  • This worked like a charm!! Our little cockapoo is not the best with new dogs and has historically made many enemies in the neighborhood. With this advice, we PROPERLY introduced her to my sister's dog for the holidays and they peacefully coexisted throughout their stay! THANK YOU!

  • I know this is an older video, but my gosh! So very helpful! A few days ago we brought a little boy , a Staffy, home who was being violently attacked by a larger dog in his house. My dog, a bixer/staffy mix, has been an only child. He's not the attacking type, but when he gives a warning growl to the new dog, the new dog is fearful of him for the rest of the day. Simply hearing that I shouldn't overcompensate with the new dog because of his past experience is going to help us a lot going forward. Thank you so very much!

  • Great. Worked. I made the mistake of not introducing them first and brought the dog into the home. It was a disaster. Of course. One of my dogs is fine. The other one NO, bad idea. Anyway, I took them for a walk. Oh my gosh, completely different dogs, different attitudes, not trying to eat each other anymore. Thank you thank you. I did introduced him out in the front yard which I thought was a neutral territory apparently not.

  • Too bad I didn't see this earlier:my sister and I both got new dogs at the same time, and since both dogs are way-ok with just about any other dog, we weren't being careful about introductions. Now we have to back up and start over: little spats happened in the house. So I figure although it would have been ideal to have done it this way from the start, we can get back some lost ground by going on walks.... they completely ignore each other when we're on leashed walks together. You gotta start somewhere! Hard to do this in this weather!!

  • A white female German shepherd just turned up on my porch yesterday. We took her to the vet to see if she was microchipped. No microchip, just a very hurt and confused dog. We suspect she was dumped near our house a week or so ago. She’s so sweet and beautiful so we took her in that night. Today we got her fully vetted and bathed 😊❤ we don’t know if we’re keeping her or just fostering but, we already have three other dogs (who are dog aggressive) so I think introducing slow and outdoors is best! Thank you for the good advice. I’m not a dog behaviorist but do love them very much and just want to see my pack thrive!!

Our dog that we already had started getting really snappy and growling at the new dog. I realize now that a lot of that is because of my stress and treating our old dog differently. I'm going to go take them for a walk. Great video with lots of good tips.

  • Thank you for the great and very well informed video! I have a 4 year old border collie who began life with us in this house growing up with an older sister, unfortunately the older sister actually bullied the younger one quite badly, to the point of bleeding. When we sought help from a professional trainer, as they were both puppies she suggested our best course of action was to find another home for the more independent of the two, which in this case was the older sister. Now, that’s the back story out of the way - our, now 4 year old border is extremely affectionate, clingy and doesn’t like being left alone; this is why I felt we should think about introducing another dog to her, as we all work in my house and she does have to go long periods of time in the house on her own; (she doesn’t seem ever want to play with any of my friends dogs as they are all older however, for the first time ever I saw her get really excited and playful with a Staffordshire bull terrier on a walk, once) What do you suggest I do? She tends to “act out” if she is left alone without me or my Mum at home by terrorising/chasing the cats or by scratching/gnawing on her legs and/or getting items out of my Mum’s room (stuffed toys etc.) and bringing them downstairs to chew. She is a really lovely girl but she does get jealous extremely easy but I want her to know it’s okay to play, I really think with her older sister bullying her all the time when she was younger she doesn’t understand that it’s okay to play and that she won’t always get hurt :(

And praise Nahvi for choosing her bed. I’ll say good bed good bed. Glad to know I’m doing some things right. The puppy also sleeps in a kennel. That way Tru knows that her place in the bed is secure. • Great advice as always. I tend to get a lift to pick up a new pup and take my other dog/s with me and I sit new pup on my lap so the older dogs/dog knows the pup is under my protection. I always have bitches and never had an issue doing it this way. I stress, this is with young pups only. With older dogs I would do as you suggest. So important to get this right. Best to relax and ignore the dogs mostly. When home I take all dogs and new pup desperate for a pee into the garden. Always under supervision . Great video Tom. So important to spread the love equally between the dogs . People do tend to feel sorry for rescue dogs and that won't help any dog. We need to make our dogs feel safe : ) You're doin g great work Tom : ) Thanks

  • Great advice! I have become involved with a rescue. I have 3 dogs of my own and we are getting our first foster today. I'm by myself and I've been training for over 20 years. You have really great tips about staying calm and not over-doing the love on the new dog. Most of the time I'm training basic obedience, PTSD dogs, and I have trained one protection dog. My question is, since I'm by myself, I'm trying to think of the best way to introduce my new foster into the home/existing pack. I have one male and 2 females. My girls are both rescues and get along with almost everyone. Or older rescue was actually a bit reactive to other dogs when we first got her at age 5. She is now 10. We used the "zig zag method" to correct her reactiveness and I couldn't believe it worked. It took us maybe 10 minutes. It didn't magically "cure" her reactiveness but we went from 3-5 fights a day to 3 fights in 5 years and those were tiffs more than the fights they use to have. Anyways, I'm trying to think of how I can safely introduce this new female bully-breed foster to my male, safely and by myself. My male is my unpredictable element. He's been to the dog parks before but I always had his ecollar on. Most of the time, he was fine. Every once in a while a dog would over step their bounds or he would be invasive and rude and the other dog would tell him to back off. Of course, he received that poorly

  • Thanks for the advice! We’re talking about getting a second dog but while our first dog used to be around other pups all the time and lived with one for years, ever since we moved out of my dad’s house and into a place where she was the only dog, she can be a little aggressive with other dogs. I think if we follow this advice, she will get along well with other dogs again as long as we introduce them properly.

We are introducing a new foster dog with physical weaknesses (recovering from being hit by a car and pelvis/legs shattered) to our pack of 3: currently 2 old well socialized and easy pit and heeler mutts and 1 adolescent nervous, high strung/high drive dutch shepherd type mutt. I plan to utilize ALL of the advice and insight given here and will absolutely save this video to share with all my friends who are adding new dogs! Would you consider making a Spanish subtitled version of this video so I can share it with my local friends here in Ecuador? It would help our rescue work SO MUCH. Thank you!

  • I’m so thankful for this video. I need to get my current dog to accept a new dog. This sounds like an awesome and reliable way to avoid disaster. I’m hopeful. Thanks a bunch!

    • Hey, did you do it? 😢

      @rebecalukacs3551@rebecalukacs3551 Жыл бұрын
    • @@rebecalukacs3551 I was not able to do it. The rescue dog I decided to adopt was so absolutely traumatized by us putting her in the car and driving an hour to our home that she would not even stand. It was awful. We had to physically pick her up and bring her in the house. We have since overcome most of that and now she loves walking on her leash and getting exercise. I’ve rescued a few dogs but this one has been the most stressful. She’s a dachshund pit bull mix and 3 years old. She was found abandoned in some woods in Georgia and was pregnant. I’m pretty sure she was abused. She’s so much better and I think with time and patience she will be more carefree. Cheers!

  • I wish I had seen this video last week! Have a 4 yr old Jack Russell and adopted a 1 yr old lab/husky mix. Did everything wrong! How do we recover? Have each dog separated in house but hard to spend time with hubby in same room when each dog needs one person. Lab has so much energy and Jack is trying to be in charge.

  • I definitely needed to watch this because my dog needs so much attention or she feels like we are leaving her. We got a new dog, and for the first time ever, she yelped for attention as my parents were giving the new dog attention.

  • Thanks for the info! Shelters aren't doing dog meet and greets before adopting, now so if I were to adopt this male GSD that is available, I'd have to introduce him to my 2 overprotective female GSDs on my own. Now I know must be neutral ground, and side by side.

  • Awesome vid as always! My 3 dogs met new pit mix puppy at adoption Center. I learned lots having an expert watch them interact that 1st time. When we got home I knew who was going to be resource guarding ME and not just toys/food. 1st week was slow interactions using kennels to separate and 1 dog at a time with puppy. 3 months later and all is well :)

  • When I rescued a new dog to my pack of 6-7-8 dogs I had the new dog at the vet, then shuttled my other dogs in pairs to greet the new one on “neutral ground” for 10-15 minutes, then went home with my two dogs and drove another pair to greet the new dog. Of course, that took the whole morning. Then when I brought the new dog home to the pack the pack was already familiar with her and “we,” dogs and I had no problems. I know such a thing is not for everyone, but I knew my dogs and what I did was based upon observing their behavior with adding new dogs to the pack
