Do your shadows look flat? Use this Simple Loose Watercolour Sketching Technique
Shadows in watercolours can be so hard, but with simple changes we can suddenly elevate our shadows to something else.
In this simple watercolour shadow technique video we'll be sketching a beautiful barn in the Cotswolds - but our focus will be on making the shadows come to life.
With this simple watercolor technique your shadows will no longer look flat or dull - instead, they'll really come to life, pop out, and you'll be so much happier even with quick and simple watercolour and ink sketches.
So, no longer fear the shadows or the flat and dull shadows. Just use this simple watercolour shadow technique and have some fun sketching loose!

🙏
Just enjoy watching you work so much, those tips are fantastic……you really get the process and are relaxed and convey that! Cheers from Minnesota Toby
Thank you :) You always post lovely comments hehe :)
I like using a drop of clear water into the shadows to infuse a bit of light...done at the right time it will not create a huge bloom, but a subtle way of breaking up a boring shadow. Like your videos and work very much, thanks.
This sounds like a great idea
Such a good teacher…
Thank you
really great content. :-)
Thank you kindly!
How easy to perk it up! I’ll try.Thank!
Have fun
Well Sir, another wonderful video and you always make it look so easy 🎉 Thanks Toby for all your tips and sharing to help us amiture artists 😊
Thankyou ☺️
This is a great tip! And you’re right-I just went back to a couple trash bin sketches I’d done recently (where they ended up looking boring, but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why) and scattered a touch of blue around. INSTANT pop! Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!

Hiya Toby! Love your loose style. In this scetch the building looks small, but it is big in the pic. Howbout adding a little person in front of it? 😊
Hehe great idea!
You should do comic books. Nice sketchy ideas.
ahhh I'd love to, not sure I have the ideas for it though :D
Two tips for the price of one!
🥰🥰
Do you have a video on the colours you use and mixing?
kzhead.info/sun/ks2PgbaQkayMZ3A/bejne.html there you go :)
I was taught to use a bit of the complementary colour in the shadows... which is kinda what you did here
Oo that’s a very interesting tip in itself. I’ll bear that in mind in future👍🏼thank you
Yes it is really blue Vs quin sienna , good point
Tony what colours make moonglow, I don't have it
From memory... aliziron crimson, ultramarine blue and... viridian?
What paper are you using?
www.saa.co.uk/shop/surfaces/featured-ranges/saa-watercolour-practice-paper/
First!
😮need captions as i have great difficulty hearing!
There are subtitles - you need to click the cog in the corner.
What colour was your initial shadow, moonglow?
Yes!
damn lol missed by 3 mins
Moonglow is greatly overrated
It does certainly have a cult like following 😂 and a lot of people who hate it. I would argue that art is a bit too intrinsically personal to be able to say anything is overrated, as if someone personally loves it then I wouldn't want to take that from them. I've, personally, not found anything yet which can produce the same effects and joy for me - though very happy to take suggestions! Just one silly man's perspective of course 😁😁😁 neither right nor wrong just thoughts 💭
Thanks!
Very very generous of you, thanks you 💗
Thanks!
Hugely appreciated James - notes your other questions too, I'll send you a link to the paper I use later today/tomorrow when I'm back at my computer. From memory it's called SAA Watercolour practice paper... Or something along those lines
