    • +John Smith Funny, maybe it sounds like this to people which do not speak german. I think he has the typical barking wau-wau accent of the styrian people, with some drops of american accent here and there. Styria is a region in south east Austria, where people speak a colorful variation of south Bavarian dialect. Many Austrians (not the Styrians) always made fun about his anglo-styrian barking language implying that he is big, stupid and ignorant. He never gave a damn about clean language, and he did right.

    • Loyalist GCMT I know plenty of Austrians that speak Hochdeutsch.

      @Osvath97@Osvath977 жыл бұрын
    • Osvath97 Why do I even bother? Whatever. Austria is part of the German dialect continuum. The dialect borders are different to the national ones. People in Bavaria speak very similar to many people in Austria whereas Germans from the North Sea hardly have anything in common with the Bavarians. That's because Bavaria and Austria share the same dialect family (Bairisch). That has nothing to do with Standard German which is an artificial lingua franca within the dialect continuum. It was created by Austria, Bavaria and Upper Saxony and is heavily based on Upper Saxonian dialect (with some Bairisch to the mix). This Standard language was then learnt by the North Germans who had spoken a different language (Low German) before. Since then, they have spoken High German, a term which was soon identified with Standard German (however originally, it refers to the German language spoken in the Alps, in contrary to the German language spoken in the plains). Nowadays, each German speaking country has its own standard variety of the German language. Federal Standard German and Austrian Standard German don't differ in written form (only very, very tiny differencies) but sound a little bit different to each other when spoken. Most Austrians (the further east you go the more it is used in everyday life as well) speak that Standard lingua franca. An Austrian accent however, does not exist.

      @deponensvogel7261@deponensvogel72617 жыл бұрын
    • @103843691885025256951 I simply said that Arnold Schwarzenegger has a strong dialect, which he has. Then you said something which quite frankly was not comprehendable. Then someone tells me that Arnold Schwarzenegger is Austrian, therefore he has a strong dialect. I answer him that that is not neccesarily so, as I know of plenty of Austrians who speak Hochdeutsch. Then you write this long comment which I am quite frankly not sure what it is about. You explain the history behind different varietes of German and the development of Hochdeutsch, which is all well and good. But for some weird reason you seem frustrated at the start of the comment. Why I do not understand! And then your last sentence is about how an Austrian accent does not exist. What exactly you mean by this is unclear, as accent is specifically varieties in phonology in different dialects, sociolects, et cetera. The reason why I used accent instead of dialect when specifically referring to the way he speaks English is because only his phonology is apparent when speaking English, therefore only the accent of his dialect is noticed in English. I never said anything about an Austrian accent, I said that Arnold Schwarzenegger has an iconic accent when speaking English, which he does.

      @Osvath97@Osvath977 жыл бұрын
  • Fun fact: Arnold wasn't allowed to do the German voice dub for the Terminator movie BECAUSE if his voice. The director, I believe, thought that it would be silly if a killer cyborg from the future would have a hillbilly voice.

    @epicwolf6486@epicwolf64864 жыл бұрын
    • Well, it's silly in English too because of his very strong foreign accent, but they cast him and he was great at the role. Not allowing him to do it in German was not a fair move.

      @gnuling296@gnuling2964 жыл бұрын
    • @@gnuling296 I get it, but in German, he apparently sounds like a hillbilly. Whatever. Personally, I would think it'd be silly to have a killing machine, unstoppable, and then, have them say, in a VERY thick southern accent, "I need your clothes!"

      @epicwolf6486@epicwolf64864 жыл бұрын
    • @@epicwolf6486 Aaaaactually, as we learned, terminators are *infiltration units*. Kyle Reese: "The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy. But these are new, they look human. Sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot." So, having an accent would just be another layer of decpetion. Also, he was able to imitate other people's voices and language, so why shouldn't he not speak with accent then?

      @Puschit1@Puschit14 жыл бұрын
    • @@Puschit1 well, I guess the Germans do it differently. Because you'd need a voice actor for Sarah, one for Kyle, etc. My guess is that they didn't want Arnold to do the dub because he'd probably be the only one with that accent. And yeah, it is infiltration. In areas where people talk like that. But, I guess that we Americans don't question someone from Texas with their accent.

      @epicwolf6486@epicwolf64864 жыл бұрын
    • @@epicwolf6486 But where is the difference if it's a VERY thick southern accent or a VERY thick foreign accent? You may have some prejudices but you can't argue that the former is a problem if the latter isn't. Americans have just gotten used to Arnold starring in roles like this and that's why they accepted it.

    • +GameleErik100 - I'm guessing you don't speak multiple languages nor do you hang out with people who speak multiple languages because practically every multi-lingual speaker combines languages in their rhetoric.

    • I speak 3 languages and yeah, sometimes I can't find the word in my native language, so I'll say it in English or French, just because I either forgot, can't recall it, it's on the tip of my tongue or I never knew the word because I never talked about that topic in my native language.

    • I can speak English and Spanish. When I use my mother tonge (Spanish) sometimes it s difficult to try to form phrases because in English is all more simple and direct. I use a lot of expression in English and words when I speaking to my family. However in English I don't use Spanish words at all. It just no practical.
