Tonight's Ottawa Senators game had a very strange moment where Thomas Chabot, accidentally (we hope), hit his teammate with a hockey stick. I've never seen anything like this, totally weird situation. We'll cover this and the Ottawa Senators and Nashville Predators game on today's NHL video!
It's a less worse version of Ballard smashing his stick on the side of Vokoun's head, needing him to be stretchered off and getting a concussion

I've seen that happen in a Florida match on the ice. Vokoun got scored on and Ballard went to smash his stick against the post but got the side of Vokoun's head. Vokoun was stretchered off the ice and was injured on the play and was bleeding from the ear. But I agree it is extremely rare, thankfully

Having worked 5years in hockey, something similar happened to me twice. Both times I was escorting a player back to the locker room after a match penalty to unlock it for them. The first was a water bottle so no big deal just a good talk about respect, the second was a stick thrown from across the corridor that broke my glasses. That one I didn't like so much let me tell ya
Official? Your league should have four backs especially when players are in their formative years. They need to learn respect and discipline early on or they become thugs on and off the ice so you’re doing society a favour. I love rough and tough hockey like the next guy and still see a place for it non the sport but the days of don cherry sending guys out for revenge is a bit much.
@MisterMister5893 nah I was with a team. These 17-21 years old players are a lot more disciplined and respectful than you might think. But in 5years you meet a few bad apples.
Lol ya! I was reffing a high school game, dude got mad with his goalie and cross checked him in the head at the end of the game.
what was the punishment for the broken glasses?
@jackoblllllllll Well I'm a gentle giant kinda guy, but I broke his sticks and many many pieces and yelled at him like an old sea captain, which you'd never expect from a big peaceful guy like me. The kid was black; swear to God he was looking white when I was done with him 😆 I told that to the bosses and told them it was open and shut, he had his lesson. But the head coach insisted to have me come into the room and made him apologize to me in front of everyone after the game. I think he made the right move. It was a playoffs game, in these circumstances I barely saw the players outside the ice. It's like there's a bubble around the whole staff and no one gets close to the room 1-2hours before and after the game. To keep everyone focused. Still he broke the unwritten rule and made me walk in the middle of it for an apology, it was kinda sweet For the glasses: I looked like Bubble for a week with hockey tape holding them on my face, until the new pair paid by the organization arrived haha
I remember seeing Al MacInnis break his stick in frustration on the boards in front of his bench, unaware teammate Darren Turcotte had his ungloved hand on the boards. Turcotte had not long come back from an ear drum injury caused by a cotton swab
I actually just watched this from a rock em sock em video.
Yep, I remember that one. Macinnis looked like he wanted to die afterwards. I vaguely remember the announcers saying he went back in the hall and was throwing up in disgust at himself over it.
@@kftc1980 I remember something similar. All I can find online now is that MacInnis was so upset that he didn't finish the game either

Florida Panthers vs Atlanta Thrashers, 30.11.2009 Tomáš Vokoun was the goalie for the Panthers. Vokoun was injured by teammate Keith Ballard in a game. When Ballard hit Vokoun with an errant stick on the head. Vokoun was carried off the ice on a stretcher and was treated at a nearby hospital for an ear laceration. Vokoun had just given up a goal to Ilya Kovalchuk of the Atlanta Thrashers and Ballard went to break his stick on the goalpost in frustration but caught Vokoun instead. It must have been horrible pain for Tomáš
Jomboy actually has a breakdown of this. For a lot of the game he was sitting at the end of the bench so he was the last person on the bench. Probably gets distracted by the game and forgets that someone is to his right.
I remember playing football in high school and after a game we lost, my teammate yeeted one of his cleats across the damn locker room out of anger and it hit my head making it bleed. He was apologizing to me after that and during school the following week. Then at practice I rocked him so hard his body folded when he hit the ground. (To be fair, i blindsided him lol) and he looked up at me and said “I deserved that…” We’re still friends to this day and we still have a laugh at this particular memory lol
Well I hope u learned trying to do a dirty a hit and give someone a concussion isn't ok dosent matter what they did your not defending yourself your head hunting concussions are serious it seems like u think dirty hits are ok as revenge
@@lilwoodiewood3457 meanwhile this probably happened like 30 years ago ....unless you have Intel that he may, to do this day, still be violent by cheap shotting his coworkers??
Thank you for explaining this! I was watching the game and even the announcers were confused on what exactly happened. There were many missed calls on both sides. The refs seemed to let something slide on one check but then call it on the next check. I think it crossed the line from a hard hitting game to really frustrating both sides that leads to more retaliatory hitting which can be dangerous.
but he shoulda hit himself in the face with his stick for his lacklustre, lackadaisical defense on the first goal
I don't know what game you were watching but the announcers had the replay up and showed exactly what happened on the channel I was watching and even explained it and went back to the replay where Chabot took the hit and then went to the bench saying that that's what led up to it and then this is what happened
@@Y.A.A.E.G._Games Clearly we were both watching the same game. However, the broadcast I was watching didn't show that it was his own teammate that hit him. They replayed the on ice hit but quickly realized it was not the same player who was hurt on the bench. Maybe they cleared it up later and I missed it. Again there were hits both sides got away with that they shouldn't have.
HA! Did he just forget he wasn't at the end of the bench??
thats what it looks like to me.
i love the reaction like ''i'm alright man fuuuuuuck dude be careful"
After he did it I expected him to say "You can hit me, just don't tell mom."
"I would like to smash my stick on the bench in frustration." Roll a strength check at disadvantage. "... two nat 1s..." Your stick breaks but so does Hamonic's face.
I think Harmonic would have been really hurt by that whack from Chabot's stick! I found this incident to be bizarre and Chabot should really be embarrassed about his profound act of idiocy!
Something similar happened in St Louis several years ago. I know it involved Al MacInnis but I can't remember if he did it or he was the one that got hit. One of the players was coming back to the bench and slammed their stick on the top of the boards, right onto the other's hand. It turned out to be a pretty bad injury, as the player hit was on IR for a bit. I can't find the video either but I remember seeing the highlight on ESPN.
I've been looking for that play too. Trying to remember who he hit. Pretty sure Al was the one swinging the stick.
I think this was in a rock em sock em tape
Damn, he even lost two teeth from it. 😂
Thoughts on Kris Letang return? Sure, he didn't put up any points, but those hits and blocks, just 12 days after a stroke... The guy definitely wanted to prove, to the people, that he wasn't about to retire!
His doctors said that hockey won't have any affect on his condition. It's a heart related birth defect, it won't be his last stroke but playing won't worsen it.
@@Bigdaddy93413 LOL congenital defects don't cause strokes. And if they did, his doctors would not clear him to return to play... ever.

That’s why they say “leave it on the ice.” Benches are ice adjacent and bad things happen. Scarier yet, what if that was your best goal scorer and is out for weeks? Hope he learned a lesson.
Chabot is so nice for giving his stick to his teammate 😌 so wholesome
I saw one in czech hockey if I remember right. One team conceded a goal and their defense player wanted to smash the stick over the goal, but he missed and slapped his own goalkeeper over the helm while he was trying to get up :D :D it was pretty hilarious
Al MacInnis, 1998 or so. He is coming to the bench and is frustrated. He slashes his stick on the top of the boards and didn't realize his teammate, Darren Turcotte, had his hand on there without the glove on. Turcotte breaks his hand, I think, and MacInnis was so sorry for what he did he literally went to the dressing room and threw up.
Marchand and Wilson both got suspended 6 games for this hit
I love that clip of the tablet being thrown, remember that in the playoffs last year
The first hit he's delivered all season!
Closest thing I can think of was something in the NBA. 2001 or 02. Marcus Camby on the Knicks gets provoked into a fight by the Spurs Danny Ferry. Marcus runs up and takes a wild overhand swing at him. The guy gets out of the way as Marcus from his forward momentum on the punch, accidentally bashes heads with his own coach, Jeff Van Gundy who was trying to intervene and break it up. Van Gundy was on the ground for a while there.
His almost high looking wait that was me? face is awesome
He thought he was beside the boards, didn't realize his teamate was there
As one who has worked in the dungeon of SAP Center and at the team bench, I can say with certainty that the players take out their frustration on almost everything. Many sticks get smashed. Water bottles get thrown. Chairs get thrown. If it isn’t bolted down, it is fair game for frustration relief.
What a bunch of spoiled apes. I played Jr A lacrosse and we never smashed anything except the other team.

Don Maloney did something similar to John Davidson too. He meant to break his stick over the net but got Davidson in the leg by accident. Hurt him too.

Ballard on Vokoun is the only similar incident I know of.
That's probably a Hamonic reaction from adding pissed off to an ice rink
That was a motivational tomahawk to the chops! Obviously he will get a few days of free smoothies
I remember in the late 70's, Defenseman Dave Maloney of the Rangers screwed up, a goal was scored and he went to hit the crossbar to break his stick...but missed and wacked goalie John Davidson on the back of the leg. Not pleasant for JD.
I can imagine Chabot saying “please don’t cry, you get one free hit”
The thumbnail would make a good renaissance painting
That would stop me from ever breaking my stick. I would make sure I never did that again.
He didn’t hit him with his stick. He smacked his stick off the side of the glass and the stick broke and hit Hamonic. Pretty funny to watch on live tv tho lol
He didn’t hit him with his stick?? Oh. ok, it was the glass that made the stick HIT him. Surely you jest. If you meant, 'He didn't MEAN to hit him with his stick.' alright. Otherwise... well intentionality does not absolve him of culpability. 'Don't blame me Hammy; it was the stick's fault for breaking.' Sounds more like a five year old's reasoning to me.

I remember in the early 80's, the Rangers were playing at home and the opposing team scored a weak goal on John Davidson. Dave Maloney, Rangers' defenseman, went to hit the crossbar with his stick in frustration and missed his target only to mistakenly slam his stick on Davidson's hamstring, injuring him.
I accidentally speared my goalie right before a game. He made as if he was sliding left in the crease, towards the post and towards me. I was facing the same was as he was. I casually flicked my stick at his (I thought) right pad. He was just stretching and the stick rode up the inside of the left pad and I got him under the cup. There was a slight delay in starting the game. Oooo I was very unpopular with my team for a good while.

This is the sort of thing that would DEFINITELY happen to me if I got angry and wanted to break something lol. That’s why I have had to learn to control my emotions…
It seems fairly simple to me. He was mad, slammed his stick, but either forgot or didn't realize someone was sitting next to him. Considering he almost got the trainer too, it's kind of proof he wasn't mad at Hamonic. Just fogged out for a moment there.
