immy White was involved in an awkward spat with referee Ben Williams during his match with Luca Brecel. The incident came after the referee incorrectly nominated the blue ball as White sized up the brown. Most people missing the fact that this all started by Jimmy aggressively turning towards the ref and calling him a dimlo (thicko, idiot). THAT is what the ref laughed off, really giving Jimmy the benefit of the doubt that it was a joke. If the ref had “acted professionally” as some seem to think he should, he could have given him a warning immediately, but it’s a gentleman’s sport and instead he rightly gave Jimmy another chance. When Jimmy doubled down with an aggressive, repeated “what’s funny about that”, he guaranteed himself the warning the ref had given him a chance to avoid, but most importantly is now forever immortalised on KZhead as a sad, old, bitter man.
Wrong. The ref was an idiot in the first place. It's obvious for anyone who understands snooker that Jimmy was never playing the blue in that spot.

The referee should never assume something because “it’s obvious they meant that isn’t it?”. Their decisions must be clear, objective and based on indisputable fact.

Don't change Ben. Definitely one of the best referees in the game. Jimmy, I hope you were having a bad day, because I would hate to think you are like that every day. You owe Ben an apology and maybe you need to work on your personality. It's amazing some players have no respect for the referees, Ronnie is the same. If it wasn't for them, you would not have a game to play. Just remember that. It's not cool to act like a prick.
Jimmy should apologise for being a bit arsey, Ben should apologise for making the mistake and unprofessionally laughing about it. It's good that Ben has a sense of humour, but there's a time and a place. White was on the end of another drubbing and has been a bit of a laughing stock on the tour for a while, it's understandable that he's not in the mood to see the referee laughing.

The Referee’s threat was to cover his embarrassment for his unprofessional outburst. You would never see the likes of Jan Verhaas act so poorly. Clearly Jimmy didn’t stick a finger up at him, he was just annoyed. It’s all very well claiming that these players couldn’t play the game without the referees but surely as a professional referee show some decorum and pride in doing your job to the best of your ability. Surely the job of a referee is to do exactly that referee the game and allow the players to play the game to the best of their abilities?!

People seem to focus on the fact that Jimmy may or may not have raised his finger, and not the fact he insulted the referee with "dimlo" after they made an honest mistake. This was an oddly hostile reaction, and to ease tension, the referee laughed it off, giving Jimmy an out, but then Jimmy doubled down with his hostility and asked what was so funny about it. To me, the finger is barely relevant, but did allow the referee to save face by taking disciplinary action due to Jimmy's offensive behaviour. Did he stick his finger up? Probably - it's consistent with the general attitude displayed, and many an insolent schoolboy has presented a similar gesture to a scolding teacher to give them plausible deniability. Poor show, but that's Jimmy's true character so who's surprised.

There was no need for that, I felt sorry for the ref and it's Jimmy who ended up wtih egg on his face. That ref is one of the most down to earth refs on the circuit a lovely gentleman. Jimmy needs to apologise to him if you ask me.

I think Jimmy lives with the tension that he’ll never be known for the player he could have been if he’d laid off the drugs and stayed focussed. A bit of his magic came back and the next second he’s acting like he owns the place and has a hissy fit over nothing. As if he hasn’t made incredible mistakes like most of us. Still my favourite player of all time.

Jimmy raises his hand in a gesture of frustration. Referee then falsely accuses him of giving him the finger and warns him. Jimmy does not escalate or react. And nearly all of YT sides with the ref. I wonder if he used to be a cunstable?

The ref shouldn’t be laughing unless the player is too - read the room. Unprofessional reffing there although I do like to see this ref normally he misjudged it there. jimmy was right - there was nothing funny about miscalling the colour, it’s not amusing, just a mistake that needs correcting and a small apology to the player
Ref made the wrong decision and stupidly laughed then got too involved when Jimmy was trying to be serious. Jimmy didn't give him the finger as such. The ref should have kept quiet due to his silly mistake earlier, but had to get involved again upsetting Jimmy's rytham.

This is elite level sport with a lot of money on the line, and the ref is a) making a big mistake and then b) laughing at it like he’s reffing a pub game. Yes Jimmy looks serious compared to the ref… but this is a serious game. It makes no sense that the default should be to be all laughing and joking and not taking it serious. You would never see that in another professional sport

I think the comments Ronnie and Alan made were fair, Jimmy got annoyed with the referee in the heat of battle, which is understandable as he was with his back against the wall not playing well, there was no need for the ref to nominate a colour here. Of course Jimmy shouldn't get that frustrated but it happens to the best, all those people pretending they wouldn't get annoyed sometimes are just liars.
Good point. I don't even think Jimmy nominated anything before the ref called 'blue'. Why the need to nominate here? I can't remember the last time I saw a player go for the blue from the D while reds are still on the table. I remember Hendry potted a blue off its spot with the white on the baulk cushion in the Grand Prix - 1987 final against Dennis! Ref had a mare here, then got precious.

There's a time and a place... When your 3 nil down and it looking like curtains is neither the time or place for banter. Jimmy wasn't playing well, he was under the cosh and the ref should have seen that. He did overreact and I get that but to finish it off by the ref acussing him of giving him the birdie is ridiculous.... The refs pissed and went on a power trip, when all he had to do was say to him sorry Jimmy I misheard you, correct himself and carry on. The referee's a good guy, and well-liked among the top pros. Jimmy's reaction is too aggressive, but the ref should not be laughing at his own mistake at this point in the match, given Jimmy is 3-0 down.
He was laughing at Jimmy's comment, not the nominated colour. If Jimmy had said it audibly in the first place (most players mumble), the referee would have repeated the correct colour first time around.
@@TheRip72 he’s laughing loudly at an important point in the match as Jimmy is preparing to cue. This is the same sport where the ref tells crowds to quieten down if they cough. Jimmy looks very serious and intense compared to the ref here, but that’s only because the ref is having a laugh and being so jovial and casual- can you imagine after a referee in a football game made a mistake, would he be laughing? Definitely not. This isn’t a pub game
@@toziassmitt I think you have missed an important point. Making sure you know what colour the player has nominated is not a mistake by the referee. As a referee, it is your job to be sure you know what their nominated colour is, so you repeat it to confirm. Players often mumble when they declare their nominated colour so it is sometimes hard to understand them. I don't think Ben heard Jimmy so he was not sure which colour he was going for. I could not hear him at first either. When I passed as a referee, I was told that if in doubt, try to repeat the wrong colour to make the player correct you. I suspect Ben Williams was taught exactly the same. Jimmy's response to this made the referee laugh, not the nomination itself. If he had just got on with it after hearing the ref repeat the nomination the second time around, there would have been no laughter at all.

It’s not a difficult thing to stay professional and not burst out laughing. I can’t think of any other sport where that would be appropriate at all. If you slow down the footage Jimmy did NOT use the middle finger. He just waved his hand up. Yes his reaction to the laugh OTT but not obscene gesture was used.

The whole point of nominating a colour and the referee then repeating it is to avoid mistakes. The system worked perfectly here. The ref just made light of it but there was no real need for Jimmy to react like that.

I'm sorry, what are you trying to imply here. You can't bring up a totally different match and error and say Jimmy may have a point in THIS circumstance. What you've just done makes zero sense, the two situation aren't even related. Tricky one but I think the ref does not help himself by giggling after he calls the wrong ball, it's not very professional. Jim is obviously under the cosh here, the last thing he needs it's the ref not doing his job properly then giggling.
He was giggling at Jimmy's remark. He responded blue because he did not hear Jimmy call brown first time around. As referees we always repeat the verbal nomination & if we can't hear it properly, I was taught to repeat one I believed was wrong in order to get them to repeat it.
@@TheRip72 Fair enough but it does not explain why the ref started laughing, that's what Jimmy really took umbrage with, I've seen this ref before, and he seems to have a nervous laugh. Which in this circumstance didn't help him.
The ref is a complete helmet, and look at his aggressive nature once the situation changed and he could blame Jimmy. The guy is 3-0 down in a best of 7 , he shouldn’t be laughing, and why’s he nominating a ball for him anyway ??
White was the most entertaining player back in the day ... I think he should consider packing it in now. He should have packed it in years ago actually.
The most entertaining was Alex Higgins. Even Steve Davies said he was the one that entertained him the best. White was a good player but not great. If you’re great you get to be world champion. I agree with you entirely on the rest you had to say about White. You said it well 👍👌
Ref was supposed to say sorry that's the brown ball that's the professional way, instead he reacted like a police officer who retaliated after being embarrassed in public

Jimmy has turned into a bitter old man! Like a man’s who getting grouchy because he hasn’t had his fix of alcohol yet. That on top of getting beat by lesser known players. His money is also probably drying up and obviously earning very little by not winning tournaments. It’s all taking a toll unfortunately.

A referee should not laugh at making a mistake like that. Jimmy was correct in making this known to the referee; but he was a touch aggressive in making the point twice and his hand gesture was dismissive...he was rightfully warned. IMHO.. I'm sure they'll have a friendly apologetic chat about it..
Your comments about the mistake is something I've commented on. I think the ref went too far with the warning about the gesture, though. It was only his index finger, after all.

Jimmy White, great player in his time sure, but overall he just acts entitled to the game. Points fingers, gets angry, throws rest on the floor etc. And also, his commentary is not that good either. Much rather Alan McManus. Jimmy just belches the general stuff "Started off well and kept it up" "Started off poorly but managed to turn it around". The only time he gives more insight is to shower his friend Ronnie O'Sullivan with praise.
Jimmy has become old and grumpy 🤣... but year's ago he wouldn't of been like that because he wasn't serious enough then...hence him underachieving.. however still an absolute legend and a joy to watch always.

Put it into context, you’re getting battered 3-0 with no real hope of winning the next 4 frames, the ref makes a mistake then laughs about it quite unnecessarily, if you are struggling and someone is making light of a situation then you would obviously be irritated by it like Jimmy was.
Absolutely agree. Ref misjudged it big time. It wasn't the right situation for a giggle after the mistake. I'm not even sure why a colour needed to be nominated.

The commentators first reaction was to laugh as well same as the ref, Jimmy 3-0 down of course he's going to be abit uptight especially after pulling off a tremendous red. To make it worse he missed the brown as well, probably things going on in his head, not maximum concentration.

Well ive got a mate who referee's exhibition matches and jimmy white was being an arsehole with him at one of his exhibitions a few years ago so this doesn't suprise me.

It seemed there could have been previous between them. Jimmy losing 3-0 and needing to win 4 in a row against soon to be world champion Luca Brecel, he is not Impressed at the ref laughing when he points out his mistake when he called blue ball when he had nominated the brown. The ref gave him a warning for sticking his finger up at him. He never at all, he just gestured with his hand that he was carrying on, he just lifted his hand and it was his index finger sticking out and not the middle one which would have been disrespectful if done on purpose but it clearly wasn’t. I think the referee just got embarrassed when Jimmy was annoyed with him laughing and wanted to shut him up and in threatening to dock him the frame (and match) if he carried on, Jimmy had to leave it. Carried on and missed the brown which would’ve been infuriating and when your flow is interrupted in snooker, you often seem to play a bad shot. It must drive Jimmy crazy as he was and arguably could still be the best player never to win the World Championship, losing 6 Finals (once was 14-8 up and then lost 10 frames in a row to lose 18-4! 😡 Once missing a very potable black and losing 18-17) 😡 To play great in practice, like as well as he’s ever played and then rarely take that form to the match tables nowadays must totally rile him and refs laughing when he’s 3-0 down with a possible 4 to play in a best of 7 must be so frustrating! Did well to keep his cool when he rattled the brown! You’re a legend Jimmy, keep at it. Win or lose you’ll always sell out venues. We love to see you win though and know you still can.
