Ibn 'Arabi/Balyani - "Know Yourself" - Selected Excerpts for Meditation - Sufi Mystics

These excerpts from the book - "Know Yourself: An Explanation of the Oneness of Being" (translated by Cecilia Twinch) have been formatted for guided meditation purposes. Please note, the languaging for the description of the Absolute Reality has been rendered gender neutral.
This is a translation of the first complete work attributed to Ibn ‘Arabi to appear in a western language. The earlier translation was instrumental in making Ibn ‘Arabi’s name known in the West over the last century, even though the author of the book is now considered by many scholars to be Balyani, a near contemporary, who may well have been influenced by his thought.
The book can be purchased here: www.amazon.com.au/Know-Yourse...
Muhyiddin Ibn 'Arabi (1165-1240AD) was a Sufi mystic, poet, and philosopher born in Murcia, Spain on the 17th of Ramaḍān. He was one of the great mystics of all time. Through the richness of his personal experience and the constructive power of his intellect, he made a unique contribution to Shi'ite Sufism. He was considered a Saint.
After his death, Ibn Arabi's teachings quickly spread throughout the Islamic world. His writings were not limited to the Muslim elites, but made their way into other ranks of society through the widespread reach of the Sufi orders. Arabi's work also popularly spread through works in Persian, Turkish, and Urdu.

  • At first glance I don't recognize his style or ideas in the text, Ibn Arabi strips you from the idea of being altogether, to become only words mirroring the words or attributes of God, so you have the feeling of floating like a cloud, and free from any self, in this text I sense like a vedantic influence, a lot of focus is on the self, I would attribute it to Balyani but who knows. Other than that it is a very powerful text, best introduction to nonduallity ever.

It's attributed to Al~shaykh al~akbar Muhyi-al-din`Arabi and entitled The Book of Answers (Kiran al~Ajwiba) also called The book of Alif (Kitab al-Alif). 2 other manuscripts British Museum both attributed to Balyani, who is described in one as 'The Poke of Poles (with al~aqtab)'Shaykh`Abdallah al-Balyani and in the other he's called Auhad al Din` Abd-allah al-Balyani. The second of these is entitled On the oneness of being and the Knower of God (fi wahdat al-wujud sa fi-l-`arif) From Damascus,2 principal copies of manuscripts used by Michel Chodkiewicz(these were formerly in ty Zahiriyya Library, but now in the Assad Library. 1st late copy, Brit dated 1813, and is attributed to Shaykh`Abd al-Balbani 2nd estimated by Chodkiewicz to be from the 16 th or 17 century and is attributed to Shaykh` Abd Allah al-Balyani.

  • Look deep within. And you cannot help seeing Christ, buddha, krishna, Allah all with no name, no form, no shape, but ever is. Beyond with and without, beyond creation and creator, you will see what there is. And when you find this, which is your very birth right, the peace, love that comes is inexhaustible and unending. And in that moment all your pain, misery, suffering will be of no significance. This is coming from the mouth of one who has struggled so much more than you can ever imagine. And has done the stupidest things for the longest time
