DIY Timber Trailer w. Hydraulic Crane Hauling Firewood

2024 ж. 18 Сәу.

The remaining firewood cut down in February and March is hauled in with my homemade Peugeot powered UTV and 4x4 timber trailer (the hydraulic crane is bought). Firewood is sorted in two separate piles - one for bucking and splitting, the other one for guillotine firewood processor again. The last time I didn't bother wasting time on sorting the firewood with hydraulic crane grapple and paid the price and did it manually later. This time I thought I'd let the machine do the work instead. This telescoping version of the Forstman FM crane series is great (some versions don't have the telescopic option). It greatly improves the work radius. Also the hydraulic radio winch - once you get used to it you never want to go without it again.

  • I just watched a 25 minute video of a grown man playing 'Pick Up Sicks'. And I liked it. I was thinking about that while watching the video, and realized the man playing pick up sticks is using a trailer that he built, and pulled by a utility vehicle he also built. And I know he built them because I watched all the build videos. That is a LOT of wood hauled to the house. And it makes me miss helping cut and stack firewood. And we didn't have nearly as cool toys to help us. Donn, you have some of the coolest useful toys. And what's more, you BUILT them yourself.

  • I have begun to winch the "not ridicilously large" trees to the trailer, then de-limbing and bucking there while the crane is holding the trunk in working height. Easier to work, but lets me use the crane to stack all the limbs and twigs in a big pile on the other side of the trailer as I work. Added 60cm long extenders to the log holders on the trailer to be able to load it with a lot more when driving away limbs and twigs afterwards. Really cool to see you "use your stuff" ;-)

Will you incorporate the guillotine log cutter into a full log processing trailer like your old one with the chain saw to cut the logs to length so you don't have to bend down and do it with a chain saw? The UTV still is so cool. Would a diesel engine work better or is the gas engine doing well? What will you do with the old Pug van donor bodies? Good work on all the projects! 👍

  • Nice to see the timber trailer & crane I use. Did you ever connect the PTO to the trailer to use the All Wheel Drive? I’ve never seen you have it connected.

    @tonyurquhart8278@tonyurquhart8278Ай бұрын
    • I did connect it and try it out after finishing the trailer build. The drawbar needs some mods and it needs a proper PTO shaft before I can fully utilize the 8x8 drive. However - the UTV itself is capable of pulling the fully loaded trailer even without the drive connected. So I've done just that so far and haven't bothered connecting the drive yet since there are more important things to deal with first (as always 😀).

    @nicolek4076@nicolek4076Ай бұрын
    • I did a testrun on it but the trailer drawbar needs modifying and a special PTO shaft needs to be built first to fully implement the trailer drive 👍

  • Have you tested the drive system on the trailer yet?

    @Joe-mf4jx@Joe-mf4jxАй бұрын
    • Yes, I already did it right after finishing the trailer build. It works in straight line but starts to push the UTV when cornering. Thus - a drawbar mod is needed so the UTV and trailer end up on the same turning circle and a custom PTO shaft is also needed. The UTV hasn't had a problem pulling the trailer "as-is" in most conitions so I haven't bothered to finish the drive yet. But I will eventually.👍
