After the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in the Andes mountains in 1972, Roberto Canessa, a 19-year-old medical student, faced a harrowing ordeal. Stranded at a height of 11,710 feet with limited supplies, Roberto and his rugby teammates who were with him, confronted the unthinkable decision - resorting to cannibalism to survive. Over 72 days, they battled extreme conditions, an avalanche, and embarked on a perilous trek for help. The story was depicted in the 1993 film “Alive” and now it’s told again in the Netflix film "Society of the Snow” which captures the survivors' agonising experience and the ethical dilemmas they faced during their fight for survival. Roberto joins GMB today to open up on his harrowing story and fight for survival and reflect on the tragedy 50 years on.

  • Everyone asks the survivors about eating their friends and family members. He must get sick of it, they all must - there is so much more to the story than that - there are far more interesting questions. Society of Snow is an incredible and sensitive film.

  • If I was killed in a plane crash - and my remains frozen - I would actually be kinda embarrassed if my surviving friends chose to die before they'd eat me. One a serious note this really is an epic tale of human's overcoming extraordinary odds to survive, doing whatever they had to do to survive, etc. I'm a practical person - the fact that they ate human flesh to survive, to me, wasn't mind blowing. I'm just glad that some of them survived...and look at the wonderful contributions this man had made to society. These guys went through a lot and the eating of human flesh, for me, is hardly the biggest story in this thing. Everybody focuses on that aspect - it's about the miracle of their survival, generally.

  • They were very brave and remarkable young men who worked together to survive. I can't imagine, after everything they had already been through, surviving an avalanche and losing even more friends, and still having the courage that Nando and Roberto had to hike 10 days for help. It is a fascinating look at team work, strong will and desire to live.

  • Every interview focuses on the same subject matter, and it's asked in a way that makes them look and possibly feel horrible. Please stop. I'm vegan, and the fact they had to eat bodies didn't phase me, nor was it controversial at all. That's what a true survival / life or death situation looks like. A experience most of us are fortunate to never have to experience. This doesn't mean we try to normalize / understand it in any "ordinary context". None of us have the optics to comprehend it. We all live 15 mins from a grocery store with 300+ ingredients. They ate out of necessity / survival, not for sensory pleasure / gluttony -- like a certain former host of Good Morning Britain. I watched a bunch of interviews and they always bring this up like it's the most horrifying or barbaric thing. It's also not cannibalism, but necrophagy in the context of do or die. I watched the original movie when I was 6, and never forgot it because it had such an impact on me. The remake however is a masterpiece. Focus on the broader meaning, friendship, purpose, meaning, existentialism, is there a God, mortality.

  • I have all my admiration for Roberto for his wisdom at such an early age, even to these days. But these mediocre interviews focused on anthropophagy instead of more in- depth questions about such a horrific experience, which is really annoying. Don't you have more interesting questions to ask? And look at her judgmental look when Roberto kindly responds, it's so annoying. Moreover, knowing that any of us would have done the SAME in that situation, that's why it's a trivial matter! Come on! I'm from Santiago, Chile, I was 3 years old when it happened, and I grew up listening to the same question over and over again. But people, that was 50 years ago! Can't you evolve?

  • It seems like the interviewers really didn’t do their research on them, didn’t watch any interviews, didn’t read their book. In the press conference they gave, they explain that their deeds are comparable to Jesus giving his blood and flesh, and that these acts should not be interpreted in any other way out of context or misunderstood. That we must remember that those who died were incredible young boys, and their memory should be handled as such. 🙏🏻 I find that the interviewers completely lack tact and completely miss the point; they have no respect.
