Engineers Test the Most Popular Oil Filters
We tested 4 of the most viewer suggested oil filters to see which one was the best. We simulated hot and cold temperatures, their ability to filter out fine particles, and sent them off to a laboratory to assess their filtering performance. #oil #filter #test
Special thanks to ZeeOSix from the BITOG community for some of the awesome testing ideas

What oil filter do you use on your vehicle? Let us know in the comments down below and we may test it in a future video😉
I think it'd be nice to test some oem filters like the Toyota or Motorcraft. That and the Autozone filters since those are the most common where I'm from
You should test the k&n hp oil filter specifically. They are marketed as a better filter than the last k&n you tested.
AMSOIL
Mann, Bosch, Mahle or Knecht.
The best affordable is my moto. I've used purolator boss for 10 years. I'm amazed at 6 k miles how clean oil is. Nissan rogue
Many people don't realize that Purolator, Wix, and many house brands (ie. Napa, Carquest) are all owned and manufactured by Mann-Hummel. So it makes sense that those 3 were very close to each other in most of the tests. The Purple filter was the only really different one.
Thank you for the info and for watching!
The royal purple ones are made by the same guys that make the Mobil1 filters, top notch stuff!
Wix was it's own company until recently
Is Mann-Hummel the German company that I heard bought Wix fairly recently? Probably is, because before the buy-out, Wix made oil filters for NAPA and several others parts store house brands........plus this new video proves they have the same identical components inside the filters. If this is the case, it's good to see Mann-Hummel is keeping up the quality of Wix filters. By the way: before the buy out, I had an Amsoil rep tell me over the phone that their own Amsoil brand oil filters were also made by Wix. Amsoil had only Wix and their Amsoil branded filters available to purchase on their website, and people are paying a little extra money for the Amsoil branded filter, which is identical to the Wix filter, lol. At least the Amsoil rep was being honest about answering my question.
I recently noticed that the Mobil 1 filter I bought recently looks identical to the Purolator "Boss" that I had on hand from last year. The old Mobil 1 does not look the same. All 3 filters in the size that fits Baby hemi in Jeeps.
Would love to see a Denso filter in here too! They make a lot of OEM filters for many manufactures.
👋 Thanks for watching and the suggestion, we will include several OEMs on a future video and at the end of the series, we will see which filter is the best. Thank you for your support!
@BrandRanks It would be good to mention the actual manufacturer of the oem filters being tested and test the manufacturer's matching filters along with the oem. A lot of people don't know that oem's don't build filters but they do spec them. The manufacturer filter doesn't always match the oem filter exactly.
😂no... I know people that work at denso
it's Denso.... it's solid
@@BrandRanks Thanks, but you better thest the oil filters which are having the steel particles in the thread from the factory thread-cutting , because the factoryes did Not properly clean the threads !!! I have tested the Mann, Mecca, Wix, Filtron, Fram, and some other , But they Alll had the metal particles in the thread, which Are Directly sucked into the engine and into the bearings, thus Damaging the engine !!! ! !!! The Only Two filter factoryes , which did Not have those steel particles in the thread, were old Mahle filters (because some new ones are from China) , and Bosch filters . Now, please, do some more testing, 2 Disclosure this Deception of the Bad factoryes , which most of the mechanics are still Not aware of it. Thank you.
Up in the league with Project Farm with this level of comparison testing with better visuals. (I also recommend testing OEM oil filters, I know that Honda for example such as the A02 and 15400-RTA-003 have felt/cardboard end caps with no wire backing. I just checked the Toyota N1 spin on filter as well and it’s fairly rudimentary in it’s construction, at least in appearance)
Thank you so much Kevin. PF is amazing and very thorough. Glad you enjoyed our video, a lot of work goes into making them. Appreciate your support!
And torque test channel
@@BrandRanksSeriously though, please do oem stuff too.
High praise. Todd would be proud.

From a guy who buys fleet vehicles and only wants the best parts 👍Thank you ✌️😎
Thank you so much for your support!
Just barely watched the first video and thought, “man, I’d like to see the Wix filter tested.” Then bam. This video is 3 hours old. Awesome.
🤣🤣Glad the timing worked out. We've tested many other filters, but we're waiting on lab results. There are a couple of Easter eggs in the video showing others we are testing. 🧐 Thank you so much for your support.
You guys deserve many more subscribers. Your testing rig and methodology is impressive! 👍🏻🖖🏻
Thanks you so much for your kind words! Comments like yours keep us motivated. Thank you for supporting our channel.
Really upped the game this time. Though would still like to see the used oil test again. Real oil with real particulates.
Too goofy
@@heartysteer8752 I really like the standardized particulate. It means they are able to repeat the same test without worrying about differences in used oil.
Why? This entire channel is a rip off of Project Farm. Nothing original
I think getting oil to the engine is key so flow rate is super important, and getting that oil cleaned comes in second for my priority list. Some oil is better than no oil.
Agree, some flow is better than none, that's why most filters have that bypass valve so your engine won't starve. Again, thanks for watching appreciate your comments.
Really great video. I like the amount of effort you guys put in to ensure the testing was as accurate as it could be with the equipment you have. The subtle humor was a great addition too. Keep up the great content. I've been using Wix XP for years.
Thank you so much Jim! Really appreciate you words and support. A lot of effort went into this and it means a lot to hear you enjoyed. WIX XP did pretty well. As long as you keep up with maintenance, all these filters are great.
I work a retirement job in an auto parts store and often recommend "Project Farm" and "Car Care Nut" (for Toyota people like me). Now I have added this channel.
Awesome updates to the rig and procedure. Really appreciate getting to actual filter performance - in particular particle size filtration efficiency. Would love to see Amsoil, Napa Gold (or WIX equivalent), AC Delco Ultragaurd Gold, Purolator One next. Plus would be nice to see a repeat of Fram Ultra Synthetic, Mobil 1 and K&N. I’m sure this testing already takes a lot of effort but repeatability would be interesting (both for skid and between different filters of the same brand). Keep up the great work. You guys will be huge.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Really appreciate you writing this. We are going to be releasing several videos with several filters so make sure you have that notifications turned on so you don't miss them!
Based on your previous oil filter test, I'd like to see where the Mobil 1 would rank among these filters. I've been using either the Mobil 1, Wix XP, or Purolator Boss. Consider doing an oil test too. Great job!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed. Agree, like you saw we changed quite a bit, so for fairness, we will be retesting the mobil 1 and many other filters so we can have a final tally of the best oil filter. make sure to subscribe so you don't miss it. Thank you again, for the support.
Mobile 1 and Bosch.
This is very useful -- I like how much effort is placed into the testing methodology! Please keep testing a wide variety of filters from many manufacturers with this new rig -- like Mann, Hengst, Denso, K&N, Fram, Amsoil, etc. Thanks for all your hard work!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Really appreciate it. It means a lot to hear than the work is appreciated.
I switched to the mobil 1 filter in your last video and would like to see that one tested on the new rig. Thank you for the quality videos. You guys deserve more subscribers!
i think the Mobil 1 and the Purolator One are basically the same filter.
I've always used mobile 1, been getting 500k miles out of my CJ-7 engines
@abraham3981 no they are not even close to the same. Mobil One oil filter is synthetic blend while Purolator Boss is fully synthetic. Mobil One is rated for 30 microns and Purolator is rated for 20 microns. Smaller is better. That being said I personally have been using the Mobil One oil filter for 20 years or more now. It is a great filter, but not the absolute best.
@LeadStarDude I was comparing the Mobil one to the Purator ONE not the Boss.
@@independentthinker8930 258? 👍🏾🇺🇸
It's almost unbelievable how good this video is for the sub count. I've always wondered what makes a "premium" filter more expensive and I'm really impressed that the Purolator was able to filter out the most particles while still being the least restrictive. That's a big win in my book.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes the Purolator was impressive, still tops the chart even after two more videos. Make sure to go check them out.
Great video! Never thought the Purolator would win since I've always found it to be a reasonable cost for my Acuras. I'm surprised you didn't include the Mobil 1 since it won the last competition though. Either way, great job on the video!
Thank you so much for your kind words. As you saw, we made a lot of changes to the testing procedure to ensure it is repeatable. We will be testing the Mobil one and other in future videos and at the end we will see, which one wins!
Outstanding testing improvements and great controls! One of my favorite technical channels.

Hey Michael, yes we will be testing the mobile one fram and KN along with Many others. We will be doing a video series. Next video will be FRAM. Thank you for the support.
And would like to see the used oil test again. Real oil with real particulates. Not lab dust.
@@heartysteer8752 The "lab dust" is a far better test, there is a good reason he stopped using the used motor oil - the ISO standardized dust is controlled and the contaminant size follows a set standard (which you can look up), there is no physically possible way to create a whole bunch of the exact same used motor oil to be compared back and forth - this is because the contaminants in used motor oil are going to vary on driving conditions, oil temperature, settling, additives, engine state, intake air quality, etc. Using ISO standardized dust eliminates those concerns and gives you a far more useful baseline to compare against, you just can't have any control with used motor - this leads to bad data. TL;DR - Relying on used motor oil to monitor contaminants and filtration capacity is like relying on your finger instead of a thermometer to tell what the temperature is outside.
Love the testing guys. I’m subbed. Can’t wait to see what the Orange can does and please put it against the standard Wix. Also the OEMs like Honda/Toyota/Ford
Thank you so much @Nono-rh4lr. Glad you enjoyed and subbed! Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely planning on testing the regular WIX and several OEMs.
Nice job with the increased standardization of your testing methods and materials! This really increases the validity of your tests, and those efforts earned a follow from me 👍. Others must agree, since after a week you've gained another 5k subs, hoping to see more of that rapid growth!

This is exactly how oil filter tests should be. There are hundreds of sites that just cut the filter open and say look it doesn't look good so it must be a bad filter. You guys actually put science behind your tests.

One thing I consider with my filters is the check valve strength. I use an oil accumulator in my system and I need it to not leak back when pre-oiling the engine. My cheap OEM filters performs WAY better than much more expensive ones.
Would love to see the original filters retested on the new rig so we can compare. These videos are exceptionally good!
Thank you so much. We will be resetting some of them.
Impressed by the thoroughness of your method. Good video!
Thank you so much. Your kind words and support is much appreciated!
This testing was definitely more thorough and scientific! Now we will need to compare the results of this video to the filters used in the other video to have a real scoreboard going. Nevertheless this was a great video and I look forward to more in the future!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Appreciate your support immensely. Given we changed several things in the rig and the testing method, we will be testing some of the ones from the first video as well as many other filters in future videos. Again, thanks for your support
Sure, more scientific; however, I'd still like to see the used oil test kept. Real oil with real particulates, not lab dust. Used oil is not going to have the same characteristics as new oil. And the metal particulates are going to have differing shapes and profiles than lab ground and graded dust.
@@heartysteer8752 what you're saying sounds good. But if the filters fail using industry standard dust (that is designed to mimic the charactistics of typical particles) Then I don't see how using "real world" examples would show anything more conclusive than what has already been shown. Due to the fact that actual engine particulates break off at different rates (and shapes as you said), there's no way to duplicate the same test using the same amount of "real world" debris. The laboratory dust allows tests to be more consistent between filters. Otherwise the results could be skewed based on what kind of particulates were used for a particular test. I think these results are more useful than the random results that can be generated by "real world" examples. 😁
@@heartysteer8752 It's funny - some people just don't realize how ridiculously stupid they are - the "lab dust" is literally made to model differing shapes and profiles, that's the entire point of the "lab dust". Also, if your engine has big enough particulates where the shape actually matters then *you have far bigger problems* then your next oil change. cdn.standards.iteh.ai/samples/63386/9a1bcaa0d6df4330b7b4dd7af9cbda75/ISO-12103-1-2016.pdf

Great video guys! Keep em coming!
Thank you so much!!! Appreciate your support.
It is said frequently that engine wear is due to particle sizes less than 20 microns, as they are small enough to fit into engine clearances (this is easily searchable online). These are the hardest particles to filter out. If you could point this out and maybe test for these smaller particles then your videos would be even more helpful in the future. Personally I have been running Fram Ultra filters as they have tested well in independent tests, and their stated efficiency (filtering ability) is the best I can find at 99% at 20 microns. But Fram has recently changed the construction of the Ultra filter and I do not know if it is as good now as it was before. There is a new Fram Endurance that states is for an even longer OCI of 25,000 miles, but I have seen no independent testing of this model. Recently I have been buying Champ XL filters from RockAuto as they are cheap and manage to have the same high efficiency ratings of 99% at 20 microns, they seem like a bargain. If you guys could test these filters, and any others that you find with good efficiency ratings it would be very helpful. Testing filters whose companies state up front that that they are not the best in filtration (with stated lower efficiency ratings) and quality is not helpful when we are trying to figure out who is the best. Thank you for all the work you have done to improve your testing and I eagerly look forward to your videos in the future.
Hey Morris! Thank you so much for the kind words. We left a couple of easter eggs throughout the video of oil filters that we are currently testing and at the end of the video you can see a sneak peek of the Fram endurance. Next video will be an all out test on the FRAM filters so we can compare to these. I personally run the FRAM Ultra and have had no problems so I get where you are coming from. Thank you for all the support. Hopefully these videos do well so we can continue to make more videos.
he didn't tell us where to buy that 10 micron filter
Northern tools... But not meant for engine oil only hydraulic oil, plus the thread on that is enormous.
You can also check out diesel fuel filters like for semi trucks or aftermarket pumps like AirDog and Fass. Donaldson P551315 is 5micron at 98%. Wix 33528 is 2 micron at unknow %.@@BrandRanks

It's a fringe case most likely, but another thing to keep in mind is that not all bypass valves are created equal. I know the Mopar filters for the Viper specifically have a higher pressure bypass to keep clean oil flowing longer.
I have been using wix filters for 8 years now. I used to use fram until I watched a video comparison, your video proves the point of the previous one.

Great effort guys! Much more scientific than previous one. This series is gonna blow up. It already is. When you run out of oil filters to test (yeah right), get into testing diesel fuel filters. Anyways, can you please include a different length version of the same filter? Sometimes you can install a bigger filter than what car manufacturer tells you. I'll give you an example: XG3614 and XG3600

Thank you very much for watching and supporting the channel. We definitely plan on testing some OEMs, unfortunately there are no cross reference Honda's for the filters we are testing and the thread is also different, so if this series does well and we get enough funding we may do another round of metric threaded filters/ racing filters/ by pass filters etc. But first need to grow the channel so we can fund it
