    • When an object is being overlapped, do you make the objects line thicker entirely when it’s in front. or only on the place they visually make “t” lines , or overlap the object?

  • I am *so* glad you mentioned Jin Kim! I often find myself studying his work on Big Hero 6, and always loved how expressive his sketches are. I hope that someday his style will be represented in a 2D animated project, because I can't help but feel something is lost whenever his work gets put to CGI

  • Very helpful tips! The thicker lines seem to usually suggest shadow, thickness, depth and such, giving a sense of visual "weight". Your lines in particular are very pleasing and well balanced! I generally prefer thin lines in my artwork, but it does feel too uniform a lot of times. I'm trying to incorporate a wider range of line weight and thickness.

  • 00:00 🎨 Ben introduces himself as an artist who specializes in stylized drawing, painting, and sculpting. 00:14 🖊️ Ben will discuss line weight and Line work, providing practical tips and tricks for achieving more dynamic and interesting results. 00:28 🧙 Ben introduces the concept of a "whisper line," which adds depth to line work and aids in painting and rendering. 00:42 💡 Ben highlights the importance of seeking context and new perspectives when studying other artists' line work. 01:23 🎸 Adam Savage's analogy about gaining "new eyes" in the learning process is applied to art, emphasizing growth and evolving understanding. 02:19 🧐 Ben suggests actively analyzing artists' work to identify patterns, such as the placement of thicker and thinner lines. 02:49 🅣-lines, resembling T's, are introduced as a technique to convey depth and layering in artwork. 03:17 🧱 Line weight is used to create the illusion of three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional surface. 03:45 📚 Ben promotes his Gumroad tutorial, offering an in-depth walkthrough of his artistic process, including painting and rendering. 04:41 ➖ Different scenarios for employing thicker lines are discussed, including emphasizing outer lines for character definition. 05:11 ➰ Thicker lines are used strategically when objects overlap, aiding in visual separation and depth perception. 05:53 ☑️ Shadows are considered in line work to enhance the illusion of light and form, including the use of contextual thicker lines. 06:22 ↩️ Thicker lines are applied around corner lines, indicating areas where the viewer's perspective is limited. 06:49 🌬️ Whisper lines are introduced as subtle, descriptive lines that hint at three-dimensional form without overpowering darker lines. 07:17 📏 Whisper lines are especially effective in highlighting the meeting points of different planes in a subject, aiding in rendering and lighting decisions.
