  • Hi there gentlemen, As a first time listener to this group, you both (as mentioned by Brandon) observed NCT spot on. Their two trademarks are “experimentality and versatility” so you will never get the generic music sound you may already be familiar within the industry, and that was the reason why you commented them “seemingly from two different groups” …because their songs are never the same one from the next. Yes, they are 23 strong overlapping across 4 sub-units (with South Korea based, China based, and special project based being the other three). Very soon more members will be introduced and 2 more sub-units will be created which will be Japan based and US based. The graduation system was abolished some time ago due to the popularity of the DREAM sub-unit and NCTzens (NCT’s fandom name, pronounced as n-citizens which means citizens of the NCiTy) do not wish them separated. Therefore at the time of these two songs’ releases, they were no longer in the teens but already in their early 20s. Just a little correction to the father (sorry didn’t catch his name)’s question: they are not putting english in their lyrics to “try and make it here”. Kpop is already really big here in US, and most particularly NCT fanbase is huge here, so yes, while there are groups/agencies who are trying to promote hard here and make many of their activities involving the US, when NCT come here it’s either to meet the fans or by invitation of event organizers, even before they were as big as they are now. As a matter of fact, their focus is always really big in Asia. Just want to quickly comment how great this reaction video is especially with you both showing NCT music to this lovely family, and this is because their global fans are very diverse from kids to gramps, so it’s very refreshing whenever we see families with children and adult reactors here who are in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond and hear their thoughts. Thanks so much for checking out this extremely talented group, and hope you will do more NCT reactions in the future.

  • NCT is a very international group. For example, in NCT-Dream there are 7 members and they speak at least 5 languages. Mark, the leader of NCT-Dream, is Korean-Canadian, so his first language is English; RenJun and Chenle are Chinese, so their first language is Mandarin; and Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin and Jisung are Korean. Plus, they are only a small faction of what makes up the whole group of NCT. NCT-Dream is NCT's third sub-unit, which began in August 2016, and it is made up of the 7 youngest members of the NCT. All the Dream member's are currently between the ages of 20 and 23 years old (they were 14-17 when they debuted.) Mark is the oldest of the Dream members, and Jisung is the youngest of all of NCT. SM Entertainment originally created NCT-Dream with the idea that if they had a trainee that they felt was ready to debut even though they were really young, they would start out as a member of NCT-Dream. They were the cute babies of the group who were learning the ropes and honing their skills because they are young, but they are also some of the most talented because they debuted way sooner than a lot of trainees. SM's original plan was that when the Dream members turned 19 they were supposed to graduate from the group and they were no longer considered a member of NCT-Dream. Mark "graduated" from NCT-Dream in 2018, and Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin and RenJun we thought would be graduating in 2019 and form a new NCT sub-unit or be add to a sub-unit that already existed. (Which would have left NCT-Dream with only 2 members, with the idea that new trainees would probably debut sometime in 2020 and become members of NCT-Dream.) However, SM announced at the beginning of 2020 that they decided to make NCT-Dream a permanent group and suspend the whole "graduation" concept, including putting Mark back in the group. NCT was created as part of SM's plan to achieve global domination and one of the ways the company plans to accomplish that is to make music that reaches all types of fans all over the world, including younger fans. As the members of Dream grow and mature, so too does there sound and style. "Hot Sauce" and "Hello Future," are some of their more recent songs, so although it still sticks with Dream's concept of being young, it also fits the fact that they are all adults now. NCT-Dream became popular because they were different then all the other groups that were out there at the time of their debut. The Kpop industry is full of young groups who are trying to appeal to a more mature demographic. Therefore, fans appreciate Dream for the fact that they embrace their age and don't try to act and sound older than they are. NCT -- which stands for Neo (a pop culture term that means new/original) Culture Technology -- currently has 23 members. And the group right now as a whole has 4 sub-units. The way NCT works is it's a group with an infinite number of members. (There are an unknown number of trainees who are still waiting to debut who could potentially become members of NCT.) As SM Entertainment's male trainees graduate from the training program and SM decides they are ready to debut, they become a member of NCT and they debut as part of one of NCT's sub-units. (They just added 2 new members -- Sungchan and Shotaro -- at the end of 2020, who are expected to eventually become members of a new sub-unit.* ) *NCT probably will be growing to 26 members soon. SM has been showcasing 3 new SMRookies -- Shohei, Eunseok and Seunchan -- lately and they just recently performed at the SMTown concert with Sungchan and Shotaro. So, by all indications, it looks more and more like NCT will be getting 3 new members and they probably will be part of the new unit. It is speculated that the next sub-unit will be a Japanese based unit because Shotaro and Shohei are Japanese and they have recently been doing a lot of promotions in Japan. The members as a whole currently represent 9 different countries and they speak 8 different languages. For example, there are 10 native Korean members (Taeyong, Doyoung, Taeil, Haechan, Jaehyun, Jeno, Jaemin, Jisung, Jungwoo and SungChan), Mark is Korean-Canadian, Johnny is Korean-American, Yuta and Shotaro are Japanese, Ten is Thai, Lucas is Chinese-Thai from Hong Kong, YangYang is Taiwanese but he grew up in Germany, Hendery is Chinese from Macau (China) and 5 mainland Chinese members (WinWin, Kun, Xiaojun, Renjun and Chenle). However, they all live and work in Korea, so everyone speaks Korean fluently. Plus, many members have attended international schools or lived abroad, so there are several members who are also fluent in English, on top of speaking 2 or more other languages. NCT is a group that is constantly changing and rearranging its members and sound and we never know quite what to expect from them. With an infinite number of members, and a concept that allows the members to rotate between sub-units, changing, adding and subtracting members depending on the concept and style of the song, you should never expect the same thing from them. You are better off always expecting something new, that somehow, also ends up sounding very much like NCT. LOL Everything NCT does is about dreams, dreaming or being in a dream state. Therefore, that is the story you will see being repeated and referenced in all of their MVs across all of their sub-units. And on top of all that, it's also part of SM Entertainment's SM Culture Universe storyline, so it's connected to all of SM's other groups' MVs and stories, which is why their MVs often have a futuristic, otherworld look and feel to them. NCT-U was NCT's first sub-unit, which debuted in April 2016. NCT-U is made up of pretty much all the members, they just add and subtract members from all the other sub-units depending on the concept for the song. NCT-U songs can have anywhere from all the members or only 1 or 2 members. The U stands for United, but I also like to think of it as Universal because of the way the group never has a fixed number of members. This sub-unit is designed to be fluid, which means the group is constantly changing and rearranging its members. There is no telling how many members or even who will be included in any of NCT-U's songs. The second sub-unit is NCT-127. This group is more of a fixed unit so the members don't change quite as much. The 127 in this unit's name stands for the longitude coordinates of Seoul, South Korea, on a map of the world. So its 127's job to represent Seoul -- the birthplace of Kpop -- around the world. The fourth sub-unit is WayV, which debuted at the beginning of 2019. They are NCT's Chinese sub-unit who produces songs in Mandarin and promotes in China. There are currently 7 members in this sub-unit. All the members of WayV have Chinese heritage, but like Ten who is Thai, they aren't all native Chinese. Most of the members of WayV had already debuted originally as members of NCT-U + 3 new members who debuted specifically with WayV because they were Chinese. (Kun, the leader of WayV, debuted as a member of NCT's special project group NCT-2018.) The reason why WayV doesn't have NCT in their name like the other sub-units is because, at the time of their debut, the conflict between the Korean and Chinese government was at its peak and China wasn't allowing anyone associated directly with a Korean company to do business in its country. Because of this conflict, SM had to find/create a Chinese company -- Label V -- that was willing to represent NCT's Chinese sub-unit, but would also allow SM to have control over the group's concept and activities. NCT is SM's attempt at taking over the music industry around the world. SM's goal is to eventually have NCT sub-units representing every major city in every country in the world. Some day they hope to, for example, take several Japanese members and create a Japanese sub-unit, or put together members from Thailand and create a Thai sub-unit, etc. It has always been SM's plan to have world domination. And to that point, right now NCT-127 is the group that SM is using to try and get their foothold in the U.S. music market with English versions of song like "Regular" and "Highway to Heaven" and collaborations with American artists such as Jason Derulo, as well as a U.S. concert tours and promotional tours with the American media, etc. So, this year is NCT's 6th anniversary, but debut dates are different for any number of members because it all depends on when they were added to the group. And many of the members of NCT actually became recognized by fans even before debut because they were part of SM's pre-debut group project called SMRookies, so SM did activities with several of the members before they debuted. Taeyong (the leader of NCT and a member of NCT-U and NCT-127), Mark (a member of all of NCT's first 3 sub-units -- NCT-U, NCT-127 and NCT-Dream) and Ten and Lucas (members of NCT-U and WayV) are also members of the very first Kpop supergroup, SuperM, which is an SM group consisting of members from EXO, SHINee, NCT and WayV. The group is part of a collaboration between SM and Capitol Records in L.A., California, and is designed for the U.S. market, so a large majority of their songs are mostly in English.

  • To answer your question more thoroughly, Kpop doesn't add English lines and lyrics in their songs just to make it big in the U.S. They add English to their songs, which is usually primarily in the hook or chorus of the song, in order to appeal to a more international adienance. Afterall, English is the most spoken first or second language in the most countries in the world. (English isn't only spoken in the U.S. or the west.) Therefore, by putting English in the song it allows everyone to be able to sing along and for the song to get stuck in your head, even if you don't speak Korean. This allows them to reach an even wider audience and helps to create larger fanbases, which drives album and merchandise sales, gives them more places to hold world concert tours and fan meetings, and also increases viewership of their other projects, such as the TV shows and movies that some of the members are actors in, etc. And, switching up the beat and style of the song in the middle of a song as part of the dance break section is pretty much how all of NCT's songs are structured, as well as the majority of SM Entertainment's songs in general. It's kind of SM's signature style. You will hear that same thing happen in a a lot of the songs you listen to from SM. SM Entertainment is known for having some of the best dancers and singers in the industry. That is just a fact about the type of people SM selects to be a part of its company. You can't be an SM artist without having amazing singing and dance skills. So even the company's rappers are unbelievable singers and dancers. That is why the company has gained the reputation as the vocal powerhouse of the industry, who also happens to have some of the industry's top dancers. When it comes to SM, this is just the skill level we have come to expect. SM is an expert at finding and developing the best singers and dancers in Kpop. SM is the company that founded the Kpop industry with the very first Kpop idol group H.O.T. (Highfive Of Teenager) back in 1996, and they are now one of the largest and most influential entertainment companies in Korea and around the world. The company spares not expense when it comes to their videos, stages or concerts, etc. SM is one of the most innovative and trendsetting companies in Korea.

Also none of them have joined the military. SM keeps them performing until it's almost the age deadline for them to enlist. Moon TAEIL will probably be the 1st NCT member to enlisted in the military. I believe he is 27. He is supposed to enlist by age 28 I believe.
