I must admit that as a guy now in his sixties and I may sound like an old fart here but most of the so called music that is in the charts leaves me cold and as an example I couldn't even name a Taylor Swift song, unlike my grandkids who probably can. Even those who release cover versions sound like they have phoned it in or are reading it very badly from a card or off google search. I'm all for someone who sings, plays and writes their own material and does it well and with that one thing that you must have, Talent. But will any of the so called "Stars" of today still be being listened to, talked about, or even still out there touring in 60 years time? I seriously doubt it. But then again I'm not the demographic these artists and their record labels are aiming for....

Hi Tone I got all I wanted. David Bowie - Waiting In The Sky The Rolling Stones - Live At The Rackit. George Harrison - Wonderwall Music. George Harrison - Electronic Sound Ringo Starr - Crooked Boy I got these in my rtegular record store. There was no John Lennon. At a second store I could buy Mind Games black vinyl. And finally yesterday late at night, I bought the Glow In The Dark at Discogs with a Dutch seller. For me being a Dutchie as well, that's very convenient. It was a good but expensive Record Store Day. I like you Are Here very goid of the Mind Games EP. And indeed, the sound is superb. Take care..

That final track…oh my gosh…. I didn’t want it to end….i want to play that track on repeat for a hundred years. I think it is my favorite Lennon track of all time bar none. A complete revelation. A thing of stunning beauty. What a voice!!! It is so absolutely beautiful and moving… a million times better than the final album version. I would trade a lot of my record collection for that one track! It’s a really really deeply beautiful 10 mins of pure Lennon. Thanks so much for nudging me to get it Tone!!

My brother and 2 of his lads did RSD. They made an outing of it and did the overnight thing to be at front of queue. As such they could have cleaned up but made the conscious decision to share some stuff so others had an opportunity. The Mind Games black is I understand audiophile while the luminous isn’t both were 28 quid or so not what you paid. I believe shops only got 2 copies of the black and 3 or 4 luminous. What really annoyed me was by 9.15 am yesterday (Rsd day) thy were being sold at £100 plus on eBay.

yes its infuriating that the flippers are getting this stuff early and getting it on ebay by lunchtime . It seems that most shops in the Uk were selling the Ep for £28 , my shop clearly liked the prices to take advantage . I wont use them again .

There was some sticker shock for me as well. I was trying to budget for this as I wanted both versions of the Lennon and a copy of the Starr. I was thinking as they were both four track EP’s that they would be between $20-30. I was not expecting both of them to sticker at over $30! My shops only had the glow in the dark one available, never saw the standard black. I actually preferred the glow in the dark to the standard as I’ll be getting the box set and will have a cleaner copy of it there. The glow in the dark is a novelty of a novelty really. So might as well go full novelty. But having both would have been nice. I have had a busy weekend though and so far have not got a chance to listen to it yet. Friday night I was out all day and night at a good friend and fraternity brother’s wedding. So having the 20 year reunion with all the brothers that came was a late night. Then up early for RSD, and getting my video filmed edited and uploaded. Plus added going and leasing a new car on top of all that. Whew. Today I shall rest and enjoy the EP’s.

What makes the price even more disgraceful is that you'll be able to get the mind games boxset in July for around £80 to £100 (based on previous lennon boxsets) and that will have 72 tracks on it.

I was in that queue at Rough Trade in Nottingham and was only able to get the Mind Games EP in the 180g black vinyl. The glow in the dark copy and the other records I was hoping for had sold out. But I have to ask why your record store were charging £33.99? When it was selling here for £27.99, which was the average price of all the record store day records at Rough Trade. I have played it now many, many times and I was blown away not only by the clarity of John's voice, but the overall stereo picture on my stereo. It sounded incredible seated as I was between the speakers. I played my copy of the original single of mind games to compare, and it sounded very murky, and as you know John had some kind of complex about his voice and would practically bury it in reverb. But now all that has gone, and we have those incredible Lennon tones in crystal clear sound, as they should be. I love every track on this EP. But if I had to pick a favourite it would be "you are here". All in all roll on June/July. I can't wait for this box set.

Glad you were able to buy the "audiophile" black vinyl rather than the " higher surface noise" luminos one since clearly sound quality is of paramount importance to you. In UK rrps are just suggested selling prices. I suspect for many record shops RS Days are the only days they can turnover enough money to justify their year round opening. I wouldn't blame them at all for marking up limited stock in very high demand.

I'm glad you were able to purchase an audiophile black copy of the album as for you sound quality is paramount over novelty value. I suspect for many physical record stores in UK RS Days are the only times they can generate sufficient turnover & profit to cover their annual overheads to remain open. Therfore I wouldn't at all blame them at all for marking up limited high demand stock In this case by a premium of £5 + vat. Sadly some RSD stock ends up on secondary market places purchased by people who have no interest in the artists just an opportunity to make a hefty profit with no fixed running costs.

I even had a listen to the 2020 mix used on Gimme Some truth and even that is nowhere near as great as mind games on the EP. Hi Tone, thanks for the video. I was up early and managed to get both Mind Games EPs Black and Glow £28 each. I know I must be mad, but no one’s forcing me 😂!The sound on the black vinyl is amazing and especially the B side! Although I’m very familiar with the versions from Lennon Anthology they do sound complete fresh with John’s voice coming back after all these years like he’s with you in the room. Can’t wait for the box set!

(First Album ) I saw a copy of John Lennon mind Games EP Glow in the dark online price was £ 69.99 , but for the standard Black vinyl online was £ 39.99 , £30 more just for the glow in the dark is just pathetic , if theses prices keep on going like this , then this will cause the death of vinyl once again & it will come sooner that we think 😢 .

I expect this set to follow the same format as the other 2 Ultimate mixes box sets John . So a remix of the main album, raw studio mixes (no overdubs) Element Mixes (isolated instruments) Evolution mixes (progress of the songs from demo to almost completed versions) and studio out takes and jams. Plus a hard back book.

Hi Tone and thank you for the informative and enthusiastic review. Firstly. I'm, sort of, in agreement about RSD. Only been to one and did not like the whole queuing, lottery and pricing aspects. Don't get me wrong, I fully support record stores but it has been a long time since I have enjoyed the experience of shopping from what I guess we now call the heyday. Full marks to those who are supporting the stores though. Shocked at the price of an EP these days. I remember buying 12" EPs for 99 pence so the pricing is now bonkers and exploitative. Also, while I would love to have the Mind Games EP, either black or glow, I will wait for the box set. I made a break several years ago when McCartney started the dozens of variants game and stopped the wasteful and exploitative nonsense. I will just buy the optimum version (which in this case is the deluxe box set). The Beatles in the sixties did not rip off fans by including singles on albums, why they now think it is OK to issue 50 odd versions of an album beggars belief. As I say, I have stopped playing the game and feel much better for it. Moans over! Your comments about the mixes and alternative tracks are heartening. Mind Games is a great album, and it deserves an expanded and polished up release. Really looking forward to the deluxe set and the stand-alone book, which I will buy as I don't consider that in the same manner as the multiple issues. The Imagine book and the Plastic Ono Band book are both worthy and excellent companions. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Personally im not too bothered about variants of the same album, sometimes these are fun to collect but Id rather have the choice with the ability to say no, rather than not have these things at all. I have to say though that I never blame the artist for these things - it's the marketing departments of the record labels that make these decisions so they are the ones to blame. Im also really looking forward to the box set, based on this EP it should be superb just like the previous two have been

The price of the John Lennon E.P. is crazy.. that would be about $70 here in Canada. I've never bothered with Record Store Day, even though they had Sparks "No. 1 In Heaven" as part of it. I'll just buy the CD when it comes out...

Great review! You had to buy it, of course. :) I could not spend this much on an EP. We have hit the ceiling for sure on vinyl prices. I wanted it (both) badly, but will not pay that much for it. Even paying $17 for the Now and Then 12" 45 was shocking to say the least. The last single I remember buying before that was way less than $7, for a 12 inch single. Love Me Do, I believe.

Yeah prices are high nowadays. It’s a shame because customers end up having to make difficult buying decisions based on budget. You’re right mate, the prices are crazy. I picked up a glow in the dark Mind Games for $65 which is similar to what you paid; but the Crooked Boy marble vinyl cost me $78, which was actually more expensive than the George Harrison coloured vinyls which I got for $75 each. To prove I’m not completely insane, I did pass on the Crosley turntable and 3” singles which I could have picked up for $499 - ie nearly double what is was selling for in the USA. 🤬 Anyway, the whinge out of the way, I listened to the mind games ep last night (in the dark of course), and was blown away by the new mixes - wow. Can’t wait for the full release and now have the book on pre-order.

The RSD thing is overly expensive the queue is mad! People sleeping overnight?? And then we see 100 copies on ebay at inflated prices... i guess its the one day the store can clean up? I saw 7" singles at 11.99 in rough trade (liam gallagher and john squires song) the other week.....them prices are here to stay...

Tone, great review! I completely agree with your thoughts vis a vis RSD prices. As there were a number of things I wanted (Caribou 50th anniversary, the Lennon eps, the Harrison zeotrope discs and the Ringo ep), I had made plans to rent a car and to travel to Princeton Records in NJ to get my RSD stuff. However, "best laid plans of mice and men...", I came down with a nasty upper respiratory virus and because the weather was rainy and cold, I canceled those plans. I got up early this morning and got ahold of the items I wanted on the secondary market. The Elton Caribou set was by far the priciest, as I paid $78 US for that, with shipping and tax. The other items I was able to get for a couple dollars over retail, not including shipping. What I really detest is the exclusivity of these items. I get that they are trying to create excitement and hype, but by doing this exclusivity crap, they are shutting out die-hard collectors, if for any reason they are unable to get to RSD. They should put out versions at a later date that may not have the colored vinyl, so that we can all enjoy these. That's my 2 cents and I know it I am probably in the minority on that. But I think it is ridiculous that secondary sellers are getting multiple copies for resale at a huge premium, when I cannot get even ONE at retail.

Hi Tone, I went to a 'local' record shop (26 miles away) at around 11am yesterday. No queue. They had both versions of the Mind Games ep. I got the black vinyl version as I wanted the better sound quality. The store was selling them for £27.99. Still pricey but cheaper than what you were charged. If Rough Trade have any unsold copies, you may be able to pick up a copy of the luminous vinyl version from their website on Monday evening.

Gave it a miss this year as auld guys like myself standing for hours in the cold with no portaloo in sight is not good.

Yesterday was the first time I actually went to my local stores on RSD. In the past, my late brother would get things for me from his local store with whom he had a great relationship and who would hold things for him. I agree with you 100% that the records are way overpriced. At the first store I picked up the Lennon EP (I wanted the black vinyl version of the Lennon, but they only had one copy left and it was the glow-in-the-dark version, so I bought it), The Ramones Sire Demos, The Talking Heads Live at WCOZ 77, and Neil Young's F##kin' Up. The second store I went to had the black vinyl version of the Lennon EP, but at $34, I wasn't going to buy another copy. It was at the third store that I got Ringo's EP; they only ordered two copies and I got the second one. At the first store they tried to sell me George's Electronic Sounds and Wonderwall. They said they looked really cool. I buy records for the music not their looks. While Wonderwall is a fine album, I wouldn't take Electronic Sounds again (I do have a copy of the original LP) if I was offered the master tapes. I've listened to the Lennon EP and though I don't have a version of the black vinyl for comparison, I think it sounds fine. Like you, I am excited to hear the box set later this summer. Ringo's EP is good. I'm glad he's using a different group of musicians and that they play on all four tracks. The songs, however, are not that great. Three of the four consist of two versus and choruses that are repeated many times. For me, they've made nice recordings of subpar songs. My favorite purchase yesterday is the Talking Heads. Terrific performance. Of the 14 tracks, 7 are previously unreleased. The Neil Young also is excellent, but I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it was being released on CD next week. Shame on me for not knowing this. And it is always great to get some new Ramones. I like RSD for the previously unreleased items, not the manufactured collector items of colored vinyl and picture discs for previously released albums.

I havent heard the whole Ringo EP yet but I really like February Sky - I think it's the best thing he's put out for some time. Enjoy your haul

Hi Tone, great review, I couldn’t agree more with your comments about quality of the mixes, it’s amazing, really looking forward to the summer. I got mine yesterday in Winnipeg, Canada. I did currency conversion and mine was about £22 ($38 CAD), so I am not not sure who dictates price. Even within my city there are ($10) differences on the same record. I think some retailers are just too greedy. I also picked Ringo EP and I think it is fantastic.

I think it's the retailers who are bumping up the price for RSD , which is bad as RSD is supporting them but they are ripping off their customers . having said that , you got yours for a really good price - the cheapest Ive heard about so far. Went day after RSD, and though had no intention of picking up Mind Games (EP), I was disappointed in not finding Wonderful picture disc, so ended up picking up the glow in the dark, and was blown away by John's Voice, though I still prefer the 2000's CD remix a wee bit more. Yet, "You are Here" never sounded better to me than this take!!!! I loved how it kept going....In the end, you are right, the prices are overboard, but boy oh boy, did I enjoy the heck out of it!!!!!! Great video.

Hi Tone i agree with everything you say about the price of beatle and beatle related product i went into Hmv in kings lynn and you could get for instance 3 pink floyd lps remarsterd version for 50 quid but they wanted 40 for magical mystery tour what a rip off the retailers and apple know that fans will buy it and thats the problem. i am looking forward to the mind games remix it one of my favourites behind the P O B lp and the imagine great stuff.

Hi Tone, great video. I think you were taken advantage of mate. The Mind Games price was advertised well ahead by many outlets at £27.99, so you getting charged £34 is plain wrong. I paid €35 here . Might be worth avoiding that outlet in future or at least having a quiet word.

I got glow in the dark Mind Games and Parklife picture disc by Blur that I didn't know about for record store day. I saw the Georges rereleases also but I wanna get an old copy of Wonderwall Music because I like the package more. There was no queue at all in Vienna at 11am. They had a lot of copies because they just came in. I payed 31,99€ (27,59 pounds) which is a bit less but too much aswell.

Beatle tone..yes..price wise there taking the piss! Mind games the song is probably one of johns best solo efforts. I'm glad the sound quality is incredible. So I would likely begrudgingly pick up a copy as I have new speakers arriving today that I paid £1800 quid for!

Hi Tone hello mate what can I say about rsd well I don't do it anymore haven't done for years.i ain't queuing for hours to be disappointed when I get to the front of the queue, my local record shop ordered 10 of each of the Lennon EPs to receive one of each which is a joke when nearly 40 people wanted it and yet I saw a seller on eBay who had 10 copies for sale how did that happen ? And the pricing is ridiculous too if you look at what you get for your money on this ep anyway tone glad managed to get a copy 👍🏻

Hi Martin this is only the second one ive done and i was lucky. I rocked up at midday no queue by then and just picked up 2. But it is a tital fiasco with the ebay crew getting there early and havibg them on ebay at twice or three times the price by lunch time. My store definitely took advantage of y seekibg fir £6 higher than almost every shop in the uk. I sont use them again.

I drew the line under this record. The price for an EP is absolute extortion. So on that basis I refused to purchase it. Instead I purchased blurs Parklife for €27.00 which for me is fair game.

Stone me that price is criminal! I wouldn’t pay that much. I’ve started rethinking my practice of buying vinyl. For example the one hand clapping releases are not the same so it looks like collectors have to buy two versions to get a complete set of songs. As much as I love Mccartney I’m not falling for that marketing trick. It would detract from the pleasure of owning this stuff if in my mind I knew that I’m being taken for a mug!

OMG!! 34 smackerooni's!! for an EP? What is the box set going be? You might need to take out a second mortgage Tone?? Apple are just taking so many liberties these days.The Ultimate mix for "Mind Games"? is it much different to "Gimme Some Truth : Ultimate Mixes" we had back in 2020?? I get the feeling if John was alive and this was still getting a 50th anniversary reissue, he would have buried his vocals.Again! Like he seem to instruct the producers, of all of his albums. Sean, Paul hicks, Sam Gannon and Co. seemed to accentuate them. At least to my mind, they did with "Gimme Some Truth : Ultimate Mixes". By the way have you thought where you and Mrs Beatley Tone, are going to move to? After having to sell the house to pay for the "Mind Games" Box Set?? Seriously Apple!!

The Plastic Ono band ultimate mixes box set was around £85 if I remember correctly. Mind games has the same amount of content in terms of discs (6 CDs and 2 Blu-rays, book etc) . I thought the POB was great value for money so I hope Mind Games will be as well. The EP was expensive though but vinyl just is . I think this remix of mind Games wipes the floor with that Gimme Some Truth version - it's utterly brilliant.

Just got a chance to to listen to the mind Games ep. Yes johns voice is clear but I’m not a great fan of the songs. The long version of You are Here is pointless imo. Always thought Mind Games was the weakest of the fabs solo releases in 1973.

I hate Record Store Day. So unfair on those who can’t queue for hours. My local record shop had one copy of the Mind Games EP! Needless to say, gone as soon as the shop opened. The cost is also ridiculous. It certainly doesn’t encourage me to visit my local shop. Limited copies, ridiculous queues, crazy prices…no thanks.

RSD is just a cash in now. Nothing to do with promoting the stores themselves. Lower prices would encourage more sales. So RSD is shooting itself in the foot I think. The artists & record companies are fleecing the fans. But, if people are desperate to collect collectibles, which I fully understand, then high prices will prevail. Maybe next year everyone should just refuse to go to the record stores on RSD, only then things might change.

I dont blame the artists , it's the record labels and retailers who are taking advantage of fans FOMO Mark. But like you say , RSD is there to help the independent record stores but they indeed shooting themselves in the foot as you say. I wont use my store again as most people in the uK have picked this up for £28 - whihc is still expensive but cheaper than what I had to pay.

Sounds like a rip off, and it’s not even worth it. To hear remixes from an album that is not even good to start with. But the thing is if I were whoever release this album, I would keep on doing it as a matter fact I’d raise the price, Because there are always suckers. I hope they are going to release a Ringo of the fourth EP. Get rated lineup for that glow-in-the-dark vinyl.

The job of doing these remixes and masters are costly. Stop complaining about the prices. The alternative is no rereleases what so ever. I'm shure the Lennon estate has got enough money, they're not getting any richer releasing this. As for Mind Games. Awful album. Lennons worst. But the new album cover is beautiful.

I must admit that as a guy now in his sixties and I may sound like an old fart here but most of the so called music that is in the charts leaves me cold and as an example I couldn't even name a Taylor Swift song, unlike my grandkids who probably can. Even those who release cover versions sound like they have phoned it in or are reading it very badly from a card or off google search. I'm all for someone who sings, plays and writes their own material and does it well and with that one thing that you must have, Talent. But will any of the so called "Stars" of today still be being listened to, talked about, or even still out there touring in 60 years time? I seriously doubt it. But then again I'm not the demographic these artists and their record labels are aiming for....

George Harrison - Electronic Sound Ringo Starr - Crooked Boy I got these in my rtegular record store. There was no John Lennon. At a second store I could buy Mind Games black vinyl. And finally yesterday late at night, I bought the Glow In The Dark at Discogs with a Dutch seller. For me being a Dutchie as well, that's very convenient. It was a good but expensive Record Store Day. I like you Are Here very goid of the Mind Games EP. And indeed, the sound is superb. Take care..

That final track…oh my gosh…. I didn’t want it to end….i want to play that track on repeat for a hundred years. I think it is my favorite Lennon track of all time bar none. A complete revelation. A thing of stunning beauty. What a voice!!! It is so absolutely beautiful and moving… a million times better than the final album version. I would trade a lot of my record collection for that one track! It’s a really really deeply beautiful 10 mins of pure Lennon. Thanks so much for nudging me to get it Tone!!

My brother and 2 of his lads did RSD. They made an outing of it and did the overnight thing to be at front of queue. As such they could have cleaned up but made the conscious decision to share some stuff so others had an opportunity. The Mind Games black is I understand audiophile while the luminous isn’t both were 28 quid or so not what you paid. I believe shops only got 2 copies of the black and 3 or 4 luminous. What really annoyed me was by 9.15 am yesterday (Rsd day) thy were being sold at £100 plus on eBay.

There was some sticker shock for me as well. I was trying to budget for this as I wanted both versions of the Lennon and a copy of the Starr. I was thinking as they were both four track EP’s that they would be between $20-30. I was not expecting both of them to sticker at over $30! My shops only had the glow in the dark one available, never saw the standard black. I actually preferred the glow in the dark to the standard as I’ll be getting the box set and will have a cleaner copy of it there. The glow in the dark is a novelty of a novelty really. So might as well go full novelty. But having both would have been nice. I have had a busy weekend though and so far have not got a chance to listen to it yet. Friday night I was out all day and night at a good friend and fraternity brother’s wedding. So having the 20 year reunion with all the brothers that came was a late night. Then up early for RSD, and getting my video filmed edited and uploaded. Plus added going and leasing a new car on top of all that. Whew. Today I shall rest and enjoy the EP’s.

What makes the price even more disgraceful is that you'll be able to get the mind games boxset in July for around £80 to £100 (based on previous lennon boxsets) and that will have 72 tracks on it.
True although remember thats cds not vinyl. The ultimate mixes box sets have always been well priced. Im still not really over the price of this …although it is brilliant
I was in that queue at Rough Trade in Nottingham and was only able to get the Mind Games EP in the 180g black vinyl. The glow in the dark copy and the other records I was hoping for had sold out. But I have to ask why your record store were charging £33.99? When it was selling here for £27.99, which was the average price of all the record store day records at Rough Trade. I have played it now many, many times and I was blown away not only by the clarity of John's voice, but the overall stereo picture on my stereo. It sounded incredible seated as I was between the speakers. I played my copy of the original single of mind games to compare, and it sounded very murky, and as you know John had some kind of complex about his voice and would practically bury it in reverb. But now all that has gone, and we have those incredible Lennon tones in crystal clear sound, as they should be. I love every track on this EP. But if I had to pick a favourite it would be "you are here". All in all roll on June/July. I can't wait for this box set.
Glad you were able to buy the "audiophile" black vinyl rather than the " higher surface noise" luminos one since clearly sound quality is of paramount importance to you. In UK rrps are just suggested selling prices. I suspect for many record shops RS Days are the only days they can turnover enough money to justify their year round opening. I wouldn't blame them at all for marking up limited stock in very high demand.
I'm glad you were able to purchase an audiophile black copy of the album as for you sound quality is paramount over novelty value. I suspect for many physical record stores in UK RS Days are the only times they can generate sufficient turnover & profit to cover their annual overheads to remain open. Therfore I wouldn't at all blame them at all for marking up limited high demand stock In this case by a premium of £5 + vat. Sadly some RSD stock ends up on secondary market places purchased by people who have no interest in the artists just an opportunity to make a hefty profit with no fixed running costs.

Hi Tone, thanks for the video. I was up early and managed to get both Mind Games EPs Black and Glow £28 each. I know I must be mad, but no one’s forcing me 😂!The sound on the black vinyl is amazing and especially the B side! Although I’m very familiar with the versions from Lennon Anthology they do sound complete fresh with John’s voice coming back after all these years like he’s with you in the room. Can’t wait for the box set!

(First Album ) I saw a copy of John Lennon mind Games EP Glow in the dark online price was £ 69.99 , but for the standard Black vinyl online was £ 39.99 , £30 more just for the glow in the dark is just pathetic , if theses prices keep on going like this , then this will cause the death of vinyl once again & it will come sooner that we think 😢 .

What can we look forward to on this upcoming mind games box release? I expect this set to follow the same format as the other 2 Ultimate mixes box sets John . So a remix of the main album, raw studio mixes (no overdubs) Element Mixes (isolated instruments) Evolution mixes (progress of the songs from demo to almost completed versions) and studio out takes and jams. Plus a hard back book.

Hi Tone and thank you for the informative and enthusiastic review. Firstly. I'm, sort of, in agreement about RSD. Only been to one and did not like the whole queuing, lottery and pricing aspects. Don't get me wrong, I fully support record stores but it has been a long time since I have enjoyed the experience of shopping from what I guess we now call the heyday. Full marks to those who are supporting the stores though. Shocked at the price of an EP these days. I remember buying 12" EPs for 99 pence so the pricing is now bonkers and exploitative. Also, while I would love to have the Mind Games EP, either black or glow, I will wait for the box set. I made a break several years ago when McCartney started the dozens of variants game and stopped the wasteful and exploitative nonsense. I will just buy the optimum version (which in this case is the deluxe box set). The Beatles in the sixties did not rip off fans by including singles on albums, why they now think it is OK to issue 50 odd versions of an album beggars belief. As I say, I have stopped playing the game and feel much better for it. Moans over! Your comments about the mixes and alternative tracks are heartening. Mind Games is a great album, and it deserves an expanded and polished up release. Really looking forward to the deluxe set and the stand-alone book, which I will buy as I don't consider that in the same manner as the multiple issues. The Imagine book and the Plastic Ono Band book are both worthy and excellent companions. Keep up the good work. Cheers!

Personally im not too bothered about variants of the same album, sometimes these are fun to collect but Id rather have the choice with the ability to say no, rather than not have these things at all. I have to say though that I never blame the artist for these things - it's the marketing departments of the record labels that make these decisions so they are the ones to blame. Im also really looking forward to the box set, based on this EP it should be superb just like the previous two have been
The price of the John Lennon E.P. is crazy.. that would be about $70 here in Canada. I've never bothered with Record Store Day, even though they had Sparks "No. 1 In Heaven" as part of it. I'll just buy the CD when it comes out...
Yeah its nuts. Most other people in the UK paid around £27. My store bumped up the prices . I wont use them next time

Great review! You had to buy it, of course. :) I could not spend this much on an EP. We have hit the ceiling for sure on vinyl prices. I wanted it (both) badly, but will not pay that much for it. Even paying $17 for the Now and Then 12" 45 was shocking to say the least. The last single I remember buying before that was way less than $7, for a 12 inch single. Love Me Do, I believe.

Now and Then was a shocker to me. I think the last 7"single I bought was Shiny Happy people by Rem in 1991 - I think it was around £1.50
Yeah prices are high nowadays. It’s a shame because customers end up having to make difficult buying decisions based on budget. But I guess everything is priced high today, even a dozen eggs is costly! Ha ha 🍳 🥚 But I’m happy for you getting the items! I have no patience for RSD anymore. You’re right mate, the prices are crazy. I picked up a glow in the dark Mind Games for $65 which is similar to what you paid; but the Crooked Boy marble vinyl cost me $78, which was actually more expensive than the George Harrison coloured vinyls which I got for $75 each. To prove I’m not completely insane, I did pass on the Crosley turntable and 3” singles which I could have picked up for $499 - ie nearly double what is was selling for in the USA. 🤬 Anyway, the whinge out of the way, I listened to the mind games ep last night (in the dark of course), and was blown away by the new mixes - wow. Can’t wait for the full release and now have the book on pre-order.

Tone, great review! I completely agree with your thoughts vis a vis RSD prices. As there were a number of things I wanted (Caribou 50th anniversary, the Lennon eps, the Harrison zeotrope discs and the Ringo ep), I had made plans to rent a car and to travel to Princeton Records in NJ to get my RSD stuff. However, "best laid plans of mice and men...", I came down with a nasty upper respiratory virus and because the weather was rainy and cold, I canceled those plans. I got up early this morning and got ahold of the items I wanted on the secondary market. The Elton Caribou set was by far the priciest, as I paid $78 US for that, with shipping and tax. The other items I was able to get for a couple dollars over retail, not including shipping. What I really detest is the exclusivity of these items. I get that they are trying to create excitement and hype, but by doing this exclusivity crap, they are shutting out die-hard collectors, if for any reason they are unable to get to RSD. They should put out versions at a later date that may not have the colored vinyl, so that we can all enjoy these. That's my 2 cents and I know it I am probably in the minority on that. But I think it is ridiculous that secondary sellers are getting multiple copies for resale at a huge premium, when I cannot get even ONE at retail.

Hi Tone, I went to a 'local' record shop (26 miles away) at around 11am yesterday. No queue. They had both versions of the Mind Games ep. I got the black vinyl version as I wanted the better sound quality. The store was selling them for £27.99. Still pricey but cheaper than what you were charged. If Rough Trade have any unsold copies, you may be able to pick up a copy of the luminous vinyl version from their website on Monday evening.
Yes i managed to avoid the queues too. It definitely Seems my store was charging over the odds as youre the second person to say they paud 27.99. I will call them out on their twiter. I yhink ive talked myself out if the luminous one now. Enjoy the record Andrew- its superb
Good to see you got the Mind Games ep, Tone. I too have mixed feelings about RSD and see it as a bit of a cash grab. Having said that, I have picked up a few nice items over the years. Gave it a miss this year as auld guys like myself standing for hours in the cold with no portaloo in sight is not good.

Yesterday was the first time I actually went to my local stores on RSD. In the past, my late brother would get things for me from his local store with whom he had a great relationship and who would hold things for him. I agree with you 100% that the records are way overpriced. At the first store I picked up the Lennon EP (I wanted the black vinyl version of the Lennon, but they only had one copy left and it was the glow-in-the-dark version, so I bought it), The Ramones Sire Demos, The Talking Heads Live at WCOZ 77, and Neil Young's F##kin' Up. The second store I went to had the black vinyl version of the Lennon EP, but at $34, I wasn't going to buy another copy. It was at the third store that I got Ringo's EP; they only ordered two copies and I got the second one. At the first store they tried to sell me George's Electronic Sounds and Wonderwall. They said they looked really cool. I buy records for the music not their looks. While Wonderwall is a fine album, I wouldn't take Electronic Sounds again (I do have a copy of the original LP) if I was offered the master tapes. I've listened to the Lennon EP and though I don't have a version of the black vinyl for comparison, I think it sounds fine. Like you, I am excited to hear the box set later this summer. Ringo's EP is good. I'm glad he's using a different group of musicians and that they play on all four tracks. The songs, however, are not that great. Three of the four consist of two versus and choruses that are repeated many times. For me, they've made nice recordings of subpar songs. My favorite purchase yesterday is the Talking Heads. Terrific performance. Of the 14 tracks, 7 are previously unreleased. The Neil Young also is excellent, but I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it was being released on CD next week. Shame on me for not knowing this. And it is always great to get some new Ramones. I like RSD for the previously unreleased items, not the manufactured collector items of colored vinyl and picture discs for previously released albums.
Glad you managed too pick up everything you wanted on your first RSD (my second) and the thing about Electronic Sound made me laugh. The George albums didnt interest me. I havent heard the whole Ringo EP yet but I really like February Sky - I think it's the best thing he's put out for some time. Enjoy your haul
Hi Tone, great review, I couldn’t agree more with your comments about quality of the mixes, it’s amazing, really looking forward to the summer. I got mine yesterday in Winnipeg, Canada. I did currency conversion and mine was about £22 ($38 CAD), so I am not not sure who dictates price. Even within my city there are ($10) differences on the same record. I think some retailers are just too greedy. I also picked Ringo EP and I think it is fantastic.

Went day after RSD, and though had no intention of picking up Mind Games (EP), I was disappointed in not finding Wonderful picture disc, so ended up picking up the glow in the dark, and was blown away by John's Voice, though I still prefer the 2000's CD remix a wee bit more. Yet, "You are Here" never sounded better to me than this take!!!! I loved how it kept going....In the end, you are right, the prices are overboard, but boy oh boy, did I enjoy the heck out of it!!!!!! Great video.

Hi Tone i agree with everything you say about the price of beatle and beatle related product i went into Hmv in kings lynn and you could get for instance 3 pink floyd lps remarsterd version for 50 quid but they wanted 40 for magical mystery tour what a rip off the retailers and apple know that fans will buy it and thats the problem. i am looking forward to the mind games remix it one of my favourites behind the P O B lp and the imagine great stuff.

Hi Tone, great video. I think you were taken advantage of mate. The Mind Games price was advertised well ahead by many outlets at £27.99, so you getting charged £34 is plain wrong. I paid €35 here . Might be worth avoiding that outlet in future or at least having a quiet word.

Tbh i didnt see what the price was until i picked it up and had said word with the bloke behind the counter which of course fell on deaf ears as it was probably nothing to do with him. Got the Ringo Ep and this Lennon one yesterday. Not too bothered about the price considering what some people are looking for them on EBay. They are great collectors items

RSD is just a feast for flipping . Been to a few in the past but annoying to see same people in queue just there to flip on e bay later in day. Spoils it for true fans or collectors. Maybe it's just me as an old cynic mind.

I got glow in the dark Mind Games and Parklife picture disc by Blur that I didn't know about for record store day. I saw the Georges rereleases also but I wanna get an old copy of Wonderwall Music because I like the package more. There was no queue at all in Vienna at 11am. They had a lot of copies because they just came in. I payed 31,99€ (27,59 pounds) which is a bit less but too much aswell.

Beatle tone..yes..price wise there taking the piss! Mind games the song is probably one of johns best solo efforts. I'm glad the sound quality is incredible. So I would likely begrudgingly pick up a copy as I have new speakers arriving today that I paid £1800 quid for!

Hi Tone hello mate what can I say about rsd well I don't do it anymore haven't done for years.i ain't queuing for hours to be disappointed when I get to the front of the queue, my local record shop ordered 10 of each of the Lennon EPs to receive one of each which is a joke when nearly 40 people wanted it and yet I saw a seller on eBay who had 10 copies for sale how did that happen ? And the pricing is ridiculous too if you look at what you get for your money on this ep anyway tone glad managed to get a copy 👍🏻
Hi Martin this is only the second one ive done and i was lucky. I rocked up at midday no queue by then and just picked up 2. But it is a tital fiasco with the ebay crew getting there early and havibg them on ebay at twice or three times the price by lunch time. My store definitely took advantage of y seekibg fir £6 higher than almost every shop in the uk. I sont use them again.
I drew the line under this record. The price for an EP is absolute extortion. So on that basis I refused to purchase it. Instead I purchased blurs Parklife for €27.00 which for me is fair game.

Stone me that price is criminal! I wouldn’t pay that much. I’ve started rethinking my practice of buying vinyl. For example the one hand clapping releases are not the same so it looks like collectors have to buy two versions to get a complete set of songs. As much as I love Mccartney I’m not falling for that marketing trick. It would detract from the pleasure of owning this stuff if in my mind I knew that I’m being taken for a mug!
No if you buy the vinyl One Hand Clapping you will get everything so you dont need to buy the CD as well

Apple are just taking so many liberties these days.The Ultimate mix for "Mind Games"? is it much different to "Gimme Some Truth : Ultimate Mixes" we had back in 2020?? I get the feeling if John was alive and this was still getting a 50th anniversary reissue, he would have buried his vocals.Again! Like he seem to instruct the producers, of all of his albums. Sean, Paul hicks, Sam Gannon and Co. seemed to accentuate them. At least to my mind, they did with "Gimme Some Truth : Ultimate Mixes". By the way have you thought where you and Mrs Beatley Tone, are going to move to? After having to sell the house to pay for the "Mind Games" Box Set?? Seriously Apple!!
The Plastic Ono band ultimate mixes box set was around £85 if I remember correctly. Mind games has the same amount of content in terms of discs (6 CDs and 2 Blu-rays, book etc) . I thought the POB was great value for money so I hope Mind Games will be as well. The EP was expensive though but vinyl just is . I think this remix of mind Games wipes the floor with that Gimme Some Truth version - it's utterly brilliant.

I dudnt really see it as re-writing history just as an alternative cover which is actually quite nice and gives us something different. Quite iften in the past singles have had different sleeves to the LP right?
Just got a chance to to listen to the mind Games ep. Yes johns voice is clear but I’m not a great fan of the songs. The long version of You are Here is pointless imo. Always thought Mind Games was the weakest of the fabs solo releases in 1973.

RSD is just a cash in now. Nothing to do with promoting the stores themselves. Lower prices would encourage more sales. So RSD is shooting itself in the foot I think. The artists & record companies are fleecing the fans. But, if people are desperate to collect collectibles, which I fully understand, then high prices will prevail. Maybe next year everyone should just refuse to go to the record stores on RSD, only then things might change.

Sounds like a rip off, and it’s not even worth it. To hear remixes from an album that is not even good to start with. But the thing is if I were whoever release this album, I would keep on doing it as a matter fact I’d raise the price, Because there are always suckers. I hope they are going to release a Ringo of the fourth EP. Get rated lineup for that glow-in-the-dark vinyl.

The job of doing these remixes and masters are costly. Stop complaining about the prices. The alternative is no rereleases what so ever. I'm shure the Lennon estate has got enough money, they're not getting any richer releasing this. As for Mind Games. Awful album. Lennons worst. But the new album cover is beautiful.
