"Sportier than you might think." Mazda should totally adopt that slogan.

Mazdas are definitely one of the most underrated car manufactures
I bought a mazda 3 2009 recently and I have never fell in love woth a car so fast. Its such an amazing car it handles perfectly and is very sporty when u want to do that and u can cruise and enjoy. Not to mention the great speakers Bose
I think they do really well with their designs, but I don’t think they have a good reputation when it comes to performance/ reliability compared to its counterparts Japanese big brothers(Honda and Toyota). Compared to Korean or American brands I think Mazda does really well.
Chanyang Park yea out of the Japanese brands, they’re definitely not one of the most reliable but they feel more luxurious on the inside and have much nicer designs than let’s say something like a Honda Civic
Purchased a 2020 CX-5 a couple months ago and absolutely love it. I disagree with what Doug said about how it drives. I found it more fun then other crossovers and I test drove most of them.

Yeah don’t take Doug’s opinions as fact. He literally called out Mazda’s touchscreen for doing exactly what it’s supposed to. Not being a touchscreen and being farther away from the driver.
Matter of taste
I mean most hatchbacks look like what VW, Honda, or Renault make. But okay. The car with no rear visibility look good cuz egg shape or something, so don't mock it or something
Yeahh haha
soul styling is quirky, mazda 3 hatchback is just hideous
9:39 I actually appreciate that Mazda created minimalistic, nontouch and small screen infotainment. The center of a car should be driving experience and not infotainment. And also there will be less distraction with smaller screen. With Mazda I would just like it a little lower so it does not distract the drivers view and having smaller bezel. And not only that, Mazda supports HD audio files (FLAC) with Bose system so it really shows how much they care about people enjoying driving the car.
Yeah, I would prefer there to not be any infotainment at all. So the mazda way is absolutely fantastic imo.
AGREE!
Honestly yeah. I had a 15 crosstrek and the screen was huge but I really only ever looked at it to turn on the Bluetooth or the camera backing up.
I couldn’t agree more. The screens are placed in a way that your eyes travel less distance from the road. It’s a safety thing in essence and driving experience benefit if you think about it. Godspeed
Bigger screen might be better though for reading faster. That’s probably the only improvement.
Mazda has the best red metallic. It looks stunning in the sunlight.
seems to damage very easily sadly, multiple friends are having major issues with it and have been arguing with mazda over it (2 of them barely drive the cars and look like they race down dirt roads)

It's crazy to me how there aren't more Mazdas on the road. They are phenomenal cars. I've had my 2019 Mazda 3 for a few years and I wouldn't trade it in for anything that's new on the market.
I just bought mine the other day. I love the car so much. So affordable and it feels luxury. Cover the logo and people will think it’s another brand like BMW or Audi
That's good to hear. I'm going to buy the same 2019 Mazda3 GT model, it already has a mileage of 100k km, should I be worried?
80G on my 3 Premium MT. Only issue is that the factory tires were embarrassingly terrible. Upgrade to Continental DWS or Michelin Pilots ASAP for the best handling experience, significant improvement. Otherwise, this car punches way above its weight in driving enjoyment and overall handling. It’s not a hot hatch at all, yet the 186 hp lays down gives it some nice torque after 2500 RPM. In my mind still one of the nicest looking cars on the road, even after five years with no change
What I like about the car is that it doesn’t have a CVT. Thank you Mazda!
Hello can you please tell me what is CVT thanks.
Guillermo Vasco, you don’t want to get, period. Terrible transmission!

Mazda and Volvo are currently my favorite looking vehicles atm, both look beautiful but overlooked
you are absolutely right. I never owned a Mazda before until 2 years ago when my E39 525 BMW was giving me too much trouble, just a money pit. I bought a 2012 Mazda 3. 2.5L engine manual. has everything except nav. leather. I really enjoyed that car and not given me any issues (knock on wood!). I started getting interested in Mazdas . Test drove the CX-9, beautiful car! this one is great also. Mazda is doing great with their line ups and they have really great interiors.

Hey Doug, I've noticed in a few videos that you mention the missing pocket on the driver seat is cost cutting. The actual reason for that is not to disturb the driver, especially in family cars, kids tend to put too many stuff in there and yank on that thing for no reason thus moving the seat and bothering the driver, so some automakers decided to completely remove it. That's why its always the one on the driver seat missing
Nah its cost cutting. Many brands do it. If that makes you feel better to make up a story around it, ok.
I think both reasons makes sense tbf, but it’s probably more on cost cutting, but the excuse given is so it doesn’t unnecessarily disturb the driver. You can get it after all as an upgrade.
also as the driver its so much harder to use the one on the seat your sitting in. its beyond easier to reach to the rear of the passenger seats. I already dont use those pockets anyways, but if I did I would not even USE the drivers seat one if it was available.
@@WorksOnMyComputer yeah, must be a lot of money saved. The explanation provided is sooo stupid. Lucky us to have you.

Doug - going through radio channels one by one - you use the 'next' and 'previous' arrow buttons on the left steering wheel brace. Also - dim the display brightness by turning the trip-meter push-button.
The reason that they don’t use a touch screen is because it takes your focus off the road. You can use the knob to do everything. It took me awhile to get use to it. Now I love it
I worked for a Mazda dealership. They really are well built cars. No big issues, easy to work on, drive smooth and are pretty cheap.

You can thank Scotty for the dislikes. That speaker blows!
Mazda really go their own way. Have you ever seen an economy car interior that is remotely in this car's league? The Hold feature is brilliant - it removes a major source of fatigue during city driving. And I love that both-pedals warning! So often I see cars on the freeway with their brake lights constantly on as they cruise with the traffic. That is a giveaway that the driver has their left foot on the brake pedal and is rapidly wearing out their brake linings. This warning gives them the scolding they deserve. Go Mazda!
Even the 1st and 2nd gen interiors are comparable to what you would see in a lexus or acura luxury car, I love mazda!
I think this car is a no brainer for a young dude looking to start a family lol. You could totally get chicks with this car I feel like.
I had 2007 Mazda 3 (European model), sold it in 2015 to a guy I know. It has NO sign of rust. @@caerroma ive been in both, merc and mazda 2018,own by my parents . Quite similar, trust me.
The Mazda3 ditched the touch screen for safety purposes. They also pushed the screen way forward to minimize your glance travel from the road.
Also, they're Just about THE only NON luxury brand to give you the German style control knob last I checked (i.e. i drive & whatever Merc & Audi have). Not only that but literally across their entire lineup (I believe the bigger nissans have something similar, but most likely NOT available on SL/platinum Rogue/sentras/altimas/etc). Even the subcompact enterprise lot econobox Yaris iA sedans (which is literally just a badge engineered Mazda 2) has the control knob. And I certainly can't be the only person here that'd rather have that knob rather than getting your presumably dirty hands all over the screen and it starts looking disgusting just within the week alone. Granted it IS a pain in the ass to change radio stations unless you're going through the favorites. Especially outta town; Keep forgetting the buttons DON'T "seek" through each station, but rather only the preselected favorites.
It's so obvious, how could he not figure that out?
Still, if you're going to add Apple and Android, as people have been demanding, and those are touch-activated on your phone, it's counter-intuitive to make you use a controller and watch the screen, to do what one touch will do.
@@Tarmac76 infotainment should be a comfort feature first. Not done so as to provide safety.

For once I agree with Doug. Mazda 3 is the Best car in it's class. The Best looking too. Mazda is the hot Japanese car company at the moment. I love the design all around. The combo of naturally aspirated engine and automatic transmission is the one to buy. Not a fan of turbo charged motors and SVT tranny's. Build in Japan factor is Huge for me. Simply the best cars with highest quality and reliability. Great job Mazda👍
Exactly
I bought my 2020 Mazda3 a few weeks ago, and I really like it. It has a sleek elegant design, inside and out, and it performs really well too. I purchased the Select trim, which is just one step up from the Base model, about $21,357 not including sales tax and doc fees. The Select trim has all the safety features I was looking for, including rear cross traffic alert, lane assist, auto cruise control, Apple car play, and more. Other manufacturers force you to purchase more expensive trim levels to get these features. As for the infotainment center, I find the sound system much better than my 2018 toyota, my trade in. I like it without having to touch the screen, which happens to be plenty big enough, because I find it easy to navigate, and it doesn’t get my fingerprints all over it. To avoid having to scroll through all the radio stations, simply create a favorites list, and this will make it much easier to skip to your next station. One last thing. The Mazda3 has a Sport mode, which I really like a lot because it helps me to zip around traffic and it’s also a lot of fun to drive.
By putting the infotainment screen high up and far back, you don't need to refocus your eyes from the road to glance at it. It's quite nice once you realize it. Also, unlike so many other cars... you *CAN* permanently turn off all or some (your choice) of the safety features.
Jetfowl i would hope that lane departure auto assist would be one of those features you can disable...i live in an area up north where roads are constantly being worked on and lane shifts happen frequently...if that info isn't uploaded to Mazda's database it will steer you into the wrong lane or into a barrier i would think?

You can switch between your favorite radio stations by the press of one button: either on the steering wheel (next / previous), or by pushing the small wheel dial sidewards. Hold the star-button to add a station to your favorites. I personally love that they've gone small and non-touch screen with the infotainment. Especially while driving I much prefer using the nice-feeling dial over tapping on some tablet. But of course that's a matter of opinion. Great review!

GPS cuts out and loses signal in tunnels. So instead of seeing a “No Signal” alert, you can see a tunnel. Sort of a visual continuity feature I guess.
Could be a feature to not be blinded when driving from bright sunlight into a darker tunnel. The screenbrightness might be a problem.
Does it give you some idea how long the tunnel is?
David Morse not necessarily. Although you can see where the tunnel ends on the GPS map even though the GPS has no clue where you are in the tunnel until you exit.

I bought a 2009 Mazda 5 grandturing 2.3 from a Japanese guy that had it since 2014 always well taken care of and I love it my best car I’ve had
The tunnel setting shows an overhead view of the tunnel's path on the screen once you're inside it. That way you know in advance where the left/right turns are, and the total distance you'll be stuck underground (in miles). It's a neat feature.
Probably the best looking interior and exterior for this price.
Lucas Rand or any used Merc
@@younewser love to buy me a used benz that's far more unreliable than a mazda 3
Personally think the Civic RS Sedan looks better on the outside. But for the price point, you can't go wrong
i agree it looks beautiful, especially the interior
This car is absolutely gorgeous inside and out and drives so well and can be had with a manual. I'm buying one when it comes to the Middle East.
Awd doesn't come in manual btw
6-speed manual is only available with the loaded model now (PR / premium package) and doesn't come with AWD.
The most important part in a car in the Middle East is its AC ...
It will never have the same specifications/options that the US version has.
How do you know it drives so well if you have never driven one yourself ...
Great review. Just what I was looking for. Cheers Doug.
I love my Mazda 3, I like the simple interior it’s very minimalist ❤️🙃
Great job . Keep the "normal cars" reviews coming.
Another normal car he should do is the Ford Explorer
I like the funky cars too but the times when he does normal cars are helpful
Y'all ever watch Regular Car Reviews?
I really do want more affordable cars review
That’s why I asked for the Ford Explorer it’s like 30,000 brand new which isn’t that much for a big suv
BMW, Porsche, and Mazda does the “manual shifting” the correct way.
Especially since an actual manual transmission is still an option for the Mazda.
And Alfa Romeo bitch please...
@@SteelJM1 sadly the gli manual is a better buy than this, they need a turbo in this car haha
@@IReahpZz I'll take a Mazda over a VW any day.
@@SteelJM1 lol sorry but if your in it for performance, you're going to be stuck far behind the tailights of a gli, straight line or cornering. At least the gli gets an lsd and Independent rear suspension along with a manual in every trim and a 7speed dsg that's hands down the best auto in the segment.
Thanks Doug for mentioning TPMS which hardly ever talked about. I love my 2016 Mazda 3 Hatchback l Grand Touring, but hate the tire monitoring because it's real time. When the light comes on I have no idea whether I have a slow leak or if I going to be stranded on the highway. I might upgrade for this very feature. Tires are not cheap anymore...
Thanks doug for your information about the gear lever selection, I never understood why they did it that way
Doug the type of guy that prefers the Kia Soul to Mazda 3

@Lamingtxn yo but tbh kia soul drives really well. i rented one a few days back thought its gonna be bad, but i am honestly surprised.
@@ddjohnson9717 still looks a bit quirky
@@qlus true
Soul was giant flop in Europe, Mazda 3 is really popular. Guess why?
Kia Soul is the ugliest thing on the market alongside the Fiat 500x.
Mazda will always be slept on, at this point its kinda cool that lol. Had so many compliments on mine
I absolutely LOVE the new Mazda 3 sedan! Thanks for this review
Doug cuts his own lines knowing that they are extra. Thats really good thinking from Doug i think other manufacturers should cut paper from his book.
You haven't found the quirkiest feature though! When you want to squirt windshield washer, it comes from the blade itself (like an S-Class) and not from a small hole in the hood like every other car!
It's like that too on my 2009 Mazda 6
The newer Chevy trucks have it too. Nothing like paying $300 to replace your wipers every year.
@@jaysavage6493 YOU'RE** an idiot buddy. work on your reading comprehension skills.
@@bdcasey11 every year? That frequently?
Jesus christ sounds expensive
Skyactiv G is actually pretty simple. It uses a high compression ratio but to avoid knock, it reduces residual gas by shaping the piston differently and optimizing fuel injection to get an even air-fuel mixture
Yeah pretty cool, but Toyota beat them at their own game with their new 4cyl. Still anytime you get more power for less fuel the better.
@Some Guy If you're saying you need to "floor it" to reach 140 km/h, then in my opinion that is probably an incorrect statement. In my 2015 Mazda 2 (90hp) (Demio in US?), flooring it is only needed to go above 160 km/h and the top speed I reached was 184 km/h. I've found the amount of torque of the Mazda engines to be very good above 3.000 rpm. Interestingly enough, as I reached 180 km/h or so, the car advised me to shift from 5th to 4th gear, but I didn't really dare as I was afraid I'd go over the rpm limit. :D
My mom has the hatchback, and it's a great car to drive. She had to decide between the AWD or a manual, and ended up going with AWD. Shame you couldn't get both together. But it drives super nice and the interior just feels amazing
that side compartment to the left of the wheel is perfect for garage remotes, receipts or spare change for toll booths
The hatchbook looks for some reason only weird on photos, it looked completely different when I saw it live. And then I bought one :)
Totally agree with you. Pictures dont do the hatchback justice. Mazda shaped the body to leverage reflections and you need to see the car in person to truly experience the effect. Mazdas biggest challenge is perception. This new 3 is the sort of car you cross shop with Audi A3s not Corollas and Civics. But people have bias. I own a 2018 Mazda 6 Signature and test drove MANY cars and for the money it doesnt leave much on the table compared to cars at twice the price.
@@ocramidajzj which cars did you test drive and compare with the mazda
@@omarsabry4406 Audi A4 (twice), Alfa Romeo Guilia (3 times), Stelvio, BMW 5 series, Kia Stinger GT (5 times) Buick Regal GS, VW Golf R, VW Passat, Toyota Camry V6, Jaguar XF, Honda Accord Touring, Lexus GS350, Lexus ISF Nissan Maxima, Infiniti RedSport. And for the money the Mazda 6 Signature was the best value. It isnt perfect, but it crushes the Japanese models as far as overall design and dynamics and doesnt leave much on the table when compared to the Germans and Italians at 20-30K more. Honestly the cars that were the most in the running were the Guilia and Stinger. The Guilia because of its personality and Stinger for it V6 and hatch. Ultimately, I could not rationalize spending the extra money, especially for the Guilia given predicted reliability. IMO

Doug, your entire rant between 10:00 and 11:00 is completely solved with the previous track / next track steering wheel button. It goes between channels or favorites, depending on how you have it configured in the settings.
Doug, as interesting as he is, is not always the brightest dog in the pack.
marvel marv LOL
Doug: "Doug no read words good"
Cant believe he doesnt know everything about every car. What a dumbass
I think this is wrong. I bought a Mazda3 today and the previous/next track steering wheel buttons do the same thing as the wheel - only rewind or fast forward the current channel. There is no option in the settings to change this.
I own the 2024 Select Sport in ceramic metallic. A little work of art on wheels. I decided to buy the car after watching this video. You are simply awesome. Best review ever.
After hundreds of dougs videos, this is the first time I actually saw doug scores.
- "My Favourite" - Scores 48 - OK
Yohanes Albert Marshal he's an idiot
Bear in mind that the score also applies to cars like Rolls Royce Phantom, Bugatti Chiron etc
He doesn't actually like the Mazda 3, but Doug is pretty active on Reddit r/cars, and that sub loves the Mazda 3 so he's basically trying to be on their good side because they all circle jerk Doug's videos to death

Thanks for the video man. A lot of good info.
The mazda 3 hatchback looks weird to you, but the kia seol is just fine? I think you've completely lost me Doug... what's with all the hate?
I think the Soul is so weird and quirky that it looks charming (somewhat, and to some people). The m3 hatchback is too different to its previous design so it just comes out as weird (for now).
To understand Doug's design preferences, you must understand Doug himself. Doug is a weird chap, I wouldn't have a drink with him but I would definitely have a very short, short chat. Why you ask? Well he's weird. Therefore his style taste is weird. The Kia Soul, is weird. It's like they we're meant to be together. A match made in heaven!
@@Homemedrunkimtake Doug is quirky
Not only that, but he didn’t even compare the Mazda with its competitors. I don’t know how he categorizes cars in America but In The rest of the world the 3 doesn’t belong in that category.
Yeah, there is no way to make the kia seol look good so they went with quirky.
Thank you Doug for reviewing these "budget" compact cars!! I can actually buy one of these cars you review now rather than envy them! Thank you again!

Mazda chose not to go all touchscreen because they're distracting. You just drive
Try using those dials while driving... Way more distracting than a touch screen.
@@afqt80 Use them everyday in my mazda and once u get used to it its way better than the touchscreen in the Honda I used to have. Still think its better not using them while driving on german Autobahn though;)
@@afqt80 You use dials by feel without ever looking, but you have to look at the touch screen to see what the hell you're doing.
Mistake
@@afqt80 I have a 2018 Mazda 3 and couldn't disagree with you more. I can use the touch screen or the dials, and the only time I ever touch the screen is when I type an address into the Navigation system, which is super super super rare since usually I just use my voice with CarPlay/Waze. The knobs are one of my favorite parts about the car.
Mazda says they don't want people focused on other things but driving. That's why the screen is not reachable.
EXACTLY!!! *zoom zoom*
What do you want form company had refuse to make new RX coupe..... Just make one already..... I need new car...
I totally get what they are trying to do. Modern cars overwhelm you with buttons and features and things to look at. They are bringing back a dash more befitting a classic car though with modern style. But they need better software people designing their infotainment system.
That's not thinking about what the people want. they just made things more complicated and not user friendly.
@@2002altima It's prioritising safety over ergonomics. Less refocus time going between your surroundings and the HUD to the infotainment screen means less time not looking at the road ahead of you. The fact that it is not reachable is a side-effect of this.
Absolutely love the way this car looks :) well done Mazda now that’s what I call a proper car
09:55 Yeah, I find that absolutely amazing and nobody needs touchscreens inside their cars.
Mazda has amazing red Color car, a lot other companies have terrible red color
Mazda Red is amazing
It's the only red I'd consider buying. I normally don't like red cars but Soul Crystal Red is remarkable.
I seen a Mazda CX-7 the same color in all honesty it was breathtaking
Lexus red is the best
I have a Mazda cx5 2019 and I got it just for the red. Its amazing in the sun. It costs a little more than getting the same car in blue or black
Unfortunately, most people are pretty ignorant about Mazdas. They're always geared towards fun driving. "zoom-zoom", is the reason they've used this. As a CX-5 owner
Yesh and Doug lost some credibility when he said that the CX5 drives like other SUVs. Far from the truth.
Your comment reads you were going to say something about being a CX-5 owner
I start work for mazda in Koeppel all of this will help me tell my customers why this is or isn’t the best fit for them
