The Sennheiser HD660S2 is a neutral reference open back headphone. Is it the new referene standard under $1,000? How does it compare to the og HD660s or the HD600?
I purchased the HD660S2 with funds provided by patrons, YT members and my own bank account. A BIG thanks to all my supporters, much appreciated.

  • I got some this year. They totally invalidated my Focal clears and HD800S. Sold them both. The HD800S are overrated. While the HD800S have more "space", the 660s2 have everything else, and better bass. The 660s2 scaled up with better dacs and amps. They have all the strengths of my old HD600, but with much improved bandwidth. They come across as about as natural and neutral as necessary.. Very articulate and detailed and all-day listenable. They also made me notice how some headphones really lack bass in order to sound "cleaner" or more detailed. These are balanced and have accurate bass. Don't let anyone even dream that these have a veil, they absolutely do not. They are my go-to primary headphones.

  • I had purchased a pair of Audeze MM100 last spring and had them paid off but I got tired of all the delays and so I was going to cancel the order until I found an 660S2 as an open box unit for the same $400 price. I now own the 600, 6XX and 660S2 and the S2 is my favorite of the 600 series. By a wide margin. I enjoy the added kick in the pants out of the bass performance as well as the extended upper frequencies. My 62 year old ears really appreciate the added sizzle and clarity up top. My modest system consist of a Burson Conductor 3 Performance Combo on the solid state and a 1st Generation Woo Audio WA-6 on the tubes and these beauties sound just excellent to my ears.

  • It is great to hear that 660S2 has better sound stage, comparing with the previous HD 650/600 headphones. Just out of curiosity, does the HD 660S2 sound stage still have the 3-blob effect like HD 650/600? What I mean by 3-blob effect is most obvious when listening to human singing with background music.The human voice is very forward in your face, forming a very distinctive center image, while the background music sits very back, forming 2 very left/right images. They are so separated that you are listening to 3 separated blobs/sources, instead of a cohesive sphere. It is quite a unique character on only HD 650/600 that I never found on any other reference headphones.

    @frankf6716@frankf67162 ай бұрын

  • Greetings from Australia - I have the FiiO M17 DAP/DAC and own the Focal Bathys / Focal Celestee and yesterday ordered the Sennheiser HD650S2 which was reduced from AU$949 to AU$749 as this will be my first pair of open backs for many years and the first from Sennheiser and will receive these today. Alternatively could have purchased the Focal Clear MG or Focal Clear Pro for both but still priced around $AU2,100. It appears Sennheiser dropped the case for a bag probably to save money but I would take these with me so the bag is more suitable.

    • @@TheHonestAudiophile Received the Sennheiser HD660S2 however was shocked at the minimalist packaging for this price range - the box is devoid of any specifications or product information, the bag included (no case) is el-cheapo and has no branding (seems like an afterthought) and none of the usual Sennheiser authenticity verification stickers and the only logo is “Hi-Res Audio” which means nothing without the expensive and required external hardware to power these and their impedance is also not listed. The audio cables seem very soft and too flexible (previous version were thick and coiled), however they appear to be gold plated. The headphones themselves are well made however too much plastic and cheap foam on top which over time will degrade. The earpads unlike the Focal are not leather and dust magnets. Focal on the other hand are higher quality build wise and almost all of it is leather / magnesium / aluminium plus a quality carrying case is included and the Focal are only rated at 40 ohm, not 200 ohm. As for audio used my Fiio M17 DAC / DAP and tried both the 4.5mm and 6.5mm headphone jacks and bear in mind this M17 cost me AU$2,200 but it appears more amplification is required when using the 6.5mm jack instead of 4.5mm, but in theory there should be no difference. I still have to increase the volume to 80 to make it sufficient and I do believe being open backs higher volumes are required in an attempt to block out surrounding noise in non-quiet environments. Maybe its me and I use Tidal (including downloaded hi-res albums on the FiiO M17 locally) for most of my music but very hard to find ultra high quality 88khz or higher music on these services, so currently unable to test these to their full potential as most audio on these services are CD quality aka 44khz only. Obviously this not Sennheiser’s fault.

    • @@TheHonestAudiophile Im also baffled if if its worth having high impedance headphones that require more power to drive if in the end the lower impedance sound as good if not better - where’s the benefit? I am also not sure if any difference with audio if using the smaller 4mm or larger 6.5mm connector for the headphones - I do believe it’s simply a connection choice with no audio difference. I am glad I purchased the FiiO M17 despite its AU$2,200 price tag as it can power virtually all headphones and has most connector types (excluding XLR as this would make it even larger and heavier - NOTE: New Fiio M27 coming out later in the year to top this one), even 200ohm or higher, but volume levels need to be increased if not in a quiet environment. So beyond the higher impedance I don’t believe the audio sounds any better than lower impedance headphones. If anyone can suggest any test tracks to see how well these perform, then I will give this a spin with the Sennheiser HD660S2, but it appears Focal have the better build quality, larger drivers but that yet are closed back. Tempted to purchase a pair of Focal Clear MG / Focal Clear MG Pro’s (sequels to the original Focal Clear which is currently reduced to AU$1,499 as no longer being made) open backs while reduced to around AU$2,000 so I can compare with Sennheiser HD650S2 and I suspect they will blow Sennheiser out of the water due to their superior build, larger drivers etc, and only rated 55 ohm impedance as well so easy to drive.

      @SpeedfrkOne@SpeedfrkOne29 күн бұрын
    • @SpeedfrkOne this is a listening test I put together. I know it's more about listening loud but it should show differences in impedance loads as well. www.thehonestaudiophile.com/post/how-loud-is-too-loud-does-it-sound-better-an-honest-audiophile-listening-level-challenge As for the differences between single ended and balanced the output power will help to enhance the experience of headphones and IEM that need the additional current, the differences will mostly be noticed in deeper bass, more controlled treble and more refined, focused resolution.

  • 6X0 line is a hard one. Many people are stuck on their favorite, so you almost have to be bold to come out and say “this is better,” because people take it personally! On another note, is the FT3 on your radar for review? I have one and I think it’s definitely deserving of greater exposure, polarizing visual design aside. I think it challenges the 6X0 line. It’s maybe not quite as close to reference, but I think the sound signature would appeal to many, with pretty good technical capabilities as well. FT3 is a really well-rounded headphone to my ears.

  • I disagree, with the punch and slam part, these headphones feel very compressed also not the best extension. Even the 650 comes close if not beats it in extension and punch. I think the overall presentation of the mids and treble is grainy and lacking neutrality, very much a departure from the natural timbre the 6x0 series has come known for (580, 600, 650). The upper mids feel congested and recessed leading to rather hollow sounding vocals. There's also a peaking notch in the middle treble done in a strange way which adds some uneasiness to the presentation. It's basically what I think of the 660s just warmer. The most offensive thing is the price tag. If it was more in line with the 6x0 series pricing then it might be a good option for people if they want this sound. But this performance for $600 is unacceptable. But anyhow you're entitled to your opinion and this is mine. Personally I dont think I'd pay even 30 bucks for them. Maybe I would for the pads and grille though

    • Totally disagree in every possible way. 650’s inferior across the board.

    • I've listened to 600, 650 and 660s2 for a long time, changing from one to another and although 650 are close timbre vise, they clearly are not as fast and detailed, separation is lacking considerably and they do sound muddy and more veiled, than the 660s2. 600 is not even close in all regards, not a fair comparison tbh.

    • Got it backwards there! If you're hearing impaired, you won't hear the audible attributes of more revealing headphones that you would if you had better or normal hearing. This is obviously all dependent on what amp and dac they are powered with as someone may be driving them off a cheap AVR jack and the other commenter is using a high quality headphone amplifier and a R2R DAC...lol. Kinda like the guy who said the Hifiman Sundaras suck and he was using his laptop jack with no external DAC or Amp 😂 They have the same headphones but are not even close when the source equipment is disclosed. I switch between an RME ADI-2 Dac with a Monolith THX amp for xlr balanced (head-fi stack) or my Gustard R26 R2R Dac and a Schiit headphone amp (main system Dac). Just these 2 options sound much different on each headphone/source combination. Great headphone systems are not as inexpensive, but great IEM'S can be powered with less, and many excellent ones are quite inexpensive ❤

    • Seriously though, I do believe the 660s2 is a reference headphone that has excellent capabilities. As I stated in the video it is the most neutral and natural headphone of the 6xx line. Do I think there are better options available? Probably so but I've not heard everything so there is that to consider. I do think very highly of the 660s2. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.

    • Totally disagree. The budget options of Sennheiser are mostly predictable. The 660s2 is a different beast. Yes the plastic is not premium like other brands.
