat + brussel sprouts + cheese and everything else you'll find in a fridge and deep freezer... I was on vacation with my family for three weeks and there was a major storm and tornado that took out the power for my apartment for multiple days during a hot summer and I got back weeks later. Rating these top disgusting smells it'd be; #1) My dog sprayed by a skunk. Closest I can describe it is when I stupidly mixed bleach with vinegar which results in chlorine gas which can be deadly. It didn't smell like skunk at all, up close it's like extremely strong chemicals and it burns in your nose and eyes. #2) The rotting disgustingness in my apartment, especially opening up the deep freezer. I gagged so bad! #3) The rotting minnows when I lifted the bucket within the bucket and discovered them. It's an extra acidic type of rot. #4) The dead deer (It probably would have been even worse if I got closer to it or it was in an enclosed space like a home etc) #5) My pup's silent but deadlys #6) The summer Porta-potty #7) Burning broccoli I have not smelled anal glands so I don't know where they might rank on my scale. ** Important note: I have a terrible sense of smell and have all my life so it's got to be extra bad to be ranked by me.

  • Just wanted to say our equi-groomer came in the mail about ten minutes ago. We have a Nebelung named Cloud (because he is just a fluffy little gray raincloud) and not only is he in love with it, he lost 1/3 of his mass in fur from brushing one side. As someone who is constantly plucking little gray cotton balls out of the carpet and vacuuming three times every time, I think this brush is going to be my new best friend.

He ate her food and peed in her bowl before eating his own food. He stole my milk bottle when I was a baby. I guess his owners before us had named him Booger for a reason.

    • @@cleopatracatra2097 if you can learn how to do it yourself, it would actually be healthier for your cat. Felines are highly sensitive to stress, and frequent visits to the vet are hard on their systems. Your vet may not have explained it thoroughly, but they were likely trying to teach you that for the benefit your cat’s health. They could have just not said anything at all and kept taking your money, but your vet understands how detrimental frequent stress can be for your cat’s long term health. I’m a CVT, so I’m incredibly picky about vets, and your comment tells me that you are lucky enough to have a really good one :)!
