  • That car is a motorway basher, you can tell by how the gear stick gator and steering wheel aren't worn to shreds. There's plenty of life in this car and it shows. I bought my last car with 120k on it, ex company car and it got me through another 30,000 trouble free miles. High mileage cars are not to be feared, as long as there is evidence it has been looked after properly.

    • We have a 2012 insignia with 162k miles, it runs like new. If you look after a car, it'll look after you. Regular servicing + maintenence and fix any MOT advisories straight away, and any car will make it to 250k miles at least easily.

    • David I agree. Was looking for a Mondeo a year ago but couldn’t drop on one in my price range as UK cars so expensive, if I saw a good one it always ended up being a diesel and I wanted petrol.Got a Focus in the end, a MK3. I always loved Escorts but not been with Ford for some time, drove Volvos and Honda and as much as I loved Escorts I can see why the Focus is well respected. I was never a fan of the MK 2 interiors but I love the MK3 it feels quality and looks nice. Good spec too just like the Mondeo’s. I was wary of those 3 cylinder 1 litre turbos as a second hand but they must have e your work so hard to pull a car like Focus around, I got the Duratec 4 cylinder 1.6 VVT. Had 67k on clock now done 77k. Had to replace a hose in last year but that’s it, fingers crossed. I changed oil after doing 5K as I always do with every car. It doesn’t burn any oil and it’s still looking pretty clean after 5K so that’s nice to see just about to book it in for full service. I’ve been in a few Mondeo’s over the years, very good cars, the Titanium and Titanium X spec cars looked very smart, and even the older Mondeo’s (pre 2000) I thought the interiors were much nicer than the German equivalent that were too dark and dull.

    • @@sandersson2813 yeah I know that was an issue on some of the motors but if you pick right Fords are nice cars to drive (see my post reply to David) . I’ve always loved them and I’m hindsight I don’t know why I loved some of them lol, take the MK2 XR2 for example. I obsessed about those as a kid but they were very basic and not especially fast compared with their rivals at the time, like Astra GTE and Pug 205, maybe that was the appeal though, car was so light and no electronic aids so a simple and fun car. A bit of tuning soon got them more lively though, my neighbour had K&N fitted with a sports exhaust and then had an upgraded Kent cam fitted and those 3 mods have modest gains but definitely made it feel a hotter hatch. Loved the XR3’s, RS Turbo’s, XR4’s and of course RS Cosworths. Ford always made popular sportier variants of their cooking models in the 80’s snd early to mid 90’s. Went a bit crap then until the first RS Focus came out. Sorry I’m rambling now, but the MK 3 upwards Focus (2011 onwards) have a premium feel to them. Very good driving position/handling, sound system is very nice too with loads of options. Mondeo’s always been nice to drive too, especially like 2010 onwards. Much nicer experience than Astra/Insignia and the like IMO.

I ran it for three years and put around 50k on the clock. It never put a foot wrong. Aside from the usual costs such as tyres, mot’s and services etc, I never spent an extra penny on it. Fantastic motorway cruiser too. I regularly took trips up to the highlands from Leeds. I only sold it because I moved to Japan otherwise I would’ve probably ended up with a 230k example like you. • My late husband had two old 1970s cars in the garage. I have no idea what they were. They were very low cars with two doors and both were painted in garish colours. They were also incredibly noisy when he started them up. He owned a steel importing business so cars were his oasis away from the pressure of business. I just left him to tinker with them. It kept him from being under my feet. I preferred my Nissan Micra anyway. I never liked his cars so a man with a trailer came and took them both away for free last month. I suppose I should have put new wheel trims on them like you did. They were much older than this car though so I don't suppose they'd be worth that much. I'm just glad to get rid of them. I have some photos of them somewhere.

Worth spending a bit on the wheels as they really add to a car's appearance. By the look of the interior I think you were being a bit optimistic thinking a 15 quid valet would sort it! Most vids I see are missing so much information and it leaves you confused and nervous about taking the step Into car sales. I'm self employed already but need an income to really boost our finances. Approaching 40 and doomed to never own a house for me and my young family, I need to move quickly into something new. Money is tight so it's hard to take the risk. Especially since I got quoted 2k a year for motor trade insurance! 🤢. Considering your course for later this summer. I'm not taking risks without knowing the 'road ahead'. • Earlier in the year, I picked up a 56 reg 2 litre diesel Mondeo Titanium X for £800 with 118k miles on the clock as just a cheap little runaround. Not a bad car either, got nice creature comforts on it like heated and cooled seats etc. Seems decent on diesel and it has full service history. When I got it, it was in a sorry little state. Needed the injectors doing which is a common fault on my model, got that done for £400 and the turbo actuator arm had seized up. Bought a replacement actuator for £25 off eBay, 10 minute drive on the job and now it drives good as gold. Hasn’t let me down yet, starts every morning and gets up and goes with plenty of life in it. Looked on auto trader the other day and same spec model with higher mileage than mine (121k miles on it now) is going close to 2k. Obviously the market is hyper inflated right now, but if this car passes it’s next MOT in May, which I’ve no doubt it will and keeps going for another year, I’ve definitely got my moneys worth from it imho. Plenty of little runarounds out there than can be fixed up like mine and the one you bought and sold on for some profit, just gotta look around and not be fussy over the littlest of things.

  • Whoever's bought that has got an absolute gem! If it was still for sale I'd have been *very* tempted myself! Back in 2015 I bought a Mk4 Astra that was due to be scrapped. Still had 9 months MOT on it, but the previous owner appeared to use it as a smoking shelter, never washed it and the engine management light was on. The interior was also filthy. Had the invoice from a service only 1500 miles previously too. I gave £120 for it and drove it home. Plugged in an OBD2 reader to check the codes, only one fault came back so I cleared it and it never came back. It had a headlight bulb out so I spent £10 on a new one, and a further £10 on air fresheners. Spent half a day cleaning it up and I was surprised at just how tidy it did look with a bit of TLC. Put it on eBay a couple of weeks later - as an auction, unfortunately - and it was bid up to £600. Of course the buyer was a complete messer, and by the time he'd decided he didn't want it other bidders had lost interest. So I ran it myself as a bit of a beater for the next 8 months and didn't spend another penny on it. Put in on eBay again as an auction as spares or repair with a month MOT left on it, expecting it to go for buttons, which would have been fine, I'd only spent about £140 on it in total and did about 6k miles in it. But it ended up selling for £480. There are definitely some decent buys at the very bottom end of the market!

  • The mk 4 Mondeo is the best car in its class. The 2.0 or 2.2 diesels are superb lumps and easily go past 200k with decent servicing.A high spec Mondy of this era are great cars. Badge snobbery aside you can't go wrong.

  • Knowledge is power. Wheel trims and number plates make a subtle but impressive difference. Having contacts such as your valetter who did a great job on their second attempt and while most ordinary motorists would baulk at £70 for a clean up I would say it was money well spent and added value. Credit also to manufacturers that use better fabrics and materials all round, so that poorly presented cars have a chance of cleaning up like new again.

    • tbh fords seat upholstery and carpets are not the best and this one probably didn't have too much passenger traffic in the rear of the car hence its decent condition after the valet. I've had a good few mondeos and focuses around this age rented out as taxis and the seats dont wear well at all compared to the skoda Octavia or VW Passat but they can go on forever if well serviced 👍
