I've been backing trailers since I was 12. Bumper pulls, goose necks, and now I'm 26 and have had my CDL for 4 years. There are some days I just absolutely get my butt kicked even with plenty of room. It really is 100% about the set up. But to all new drivers, don't let that get you upset. Safe is better than fast 110% of the time.

I’m on my first week alone. I absolutely suck at backing. I even struggle w straight back now. I try and get to the truck stops early to I don’t have to park in a hard spot.

I’m a 27 year old woman ready to get my CDL Class A in a few weeks! I have both my parents that are CDL drivers. My mother on buses and my dad on a semi truck! Transitioning from backing pup trailers to a 53’ is a wild transition. I’m learning daily with my new job. I have to stay out of my own head. Vet drivers aren’t in their trucks pointing and laughing 😂. I remind myself that I’ve only had my license for a year and some months. Everyone was once a beginner.
I always watch other drivers back into spots. I'm not pointing and laughing, I'm watching and learning. If the one I'm watching is fucking up...I'm looking at what they did wrong and how I can avoid that in my own backs. If they are making that tight back look easy...I'm watching at what they're doing and trying to teach myself how to back like that. If they're about to hit something...I'm blasting that horn and jumping out to help them. You are always learning...the day you think you know it all is the day you fuck something up.
I feel your pain. I drove pups too for a year, pin to pin then transitioned to 53 ft trailer like you did. Not an easy transition. My boss told me get and look as much as you need, slow and steady there's no shame in that. Hang in there.
@@saruwatarikooji I love learning in this field, so I will continue to use that as my safety day. Don’t ever get too comfortable in the truck don’t ever become too comfortable no matter what you’re driving. I stay diligent. I’m almost 2 years in and I’m learning every day.
@@muninnseyes I have definitely gotten better even though there are days where the challenge still arise. Some days are one shot in Alley dock and there are other days where I have to pull up and back in three times or more.

I’m in school and testing in a few weeks. The offset has definitely kicked my butt 😅 The slowest I go the better outcome I get. Everything is backwards & that takes some time for adjustment. This video is well explained with clear visuals. Thank you for that 🙏🏻
Guys if your still learning your backing skills take into account that every truck is different based on the length of the wheel base, length of the hood, and the turning radius. A good rule of thumb to follow is to straighten out your truck and trailer as even as possible along the row of trucks where you want to park, keep about a 4 feet to 5 feet distance away from the trucks on said row, then align your fifth wheel right smack in the center of the hole you want to park in, then cut a hard right and slowly pull forward, the way you know when to cut it back to the left is when you start to lose sight of the hole in your mirror. Once you start to straighten out you pull forward just enough so the end of your trailer is just 1 or 2 spots away from the hole so you don't over shoot the setup and you have enough room to mauver the back of your trailer into the hole, Your Welcome.

You always want to make the back is easy as you can for yourself and back at your own pace don't let impatient drivers make you overthink or rush cuz you'll make mistakes

Lots of years on the other side of the table as a city dispatcher/broker and this is the part of the job that I respect the most from you drivers. The sheer variety of completely ate-up docks setups out there is staggering. I show all my newbie carrier managers videos like this. The more they can understand what drivers have to deal with every day, the more they can help them get in/out of locations as smoothly as possible. Now...that doesn't do anything to ensure the driver has the right BOL and is going to GA like he's supposed to instead of loaded with freight going to CA, but hey...that's another video :)

We were never taught to back up into any spots. We did straight back, offsets and parrellel . That’s it. Have not had to parallel anything yet in my first 3 weeks

Very informative video 🫡 I’ve been driving local for 3 months and still struggle with backing from time to time. Specifically the idea of “chasing the trailer”. I either find the bulkhead passenger side is trailing to far over or I’m not lined up at the dock - so I need to pull up and adjust. I find almost always that forward space is limited so 90 degree backing is a must.

The part of this video I was hoping/waiting to see was a pivot point to which we should start straightening the trailer on 90 degree angle backing (similar to the way you explained the 45 degree angle with the tires being aligned with the lines/cones on the CDL test).
I was always told nobody will remeber a perfect backing and nobody will forget you htting something. Im just 5 months in and i do it 4 days a week and i still have those days. One thing i see allot is drivers alley docking when they have a whole yard they can use. Please use your space and never be afraid or intimidated if you need to reset.

That's a nice video! And warehouses have changed a lot since I started 28 years ago. But in the real world. There will be times that you don't have the room to get the truck and trailer straight. I have learned how to pull the rear corner of the trailer just short of the truck to my right. Jack the steering wheel hard right and start pushing the trailer backwards. The only time that you can get the truck and trailer straight is when you're almost completely backed up.

Most excellent video!👍👍👍👍💯/💯 Especially those last words 7:03 (phew!) I swear, I did school, then test passed, then training on the job and watched many good drivers at work and went back to school and got some good tips but overall, the best training has been on KZhead with videos like this - KZhead Training Academy - and when I apply what I learned, be it the offset law or anything, it works!! Then everything clicks into place. It's true, it ain't easy but with this training it does start to work.

I remember when I did the driving test for truck with heavy trailer. I was driving a 2008 14 speed rigid chassis Volvo FH440 and I had a 3-axle trailer (one in the front with a drawbar connected to the axle and 2 axles in the rear). I was gonna reverse into a gate but I couldn't get the setup right and I couldn't go close enough to the gate because there was a delivery truck on the far side of the gate. I had to drive out on the road again to get my trailer in the right position and the front axle on the trailer turned the right way. First try and I managed to get the trailer perfectly between the lines. I was about 5 meters from the gate and I told the instructor that I was gonna drive forwards a few meters to get the front axle straight as well. He just said with an almost proud voice: "Nah, we can go back to end the test. I can see that you know what you're doing." Even if my teachers said that I didn't need more practice, because they saw that I could do it with relatively few retakes, but the reason why I wanted more practice was to work on my confidence that I can actually do it. This was awesome mate, thank you! I’m brand new, and I go from looking out the window to my mirrors and that throws me off haha
I've got over 3 millions driving Semi's, get use to using your mirrors, in winter you'll have to, when backing the first thing to do is put your 4 ways on, shut off all your noise making things in the truck like radios, beepers, computers, kick anyone else out of the truck, then crack (in winter you won't roll the windows down, learn to love your mirrors) the windows to hear if someone is yelling at you, never back up until you know there is nothing behind you, always check when opening your doors, many times there are no lines on the pavement, or even pavement, then you line up with the dock, using all your mirrors to get parallel to the building, or trailer/trailers next to you..if there is any, watching out both mirrors to square your trailer to the dock. When you have spare time pratice, even blind side, it will come in handy.. good luck !!

That's incredibly thorough. Driving years, done some insane stuff, but being otr backing never got any easier lol. But I'll tell you what I'm an expert at fixing a bad back. 1 pull up doesn't bother me. Should have thrown in snaking it up with that great drone footage. Especially getting in those docks built for a uhauls. That would be a great next video, how to fix a back, snaking takes some skill. Sometimes docks require snaking no matter how good you are. Some days you can one shot it some days looks like a 3 year old backing up. It just happens.
I haven't backed a semi, but I drive buses and one time I had to back and did exactly what you said NOT to do. I was so focused on the driver side that I didn't even see the mail box until it was almost to late, luckily the mail box survived and I learned my lesson lol.
