  • Weston is such a lucky kid. I wish someone taught me how to id mushrooms when I was young. I like the part where your other buddy is checking out the trumpets and he offers his knife for him to use.

    • Nothing is stopping you now. It’s great to be able learn how to safely forage food as a kid, but as an adult, you’ll be able to pick up the skill faster.

    • @@mrdude88 I have 4 field guides for mushrooms in my area. I'm just saying I wish I learned when I was younger. My dad is more of a hunter, I killed and gutted my first deer when I was 13. I learned how to fish from him too. Fishing is my addiction. But knowing what mushrooms I can harvest while hunting is something I've having to learn now. Last fall while elk hunting I pushed some blue grouse, so we had foraged mushrooms and blue grouse with rice for a dinner. Sadly no elk.

    • @@heruhcanedean What's also cool is there's surely other wild ingredients your walking past that would be great additions to your dinner, life always has more to teach us.

    • @@ziggybender9125 I know a nice amount of wild greens that are safe in my area. I also have a herb garden so I don't have to worry about it too much. Something about mushrooms being able to kill you makes me a little timid about eating the ones I haven't 100% identified.

My suggestion to you is to think outside of the box and try gold prospecting here in California or visit “Crater of Diamonds State Park” in Arkansas. With the lovely Jocelyn’s luck she will make both of you rich!

  • Nice haul of 'shrooms Taku. The puffball species to eat is the giant puffball. You have to get them while they are small (less than 16 inch diameter) and young while the inside is white. The beetles love to bore through them as they get older and the inside turns yellow. When they're ready to release spores we refer to them as "wolf farts". As far as preparation, they're usually sliced, battered and fried (or baked). Puffball parmigiana is delicious, but I have friends that make puffball melts (with ham and swiss) and puffball french toast. You could even do a puffball katsu. Not necessarily fine dining but very tasty nonetheless. My favorite will always be hen of the woods (maitake). Such a versatile mushroom with that quintessential forest floor smell.
