  • A joke summing up the Balkans: One day, a magical fairy (Samodiva) visits a farmer in the Balkans. She flies up to him and declares, "I will grant you any wish that your heart desires. But know that whatever you wish for, I will grant the same to your neighbour but twice as much!" The farmer thought for a moment and then said, "Take out one of my eyes!"

    • That's funny because in 1014 Eastern Roman Emperor Basil II(The Bulgar Slayer) captured 15,000 Bulgarians and fully blinded 99 of every 100 men, leaving each man with one eye to lead the other 99 back to their ruler Tsar Samuel. Upon seeing his blinded army Samuel had a stroke and died two days later. The First Bulgarian Empire would end four years later in 1018.

    • "Decisive Italian Victory in Tripolitania"?? Mustafa Kemal's and Enver Pasha's irregular warfare was able to defeat far superior Italian forces (since mainland Empire was disconnected to the warzone, Mustafa Kemal and Enver Pasha were sent undercover to organize a local force against Italians). War was won on land, however, lost in the negotiating table due to the Italian invasion of Dodecanese islands. After Italians failed in Tripolitania, they used their far superior navy (against almost non-existent Ottoman Navy at the time) to invade the Dodecanese, and to force Ottoman government to let go Tripolitania. Just wanted to point out this minor mistake.

    @zoranilic4024@zoranilic40244 жыл бұрын
    • Zoran Ilić That’s true. Britain always supported Turkey because they had big influence there and are able to control the straits. This way access to Mediterranean is denied to Russia. When Turkey doesn’t own territories around straits they most likely will belong to Bulgaria (closest country). Bulgarians was under influence from Russia - common people and Germany - the Tsar and government. Both cases are not acceptable for Britain. That way 35 years earlier Britain and Germany were cause for Berlin treaty in 1878. With this they denied big and strong Bulgarian state with major influence from Russia (biggest player in the war against Turkey, which liberate Bulgaria). After that Britain continued to support Turkey but Bulgarians turn to Germany (Tsar and promise for united Bulgaria).

  • My first job after graduating from high school 15 years ago was at a clothing department store. I worked part-time to put myself thru college. For one reason or another, there was a very large number of Eastern European immigrants from Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Hungary, and a few from Croatia who I also worked with there. Despite some of their religious and cultural differences, they all got along with each other very well, and most of them were able to converse with and understand each other’s languages more than I expected (some of their languages were even mutually intelligible, in fact). All of them were extremely nice and supportive towards me, especially since I was the youngest and newest one of the department crew, while the rest had been working there for years already. I have a lot of respect and admiration for Balkans people. I hope that despite all of your differences, and painful memories from the past, that you will move in the direction of reconciliation, and realize that you are all more similar than you are different. It’s possible. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Much love and God bless you all ☺️

  • In Bulgaria,the resolve to reunify all lands lost to the Berlin Conference was incredibly strong. In fact,Bulgarian resolve and determination to fight and die for the Motherland and reclaim the territory with a majority of Bulgarian population has been the reason why we were capable of mobilizing up to 1 milion men at the end of World War One. Bulgaria had around 4.5 milion people living in the final days of WW1,meaning that almost up to 25 % of the population was sent to the front and one man fighting with the determination of 10,just so that we could've reclaimed what we believed was rightfully ours in the past centuries.Now,it's all over,we can only contemplate and learn from the mistakes that were made in the pass. In Bulgaria,we have a special day to remember the awful mistake that was made after the betrayal and attack on our former allies. On the 16th of June,1913 the order to attack our neighbours on the former Western front came from non other than our Tsar ( King ).From that moment on,the 16th of June would always be remembered as the Day of Criminal Madness in Bulgaria.

  • Very nice video, thank you! Two minor points: The city of Xanthi is not as shown on the map (it is SW of Adrianople, way further NE than shown), roughly where Xanthi is shown most likely it is Kozani. Also, I understand that a 10-minute video cannot have much detail, but I would like to point out that the successes of the Greek army in Epirus and Macedonia were not due to the laxity of Ottoman defenses but due to a combination of battleworthiness, strategy (by Prince Constantine and his top-notch staff), good timing, and superb Government by none other than Eleftherios Venizelos (e.g. the capture of Thessaloniki was by a direct command by Venizelos - Prince Constantine wanted to go towards Monastir). Case in point is the battle of Bizani, which you mention, and which was against very heavily fortified Ottoman defenses (designed by German generals and engineers). There were also other major battles, like Sarantaporo, etc.

    • @@overlord4404 Ugh no, if hypothetically Bulgaria fought only Greece and Serbia, then Bulgaria would've won. Firstly that was never going to happen, since Romania had already declared it's intentions to enter a future war if Bulgaria had done started something up and secondly, the defeated Ottoman Army was finally mobilised in the european holdings of the empire and was ready to start an attack. But, for the sake of hypotheticals, Bulgaira would've won. Bulgaria broke through Serbia and was winning, same with Greece, the problem is that due to unrully soldiers and broken lines of communications, Bulgaria attacked Serbia with only 2 armies, in contrast to the planned original four. The other two sat and did nothing at the Northwest bulgarian border. But even without those armies, Bulgaria could've still won it, even phyrically, or atleast against Greece, as the greek armies were trapped in the Struma River Valley and were moments away from being surrounded, the saving grace being Romania and Turkey. So no, Bulgaira had it's chances.

What should be done in the 1300-1400 , was at least done in 1821- 1912. Let's honor the greek war of independence (1821-1830) , the Serbian revolutions ( 1804-1817), the russo Bulgarian / Serbian / Romanian - ottoman war of 1878 etc. Let's honor the many greek revolutions in Crete ( 1821, 1841, 1858, 1866,1878,1881,1897) , Epirus , Makedonia etc . The Balkan war was the culmination of all those attempts and liberations against the ottoman Turk occupation. Let's not forget that it was the Ottoman Turks that had invaded our lands and forced the non Muslims to live as second class subjects. We did not have a problem against the average Turk or Moslem. We had a problem against the armed armies who represented ottoman turk tyranny and oppression.
