  • Until Dawn really just hit different. Quarry would have overtaken UD for me if the creature design had been a little cooler. The Wendigo are just so awesome in UD and so unnerving.

    • Imo the werewolves in the quarry looked practically the same as the wendigo, like to the point that I thought they shared the same model. My biggest problem with the quarry is that the ending just flops for me, it comes out of nowhere and doesn't leave me feeling satisfied, one of the biggest oversights in the game is how even you attempt to get a everyone lives ending it will always be impossible be cause the end credits always show Kaylee Hacket as dead. And also the whole mechanic of characters being bitten then turning into werewolves like I felt that they could've done so much more with that, the only characters that possible werewolf Transformations matter like at the mansion scene at the end imagine how cool it'd be if you had to fight off all your turned friends at the end instead of always the same guy. Oh, and also, they wasted Nick's character, I always feel bad whenever I see a party of people playing the game and someone chooses Nick.

    • No chance! UD had better EVERYTHING! I wasn't annoyed by any of the character's VA. Even if the Wendigo design wasn't as good as the Quarry, it still would've been a better game overall. I don't just jump on the bandwagon of a game is better just because it's more recent. I choose the better game. Which is Until Dawn.

  • The reason why Until Dawn works the best, despite looking beautiful and being really atomspheric was how they handled story. Instead of going from point A to point B it had a lot of twists and turns that all worked together and explained everything. Dealing with Josh's pranks, his mental illness, wendigo, mines, psychiatrist... it was overall really sad yet amazing story and everything made sense. Also that ending where they give their statements to the police was amazing and really heartbreaking. I highly doubt that any other game is gonna achive it. I recently played Devil in me and it was quite good but as close to Until Dawn.

  • Actually the Dark Pictures Anthology are all based on true stories. Man of Medan is/was a real ghost ship called The Ourang Medan. Ourang translates to “Man of” and Medan is an Indonesian city. The witch trial events were based on true events, House of Ashes are based on true Mesopotamian myths and a curse. Devil in Me is based on America’s first known serial killer: Henry Howard Holms (H.H. Holmes).

  • I feel like until dawn will always be number 1 no matter how many or how good any other games they make are, the story is good and interesting, the characters are good and not overly annoying , at first I thought I wouldn’t care if Emily died until the “mine scene” (trying my best to be spoiler free), plot points are really good. While uses you make don’t matter much in the end, they still effect the story you’re playing as a whole. The whole plot point with the “creatures” you face in game is pretty good, and can I also say that the graphics are really good for most games that came out in 2015? Like they’re crazy good for the time of it’s release. Over all it’s a complete 10/10 with barely anything wrong it at all

  • Until Dawn was such a strong first game for them. They got the pacing perfectly, the graphics were amazing, the characters were realistic, well-acted and you spent a fair amount of time with each of them (obvs some more than others). I think the reason the subsequent games haven't hit as hard is that: A) they haven't managed to stick the endings. Something about having UD ending with the whole group (bar Matt and Jess) having a showdown all together just worked so well. The Quarry would've been so good if the ending hadn't fallen so flat, with characters all separated in different areas and not really feeling a big culmination of the plot, yknow. B) you just can't replicate that double plot twist that works so well in UD. House of Ashes definitely took a turn, which was cool, but something about having the killer but then the reveal of his identity, and then the second twist of who the actual threat was?? You can't replicate that 👌 7 years later i still bloody love that game despite never having physically played it 😂 And of course I love seeing all the new games they bring out too. Just nothing hits the same as good ol Until Dawn

  • Here’s my personal ranking, for all who will listen: 1. Until Dawn - Obvious choice and I feel like it has the best jumpscares in the entire “series” 2. House of Ashes - Honestly, this blew me away first time playing it. Salim is the best character in all of Supermassive Games, try and change my mind. This is also my most replayed Supermassive Games game. 3. The Quarry - Didn’t expect it to be that good. Not the best game ever made but I liked it and even replayed it a few times. 4. The Devil In Me - Loved the whole H.H.Holmes aspect and the “immortal killer” vibe, like Friday the 13th. 5. Little Hope - Now I’m not saying this game itself is BAD, I’m just saying I didn’t enjoy it that much. I liked some parts of it, like the twist was decent and the choices you made felt impactful, but as a whole I did it enjoy it as much as I thought it would. 6. Man of Medan - This one is pretty much self explanatory

Up until the end tho when u find out it was all fake and made up in his head was kind of dead and made it less scary which is why i rate it low. Man of medan - ngl i liked this game and the jumoscares scared the shit out of me up until u find out it wasnt a ghost ship and that it was just the mist. best game by far is Until Dawn tho self explanatory Hayden is bae all i gotta say. Moral of the story tho is FUCK GHOSTS.

    • In your opinion why is Erin more interesting than someone like Jamie?

      @flowgalo7634@flowgalo7634 Жыл бұрын
    • I just felt that Erin’s fears and personal struggle were a little more present than I’m Jamie’s character which we practically learn nothing about. With Erin we understand she’s a young intern interested in having a higher status in her job and gaining some respect, however to do this she has to battle her personal struggles such as her fear and her physical limitations (asthma).

    • Characters in the Devil In Me are meant to die more easily, as you can clearly see from the Curator´s obsession with it in the end. The game basically forces you to lose some characters, as you are up against perhaps the most intimidating adversary you have faced in the games, at least so far.

    • erin was the worst character though. jamie and kate were both really good and mark was alright.

    • I see so it's more so about her value to the game than as a character on a whole? As a plot device, I agree 100 percent. It provided a useful bit of story telling and the personal limitation she had did make you stay on your toes and added a little bit extra to the gameplay. It's done sooo better than Marks fear of heights (also to note, someone who I had the unpopular opinion of not finding boring). Something like asthma or relevant allergies really provides good tension to the environment in a horror setting. But if we separate what works well for the story and just go based on characters themselves, I actually found Erin to be the least compelling. These kind of feeble flighty characters are never my favourite, although arguably the most realistic. I have a harder time appreciating these characters and perhaps we simply didn't see enough of Erin to connect with her more. Jamie was probably a bad example because your right, we didn't go much deeper into her than what we already got, hard to say she had any growth, although I did enjoy the character on a whole. Someone like Kate though we know pretty clear cut what her desires are, about her thoughts and plans on being apart of the crew, and we get extra insight into her past that involves a traumic tragedy. We learn a lot about her piece by piece and she gets a decent amount of character growth. She kind of becomes a leader and acts extremely proactive in the attack against yet another serial killer in her life. It could perhaps be her acting so boldly to make amends for the actions she made in the past that she feels were partly responsible to leading death of her friend. However its without question that Erin had the best scene in the entire game for me. So just for what she does for the game it's very fair to say she's far from boring.

  • 1. Until Dawn - I need not say why this is the best. Jessica is bae. 2. House of Ashes - I like most of the characters, Nick is a bit boring and Rachel is a bit annoying. Eric is adorable and Jason and Salim are the best thing to come out of that game. The story was interesting. I always play these in shared story so having two characters basically be my own, and two be my friends made me feel more connected to my own characters. The set pieces are amazing, also Ashley Tisdale :p 3. The Devil in Me - This could’ve been on par if it wasn’t so buggy on release. People don’t like the characters, but I actually do. The mystery was fun to solve in this one and I love escape rooms in real life and it kinda felt like that. Like the deaths in the game and that you can save a doggo (even tho I lost only Jamie in my OG play through and it was to save said dog :/) 4. The Quarry - I think people gush over this game a little too much. This game has one sweet spot and it’s right in the middle. The beginning is boring and the ending is boring. The sweet spot is when the wolves attack Nick and Abi up until Laura is reintroduced, everything outside of those segments was so boring and uninteresting. I didn’t like most of the characters and the ones I did like didn’t have any story. 5. Little Hope - This would honestly be in my top 3 if it had just been real lol 6. Man of Medan - Plot was very predictable so I was never scared throughout playing. Kinda lacklustre ending. Didn’t like Fliss or Alex, Bradical, the water virgin sorta made up for that though. Overall I do love all these games, I think Supermassive may be one of my fave gaming studios. I’m always pumped for their releases.

Soon after that the bus characters visit Little Hope's museum and there are mannequins dressed as Puritans. You can assume that the main character went there on the school trip to learn about witch trials and that influances his hallucinations. And since he casts people he knew or saw as Puritans, maybe in that moment when the woman had no face, his subconscious was looking for someone to "cast" her us.

  • I’m convinced that most people who rank Man of Medan at the bottom either killed off/made Conrad escape at the start - or they played single player. Because being chased by that pinup lady in co-op was actually a great mindfuck. And in my opinion, it alone trumped all of DIM in terms of spook-type fright. Even if you think you’ve cracked the code and you “know” the monster is actually your gaming friend, at several points, the monster teleports in a way that makes you re-evaluate (wait, hold up, IS there also evil on this ship and I AM in real danger??”) while you have no time to really try to think, because you’re being chased and your pulse is up and the adrenaline is going and the lady looks more and more terrifying and sounds even worse. Not to mention how scenic it all looks at the top of the boat (even if the witch looks like a wendigo knock-off at that point), I think I had a come to Jesus moment, man. It was a much spookier visual than the saw-theme in DIM. Not to mention that the “what’s real and what isn’t?” aspect makes co-op really fun, because you can’t trust what you see. Do you attack the treat or do you trust that it’s your friend? When playing the dark picture games, me and my friend always pause after each chapter to rave and we had so much fun with MOM, going “oh my god, that was you?! Oh but did you see the- no?- what did you see then?” Honestly, MOM is a much more entertaining co-op than DIM. But then again, I guess it depends on what sort of horror you like. To me, saw-like traps and bodily harm aren’t exciting types of scares for me. I enjoy the spooky and mysterious. That’s why MOM with its aim for ghosty-ness trumps DIM’s “run or you’ll be hacked to death”. DIM was a big letdown to me. I had big hopes for the “right choices” being less obvious but I feel like it had the most potential with least amount of harvesting of it. Not that it matters - but since I’ve written this far, and you’ve read this far, I might just cap off my opinion piece with my own tiering: 1. Until dawn (ofc) 2. House of ash (oorah!) 3. Little Hope (those monster designs 👌 And that John/Angela team-up at the end 🤌) 4. Man of Medan (👹) 5. The quarry 6. Devil in me All that to say, I LOVE playing these games, best like worst, it’s a tradition for me and my co-op buddy.

There is no tension anymore and no risk because you can just don’t give a shit with almost all quick times and just survive

Of course, the impact is probably best when you play blind, but Conrad is the star and has the best action so I’d say it’s worth exploring on a second run. I really don’t understand why they gave us the option to cut him out of the story before it begins. Not just because his arc holds the game’s scare-jewel, but also because he and Fliss’ arcs together give them more character development than the others. I started out hating the guy but by the end, he was up there with my series favs. And Fliss wasn’t too bad either. … But at the same time I also admired the devs’ attempt at having choices that give said character paths that diverge so dramatically. Whereas other times, it feels like choices only determines if X wears a green shirt or a white one…

A good game should be good in single player as well as coop. You just have bias because you had a friend playing with you. Not a lot of other people played the game coop. Good comment though👍

  • I have a lot of problems with the Quarry from a story perspective compared to Until Dawn that just brought the game down for me. My biggest issue was the pacing, because it made one of the biggest mistakes you can make in writing and ground the upward momentum to a screeching halt with an extended flashback sequence right before the climax. I think Laura and Max's story would have worked better as playable epilogues to each chapter that culminated in Laura's return instead of the exposition dump we got. It was also much more predictable than Until Dawn because you could predict that the monster was a werewolf in the first few SECONDS if you were paying attention. It made the tension less palpable and I thought the creature design for them was pretty bad considering that they just looked like a more doglike Wendigo. I think it would have been better if they had chosen another obscure cryptid instead of a generic one. A massive part of what made Until Dawn work as well as it did was because the monster was something more obscure and creepy, and you didn't learn what it was until more than halfway through the game. I also didn't like how Nick was essentially written out of the story when he became a werewolf (though that might be bias because he was my favourite character and I thought the narrative screwed him over).

I’ve noticed while watching other lets players play it that it definitely has its flaws, but it’s so good because it was new to the genre at the time. It was the start to the rest of them and it left its mark on the world and that’s what makes it so special. My sister and I wanted to look into the rest of the Supermassive games to see which one we should play next, so thanks for the ranking! It was very helpful :)

  • 1. Until Dawn - duh. Emily is everything in this game. The whole lot of personality! Loved that! 2. House of Ashes - Eric is my boi, Salim and Jason are OTP 3. Quarry - nice try 4. Man of Medan - Conrad, Julia, the setting are the best parts of the game. 5. Little Hope - I kinda enjoyed that. I liked Daniel and Taylor a lot. I appreciate the reference to Silent Hill, but the final twist is so weak 6. The devil in me - Erin is the only one interesting character. Charlie is a daddy and that's it. Other characters are bland. I know that Saw vibe and serial killer may scare someone, but not me. The body horror should have been a bigger thing here, but it's not. And what are we scared of? A big guy who is nothing against a big group and unnecessary jumpscares? No, ma'am. The story just doesn't work. Not the best entry. I was really disappointed. Also, the sequences with crawling, balance and moving of objects are just boring. We are here for a detailed world and for its exploration, not for moving stuff

Also, I love Little Hope's ending, it blew my mind even tho it's true your choices don't really matter I thought it was a great twist and even a reason to replay it and look at all the clues of what's really happening. I'm more into cinema so it kinda reminded me of some films. With house of ashes I struggled playing it, at the beginning it felt more like a survival game which I would've prefered to play with the mechanics of a resident evil kinda game. But the twist completely saved it for me and the characters were great, but at the beginning you already know they're gonna end up below surface and that there will be creatures following them and I wasn't surprised by that, again, until the twist happened. Also something I'm missing from Until Dawn... other characters could actually get angry at you for choices you made and betray you. I want that back, the feeling of making enemies with characters that you also control.

What I despised was the sheer amount of bugs I had, and the accessibility options just outright didn't work 4) house of ashes This one is only here because I never really had a chance to appreciate it. I got to play the first half, and I loved it, but I didn't get to finish it completely. It'll probs be higher once I do 😅 3)the Quarry I actually really like this game a lot. I love the 80's, I loved the cheese, and honestly pretty much all the characters, like it felt realistic and I just wanted more interactioms. I just don't think it was quite up to scratch, and wish that we had more time with other characters too. 2) devil within me I LOVED this game. It genuinely made me actually tense for the entire time, and got me so scared. And oh man I loved the mystery and being rewarded for actually paying attention to the secrets, and didn't feel like it was so obvious and that the characters were stupid for not catching up 1) Until Dawn I mean how could you not?? It defined the genre, and I was obsessed when it first came out. Unfortunately it doesn't really scare me anymore because I've played it so much lmao. • My personally ranking (from favorite to least favorite) 1) Until dawn - the golden standard, most immersive/interesting plot, best characters, the scariest monsters, and overall the most fun 2) The quarry - a nice return to formula, I liked the cheesy 80s B movie horror feel the game had, the characters were arguable the most entertaining out of all the SM games with the best quotes and jokes (they were a little bit cringe at times but i got over it) the werewolf design was meh but they were still scary enough and the characters being able to get infected was a nice addition to the game. I thought the game had the most variety of scenarios of all the SM games as well. So not as good as until dawn but a step in the right direction 3) House of ashes - the setpieces are what make the game honestly. Outside of Salim, the characters are either boring (Nick, Eric,) or insufferable (Rachel, jason). However, I loved the vampires and all the insane sequences you have whenever you come across them. I loved the underground alien city section. Not only was it a cool design, but also so eery and creepy. So overall, I liked the game for setpieces and creatures, not the characters 4) Man of medan - the plot twist is incredibly obvious from the opening prologue so I was never scared of any of the "creatures" in the game. The pirates were not a ingaging or scary threat. the characters aren't entertaining or interesting. The acting isn't very good and facial mocap is noticeably bad at times. The environment of the game is very boring on the eyes and sometimes gave me motion sickness. HOWEVER, I do like that similar to the quarry, the variety of scenarios you can get is cool. That's the only thing really puts this game above the next two. 5) The devil in me - I WANTED to like this game so badly, but the presentation of the game is too bad to ignore. The characters are boring, the acting is awful, the mocap is awful, none of characters have any real chemistry with one another so all of the dialogue in the game is very robotic, the graphics look like a high end PS3 game, and the game is also incredibly buggy. 6) little hope - I could write an entire essay about why this game is horrible. But I'll some it up with this. As bad as Man of medan and The devil in me is, at least in that game, the decisions you make actually matter. While little hope is literally "Illusion of choice: the game".

House of Ashes - Just a well rounded game with a cool story, cool settings and good interesting characters. *cough* Salim and Jason *cough* The best of the Anthology so far. 3. The Quarry - was very promising and was on par with Until Dawn for me until that horrendous ending ruined it all. 4. The Devil in Me - A fun time and I love the reveal if you only manage to keep Mark and Kate alive til the last chapter. One of the best alternate endings of all the games. The story was fun and I like that the developers tried to improve things by adding extra mechanics and ways to interact. I loved the concept, it just wasn't executed as well as I'd liked. 5. Little Hope - The game just doesn't have any replay value after finding out that everything was just all in Andrews head. Makes everything you do seem pointless. The opening scene with the fire was great though. 6. Man of Medan - Same thing as Little Hope with the "it was all in your head" trope except this was just bad, but it's understandable since it was the first one of the Anthology so it was kind of the guinea pig to see what would work and what wouldn't. I didn't care about any of the characters and was just going through the motions. Not good.

  • [Major spoilers for Little Hope, kinda long but I'm passionate about this lol] I seriously think Little Hope has such a misunderstood story, the ending actually made me cry. Seeing people say the ending is the 'it was all a dream' trope is the same problem as when people misuse the word 'filler' for scenes that are slower in certain tv shows or movies, instead of realizing those slower scenes are important to flesh out characters and get you to connect to them and feel invested. The ending to Little Hope is not the ending that so many people mistake it to be. In fact, the whole story, all the time jumps, and the fact that you have to unlock 'character traits' for all the main characters except Anthony give clues about the ending and the story's themes of guilt, trauma, history, and self-forgiveness. In a real 'it was all a dream' ending, nothing happens in reality and it has no effect on the main character, rendering the whole story useless. But that isn't the case here- the whole time, Anthony is walking around in a real town, interacting with objects, talking to Tanya's old boyfriend, and visiting his old house that burned down. There's thematic depth to Anthony fighting his inner demons, visualizing them as physical demons that all his family members have to defeat and survive. Then unlocking the right character traits for his family shows whether or not he can truly remember them for how they were, not just misremember who they were before they died. Then the endings- they all depend on whether or not you get Anthony to forgive himself for the fire, forgive his youngest sister, and mourn his family members properly after decades of guilt. The actions that players make throughout the game directly affect Anthony's final actions in real life- whether or not he commits su*cide due to not forgiving himself, whether or not he gets arrested, or if he leaves the town for good and forgives himself to truly heal from his past. It's much more complicated than people are making it out to be, and there are so many people- an example being a KZheadr like John Wolfe- who could connect to the ending of this game. So I'm just sad that a lot of people don't see it bc they only think a horror game can be good if the monsters are 'real' the whole time, even though this genre of psychological horror is one of the many subcategories within it. But if the game still isn't your cup of tea for other reasons besides the ending, that's understandable.

    • Yeah, I get what you're trying to say. But for me, it was quite the let down. The first parts of the game, I absolutely adore. I loved the prologue of the game, quickly setting up its tone. And the actual meat of the game actually delivers well. The witch trials and trying to save everyone was really fun. But the ending just left me confused. And it was the same sentiment for a lot of people. I feel as if the game suffers from the developers pulling back. I would have loved it if the monsters were real and that they were trying to break the cycle of them dying each generation. But instead we got this. I still like it, but I wish that the game gave better hints and clues as to what was happening. I only understood the game fully once I saw someone else explaining it to me. And I think that that is the main problem of this game. The ending feels like it came from left field.

    • @@alexakana5020 I understand your sentiment too! I admittedly wasn't able to fully understand the ending until I saw someone's explanation video. This doesn't mean the game did a bad job at laying the breadcrumbs tho, bc the only way ppl were able to create such specific explanations from the story was that the game distinctly provided that necessary information to the players who were following along. But it was purposely hard to follow, mostly bc they wanted the ending to wrap all the loose ends together in a shocking/sad way. Which I think is completely fine, especially for a psychological horror game- everyone has a different perspective on art and our brains work differently, so some people figured it out early while ppl like us needed some help. And personally, I just love stories that play with my emotions rather than have a satisfying or cathartic message/ending- similar to why I love TLOU2.

And how sad he looked cuz his family was gone. The ending I got I killed everyone but Anthony. So to see him locked out of the house again and seeing his people die was so sad.

    • @@kimmidoll24 It definitely depends on the ending(s) you get; with all choice-based games you’ll never get the full picture or narrative by only getting one certain ending, so I don’t hold that against Little Hope or see it as a flaw. I was confused after only one playthrough, but watching a compilation helped me to finally put the pieces all together and I enjoyed what they were going for. If it were a linear game where all the endings were basically tied into one complete, neat bow, that might be more satisfying for a larger audience to experience. If you prefer a certain method of storytelling or execution I can’t argue with your opinion, but I just personally tend to enjoy stories that aren’t as straightforward (ex: time jumps, flashbacks) or require some figuring out.

The quarry was alright but it needed more development time i think. And imo bad characters like Dylan and Jacob drag the game down a bit. Until Dawn is still the gold standard for this company. They need to get Larry Fessenden to write characters/story for their other games.

  • My list from worst to best: 6. The Quarry: extremely unlikeable characters, dogshit dialogue, dreadful pacing, monsters that looked like a rehash from Wendigos, an embarrassing soundtrack and somehow manages to have an ending worse than Little Hope. Literal garbage. 5. Little Hope: a game mostly squandered by its ending and even outside of that it has abysmal pacing issues and just very boring characters. Overall has the least amount of variation as well. Shared story feels tacked on. 4. House of Ashes: easily the best main cast of character from the DPA as a whole and pacing is decent. I feel it needed more build up toward the twist or a completely different twist cause it was to goofy for my liking, still genuinely good unlike the previous two. Shared story is pretty fun. 3. The Devil in Me: quite literally the reverse HoA problems, easily the best story in the DPA slightly bugged down by it’s less than stellar cast (Charlie is the goat, the rest were lackluster). Haven’t played Shared Story yet due to how broken it is lol. 2. Man of Medan: best amount of variation, best Shared Story, amazing soundtrack and 0 to no plot armor. A really good introduction to the Anthology to me. Only main problem is the hit or miss dialogue and how predictable the twist really is. 1. Until Dawn: A game I quite frankly don’t think SM will ever beat. Outside of some few plot holes, I have very little problems overall with this game. Some of the other games have more variety in choices (maybe except Little Hope) but this game is just a perfectly cheesy fun throwback to old horror movies.

  • My list (ranking it story wise, to keep it simple): Worst: Little Hope - concept is cool, atmosphere is great, but characters are not only bland, but annoying to watch. Nothing special about the story besides witch trial sections Slightly better: House of Ashes - characters were insanely bland, tho Salim was cool, but the story is mostly just copy paste shooting sequences with unintimidating monsters Alright: Man Of Medan - characters dynamics were interesting, even if the characters don't have too much depth. Story has a lot of creative ideas, and it branches a ton, but the short length and abrupt ending really drag the game down Pretty good: The Devil In Me - characters have a ton of influence on each other, they're also well developed, with well defined personality traits that make them likeable. Story has a lot of interesting moments, tho kinda cliched. The game falls apart in the last 2 hours, it almost forgets it has a story. It just makes you walk as a character for 30 minutes, and pastes a du'met chase scene, and repeats that formula Very good: Until Dawn, most interesting ideas and story in any of the games, but the story barely branches, and characters, while likeable, aren't really memorable Great: The Quarry, best characters, and while the scenarios aren't as cool as Until Dawn, it's still way more fun to watch, although the anti climactic ending and character irrelevance weigh it down

For me, the setpieces and creatures and levels in house of ashes are what saved the game even if the characters are boring (With the exception of salim). • My rankings: 1. Until Dawn 2&3. The Quarry & House of Ashes 4. The Devil In Me 5. Man of Medan 6. Little Hope Until Dawn - For a debut for Supermassive, Until Dawn was appallingly good. The cast was believable, the double twist was wild and the design of the monster was accurate to folklore while also being its own thing. Each turn was entertaining and shocking. If I had to stare down some negatives, I would say the pacing is a little slow and much of the game is just walking through the woods scared. The Quarry - I might be a little biased, as I purchased it last year then just now got around to beating it but the story had me deeply invested and intrigued by the premise. The tension was always present and every choice you made felt like it had weight to it. The cast was very good and the premise was very reminiscent of Until Dawn. The reason it isn't above Until Dawn for me is due to the poorly crafted ending and lack of climax at the end. House of Ashes - I struggle to place one over the other, but The Quarry and House of Ashes are perfectly in line for me. House of Ashes was the first game for me that took a full step into a unique setting, the past Dark Pictures games were in usual or relatively normal settings while House of Ashes stepped into a war-torn Iraq and kept you on your toes the entire time. One of the things I really enjoyed was the bond that forms between the Marines and Salim in addition to the amount of action towards the end, I loved it. The Devil In Me - I love the way that Devil In Me makes you feel locked in. The game takes place almost entirely inside and it feels claustrophobic, like the killer could appear around any corner. Other than that I feel the pacing is quite slow, many of the sequences of the game take place in nearly identical rooms. Man Of Medan - The game that started it all, Man of Medan has a fun cast to work with plus an interesting setting in the middle of the ocean with an interesting twist. Unfortunately, when you decipher the twist, the game becomes much less threatening and scary. Little Hope - The setting of Little Hope is interesting and explores a unique part of history. The cast is alright and the monster design is interesting, but the ending/twist makes much of the choices you made feel inadequate and pointless. On top of that, the hidden system of having to unlock the secret trait of each character to ensure they survive was poorly implemented and explained.

  • my ranking (pretty long comment so bear with me): ALSO SPOILER WARNING 5. man of medan & little hope - i don't hate either of these games but i can see why they received a negative response. the most tense part of man of medan was pretty early (conrad trying to escape on the boat), and the fact that all the supernatural stuff they saw was an illusion felt quite underwhelming. with little hope, i appreciate the exploration of grief and the ending is honestly really sad but this game also just wasn't what people expected, and i don't like how unclear they were about how much personality traits mattered. i like how they delved into the salem witch trials, though given the ending it feels a bit pointless now. the only character i felt really attached to was andrew / anthony, although angela had some funny lines. 4. the quarry - it's a nice game overall, and i really like dylan and laura as characters. the graphics are really impressive and the scene with the crane in the junkyard is honestly my fave, it's really cool. the cast did a really good job as well, although i have to say some of the dialogue they were given was pretty cringey lol (not all of it tho, there were some funny moments too). the main thing that let this game down for me is the ending. it felt so abrupt and characters were separated and there wasn't a final boss battle or anything. dylan and ryan had a cool dynamic but they were just separated and never reunited again so their relationship felt unfinished to me. jacob was also a character i was expecting to have some sort of character arc / development (kind of expected him to be like the mike or jason of the game) but he kind of just stayed the same which was a bit disappointing. 3. the devil in me - some parts of this game were goofy and there were a lot of bugs, but i still think it's a good installment for tdpa. having a human killer creates an opportunity for some of the coolest deaths and scariest moments: characters aren't just mauled to death in seconds but rather have to anticipate a slow, agonising death whilst begging for their lives. i also like all the new game functions they added (like characters having their own inventories, jumping, climbing, etc). some really nice acting as well, for kate and charlie in particular. 2. house of ashes - i know this game had a mixed response but i honestly love it. it has some of the best action sequences from supermassive and imo the ending is their best yet (character arcs are complete, all lore is explained, all characters are reunited if alive and it has the right amount of tension to feel satisfying, plus an interrogation scene at the end). some people say the characters were a weakness of the game and tbh i can see why they would think that for eric, rachel, and nick but honestly i think jason and salim are some of the coolest characters from supermassive. salim is all around great and a character you really want to save and jason, although annoying at first, has some great development and some layers to him as well. 1. until dawn - still iconic, the story is campy but still really well executed. some great one-liners (i.e. "understand the palm of my hand b*tch") and although some characters are walking stereotypes there are some interesting / complex ones (josh). some great tense moments and the "don't move" sequence works really well because it means the player has to actually mimic the character.

Like the actors, writers, and VFX artist involved were trying to make you believe that you're watching actual people in a horror movie. • Night Trap would be a great remake for Supermassive ;) I enjoyed this video. I think my list would look like this: 7. The Devil in Me. The glitches and bugs really hampered my experience, and it's unusual for Supermassive to release something so unpolished. Nice to have a human villain instead of monsters, but Holmes is boring since he doesn't talk anyway, so it was basically the same difference. Did not like any of the characters at all, so I didn't care who died. 6. Little Hope. A little dull for me. The opening chapter in the house showed a lot of promise. I wish the game had stuck with that. Cause what it does with the characters and the timelines for the rest of it, I found to be very convoluted. Then there's that ending, which is a massive copout. Huge pet peeve of mine. Only positive is I liked the witch trial inspirations. 5. Hidden Agenda. A little known PS4 game some might have missed, but it was the first new followup Supermassive did after Until Dawn. It's a thriller in the same gameplay style as that and The Dark Pictures... but you only play as 2 characters (a detective and a D.A.) dealing with a serial killer known as The Trapper. It's very much in the mold of the movie Se7en. Its ok. 4. Man of Medan. Starts slow, (real slow) but it picks up in the second half. I really got into it once they finally got to the ship. Game's exactly in the middle because it's very 'middle-of-the-pack' for me. The atmosphere works, and I liked at least 2 out of the 4 cast members, so this gave me people to care about. But again, it has some ending problems. 3. The Quarry. It's just nice to have a well-produced 'big' game from these guys again. Most of the camp counselors annoyed me, but they did feel like real people, and in any case the story is fantastic. I only wish the monsters weren't so similar to Until Dawn's. I also wish there was more actual gameplay because this one most feels like just watching a movie. 2. House of Ashes. The evolved choices really make this a step above what had come before up this point. As did the cast. If it wasn't clear, these appeal to me most depending on how much I like the characters. HoA, which actually provides an arc for two people on opposite sides of a conflict, easily has the best character work of any of these games. 1. Until Dawn. Still their best. Most appealing for its cast, and I still think that's what all these games since The Quarry have been missing: Dumb horny teens are the most fun! Relatively speaking, I was already used to Telltale and Quantic Dream choice-based games by now, but the totems, investigative pieces, and "Butterfly Effect" system found here were all nice, novel touches.

  • My personal ranking: 1. Until Dawn. I love everything about it. The monsters, the story, the characters. All great. 2. Little hope. I think this game was great actually. I loved figuring out what all of the monsters were and the twist was my favorite part. It was actually scary for me and I love the atmosphere. 3. Man of Medan. Again the twist was so great! It was heavily alluded to in the beginning, but I don't think that took away from it at all. It was really cool to play the shared story mode and to not really know what was going on with the other stories. 4. The quarry. I honestly didn't care a whole lot about this game while I was playing it. I thought the monsters were like they were trying to use the wendigos from until dawn again, but slightly different and I wish it was a little different. It was okay. I wouldn't play it again. 5. House of Ashes. I went into this game expecting it to be similar to the first 2 games with a cool twist at the end with a deeper meaning, but it just ended up being weird alien vampire creatures. I feel like if I had different expectations going in, I would've liked it more, but because they set this precedent, I was disappointed. I did like the atmosphere and it was a cool story, but I didn't like it that much. 6. The Devil In Me. I didn't know what to expect, but I thought the story was cool. I am very interested in the H. H. Holmes case, so I was excited. The thing that really ruined it for me was the fact that I got 2 characters killed because there was no indicators or any way to know how to save them. Like in the suffocation room with Kate and Erin. You had to just guess on which person you got killed. How was I supposed to know that Kate's room wasn't sealed all the way?! That doesn't make sense. And the H. H. Holmes dude being in places that are impossible for him to have gotten to? Weird. The end wasn't bad though.

I have Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and Detroit and have no desire to play any of them to platinum those. I just dug Until Dawn so much more, and am curious to try Dark Picture games. I didn't know what they were, I think I got one on PSN+ and never played it not knowing what it was.

  • Here's how I'd rank them (warning, essay incoming): 1. House of Ashes - Yes, for me, this even beats Until Dawn. Main reasons being that not only do I prefer sci-fi horror in general as well as the co-op experiences of The Dark Pictures games, but I also find the characters to mostly all be quite likable, distinguishable, and competent (especially Salim - the best character in all the Supermassive games), instead of all just being annoying rich kids. I actually cared about their survival and found the branching possibilities extremely complex, yet worth taking the time to replay 2-3 more times to figure out how to get everyone out alive. Likewise, I think it has the best final chapters of any Supermassive game, with ever-rising tension and desperation up to the very last showdown that lets all the characters have a moment in the spotlight. There's pretty much nothing that the game really gets wrong outside of being shorter than Until Dawn or The Quarry (and priced lower accordingly). 2. Until Dawn - The original, and still one of the best. However, I actually put House of Ashes just above it largely due to the aforementioned character likability issue, as Until Dawn actually has among the doucheyist of all their casts. I get that this is largely intentional, but it still makes me less invested when I can barely care if they make it or not. It is also one of the least branching of any of the games on this list. That said, the scares, the mystery, and everything else are still among the most memorable of any horror game I've played. 3. The Quarry - The Quarry is like Until Dawn but more refined, with better characters, better acting, dialog, branches, and music. However, I find it a little less memorable and the ending fell a bit flat for me, feeling anticlimactic and like it just ended without much fanfare. I also expected a bit more from it considering the release price point and hype, given how many years had passed since Until Dawn. For these reasons, I just barely give the edge to Until Dawn. 4. The Devil in Me - Okay, you caught me, this is the one I haven't played yet. However, based on everything I've seen about it, this is my best estimate for where it'll probably fall for me once I do. Obviously, this is subject to change, it's just a guess. If it moves, the most likely scenario is that it just manages to overtake The Quarry. 5. Man of Medan - While I too put this low on my list, I feel Man of Medan does get treated a little worse than it deserves. and I think part of its problem is actually that it branches a lot - more than just about any other game on this list actually, if you can believe it - but it does it in a way that most players never even realize how much it branches because the effects of your choices are never very clear. This is one of the few here that in fact has several entire chapters most players will never even see depending on your choices, with nothing indicating just how much you missed. In my first playthrough, several characters died rather early and so I missed out on many of the scenes and scares and arrived at the ending feeling that not much really happened, but on replay I managed to keep these characters alive and found so many more spooky moments and levels I didn't even know were there. It was also highly ambitious and arguably makes the most innovative use of the co-op mechanics. The setting is a tad on the dull side and the characters are pretty forgettable, however, and even with the best path taken through the game it's still one of the shortest. 6. Little Hope - I think this is easily the worst of the list, and yes, it's mostly because the ending completely destroys any replayability. Doing my best not to spoil it, but the ending itself barely changes no matter what and it's revealed that essentially none of the characters really matter - why invest the time to play again and try to get them all to survive if... well, you know, the spoiler thing. Add on top of that, the characters are all super thin anyway, and while the witch trials theme and mystery was cool at first, it, again, just didn't even matter. At least Man of Medan has real consequences, branches, and reason to care and try again. Even without the ending, it would be merely "fine" and not one of the better experiences.

  • imo: 1. until dawn. a literal video game classic at this point. 2. the quarry. imo, the characters in the quarry are the best in any supermassive game. most of them feel very fleshed out and like real people. it's like they took the characters from UD (which are still great, dont get me wrong) but expanded their personalities so they weren't just horror stereotypes. 3. house of ashes. the best game in the DPA and quite easily. the premise is the most interesting to me, Jason has the best character development out of ANY supermassive game and they actually pulled off a twist that didn't end up ruining the game lmao. 4. little hope. maybe this is unpopular, but I love little hope. Angela is hilarious and it had the best atmosphere out of any DPA game for me. the group stumbling around the town in the quiet, eerie night was just awesome. sucks that the game was all a hallucination tho. 5. the devil in me. I didn't HATE this game, but there were things I didn't like about it. du'met as a villain was kinda weird because unless youre actively searching for clues about him, you can go through the entire game not knowing shit about him. also, if he isnt supernatural, then idk what the hell he is because he has to be teleporting. 6. man of medan. I hated this one

  • Medan is highly underrated to me. Fun characters (especially Conrad if he makes it to the ship) and quite a large variety of outcomes. Hope was easily my least favorite. Didn’t care much for the setting beyond the cool fog gimmick, and felt like choices ultimately didn’t matter much. Ashes was pretty great thanks in large part to Jason and the man, myth and legend that is Salim. Devil in Me I think I was disappointed in overall (was expecting much more of a Saw vibe and I only recall one or two traps the whole game) - but it was still fun, and I’ll play it again (liked the characters more than I expected to). Quarry was pretty good, other than the weird exploding werewolves, and Until Dawn is yes, probably still the best. Both games more fun than the Dark Pictures because they’re much bigger / larger casts to work with. But I still enjoy Dark Pictures games for their annual release and unique horror experiences, especially doing movie night mode with the same group of friends every year.

Untill dawn 2.House of ashes 3.The quarry 4.Little hope 5.The devil in me 6.Man of medan house of ashes overall gave a really solid story and by the end I got really attached to some of the characters, meanwhile in the quarry I don't really think it was a ballanced love and felt really slow at times - and the 'monsters' in the quarry felt lackluster and so did my choices sometimes little hope scores higher than tdim and mom because the ending was probably the biggest plot twist in all of the games together, but however I have to say that it felt kind of stupid how you had to do the heroic thing but it made the ending even sweeter so it's kinda like a take your pick with this one

  • they need to make more games like this, ya i realize there not everyone's cup of tea, but i don't think most people wouldn't want to play them though. for one you need games like these to exist, because once in awhile sometimes you just wanna relax to a deep and complex story where the gameplay is not the main focus. those type of games are always gonna be there, playing online with our friends is something we do, but once in awhile we get bored of competitive games. so something like this, you can just relax and take in the story. that said i have a few switched around, i agree with you about Until Dawn, but i don't think anybody would dispute that. but out of the 5, it goes like this for me, from my favorite to my least favorite. 1, The Devil In Me 2, Little Hope 3, The Quarry 4, Man of Medan 5, House of Ashes i like them all, but i disagree with one part about Man of Medan, i think it has a creepier setting, the problem is what you hit on. it's the games pacing, and i think it doesn't help that the characters besides maybe one or two weren't likeable. but in fairness when it comes to horror, it's not about having likeable characters, because Until Dawn's characters most were pretty likeable, sure you had a few girls that acted stuck up, but i think what was missing from Man of Medan, the characters didn't feel that interesting. everyone had a bit of an attitude, and the main white guy rarely ever took anything serious until those pirates snuck aboard there boat at night. the couple i think were the two most unlikeable, the guy was always mean to his younger brother, and his girlfriend didn't come across as if there even together. i liked Fliss from the start, i think she was the strongest character, and it showed especially later. the other problem with Man of Medan is the length, and the ending was a bit confusing, but they did get saved in the end depending on who survived. Little Hope definitely is where they improved and it only got better from there, now the only reason House of Ashes is my least favorite is because it don't feel like a horror game at all, but it does have an interesting story. i just didn't get into the whole military aspect, but ill give them credit for trying something different in the series. but while the stories in this series are getting better, they are getting less creepy. The Devil in Me was a nice return, but since Little Hope not even the Quarry was that creepy.

  • I liked The Quarry the most because I feel like it has the most different outcomes that could happen. The game can even end in chapter 9 instead of 10, I made a video on it on my channel. I’m The Quarry, the are a lot of choices in the game that will matter in the end. For example, picking up that toy in chapter 1 can help save Kate in chapter 10. If you get to that point cause she can survive without depending on what happens earlier. I feel like in Until Dawn there’s only one ending when the games ends in the lodge everytime. It would depend on what characters are there in the end but it will always be Sam and Mike cause they can only die in chapter 10. I do like Until Dawn the second most.

  • My ranking: 1. until dawn: blend of good but still stereotypical character teens surrounded by a good story and a great threat that is the wendigo. Ps if I spelled wendigo wrong I’m sorry 2. Man of Medan: I liked the characters and the story was smaller and shorter which made it more bite sized than until dawn but the threat of the story should have just been literal ghosts instead of chemicals 3. The quarry: werewolves are always awesome and I liked the setup, however the ending sucked and key character relationships weren’t explored enough like with the nick character. 4. House of ashes: Vampires + aliens= awesome. I hate putting it this low. The characters are great except for the redhead chick. My only complaint is that it felt kinda slow in some places and the lore also was kinda funky. This one could switch with the quarry or man of Medan any time so yeah it’s pretty good 5. Little hope: the twist was cool but it kinda took away from all this lore it built up and it flipped all of it upside down, however I did like the twist, it’s just I don’t think the twist was worth it for the rest of the game I haven’t played the devil in me yet but it looks kinda dog shit so I don’t know if I even want to play it

  • My Ranking: Until Dawn: Until Dawn has many problems, plot holes, and issues but I hold this game near and dear to my heart as a horror fan and as flawed as it is I can't help but put it in 1. House of Ashes: Good branching, good characters for the most part, an interesting plot. All around best of the games so far. It's also imo the game that's the most fun to replay because as long as it is once you get to the good stuff it is good. The Devil In Me: Best cast so far. I loved everyone except Mark due to his lacking performance. The traps and new mechanics could have been better executed, since the traps are for the most part 50/50 choices or in the new mechanics case, just padding and I hope they improve it. The branching is sadly very weak. Erins inhaler does literally nothing past the Blackroom with Du'Met. Even on the boat Erin isn't in more danger of any sort she still has the same strength as she would have with a inhaler puff. However, the pacing, music, some of the character interactions and relationships, along with some of the best kills in the series yet puts this right behind House of Ashes. Man Of Medan: Easily the most over hated game imo. This game has easily the most replayability, and the best branching by far. Some people complain about the short story yet that is the point. This game is the one you should replay the most to get the many different variations or endings. As for characters I will say it is pretty weak. Fliss is a very boring odd one out who I just couldn't connect to. Alex is also insufferable due to the acting and some of the writing, like him cracking jokes after his fiancé or brother just died. Brad is really enjoyable but fairly flat and just the nerd stereotype. Julia and Conrad are easily the highlights though. If you have not already search up the scene where Conrad is consoling Julia it is amazing and almost shot Conrad up into S for a moment. Conrad and Julia though actually felt like they had personality semi-decent performances. The twist people seem to complain about the most but I think its great. Sure, its predictable as hell, but I find the game mechanic of potentially killing your own characters on the spot a really interesting mechanic and great for story choices. I also like how there seems to be a theme of how their greatest enemy is themselves. The Quarry: Wow was this game turbo-mid. All the characters are either boring copy pastes of Until Dawn characters but worse or they just leave the story until the ending credits. There are just mountains of plot holes in this game and don't get me started on how bad the status cutscene is. Literally a slideshow? Really? Its hilarious how bad the game is trying to be Until Dawn instead of its own thing. Branching is alright but sometimes the ending just straight up lies like how killing Caleb doesn't lift the curse. Little Flop: Easily the worst game. Half the game is walking in and out of buildings, John and Angela are the only good characters and Angela is not here for a good majority of it, and the branching is hilariously bad. Half the branching feels like it includes failing QTES or the gun. Then we have the infamous life or death dialogue choices. Why do these exist. For some reason even though the family was heavily dysfunctional in the prologue sometimes the life choice is to be "Heroic" and not ask for help? Which even if that wasn't the case having your characters life depend on one choice is so stupid and arbitrary. Oh but then there's the twist.... You are telling me this man is so mentally unstable he imagines 2 extra timelines worth of people along with its own mini narrative where they get chased by their doubles dead monsters. This is also including the whole 50 secrets that he'd have to imagine to make this work. Like, I'm sorry, one bus crash doesn't send you into this insanity. And even if the branching is already bad its even worse because now we know there's even fewer choices that matter in the end because its mostly up to a few factors and that's it.
