  • Years ago I read an article in Mother Earth News that made the case for keeping the older non-productive hens in the flock. Apparently, "removing" them actually messes with the hierarchy and social makeup of the flock, which can cause a slow down in production by the younger girls. True or not, I'm going with that theory. I wouldn't feel too great about rewarding a hen which had provided me with such a healthy source of protein, by ending her life before her time. My chicken retirement program says "thanks for your service".

    @mermarseo@mermarseo Жыл бұрын
    • Here's an idea...stop reading that commie rag Mother Earth News. But yes, the hierarchy will go through changes all the time. As some alphas get older, the younger birds might challenge the order. All my birds will live a natural long life and never be sent to freezer camp.

      @Donnybrook10@Donnybrook10 Жыл бұрын
    • I’ve read this as well about the hierarchy. I just add a few new hens every couple of years. The old girls die of age. My oldest hen was 9. I lose one to a predator or accident on occasion. The poop makes great compost so they still earn their keep.

I have been seeing a lot of videos lately genuinely trying to dissuade people from having chickens, and I thought maybe this was another one of those. I've been raising backyard chickens for about 30 years not so much for eggs which are nice, but just for the fun of it and yes it can be a little expensive now with the price of food and yes free range does help, but I would be spending the money on another hobby, if I didn't have my chickens, I'm sure. When my girls quit laying and they just call themselves in retirement and keep on living and enjoying life until they die. I've never eaten one of my chickens don't even know if I could if I cooked and put it on the table. I just do it for the fun of it and enjoy eating the eggs and giving eggs to my friends. 🐣🐥🐔

I ended up with 8 roosters that were being hard on the girls, so I had to get rid of them somehow and no one wanted to take them. Neighbor offered to help me butcher them since I didn’t know how yet! We let them sit in the freezer for a month roughly before cooking one up and when we tasted it. It doesn’t taste anything like a store bought chicken! I don’t mean in a good taste either, ended up giving them to my dogs that didn’t mind eating the rooster meat at all!

  • Great video. I raised chickens as a teenager - one of my many plans to become a millionaire. My flock of 25 chicks grew to include bantam hens, ducks and geese. It was a blast and the whole family enjoyed it. Your video covered pretty much everything and I would like to add 2 points. As we lived in Upstate NY where winters were rough, we used 100 W lightbulb to not only provide additional heat in the insulated coop, but also increased the amount of "daylight" and our egg production remained robust. The other IMPORTANT point is....there is NO comparison to a fresh egg to a store-bought egg. Fresh eggs are not only tastier but they are thicker - don't spread out in a skillet as much when you fry them.

Being an only child and living in a rural area, I had no other children to play with and the chickens were like family to me. We raised chickens, turkeys, ducks, and even some game birds. All the chickens were named and one followed me all around the yard and even into the house on occasion. All of my adult life I have missed the gentle calming song of my chickens and would love to have a small flock again. Unfortunately I live alone and once in a while need to spend a few days away from home and have nobody to provide care for the birds. Maybe someday I will find a life partner who will live with me and at that point I will have chickens again as well as a few other animals.

I hung them from the trees and now our yard looks like a huge disco when the sun reflects off them. They spin around day and night and ever since I have not had any hawks attack my free range chickens.

  • Chicken keeper/gardener here…eggs and poop are pure gold! I bought more chicks when the bird flu was starting to get real, and I got extra. I supply all my people with eggs. I’ve been trading extra eggs for avocados and sourdough bread on a regular basis. We have some extra to gift the neighbors and friends on occasion. And I add an egg to our dog’s food every now and again. “With chickens and a garden you’ll never starve.”- comments section quote I love to share.

    • @@ghostboogie Chickens are omnivores, and their eggs are a high value, high priority food source for us. If I didn’t have proper chicken feed, and could not find seed, I would not let them starve. I would get them food from my pantry, and they’d get plenty from from the garden while I started farming black soldier fly larvae and meal worm. Cat food is high in protein and a good food for chickens. What about Winter? Winter isn’t really an issue with chickens, and definitely not an issue in zone 9.

As far as keeping a hen who doesn't lay eggs anymore, not only do they contribute to the creation of compost, but they huddle next to each other at night to help each other stay warm AND they help to service the rooster(s) if you have any. We let our hens live out their lives in peace.💓

I believe that number will be reduced as a means of being controlled as the world is forced into the dystopian world the WEF, the UN and the WHO want to happen. God forbid you try to feed yourself.

  • Someone probably already wrote this , but just in case, if you have plenty of space , you can build yourself a mobile chicken pen, every couple of days you move the pen to a different place in your yard , this creates many benefits to your yard or field as well as keeping the chickens happy on fresh ground always. The only con I can think of is you probably will need help to move the pen unless you only have a few birds and a really small pen. The main reason I tried it was to keep the birds safer as their are tons of coyote and fox around here. I hate killing anything, so I avoid it whenever possible, it was start shooting them or figure out a way to keep the chickens safe. Your roost area for them doesn’t have to be attached , they will go to roost when released in the evening from the mobile pen. I enjoyed your video very much, I subbed your channel, more and more the stuff that’s within your content is going to be important to know, probably sooner than most everyone thinks, thanks for sharing your knowledge. Edit; I’m that guy that will keep the old hens when their laying drops off, I also feed as a treat for the most part, moving them to fresh ground everyday keeps them fed in the warm weather anyway. I believe they are of value to your younger birds, chickens seem to learn things just watching other chickens, or maybe it’s just it’s dang hard to kill and eat something you cared for since it was a tiny little thing, don’t laugh everyone will find as you age something like that becomes harder and harder to do, or maybe it’s just me, lol.

Also if you give them raw beef fat while they are molting they will also keep right on laying eggs. I hope that you find this information usefull.

  • Message received and well said. Always good to know the next thing we don't want. Interesting side note: My daughter has a flock of 15 ish hens with a rooster. And planning a second flock with a different rooster. We have an issue with hawks vs free range and by accident found an answer. My granddaughters were told to leave any cracked eggs on a tree stump on the way back to the house. Doing this put the chickens in the good graces of a murder of crows. Sitting on the porch having morning coffee and a hawk shows up only to have the trees, we live in woods, explode in a black attack cloud. The hawk is hustled right out of the local air space. An amazing way to start the day. Love your videos.

    • That's amazing! We have a couple of crows (possibly ravens?) that sometimes pop up. Mostly a horde of pigeons though. Would much rather have crows. Unfortunately, also have the rare raccoon and abandoned cats (which have adopted me, so keeping chickens again would require a run rather than free range. Free range would have been nice to keep bugs and weeds down.
