You can tell he likes reliving it all and basking in his own criminal genius. He says in an interview on another channel that he knows he is a narcissist but is supposedly trying to improve.
Yeah, I couldn't get enough of the true crime audio books. They're abridged to an hour, and I found myself listening to one every other day. Made for a great month. I even got on YT Red to skip the commercials just for those stories.
This episode is so good it needs an award. Matt is so good at explaining his life and recollecting things in a nuanced way

From the clips- yep. Not full of bs. I dated a few finance managers at dealerships. Fraud happens damn near everyday. I had a buddy after high-school that used to print payroll checks in his basement. They used to cash 1000s of dollars a day. I guarantee less than 10% is bs but probably only bc he can't really remember some details

Originally just in books and articles but now through his podcast. If anything he spends a considerable amt of time and effort debunking a lot of the bullshit related to fraud and credit (ppl like bandman kevo for instance)

Hey Lex, love your show. I am a recently retired FBI agent with 22 years experience who has recruited and managed many cooperating witnesses during my career. I know the point of this particular episode was to gain a better understanding of human behavior, and I can see you struggling during this episode with the concept of human "loyalty" and "integrity" when it comes to relationships. So I wanted weigh-in to bring you a different perspective that you may not have considered. Disloyalty often does not happen in a vacuum, especially when you are talking about criminal behavior where someone puts themselves in a compromising position. Many times, such a person who appears to be acting disloyal, is actual doing so out of loyalty to another, i.e. their family. And when we are talking about family, often times the pull to cooperation is the one-two punch of loyalty + responsibility to those that depend on them at home. In other words, if a criminal puts loyalty to their co-conspirators first and as a result, becomes an absentee parent/spouse due to a lengthy prison sentence that could have been reduced or avoided by cooperating, isn't that simultaneously an act of disloyalty to their families and dependents? I am only pointing this out because if you are coming away from this discussion assessing that humans are inherently disloyal, I would caution you that you may be looking at this too one dimensionally. Don't get me wrong, many times people are disloyal just out of pure selfishness and lack of integrity, but often times its more complicated then that. I would assess that the vast majority of people I gained cooperation from did so out of loyalty to those that were more important to them. Just understand that sometimes being loyal to more than one person becomes a mutually exclusive circumstance in that an act of disloyalty to one is really an act of loyalty to another. Anyway, hope this helps.

Ive listened to probably thousands of hours of podcasts. 7 days a week, at least 8 hours a day, fixing surfboards and tuned into something. Just finished this one today and wow, hands down one of the best podcasts i've ever listened to. What a roller coaster of emotions and feelings, what a story, what a life. Unreal.

This is by far the best podcast I’ve ever listened to. Every second of it.
A six hour podcast, and at no point was I bored.
I haven’t been bored, but at no point have I forgotten what this guy did, how he hurt all of us, nor have I missed his classism and arrogance. I wouldn’t trust him to tie my shoes, and I believe he’s told his story in a light most favorable to himself. He expects more from people than he ever gave (packing up everything he owns to run-the lady and kids he lived with was a booty call. Y’all really listen to this dude. A worthwhile listen.

@@Srvelis82 You can tell the truth without being real. Notice Matt’s heavy reliance on telling facts, his internal strategizing, and third-party perspectives. There were very few moments where Matt to dived into his inner world. He may be unable to sit with difficult emotions on the matter. We got close when he cracked up talking about his mom visiting him, but then he quickly deflected back to storytelling.

Good thing he wasn't on Rogan. He would have never gotten to the creating synthetic people part. That's what makes Lex one of the best. He knows when to allow guests to just tell their story and then pepper them occasionally with great questions when necessary.

Incredible story and MAD props to the production crew who managed the equipment. 6 hours of runtime and no visible disruptions from batteries dying, cameras malfunctioning, SD cards filling up, etc. Wow!

And this guy isn't a slow-talker, either -- normally I run this type of thing at 1.25 speed so I can fit more amusement into my viewing time, but he's already packing it in here at a speed comparable to others who've been pitched-up...
I ain’t giving him a penny, lol, now I’m at 4:25 and still not seeing a redemption, have zero compassion at this point. I really feel like he’s a NYer (I’m a native Floridian), but if I don’t ever find out that’s fine, I’m not giving him views. His fraud contributed to the banking collapse which collapsed my “construction worker-not a real or legitimate person” business collapse. A man who was homeless at 17, a Marine, came home and started a million dollar business on nothing but knowledge, perseverance, and smarts. Even though he had never not completely paid off a loc, they closed them all. Devastating for small businesses.Collapsed it all as soon as we had kids, and he was diagnosed with cancer, thanks! There’s no such thing as a victimless crime.

Yeah, he did some scummy things and deserved to be locked up, but not even a tiny fraction of what Wall Street contributed to the housing collapse. Those guys were given a pass, many leaving with tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, while this guy sat in jail for doing far less.

Mathew Cox is a fantastic story teller! I will easily watch all 6 hours.
I think his full story was something like 20 hours compiled together in a single video (on his channel). After listening to that one a few months ago, I'm not surprised Lex did 6 with him.
He's also a grifter and a scammer still to this day and Lex having him on his show only further degrades any credibility he still has.

I never expected, when I first clicked on this video, to watch the whole 6 hours. One hour in I knew I was hooked and couldn’t not watch it. I sat through this whole podcast in one sitting and am really thankful to you lex, for having this amazing human being on your show, and grateful to you Matthew for telling your story, what a wild ride you have had. The humility with which you talk about yourself, your life and your mistakes is refreshing to say the least, you always tried to portray everyone in the best light possible and humbled yourself. I don’t know what exactly it is but your storytelling and the way you are able to keep one hooked is unmatched. I don’t think I have ever listened to anyone tell stories for this long and have been this invested after such a long time. Thank you!

Ive listened to Matt’s story a few times. I found him when my friend sent me a link to the konkrete episode like 4 years ago or whenever it was. And I’ve relistened to his story several times from his different appearances on different podcasts and from different stories on his own podcast. This was the best one. There were a few things I dont think he said before that were really touching. Especially the thing about his parents near the end. That broke me down a bit
I've heard Matt tell his story several times. Probably on every podcast that he's been on tbh. I still listen to it every time I see him. And I actually enjoy it even after knowing the whole thing. I listened to the whole thing, props to you Lex, for letting the man speak and not interrupted too much. You were perfect. Out of everything the thing that hit me the hardest was the fact that his mother came to visit him in jail every two weeks. I'm so glad he got to see her at the end. That is beautiful.
Matt's story is one of the most entertaining journeys I've heard.
It's always the fraudsters and fbi/cops on Lex's channel that are the best. Lex doesn't even need to do much work, these narcissists are entertaining and it's fun listening to them tell their stories.
Just finished watching the entire 6 hours.. wow, what a captivating and riveting listening experience! I had zero idea that many parts towards the end of Matt’s story would completely bring me to tears. A huge thank you to both Lex and Matt!

This has been one of the most consuming and amazing interviews you have had. I'm amazed at Matthew's transparency, his honesty and his recall. I wept uncontrollably as he described the love poured out toward him by his fellow inmates, starting with Frank, moving to Treon after moving into a halfway house , listening to his recollection of his conversation with his dad while he was in prison, and his last days with his mother before she passed. I share his longing for a relationship with his child, knowing I was much worse than he was in my younger life. Thank You Matthew and Lex. Matthew, you are brilliant.

I have been listening to podcasts for 10 years. I’ve heard all the great long form shows and this is the first one that had me on the edge of my seat for 6 hours straight, going through so many emotions, tears, audibly saying wow. Just incredible. Lex barely spoke. Matt is a machine
I've listened to Matt's book on audible and listened to his 6 hour story on his channel multiple times and yet I still take the time to relisten anytime he pops up. He's one of the greatest story tellers of our generation and his story is legendary.

The story about the mortgage resonates so much. I have worked for a large financial instituation and almost on a daily basis I saw something criminal and fraudulent and everyone was not only turning out a blind eye but openly reasuring everyone around that it's fine and no one is going to find out. I remember, one time someone brought a paper to my desk and asked me to sign it. I read it and said that if I would sign it I would commit a crime, and I calmly explained why. The person who brought the paper looked at me, shruged his shoulders and said - yeah, but all your colleages already signed it so what's the fuss, anyway no one is going to find out anyway. So I said - if no one is going to find then forge my signature and sign it for me. He did, and walked away.

Well that's not the reason Matt was wanted by the FBInif he woulda let through a few ppl that didn't make enough by a few thousand he woulda never been caught . And same goes for you if you woulda let that person through you wouldn't of been on the FBIs most wanted for letting a person get into a house . It was all the things he did together that made him get caught up. Maybe you should lighten up a bit and start thinking about these families that need homes and by you signing off on it could change these ppls lives. I guarantee if it wasn't a major thing that you signed off on youd be just fine.

@@krucial88 You have a heart like the people who changed all the lending standards at the time leading up to that housing fiasco. The standards were lowered so that more people would be able to buy homes... people who previously were being denied because they couldn't afford it. So many of these people were put into houses they couldn't afford and ended up losing everything. You wanna pat yourself on the back for being "nice", when you should really have a heart and be kind.

This is my favorite Lex Fridman podcast of all-time. I’ve always been intrigued with Matthew Cox and growing up in Tampa, I knew his story. But his brutal honesty, and his accepting of who he is and not trying to change that in a society that is all about other peoples optics of you is refreshing. I hope he is successful just so he can pay back the +8 million he owes so he can live a life that he now deserves. He paid his debt to society, regardless of what others may think. Murderers, kidnappers, and S. Offenders get 5-10 years. He served over 12 years. He deserves the second chance just as all of us who have made mistakes do.
