Doing It Ourselves - Episode 1

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.
Help me to keep making videos and restoring this building by visiting my patreon page.

Michael’s rough sulatana scones.
This recipe works best when done by hand the old fashioned way. Food mixers tend to ruin the final texture.
Makes 8 (double ingredients for 16)
Preheat oven to 220C/200-fan oven (420f)
Ingredients.
240g Plain Flour (or half plain / half bread flour)
1 tsp Cream or tartar
1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
90g Unsalted butter (chilled)
45g Caster Sugar
90g Sulatanas
1 Large egg
100ml Milk
( If you don’t have cream of tartar or bicarbonate of soda, you can use 1 slightly heaped teaspoon of baking powder instead. Although the cream of tartar and bicarb’ tastes much better)
Method:
Sift together flour, sugar, cream of tartar and bicarbonate of soda in a large bowl.
Cut chilled butter into small cubes and add to bowl.
Gently rub the butter and dry mix together between thumb and fingers. (This bit requires patience)
When completely combined your mixture should look like fine breadcrumbs.
Add the sultanas.
Beat together the egg and milk in a separate bowl and add to the mix - saving just enough to brush a tiny bit on each scone before baking. (One or two tablespoons full)
Mix well with a wooden spoon until fully combined.
The texture should be a fluffy but firm, slightly sticky paste.
Spoon 8 separate heaped tablespoons of mixture on to your baking tray, lined with a silicon baking sheet or greased baking paper.
Space evenly to give them enough room to double in size when baking.
Add any leftover mix to the scones that seem smaller than the rest. Or scoop some mix from oversized ones to add to the smallest.
There should be 8 evenly sized mounds.
Gently fluff up each scone with the tip of the spoon so each one has a slightly spiky texture.
Gently brush on a little of the remaining egg/milk mix.
Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for 15 minutes, or until risen and golden.

    • They were in the U.K. but they got dropped. This is what Michael wrote on the Facebook fan group.......Unfortunately Chateau de la Basmaignee will no longer feature in the upcoming new series of Escape to the Chateau DIY. We filmed for 7 months last year and worked very hard to bring you our progress since series one, but Kindling media and Channel 4 have since decide not to use any of the footage, stating that we weren't interesting enough and didn't want to lower the tone of the programme. It's very disappointing for us, but when one door closes, another opens... And we have a lot of doors at the chateau.

But it is cool that they decided to invest the money instead of just living a lazy life. good for them. To be honest, I don't know where that building is, but I'm sure it is much more expensive than I said.

I’ve been digging for years trying to find somebody recording their progress on restoring an old Château, they have such an awesome history and sadly there isn’t enough people willing to invest into restoring those masterpieces coming from a french family it means the world to me when I see people like you restoring pieces of our history, they are such an important part of the french history. • from a French person, thank you very much for taking the initiative of renovating this Château. Many are in bad state but cost too much and require a lot of investment. I know that for few of them, locals gather their effort in order to keep the Château from falling into ruins but it's not easy. By the way, do you know to whom this château belonged to in the past? because the bees that you can see on the fireplace are the symbols of rulers/sovereign/kings (Napoleon used it as an ornament too)

I think that long long ago something started the universe that no longer exists, but according to the Bible god created everything on this earth (which isn’t scientifically correct). It also says he has a plan for everyone and that everyone is created by him, I don’t believe in this because I think it’s up to you. There is no plan unless you yourself create it. I don’t believe in heaven, purgatory, or hell, I think after you die you’re just gone. There are also many other reasons like of which putting your life and beliefs into one book and a bunch of people who believe(d) in it. I respect your beliefs and think they are valid and you can believe in them, but I also ask you to respect mine and others by not going around preaching it in completely unrelated comment sections.

He is the beginning and the end. Revelation 22:13 ''I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.'' Proverbs 16:9 ''We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps.'' Hebrews 9:27 ''And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment'' Matthew 25:46 ''And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”' Remember, we none of us are righteous by ourselves. We are made righteous through Jesus Christ. Lastly, I don't care whether it's unrelated or not. Jesus Christ said in Mark 16:15 ''And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Now you have been introduced to Gospel. I can't force you to believe but I truly love and care for you and where you will spend your eternity, Eliza. I pray that you seek God and He reveals Himself to you. Sure, we have some old houses, buildings, and such that are scattered across the nation, but nothing as grand or large that has such a magical and spiritual element to it, like Europe has. The U.S.'s history was not very "wealthy" per se till the Industrial period, so buildings weren't too extravagant before then. I even had to do a double take to rechecked the price and see if it wasn't 3000€. What an amazing bargain. Edit: the style of your tea set has a rather Asian-inspired design, might be a set from the late 19th century, Japan was very trendy at that time, and it was common to have Japanese and Japanese-inspired objects at home when one could afford it. This blue and white design is really telling. Edit 2: Oh you're not far from Laval? This is a quiet but quaint little city! I went there once only but the area was really pleasant.
