    • Christian…. In another couple of months, you will have THREE Toyota drivers following your channel 😂 I sold my Discovery 4 (to the Toyota dealer) and have a HILUX coming in January. I need the reliability (and less depreciation!) that the Toyota offers, for towing recovered Land Rovers and collecting Defender chassis’ in the course of my business. I can’t be doing with a broken crankshaft 250 miles from home, with a fully loaded trailer…. but I will continue watching your channel - great job!!

  • Brilliant session! Particularly agree about the looks, when I see another D3 I automatically assume they are an enthusiast as the time has long passed where they are owned by non-mechanically minded people, now they are much rarer to see - it's probably a 10:1 ratio of D4's to D3's in the south west of england

  • An excellent piece of belly-aching, surely surpassing Jeremy Clarkson in its wit and persistence to the bitter end! :-) Well done! I suspect Vera is one of those who finds life, the universe and everything slightly ridiculous and continuously amusing and sees Christian simply as the local representative. I found out that the two thing you need to buy BEFORE a buying a LR is a decent battery charger (to keep it on charge when at home) and a battery pack (to start it when the battery goes flat anywhere else). There's so much electrical stuff on it that you simply don't need but which some focus group said 'Oh yes, that's be nice . . . and that . . . and that . . . and . . .' etc. A very informative and enjoyable channel. Thank you.

  • Another great video. I have written a similar rant when I 'upgraded' to a D4 from a D3. A few points. I have had a D3 auto for 8 years and a D4 8 speed for 4 years. Both now are around 300,000km. The D3 has had a rebuilt gearbox and torque convertor, and the D4 has had a rebuilt engine due to crankshaft failure. Crankshaft failure is more prevalent in the 3.0 version. You mention that the EGR are more complex in the 3.0 litre. Maybe, and they are certainly a different design, but 3.0 EGR do not cause problems like the 2.7 EGR do. I agree that the are paddles are pretty useless off road. But you are not making a fair comparison as your D3 is manual transmission. Other than for engine braking, the paddles are not needed. I just had a whole weekend off road in Spain and it was in D 99% of the time. The HP8 transmission is superior to the HP6 in every way. Also, they just don't break. The D4 is 10% more fuel efficient, like for like. My D3 has given 11.36 l/100km over 218,932km. My D4 has given 10.39l/100km over 186,307km. This was a major consideration when I retired my D3 from work and replaced it with a D4, that, and I no longer trusted the gearbox. 110,000km later, the crankshaft snapped, but hey, I'm not looking at my feet, the D3 towed the dead D4 from central Brittany, France to Kent, UK for a rebuild. The D3 does look better, inside and out. The D3 front seats are better, so much so I swapped my D3 driver seat in to my D4. That fabric SE spec seat has now had my fat arse on it for nearly 600,000km, and it's still not torn anywhere and still the best chair I own. The grab handles on the head rest are a must too, if you camp in the back like I do. I tend to drive my cars for maybe 12 hours a day and the quietness is a bonus. I still look back at both cars when I park them, and I love them both. I prefer the look of the D3, but I prefer the drive of the D4.

What you have to remember ist that this is KZhead , and we are not sponsored in any way, we are not out to please anyone, but to report what we like and don't like about our cars. We get so so many questions, daily, about which Discovery to buy. And at those are these type of videos mainly aimed. Not at guys like you, who have already made their educated decission on which Disco to drive, and who actually know what commitment it takes to drive a Discovery. But I am glad you watched it and took the time to give us your feedback😃👍🙋‍♀️Vera

  • Best Christian Vera and Mr. Schrauber. In LR Time's latest video about the 5 ways the Discovery 3 beats the Discovery 4 Christian mentioned about upcoming "major repairs". I immediately thought to mention this video by Altblech-shrauber to LR time. When looking for this video, to my surprise, i found you are already in contact.😃 I had a 2005 Discovery 3 HSE, which I bought from a dealer in 2009 - full service history but far from perfect due to an owner who did not care. The body off frame work was one reason I sold it. I also maintain and repair my own cars, and your channels inspire me such that I want to buy a discovery 3/4 again. Keep up good work. Much appreciated!👏👌👏

  • Happy New Year!!! LOL, only just started watching you guys for a couple of weeks and am already hooked :) I loved the engine rebuild and learnt so much from it! I have a Discovery 3 2005 "Cat D" write off as it was 6 years ago when bought it and repaired it.... I'm no mechanic but I love the vehicle and you are right it seems to be an addictive passion to keep the car going !. My wife has just bought a Discovery Sport as a replacement for our Disco3 but I'm now going to sell my old 2005 Mercedes to keep the Disco as my main car. as I've invested so much time in it. Recently fixed a "bing-bong" due to a drifting steering sensor (replacing many components along the way :)) Anyway I recently had the cambelt replaced but our local mechanic didn't replace the serpentine belt or oil pump belt stating it wouldn't do any harm if they broke anyway :( since watching your engine rebuild and the worry about the oil pump and lack of oil this is now worrying me. How easy is it to replace these belts and I'd tend to replace the oil pump at the same time? I've not managed to find many videos on youtube to date but would really value your advice... Anyway keep up the great work I've nowhere near your expertise but it definitely keeps me excited and pushes me to maintain my own Disco (y)!!! Cheers BoB

    • Better write me an email. If you have the original pump in a 2005 and had now the timing belt replaced without the pump, I would not start the engine anymore. The pump casting usually fails right after replacing the tensioner. It just happened to Outback Discovery here on KZhead. Your mechanic should not have replaced the belt without the pump - if it is still the original non-reinforced pump. By now any LR mechanic on the planet should know this. Replacing the pump is about 1-2 more hours work than just replacing the timing belt. The serpentine belt does not destroy anything if it fails but it still leaves you strandet and it’s only 25$. Now it will be 100$. I think you need a new mechanic 😳. Christian

  • Thank you Christian and Vera. One of your best videos! Much of which I agree with you. I have a 2005 (2.7 litre) Discovery 3 S and a 2010 (3 litre) Range-rover Sport SE. Both are automatic and both have the 6 speed lever operated box. We are having a few problems getting fuel in the UK right now and we have just returned from a 500 mile round trip. Because the Discovery 3 had more fuel in it at the beginning of the trip, we were forced to use this vehicle for our trip, which it did to perfection! Its Launch is very good and it will drive very happily all day at 2 0 more miles/hour than it should be. Remember that our Range-rover has the 6 speed box, so launches well. But according to the computer its fuel economy is about 3 miles/gallon better than the Disco. However it is much more of a bumpy ride and because the engine noise is reduced, does promote more “Oh my God” comments due to the increase of rattling sounds from inside the vehicle. Despite the horror stories we hear, together with the guilt your videos cause because we don’t maintain our vehicles as well as you do, our 16 year old Discovery 3 is and has been an incredibly reliable vehicle. What other 16 year old vehicles would you be happy to use on a 500 mile round trip, without having to worry about it? As regards Toyota - v - LR, there is only one brand of vehicle, no matter how old it is, that will go anywhere in this world, including Buckingham Palace WITH PRIDE. And it isn’t the Toyota!

EVERYTHING that you say is valid. Don't worry about the Toyota people and the people leaving negative comments. They probably never picked up a wrench in their life and they are jealous of your knowledge. Keep making excellent videos. You are so good at what you do, I would like to take a flight to come to germany and meet you. In any case. Nothing new here. • Loved my LR3and it's design (much better looking than a LR4) for me was near perfect but too many major problems made me think at 103,000 miles about upgrading to the latest 2016 LR4 I could find however lack of confidence in the LR3 and Land Rover generally led me to a used (but only 12,000 miles} 2016 Land Cruiser with full MFSH and I love it and drive with a renewed confidence - Toyota service is very good providing a 10,000 a year mile warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles at reasonable prices. • I've been saying the same thing about reliability for a while now. If the 2.7 doesn't snap a crank or spin a bearing (which you have a pretty low chance of doing) it's actually a really reliable engine - 330k on my MY08 and barely anything has gone wrong with the engine apart from usual things like water pump and the plastic crossover pipe on top of the engine. Hotter climates (Australia in my case) see that piece fail more often. I've also installed the upgraded oil pump as you have. There are other factors that cause failure in the 2.7 - the timing belt tensioner bolt is only torqued to 24nm but I've seen the results of mechanics actually using a rattle gun to do them up - snapped bolt 500km later. Also the oil filter comes out with the housing cap, but if you install it back the same way you will destroy the engine as you are not locating the bypass in the filter housing as required. I specifically bought the 2.7 as in Australia we have the Ford Territory SUV that uses the Land Rover single turbo version of the 2.7 Lion diesel. Can buy a wrecked one with low KM for a pittance. That was my hedge.

He always felt like it was about to stall or just not go quick enough out of junctions or islands and he lost confidence in it even though he had it from new. Lost a fortune on it when he sold it but he doesn't regret it. Great video and awesome rant. So glad you actually like LRs lol.

  • Love your videos guys, could listen to Christian all day. He reminds me of a slimmer version of the awesome mechanic in Transporter 3. Have had my D3 since new (build 2009), no signficant mechanical showstoppers thus far, still going very nicely with 309km on the clock! Changing out the electronic handbrake module in a few weeks, will cost about A$1,700 for the part, and ~$700 for the labour. Happy to hear any alternative thoughts on that scenario. Like how you've maxmised the sunshine in your D4 with 3 roof windows!

  • Once again a great video informative and entertaining as usual on this channel. If I can understand Christian's view, I am glad that this episode came after I purchased my LR4 because I would not trade it for a LR3 despite some of the technical or design flaws that Christian mentioned. Since July, I took 2 long trips clocking more than 20K Km driving across Europe, sleeping in it. Unlike Christian, I love the smooth automatic 8 gearbox, the silence on board, the slicker interior design. The only wish would be to have an engine that would consume less than the actual TDV6 as the price of the diesel really gets high. I do in average 11.5L/100 km. How about Vera with her LR3 Manual?

    • I do too with my rooftoptent on right now. Also the snorkel caused an increase in diesel consumption. Not everything Christian says should be taken too seriously, for anyone who already owns a LR 4😃 . • Hello Leslie, replacing the drive belt is easy but I made a special wrench for holding the pulley wheel of the cooling fan. You can buy this wrench also for 30 Euro. See our video here: kzhead.info/sun/i82Sh7WigYyfgGw/bejne.html @ Minute 20. The thread is LH! It can be really stuck badly if it was never open before. Also check out this video from Outback Discovery: kzhead.info/sun/echrZc9wqYZup4E/bejne.html Also apply anti seaze to the thread. I don´t think the belt is slipping. You would hear that badly. Check the charge voltage of your alternator using a OBDII tool. It should be above 14.5 Volts at all times. Check the ground connection to the engine (near right hand engine mount) and the alternator terminal as well as the battery terminals. All must be free of corrosion and thight. Battery must be above 12.5V before start or it is not optimal. The brushes of the alternator are replacable. See this video here: kzhead.info/sun/ZMNmfNtpe2t7lH0/bejne.html Towards the end. Its german but you will get the point. Christian

However, the 4.4 V8 in the LR3 does not have the timing chain problems of the 5.0 LR4, so the LR3 4.4 V8 is better. Also I've read it is a bit smoother. I totally agree with you that the LR3 looks better. It's a cleaner look as opposed to the bling look of the 4.

  • Brilliant, and I agree so much. Simple is better in the long run. Don’t forget also it is almost guaranteed the 3.0 will crack the intake manifolds which never occurs on the 2.7. An expensive repair. Point 6 you missed is the stock wheels are 18”. For off road and sand driving this is much better with better tyre choice. 19” inch is a backwards step for the D4 and now here in Australia owners buy aftermarket 18” solutions. Crazy. In city driving the brakes of the D3 are perfectly ok. Point 7 - the lower spec SE of the the D3 is perfect simple and stylish without the bling extras of D4 which is like a RRS. The centre console design is more practical in the simple version. Point 8 - unpainted black wheel arches, look better and are more appropriate for off road. Point 9 - the 2.7 has an oil dipstick

    @richardwilliams8667@richardwilliams86672 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks, I agree. I forgot about the 19“ rims. They make the tires to hard even for on road driving. The no-dipstick issue was serious for us as shown a view videos back. You scare me about the intake manifolds. My D4 leaks oil in the area of the Upper Right Hand cylinder where the tandem pump is mounted. So this could be the valve cover 😳😳😩😩? Body color Painted arches suck. I got them. Mall crawler look. Advantage is, they can be coated easily. Thanks. Christian

I would say the option for a manual gear box is also a big advantage for some in the D3, as well as the D3 being cheaper so you are less bothered about where you park it and if you accidentally scratch it. I like your point about the D3 being cooler because it is older :). Mine has 189k (miles) on the clock and my aim is to get at least 200k from it, if not more.

  • Guten Tag aus Australien. Great review of the Disco 4 Christian compared to the Disco 3. You bring up some very thoughtful points. Vera, many thanks for the editing, I love the smilies, they are so appropriate. I can confirm the HP6 with the Diesel has a great launch, from standing however, it is not so much soft as you consider the D4, but lazy. There are two grievences I have with the setup of the D3 though, from a loving point of view. 1 - It hates dropping from 3rd to 2nd, hence lazy, so at roundabouts, give ways and such, where you can maintain about 15 - 20 km/h, it will not kick down to second until you really floor it or it just plugs along in third slowly, painfully getting back up to speed. Using the sport/manual mode fixes this, but in auto mode it is annoying. 2 - When you go to take off, but for whatever reason you then have to back off and stop, when you accelerate again the whole car just sort of sits there and wait, almost as if it is making sure you really want to go, for full seconds before accelerating. I think this issue is more with the traction control, but again at roundabouts if you are the second car and you see your chance to go, this can border on dangerous if it "stalls" when you are trying to navitgate a busy intersection. Your comment about symbiosis and really a delight in your vehicle is very pertinent about Land Rover owners, I know there are always exceptions, but the Toyota owners I know don't have any desire to tinker or perform their own work on their vehicle. It seems to come with the territory of owning a Discovery or Defender that you tinker and learn, both through necessity and desire, to keep the vehicle running.

    @michaelashby809@michaelashby8092 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for your feedback. In my D4, I got honked so many times at intersections. I need a 100 meter gap In slow traffic to enter. In fast traffic, I need to scan the horizon with binoculars to see if someone is coming. Veras manual jumps in between cars if there are 10 meters space 😂😂😂. So I understand your statement of „lazy“ behavior. Christian

      @Vera_and_Christian@Vera_and_Christian2 жыл бұрын
  • Another great video Christian and Vera I have a D4, and was always shocked by the Land Rover reccommended service interval of 16000 miles. I change my oil every 3000 miles and the oil is already seriously deteriorated. It has already lost 10% of its viscosity and has picked up sufficient impurities to justify a change. The cause of the viscosity loss can certainly be debatable but it doesn't make it less serious I think this fact alone is sufficient to cast suspicion on the cause of the reported crankshaft failures. I would value your opinion.

    @dickbidgood7791@dickbidgood77912 жыл бұрын
    • Absolutely right, we think so too. Also with the intervals, we change it right now every 10000km, driving 99% on roads, and hardly any towing. We would go sooner, if the offroading or towing increases at any point. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera
