The Agawa ADK26 is one of the most unique bushcraft axe's I have seen. It's a combination of a Hatchet which has an attachable handle to turn it into a 26" Forest Axe. I've been testing it for a few weeks now and so far it seems really solid! I look forward to continuing to test it out and seeing it's durability over time.

Easy rule for traveling stuff: If I have weight, I have size. In these terms it's a stupid idea. It's the same weight of a forest axe with a plastic handle.
@@sergeykoshelev4566 -Talk about an argument that carries no weight... Firstly, to get the same versatility as this item, you'd need to carry both an axe, *and* a hatchet. So you'd be carrying extra weight (including TWO heavy metal heads!), right off the bat. Secondly, regarding size, this will easily fit inside a backpack. A 26" forest axe won't fit inside a typical hiker's backpack anywhere near as easily, if at all. Thirdly, the plastic handle isn't a liability. Not only is it hollow, making it lighter than a solid handle, this is a composite glass-reinforced handle. Meaning it's far stronger than a wooden handle of the same dimensions.

I love that method of making feather sticks you shared where the axe is stationary & you're just pulling the stick across the blade. Never seen that before. What a great idea. Definitely going to give it a try :)
It’s actually a great way for beginners to learn in my opinion. Don’t have to focus on both the knife/axe control and getting thin curls. All you focus on is the stick and curls themselves 👍🏻
I’ve grown to prefer polymer handles because they’re basically indestructible with normal use and they’re light weight. Not traditionalist, but for my canoe camping journeys I think I’m going to have to check this out. It’s great to see a novel idea seemingly designed and constructed so well.
Yep, there is a reason everyone in the forest industry is carrying something like Fiskars, not Gransfors

I got their kickstarter email the other day and said to myself this looks very interesting. It looks pretty resourceful and pretty reliable to go with the saw.
The fact that both handles are hollow makes me think it would be really cool if someone made a cap for both ends so you can fill both handles with survival gear. Fishing hooks, Cordage and such.

I just received mine last month from supporting the Agawa kickstarter for this axe. I’m super impressed with their design. I’ve logged hardwood in NY and VT many years ago in my youth and have used multiple tools to do the job. Most of my use now is for backpacking, motorcycle camping, and hunting trips. I am delighted with this tool (I also have a couple of their Boreal saws in different lengths) as it really strikes a balance for me in weight and functionality. It’s not for heavy forest work or even hard logging, but for daily and different camping uses this is an incredibly well thought out and useful hatchet/axe.

Best bushcraft feather stick info ever. I also like how you split the kinlin using the axe while holding the wood at two places at once to make smaller kinlin. Very interesting and informative. Thank you.
Interesting but all I see missing is a Sticker that says BREAKS HERE wear full body Armour while using.
Interesting! They could replace the litle tool to take the handles apart by a diamond sharpener to make it more versatile. You may suggest this to them :)

Came to check out a review on this agawa axe as Ive seen it on another channel. I also learned a new technique to split smaller pieces of kindeling I never seen it done that way before. I may have to purchase this axe to live in my kit/vehicle

As a trail builder in remote terrain, I dont think I could use it to take down a tree but for a camping purpose and light use it looks good.

Have you missed and bounced the handle off the log yet? Any damage? I'd be interested to see the shape of that head under the handle. It looks like it might be a design that would be fairly easy to improvise a field repair handle if necessary. It looks like you could carve a notch, or use a Y branch, and lash it up fairly easily, compared to trying to carve and fit a proper through eye handle in the field.
Some great points! I shall be the test dummy and “miss hit” some logs. Might need to wear some shin protection when I do it though 😂good question about the axe head, this is something I am interested in too and it confused me when looking at it. I will ask the guys about it and see how it’s been attached 👍🏻

Fishers has had hollow hafts for years. I have had one of their hatchets for more than a decade and it works fine. Interesting concept in an axe. Thanks 🔪🎸

The Hollow handle is also used in the fiskars line of axes. Like the fiskars x10 hatchet and the x27 forest axe. This extension handle is uniq and nice one

I really appreciated the scenes regarding the Council and their investigations into the Necromancer.
A folding saw and a take-apart ax makes quite the pair for a trek into the woods. I believe the reinforced fiberglass handle will hold up under vibration and the occasional miss while splitting wood.

I like the idea of it, but I can't imagine why I'd use that instead of my tried and true 28" forest axe and Leuku knife, that combo serves many more purposes. While that, is an extendo axe.
Interesting, the only question is what is the life of the spring's tension?
Its a similar design to husqvarna forest axes, the back of the head is designed to be a hammer which i use for hitting plastic wrdges when tree felling. That's been very good so would imagine that this axe will be good too
Should have made extending handle attachment, into a machete with pins to hold into place. Because with the attachment area being so small, over time (6 months to a year) may become weakened.
I innovated this method nobody else thought of where I grab the handle closer to the head.
I feel like a bolt or two could go through the joint at the base of the hatchet for added strength, and the empty holes could double as a loop for a lanyard. Also, the nuts and bolts may be a way to sneak another tool into the kit and store them in the base of the axe, otherwise, this looks quite exciting.
Semi-unrelated, but I wanted to make sure you know: I can confirm that you can get shaving-sharp from mud and wood to hone and strop. Credit to Clay Hayes for making it known to me. I appreciate that I almost always learn something new from your videos. That was all, lol. Thanks. :)

Great concept!! Like you, I'm wondering how the joinings for head and handle will hold up under use. Both regular and extreme. As a cache item for only emergency use it seems to be top shelf. I'll be watching for updates, thanks for the heads up on this.

Absolutely no way. This fills a niche that doesn't need being filled. A medium axe like that can already be choked up on, and I'd be paranoid of the handle coming apart which could be VERY dangerous. Agawa's quality though is good, their saws are amazing.
Gränsfors (near me) or Husqvarna for me anyway :-) Nice as that one is, I still want a proper axe/hatchet.
I had the same concerns when I met them in Toronto Canada. Was intrigued by the innovation and thought this would be great for backpacking. My concerns are the exact same as yours, as builder of things metal and wood, the joint should be your biggest weakness of a build. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this product cause I want one if it can stand up. My only concern is that you can't replace the handle in the woods if it were to break. One way to get the same effect in a more "traditional" way is to get a "tomahawk" type of axe fitting. You can just bring 2 handles, 1 long, one short and you can easiliy switch them. It's not difficult to make another handle for it, the fitting is way more forgiving for this style of eye. Rinaldi makes these great axes, they are absolutely beautiful axes, different types and weights and would easily last a lifetime. It would be super nice to see you review a rinaldi axe, they are well made tools with great advantages for the survival/bushcraft use !
I like the composite design concern I have is the axe head mount, over time it will loosen is there a wedge to tighten or do you replace the hatchet handle?

I got three traditional axes (small forest, forest and large felling) which I absolutely love... but at my parents house I got an axe with a hollow handle aswell and at first I was concerned....but it had warranty so I gave it a shot... and it never was any problem... its the axe with which I make all firewood for my parents and I still absolutely love it... But the connection part at this axe really looks scary at first... I also got the Agawa folding saw, so I trust the company...but I still cant get it out of my head =D

This is the second video I’ve seen on the same product and I’ll repeat my concern. The extension piece will be stressed along the spine (not the flat) at its weakest point. After repeated use, I’d be highly concerned for stress fractures along the spine and the clips. Same concern as yours. But for occasional use it’s probably OK.

I actually purchased through the Kickstarter. I am in the latest batch and should be receining it this month. ~$170 USD.
Excellent concept, until I saw the price... For half of it I can get a hand-forged axe head with its leather mask and make myself two tomahawk/shepherd's axe/Basque-style handles (inserted from the top and tapped tight), one short and one long. It takes about the same time to change the handle as it takes to clip the handle extension on for the ADK26, just needs a hard surface or a rock to tap on/with.
First thought when I saw it, 'I wouldn't be swinging that at a tree' Having watched the video, I'm thinking, that's kinda ingenious. Really would like to see it put to some extreme testing to see how it holds up. I love the idea but my mind is thinking about the safety. Not in the least concerned with the hollow handle, my Fiskars axe is hollow and I've every confidence in it. But a joint in a handle... I'm not sure I'm convinced.
that is indeed cool and I like my boreal 21 but why not use a slip axe head like the rinaldi one and carry two handles or well just make ine in the field?
pretty sure if it wasn't a kick-starter i'd add it to my amazon wishlist. have seen too many kick-starters fail, so i wait till there's an actual production product that's been in use.

My experience tells me that polymer pieces will eventually deform and loosen with repeated use. Where each sections are joined together, after many uses, will likely rub against each others, with friction and all, which will eventually create a gap that will allow sections to move even more, creating bigger gap, so on and so forth. Even metals pieces joined this way will eventually loosen and not be secure, let alone plastic pieces. And should those clips let go in mid-swing, you have a potential projectile headed for someone. It only has to happen once.
That's the said reality, but how long do you think? If it is safe to use 1 year from now, did you get your money's worth? 5 years? Time will tell :) New ideas have these quirks. I'm sure Mike will keep us up to date but I can see this becoming very dangerous if it does fail.
But even a traditional wood axe and hatchet see this too. So the point really come down to time and cost.

Interesting video Mike, I’d be worried about them clips long term, can see someone swinging back and the axe just going flying. Or sliding hand down the shaft and finger pinching or loosening clip over time, what’s the life of the spring before replacement? The idea is good but I always think a tool over thousands years old has been that good because it was perfected and works, maybe do a review again after one to two years of regular use. Maybe good for prepping bag or emergency axe in the boot. Could have a purpose but hasn’t sold me really. Nice to see people trying new ideas and innovation, it has a market defo
