IT'S A JOY | 2021 REMASTER | We Happy Few Song feat. Dan Bull
We Happy Few is a game about surviving in the drug-drenched town of Wellington Wells in a dystopian alternate 1960s where the Germans won the war, everyone is forced to be happy and nothing is as it seems.
I always loved this track ever since I released it back in 2018. But at the same time, I was very early in my music career and the track was perhaps a little too ambitious for me at the time. More layers of harmonies and vocals than I'd ever attempted and a more complex style of musical composing and structure than a typical rap number. So whilst I loved the track, it was always a little rough around the edges.
So I thought it was about time for the remaster treatment! The fantastic oo oxygen has reworked the track, improving and balancing the vocals and instrumentation, reining in the harmonies and fleshing out the track with new sounds and instruments for a fuller sound!
In addition, I've also revisited the video, upscaling the project to full 4k, fixing a few minor visual bugs and also adding a little more visual polish here and there!
I'm really excited to share this one with you all and I hope you don't mind another smaller project as I am knee deep in new house things. I spent most of the last week up a ladder painting ceilings...

LYRICS: VERSE 1: Lovely day for it, how do you do? And we just had to pay for it out of the truth But who can remember? So who'd really care? Exactly how all of the bodies got there With a hop and a skip and the pop of a pill We will all be forgiven for all that we've killed And we've never been happier (And we've never been happier) No we'll never be happier (No we'll never be happier) A brilliant day is dawning A million smiles are forming Our shimmering isles are all enthralled No there’s nothing like conforming Perish the thought of mourning Did you ignore the warnings? All negative thoughts abhorred My Lord! Did you take your joy this morning? Ask anybody in Wellington Wells They'll tell you it's terribly swell Delirious denizens dwell where there's nary a speck between heaven and hell They say that the empire fell Oh, but you never could tell! You say you remember it well? You'd better forget it or else! Why try to better yourself? Reach for the medical shelf Just take your medicine, death and the pestilence melt into pleasant locales Another rebellion quelled Dust off your suspenders and belts It's horrendous to dwell so remember how splendid it felt to surrender yourself... ...The roses we grow have a terrible smell... CHORUS: It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy To be among we happy few It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy VERSE 2: Well well, welcome to Wellington Wells Hear the tintinnabulations of the resonant bells As every resident tells you when they gush about our little town No need to rush, hush, you're welcome to settle down Better not let me down You're not a downer are you? Get off the bench and quell that frown right now, Keanu Try not to make a scene, let's keep this place serene Unless you want a cricket bat print in the place your face had been Don't be concerned, that was just a little bitter lyric The world in which you live is every little bit idyllic Because if we even sniff discontent we're quick to kill it Ahem, please forgive my sense of humour, I'm a wit; satiric They call me Uncle Jack I'm bringing jungle back Dropping silver tongue twisting numbers on your mumble rap Now be my guest and enjoy your day And don’t forget to keep ingesting your joy all day BRIDGE: Not a frown to be found in our haven from gloom It's astounding what our medication can do As our town's burning down in a rainbow of hues Even the sky wouldn't dare to be blue CHORUS: It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy To be among we happy few It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy VERSE 3: I've found a downer! Hunt him down! Surround the bounder! Drown him! Pound him into powder! Then head down to the grounds for a round of rounders! (HOORAY!) If you're caught in a rotten, improper mood We'll stop at nothing to swaddled and coddle you Throttle and bottle you, Bobby will cudgel you Into the pond ‘til your body is otter food Quarter you, jauntily torture you Until you've thought all the thoughts that we order you Sporting a jollier point of view If you're not enjoying it what is the point of you? We've just the thing to stop the rabble, It’s Grin, pop some tablets No matter what the matter is Sins forgot. Fabulous Cast off with the ardent misfits Lamenting the garden districts So throw your doses in the bin History's made by those who grin The fact is you can't react not knowing what REDACTED No need to grieve if you can't see diseases we've REDACTED Happiness and truth, we simply view them through a lens, REDACTED Life's a breeze when you can leave uneasy deeds REDACTED (I'm happy.) (I'm happy.) (I'm happy!) CHORUS: It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy To be among we happy few It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy It's a Joy To be among we happy few It's a Joy It's a Joy And we've never been happier No we've never been happier

Everyone talks a lot about the "Even the sky wouldn't dare to be blue." but the "The roses we grow have a terrible smell" hits hard, its the first little "joyless" lyric.
I say this with total honesty. The fact that the chorus sounds like The Beatles is incredible, this is an amazing song that truly encompasses the themes and events of We Happy Few, just pop your pills and forget the stench of reality as the colors brighten and the clouds fly past in psychedelic swirls.

*Joyous

OMG CHI CHI I love your music
I know that the developers of We Happy Few were a little disappointed in how the game was released but honestly I do hope they revisit the gloriously, brightly-colored, orwellian dystopia where all sadness is punished by death or exile. *_Wellington Welles._* _Where everything is a Joy._ This remaster is honestly a beautiful love-letter to the almost forgotten survival sim with a story that always leaves me with a smile... Or a frown... Hard to remember now, though doesn't matter. Just pop a joy, forget, and let the clouds pass you by.
Honestly the game had so much potential, it just turned into a super generic survival game with crafting. I really wish they did something more interesting like a BioShock-type single player story game.
@@D2Davis This was my main problem with the game. I wished for something much more linear. The survival crafting aspect just didn't make it for me.
@@rocketjumper5419 The creation of the game was fairly hazy from kickstarter to being pushed to the Xbox One. I thought the survival parts of the game were interesting but didn't hold the weight needed for a survival game while the singleplayer parts showed a lot of polish but were still reflective of the survival gameplay. The major reason it failed as well is because they kept pushing it as a Bioshock type game in marketing when the team advidely wanted it to be acknowledged as an indie game as to not throw fake assumptions onto them... Though that ended up with the lackluster release we got. The true version of the game is similar to the sandbox mode where there is no story and you are just trying to escape, similar to Sir You Are Being Hunted. I feel like the DLCs were good for that single player experience but I think a multiplayer survival mode would still be interesting to have a swing at since that is a major thing nowadays. Also they missed a major opportunity to have a Bobby Themed DLC where you play survival but as a Bobby off his Blackberry but having to fake being high of Joy as he cracks down other "Downers" to keep himself out of the line of suspicion
I should start playing it again. Never finished the story
@@rocketjumper5419 ngl I feel like it would of been good in a similar style to dishonored, no idea why though.

I really enjoy the creative use of subtitles in this video The Wellies get a joyful font The man in black has the redacted font Uncle Jack gets a his own font too But my favorite part is how there are lyrics that are never spoken because they're redacted. It's something you could never do with audio alone, it feels like it really takes advantage of the video aspect of the music video. This goes doubly because many people seem to think adding subtitles are a chore, so it's very satisfying to see someone demonstrating their potential to add to the experience.

I had no idea this genre had a name, this is the first time I hear the term nerdcore. well I can call myself a real nerdcore enthusiast now!
If you are looking for another good nerdcore rapper Mc Frontalot is great, i am not sure if he is still making stuff but he was the best.
3:57 I love how he just slides into frame creepily and that smile, disturbing!! I love this portrayal of character
I don't think I have to tell you that this feels like a new shot of adrenaline into the song, and it feels like a completely new song. The revamped bass and instruments for the 4 piece band, plus the occasional cracks all through it and in Bulls section through to the darkness under Wellington Wells show how much more there is to this than the first one did. I love them both, and the first Its a Joy will always have a special place in my heart... but the new effects sends this one into the stratosphere. Who wrote the Uncle Jack rap, you or Dan? Or was it a collaboration, and now you've remastered it, would you have liked it to be rewritten in any way? The only issue now is[REDACTED]. [THERE ARE NO ISSUES. ENJOY YOUR DAY.]
Thank you so much! :D Dan wrote his own verse for this track. :)
the fact that the redacted parts (including the entire redacted cry for help) have also been fantasically written to fit the rhythm and rhyme scheme even though they will never actuall be sung is just the perfect touch on what already was perfection
at the end of the song, he mentions how he has updated our prescription of joy. If you listen to the original compared to this, you will realise that the older one sounded a lot gloomier and less powerful, as if joy hadn't been refined and perfected, as opposed to now where they have made joy an all powerful substance that has zero flaws. Brilliant wordplay and acknowledgement of your difference in styles.
The line "even the sky wouldn't dare to be blue" still leaves me with chills.

this remaster continues to be an absolute joy (pun very much intended), i listened to the original version and gods this is such a refreshing update. the mixing and vocal performance itself are so much better, and the music video didnt even need to be changed because of how good the OG is. as per usual a great song
Oh my goodness, this song just makes you FEEL. This sort of dystopia is so up my alley and the lyrics reflect this concept so well, with many standout lines (“even the sky wouldn’t dare to be blue” - that took me a second) . Not to mention it’s a straight up gorgeous song that has so many parts I just keep repeating (especially “a brilliant day is forming” part). It nails the Beatles/Monkees vibe, and I particularly think their use as a musical contrast to the subject matter just works so perfectly. Also, funny thing, I watched some of your stream of this game and that rat piñata part you said would have been more harrowing if it weren’t in all the trailers. This video is where I first saw it and it actually really freaked me out lol, it really highlights the depravity joy covers up. God I just really love this concept. It’s just so sad.

YOOOO IM SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW IT COMES OUT SEEING HOW GOOD THE ORIGINAL SONG IS Edit: I'm noticing more elaborate editing and visuals with somewhat remix or hardcore like audio compared to the original (the voices are more harmonious and the instruments have a clearer beat)
I really like that the remaster made the Joy Doctor's voice reverbed, almost sounding like it's coming from a megaphone. Makes him sound way more creepy and intimidating.
It's honestly impressive how so many seemingly small changes make such a big difference. You did great!

Everytime I see you cover a games thematics or Characterization I'm astounded by how well you can fuse music into it, as I had stated in a few videos of yours a long while ago. To keep this brief, you need to get paid by developers to make a song for their games your that impressive.
The chorus sounds so much better here! I also love basically everything about this remastered, I'm gonna be enjoying this one alot in the next few weeks I can tell
I remember being around when the original version of the song came out, but now hearing this new version I can safely say that this truly feels improved on. The drums are definitely given more presence and make the harmony and beat feel more lively than before. I'm not sure how you did it, but you made a banger of a banger Stupes! Hope everything is well with the new house, and until our next joyous meeting!
