  • I was happy with the usb c change. Today was the day I was able to load a file on my thumb drive directly from my iPhone without any 3rd party apps or dongles. These regulations are great to force apple from being too greedy. I don’t think they’ve been innovative at all recently, just making small improvements here and there while still charging a lot of money. If these regulations forces apple to innovate then I’m all for it.

    @geekatari4391@geekatari43914 ай бұрын
    • Not possible. The iphones and other smartphones are fairly priced. For example, the cost of production of an iphone 15 is roughly $600 (including marketing and research costs). So apple barely has a 25% profit margin on the phone. Also, remember, a lot of people involved in manufacturing the parts are underpaid. So if they were to pay them well, then iphone 15 would cost well over $800 just to produce (then they would have to raise the retail price) A smartphone is SUPPOSED to cost around 1-2K. iphones right now are very cheap (if you live in a first world country). You have to look at it this way: A $300 per year investment to make your life more comfortable, easier, better etc (considering you switch phones every 3 years)

  • So first the Apple watch ban is an entirely different situation from the EU regulations. Apple could have avoided this whole situation if they'd just acknowledged their wrong doing and agreed to pay royalties for the cribbed O2 sensor tech. As for the EU regulations while those regulations are costing Apple money it's insignificant compared to the money they would lose if they pulled out of the EU market. That's a 500 million potential customer base and even if they only take 10% of the market they only need to sell one subscription service to more than recoup the lose of royalties on the lightning cable. Sideloading is a different issue but one that I doubt is going to cost them as much money as people think. 🤷

  • Actually I will say this, the usb-c thing should not have been forced on Apple by the government. The only people that should force such decisions should be the consumers. Second, I don’t think side-loading should also be forced. Apple is a private company. They don’t hold a monopoly over telecommunications. If they wanna keep their environment in a closed loop, so be it. It’s not the governments place to mandate that they share their software with other companies. Third, I can totally understand the glucose monitoring lawsuit. They shouldn’t have stolen the technology or obtained in an unethical way. So that serves them right to have to stop selling the watch until they can pay for it legally or pull the technology out. I’m not just defending Apple, I’m defending the premise of keeping government decisions out of private companies.

  • I don't like the idea of a company being forced by a government to comply with certain build specifications. The more governement tends to get involved the worse things seem to become. The bottom line is if the consumers didn't like the products Apple made they wouldn't buy them and the fact that Apple is still successful as a company shows the things they are being harrased for are really not that big of a deal. The USB-C port probably would've happened anyway without goverment intervention since people, in general, found the previous ports to be inconvenient. The smart watch is a silly piece of tech to me in the first place, but they could still sell Apple watches even if they didn't have quite the same health monitoring capabilities. It really should be left to the consumner to express their desires to a company and allow the company to tailor a product to the demand; not governments.

Every year I buy the best new iPhone and the best new Android/Foldable. Keep 'em for a few months until I get sick of one. Android has lost every year, but not for the reason many would think. It's the smartwatch situation. My original smartwatch was The Pebble. It was simple, but great. When they shut down, it was Apple. I've tried many watches, but no other ones are that close. • I feel like the USB-C thing was the first step to the breakdown… They didn’t seem to fight it much but iPads were there already so I feel like it really wasn’t that far off. Regardless I think government mandates were not necessary. And if it was it should apply to everything, not just Apple. As for the replaceable battery I don’t see it. Most of the popular Android phones don’t really have that either. They should be able to build what they and ultimately the customers want. If the customers don’t they won’t buy it…

    @justplanefred@justplanefred4 ай бұрын
    • I agree I don't want governments (reality corporations and their lobby groups) to tell people and companies where to eat sleep and s***. Although USB C was high time, All these crazed Android fans fapping about forcing iPhones to have USB C, don't seem to understand they are sacrificing their God given right to Choose ! But I think the replaceable battery isn't really about a pull the back of the phone off and slot in another battery, but really about right to repair, and I think that comes under the definition of sale and ownership, which is a c0mm on Law matter and requires no new legislation just the correct application of c0mm on Law, and the setting of precedence.

    • Apple doesn't make nearly as much money off of USB-C as they did off of lightning cables. Apple got a cut of the profits from every lightning cable sold, regardless if it was made by Apple or not because Apple owned the patents. They make 0 if you choose to purchase non-Apple branded USB-C cables.

    • I have to agree about the removable battery. Having non removable batteries increase the durability of a phone by reducing the amount of dust and moisture that can get in. Once the back of the phone is removable again, those IPX ratings will be downgraded or removed. I rather have a non removable with the IPX ratings.

      @recondax@recondax4 ай бұрын
    • No, I do want removeable batteries. Batteries don't last forever plus it's nice to swap with a spare one if you ever need it. Also I secretly am loving see Apple go down. Finally someone has the guts to do it.

  • Stop making stuff? dont be ridiculous. the M2 and upcoming M3 SoC are some of the fastest and most efficient in the world and even if they stopped making computers/phones etc, they would definitely find people that wanted to license that hardware. Yes, its produced by TSMC for them, but that just makes it easier and less costly for them to pivot if required.

  • Any deviation from the Apple standard (design and possibilities) is seen as ridiculous to talk about. No Apple iPhone will ever have more than 3 cameras beside the front facing tech. Being able to repair a display or upgrade an old battery without Apple care services might be another actual thing to ban the phone. You get nasty messages and the phone is basically useless. What better reason to act on this.

  • Maybe I am confused. Didn’t Apple halt the production of the series 9, due to knowing that was what was coming up until things are resolved regarding whether or not they stole the patent for the blood oxygen feature (and a separate case for the ECG feature)? They engaged in discussions with the company who created the technology when the company said they would be interested in a partnership. Then Apple lured that company’s top 4 inventors over to work for Apple, had them do some tiny tweak, and tried to claim that the technology was NEW and not stolen.

  • Competition should drive innovation. Stealing intellectual property and uneccessary regulations choke innovation. The Chinese have been notorious for reverse engineering (which is stealing intellectual property) and have turned it into a multi-billion dollar global enterprise and still to this day violate intellectual property laws across the planet. Tariff's and fines against the Chinese is the answer. If Apple is stealing intellectual property (which apparently they are) they too should pay with tariff's and fines. This has really gotten way out of control for decades now. Microsoft was a player in this as well securing mega billion dollar US contracts.

  • To be honest, not the biggest Apple fan, and i do think some of these mandates are necessary for all phone manufacturers but I'm not a fan of the fact that the governments are stepping in to limit certain things on companies. Like i get it, Apple has some shady-ass marketing tactics and i believe that they should definitely make these changes for the consumer's sake. But i kinda wish it was us, the consumers, saying something and putting money where our mouth is that made Apple change its ways as opposed to the government. But ig someone had to do it since Apple was never gonna do it on their own and consumers are too stupid and sheep to stop buying apple products and shame androids

  • Apple is a publicly traded company. They are legally obliged do maximise the profits for their stock holders unless there are some major moral reasons against it. If they decide to leave the EU and Japan because of their app store laws, every owner of Apple shares could sue them, because the share price would certainly plunge by 20% or more. It also is very unlikely that the EU and Japan will stay alone with that regulation. The UK will certainly follow, Canada might follow, Australia might follow and of course Korea, which is the home of Apple's biggest rival in the smartphone industry. Taiwan might follow as a repercussion for Apple slowly leaving the country. The next big change will be the removable battery. As all those other laws, that is not a law targeted at Apple. All companies will have to comply with it in 2027 or 2028. Apple sues anybody who violates their patents. So they can't complain if others sue Apple if Apple violates their patents. Especially if it is not a "patent troll" who just registered a patent to sue people.

  • Finally. I love to see them getting kicked in their butt. Apple ruined everything. No micro-SD card slot, No 3.5mm headphone jack, ugly designed Smartphones with notches and islands. The problem is not, that their phones suck. We all know that already. The problem is, that other great companies also copied these failures and now, we rarely see great smartphones anymore. Most of the new smartphones suck, because of these issues (card slot, 3.5mm, notch-less design). The current best phone out there with a nice design is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. It has everything. Its perfect. But phones released nowadays? They also are just as bad as those iPhones. So I really hope that they are getting punished for those things they gave direction for, which sadly many recent phone manufacturers copied. I just want an up-to-date smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 but with 240W fast charging, micro-SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack and without a notch or island or any bullshit Apple could invent in the future. And I also hope, that other companies won't slap a 200€ on top of the price and call it "Titanium". Seriously. Which idiot had the idea to use that kind of metal, just because its stronger. It's not like our lives depend on phones so they have to be everlasting. What do I use my phone for? Alarm clock, music player, video player, navigation system, shopping, Notion, occasionally shooting photos, calling, texting, occasionally playing games. Do I use Social Media? No.
