After a day off from shooting the new season of Shark Tank, I join my friend & fellow watch collector Teddy Baldassarre as we visit the only place I'd prefer to be on a day off in L.A.
We head over to F.P. Journe and spend the day viewing some incredible pieces. Stop the madness!

Jesus, Laurent is visibly showing the utmost restraint every time Mr. Wonderful says investment. Journe is an investment of effort, knowledge and appreciation of horology, not necessarily the retrained value.
You could definitely tell that he wasn’t comfortable. Just because Kevin got famous from being a good investor doesn’t mean he’s gotta talk about everything as investments. Sometimes you just gotta appreciate a watch for what it is - a piece of art.
Yea, there was definitely tension between them. Got the vibe Journe didn’t love the way Kevin was talking about their watches.
Especially when watches are awful investments and buying up as a scalper fad premium bullshit sells out so many of the talented legends into lame bullshit Most importantly, you sound like a cheap fuck, who sees everything in a grimy, pointless mindset. A pleasure to hear Laurent state that the point of the watch is to wear them, and that they are not fragile - its a shame when a watch is hidden away in a safe. Especially the mass produced
You do have to respect them still considering what they are. I've fried a couple mechanical watches from daily wearing them. Sure they were fixed by the manufacturer but it's 6+ week turnaround time and thousands of dollars.
People hide away a lesser pieces also makes me sad the only point is to wear it at any price point from seiko to that 18 complication piece they showed at then end

Laurent was wearing this piece (@7:29) when I bumped into him in Aspen, CO in August. He was such a kind gentleman and took it off to let me examine it and it made my entire weekend! I can't wait to own an F.P. Journe myself, and I guarantee you I won't be going on and on about "investment piece" - it's something I'll wear and cherish and pass down to the next in line!

I think he's referring to the movement and not the watch. Journe made only brass movements in his watches for the early part of the company, so the movement being in gold means it was designed since he changed over to primarily Rose Gold movements.

I’m glad that Kevin refrained from talking about his stupid red straps after Laurent finished explaining the two barrels, constant force remontoire, the bi-axial escape wheel, dead beat second, etc.

Interesting to watch Kevin try to hog the limelight. It was great to see that the masterpieces are the center piece of the video, and kudos to Laurent for sharing the innovation that went into each piece. Maybe there will be a follow-up video with just Teddy and Laurent, and Teddy letting Laurent share his knowledge. I like Kevin, but he needs to listen more to what Laurent is saying and let him finish his thought.

Kevin and Teddy need MORE collaborations. I spend most of my time rewatching these videos on Teddy's channel, and this one. The lesson learned is fluent speaking, taste, and difference of opinion is okay. You guys are just fantastic.

Kevin is everything that is wrong about watch collecting. I can’t imagine FP being happy about him talking so much about his investments and how he used his influence to cut the wait list
FP shouldn't deal with this chav with money.
Kevin is always talking about the dials and getting watches for the dial only. Real collectors go for craftsmanship inside and historical pieces but not about just throwing your money around for them. John Mayer’s collection would not appeal to Kevin

Kind of wrong to shame people for wanting to collect for different reasons, because Kevin IS right dial is very important for a collection. I mean would you want to see the same style of dial on all your pieces, as for Mayer there absolutely nothing wrong with him collection for history either. I collect for both reasons when I buy watches I look for dial, movement, case size, shape and material.
Kind of wrong to promote and profit from the biggest Ponzi scheme in the history of our country in FTX. Also kind of wrong what Kevin and his wife did when they were drinking on their boat and killed someone

I'm not a frequent watcher of O'Leary so maybe it's a part of this channel, but it kinda bothers me how many times he mentions the "investment value" of the watch before he actually says something about the design, ingenuity etc. Still, he's known for being a businessman, so I understand it.
Totally. But he’s kind of self-branded himself this sort of shrewd and crewed business man. It’s always about the money. He’s like that art collector that only gets a piece for its investment sake.
Yes thats understandable. I watch kevin a lot and this guy LOVES (making) money. He loves working and being successful, and he measures the fruits of his effort in terms of monetary value. The money represents FREEDOM. This is largely connected to his happiness and sense of self worth. Theres more metrics for his happiness, like family, but in public the thing he talks about most is money and success. And lets be honest, this guy worked most of his hair off and as a result he is very successful and free to do what he wants. Heres the thing about kevin regarding watches. One of the things kevin took on as a principle is to always make money somehow when he does something, if possible. The same goes for watches. Kevin really loves watches, primarily because of the beauty of the dial design, but I also believe this love is partially conflated by his love of making money/freedom. I bet you that kevin will be more compelled and obsessed by a watch if its also a good investment. Who can blame him, investing and making money is what he is good at, its where he derives his self love, meaning and freedom from, something most people can use a lot more of. Of course he wants to communicate the merits of his efforts, insights, decisions and assets to other people. "Look at this amazing investment that I made" is what he is trying to say when he mentions the investment value. We all want to communicate the things we are proud of and we often do when we get the chance. When he does, he logically makes it seem like its just about money and status, but its not. For example, even though his stocks have better returns (presumably) than his watch collection, he really does not love his individual stocks as much as he loves watches. Not even close. The foundation of his love for watches is the appreciation and preservation of art, with the extra benefit of also making money. Personally that doesnt bother me, rather it seems like a valid approach to many things in society, investing and life in general.

Great pieces. I regret not pulling the trigger on a Chronometre Bleu 3 or so years ago for just under USD20k. It was all I could afford at the time and would have delayed plans of leaving my job by a couple years. Still kick myself each time I think of Journe.

I think Kevin does truly love watches, but he is the man he is and he can't separate the man from the businessman. It's just who he is and I do love the fact that he surely doesn't try to be who he's not, it's almost a seamless transition from these are works of art to that's what 250 grams of platinum and what do you think this would trade for. Accuracy is part of the art for watchmaking, it’s like pursuit of perfection. All great artists are pursuing perfection in their mind, but it’s just not accuracy.
The journe dead second tourbillon and the new one with the flipped tourbillon is quite possibly the most incredible single watch ever designed.

If they happen to increase in value, that is one thing, but get a certain hard to obtain model, and flip it, you will be black-listed by the AD. Journe are about making complication masterpieces in the shape of wristwatches, they are not about creating something to be traded like a bar of bullion. People like O'leary have little grasp of the nuances of watch collecting.
I get that Kevin is a money man but these watches are more about the art than the value, I really think that point flies over his head

Wow I’ve wondered if there was a sunrise sunset complication but dismissed it because that would need to adjust daily but more importantly involve knowing what latitude you’re currently in. No idea how he did this or if anyone else has? To me, sunset/sunrise + moon phase + compass bezel would be such a cool watch. Ultimate outdoors watch.
