That is great! Congratulations. I used to fish sturgeon frequently down there in the 80s. Only caught 2 keepers. One was 44lbs right in the middle of the moth ball fleet. Second one was 32lbs caught at the tip of tiburon. Last time I fished the fleet area in the late 80s early 90s we caught a ton of 12-14" fish. They had just begun the planting program. Those fish are the oversized ones now. Eta; the spinal cord is bitter. We always removed it.

I grew up fishing for sturgeon on the columbia river, mostly from the bank but out of the boat once I was an adult. They truly are an amazing fish, I've been lucky to have seen some monsters. It's awesome to see that there is healthy population in that area. They dont open it often up here due to low numbers from predation and over fishing.
I was wondering that too, sturgeon is widely known as an endangered specie. At least not really sustainable.

Its crazy how different the features are on the sturgeon in the bay and the Columbia River in Oregon. Same species but the ones in the bay have blunter nose and are usually thicker. Either way they are one of my favorite fish to eat if prepared right. Greetings from Portland Oregon, raised in Richmond California. I miss fishing in the bay allot......

Nice job with your personal best biggest fish taku! I know exactly how you feel catching that fish. I live in Wisconsin and we dont have white sturgeons, but we have lake sturgeons, which dont grow as big as whites but can still get pretty big! My best and biggest was 63 inches!! Seeing your fish reminded me of mine and the video just doesnt give respect to really how big your fish was. Great job brother and hopefully next time you get one even bigger, a goliath, break the 80 inch mark!!
about 82 or 83 a buddy and I went out in the bay in a 10ft aluminum jonboat from BlackPoint, we're out in mebbe 3ft of water and alla sudden the boat starts bouncing around, and the water is like glass, It was a MONSTER sturgeon gliding along under the boat, kinda scary...

that fish was a monster! i watched this with my kids to prove our skunks there recently will be worth it one day.
Back in mid 90s we alway fish for them at Benicia Bay. I think the slot was 48” to 70” not sure I no longer live in that part of area. I miss fishing for them though!
