Who are the Houthis? | 5 Minute History

The Houthis in Yemen have recently made the news for their involvement in halting shipping through the Bab al-Mandab Straight, prompting a naval response from a coalition involving the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Bahrain, the Netherlands, and Canada. The Houthis have been a household name in Yemen since at least the early 2000s, and played a key role as a fighting force in the Yemeni Civil War, starting in earnest in 2014. At current, they control large parts of the country, including the capital Sanaa.

  • @0:24 they're not named after "hussien al-houthi", Houthi is derived from "Houth" which is a location/area in Yemen. They're attributed to where they're from by adding the letter "i", since they're from Houth they're Houthi-. If they were from Aden, they'd be Aden-i, or if Sanaa they'be be Sanaan-i

Even then he remembered it as potentially hostile, so unlike other comments I had taken an interest before. I remember seeing a documentary years back about Jews who used to live in this area, but have since been driven out in the face of hostility such as that described.

    • Maybe you’re thinking of Saleh al-Arouri, a deputy leader of Hamas for decades until his death this year? Idk any Saleh in the Houthi movement 🤷‍♂️ The Saleh in Yemen is Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was President of North Yemen since 1978, then when the country unified in 1990 became president of all Yemen, and long overstayed his welcome remaining president until the Arab Spring revolts (which the Houthis took part in) deposed him in 2012.

I can't access the article cited for that wild claim (even normal ways around paywalls don't work), but I've never seen that claim echoed anywhere else. The closest grain of truth it is that Saleh vocally declared support for the Houthis when they launched their 2015 civil war against Hadi, so Saleh's own supporters might have flocked to the Houthi side and thus probably led to their success in that war. But I'm even dubious of that because he did a 180 and went back to supporting Saudi Arabia in 2017, so he got assassinated by the Houthis - but public support for the Houthi cause wasn't significantly hampered by this. And he definitely absolutely was never a formal part of the Houthi movement, much less its command structure or pulling its strings as that Wiki sentence states.

Two other branches of the Hamdans are the Bakil and Hashid tribes, who have been known as the “Wings of the Imam” for over a thousand years, since the first Zaidi Imamate was founded. Which makes sense because Zaidi Islam is popular in northern Yemen, which is where Banu Hamdan tribes all live, so they are probably all majority Zaidi.

  • I am Yemeni 🇾🇪, and I want to clarify some of the wrong things that were mentioned in the report. First, the Houthis are not agents of Iran despite being allies. Second, in 2017, the Houthis did not turn against Ali Abdullah Saleh, but rather he was the one who fought them, and they did not kill him in his home. Rather, he is on his way to escape out of Yemen. Thirdly, I said in the report that the reason for the coalition launching a war against the Houthis was because of the Houthis’ coup against Abd Rabbuh Hadi, and this is a mistake. In fact, the war was announced in Washington, D.C., while Abd Rabbuh did not know about the war at all. He appeared in an interview in which he said that he was surprised by the start of the war... He also added that the Houthis did not hijack the ship, but rather they ordered it to return and not proceed, then they warned it, and when they refused to obey the orders, the Houthis applied international maritime protocols that authorize the seizure of the ship as it had violated the orders and insisted To cross, which is considered aggressive behavior.

But hey if all jews are terrible and attacking anyone associated with them is fine to kill/kidnap or torture then all muslims are terrorist and anyone associating with them is fine to kill/kidnap and torture. I think your antisemetic brain dosent understand that the state of israel and jews are diffrent things. By your logic all muslim nations should have been destroyed to the last man after the first ever islamic terrorist strike. • No mention of how the conflicts you mention involved *_a genocide,_* by the Saudis (with US support), against the Yemenis? (including the Houthis [who are a people!], and the Anṣar Allah) ... And then you then describe their bombing of ships, without any mention, that they say that it is about specifically attacking ships that are going to Israel (though, to be fair, they appear to have attacked some other, unrelated, ships), or how they are saying that they'd stop, as soon as there is a cease fire, in Gaza. Anṣar Allah are bad people, sure, but lying about how bad they are, and lying about how not bad their enemies are, is completely unjustifiable. This video is clearly misleading, twisting the facts, and demonstrates a clear bias.

    • Of 22 civilian ships targetted by Houthi attacks (as of January 18th): only 4 had some sort of involvement by Israeli businessmen (as private citizens) in their operating companies; 1 had previously had an Israeli shareholder, but who had divested all stock in the company months before; 1 had cooperated with Israel previously in regards to a sister ship being warned by Houthis; and only 2 with Israel as their destination (for one, only as a stopover point); meaning a majority 14 of them had exactly 0 relations to Israel (and most not even with the US). So yeah despite their claims of only targetting ships headed for Israel, the attacks have been very indiscriminate, and most of the ships which have had any relation to Israel were bot even heading to or from it (just had some Israeli businessman involved in their corporate leadership). My impression is that Iran gave them an outdated and very speculative list of shipping vessels which may be traced back to Israel tangentially… or they just attacked randomly and got lucky a few times (as much as I loathe describing the attacking of innocent civilians as lucky).

    • @@LoudWaffle _"only 4 had some sort of involvement by Israeli businessmen"_ Israeli businessmen? Given that the issue has nothing to do with Israeli businessmen, but with whether or not they are shipping things to/from Israel, I can only assume that you said that, as a way to mislead, because the *_actually relevant_* numbers, show that they have mainly targeted ships that were going to/from Israel. It also tells me, that you are clearly just spouting propaganda lies, and I needn't waste my time, reading any more of your comment.

I've never, ever, heard anyone from the Middle East (Arab or otherwise) ever pronouncing the 'a', anywhere close to that way. The way that English speakers normally pronounce ''islam', is far closer to how Arabs say it. The Arabic pronunciation of the 'a', is [aː], BTW.
