  • Namjoon/ RM is the groups main songwriter. He always writes his lyrics very poetically and metaphorically. The song is actually based on a poem about a man who is ugly and hides from the world. He sees a woman stealing flowers from his garden one day so he grows a flower specifically for her, but then she tragically dies. The lyrics reflect that.

  • Here’s the story behind this song : This heartbreaking story is about an ‘ugly’ man who has locked himself into an ancient castle to hide himself from the world because he had received a lot of cruelty while growing up. Therefore, he tried to hide from people. The only thing that he confided in and loved was to plant flowers in his garden that surrounded the castle. One day, a woman had trespassed into the garden and stolen a flower. The man was angry so he watched the garden from the castle all night. Unfortunately, when he slept the woman came again and stole another flower. Then after this happening for a few days, the man decided to fake his sleep and and watch the woman steal the flower. Without him knowing, he became more interested in the woman and began waiting for her to steal a flower every night. This was until he followed her one day to the small town and found out that she was selling the flowers from his garden to earn her living. He wanted to help the woman so much but was afraid that she wouldn’t like him because of his ‘ugly’ appearance. So he thought the only way he could help was to keep growing the flowers in his garden for her to steal and sell on. He decided that he wanted to create a flower that didn’t exist on the planet so that the woman could sell it for an expensive price. The Smeraldo flower. The man tried many times to make the flower and after many tries, he finally created the Smeraldo flower and filled his garden with it. But the woman stopped coming. He waited and waited but he found out she had died.

  • RM wrote this beautiful masterpiece. He always says he’s a poet first before anything💜 V is the one w the low voice, Jimin is the one who hit that high note, jungkook was the one doing the runs in the back, Jin is the one with beautiful falsetto. Now that you’ve heard the vocal line and the rap line, you’ll be able to see why BTS is such a powerhouse. Watch the guide by Taylor to learn their names and their position in the group. It’s such an underdog story and you will be able to see how humble and kind they are as well.

  • I’m so glad you said that Jimin is giving The Weeknd and MJ vibes! I find his recent solo work very much in the same vein as The Weeknd (though he considers Usher to be a big inspo!) and his vocals on BTS’s song “Danger” from 2014 are very MJ. V has such a lovely rich baritone and it’s so exciting when he uses that end of his range (like for this song, and the intros to “DNA” and “Don’t Leave Me”). But he’s so great in his higher range too! His live vocals for “Dynamite” really blow my mind because he nails it, and despite a key change! Jin has such a crystalline soaring voice, but he also has a classic boyish charm; I don’t know what else to call it. His upper range is wild - the adlibs on “Crystal Snow” and “Film out” the hook on “Come Back Home” and the outro of “Dionysus” are especially astounding. And of course, Jungkook. He’s just a vocal star. Not that the other vocals aren’t, of course, but he was designated BTS lead vocal before that kind of positioning didn’t really matter much for BTS anymore. His bridge on “ON” and “For Youth” really knock me on my ass every time. I really can’t wait for you to look at something like their NPR Tiny Desk or even the MTV Unplugged videos. When the seven of them are together, something really magical happens! Thanks for giving them a genuine ear 💜

For ex, if you start discovering one member you get addicted to that particular member until you listen to other member and experience the same effect😹(i have experienced this). In the end it would take a year or so to settle down with their voices and finding one or the other suits a particular genre so well. One is pop, one is baritone, one has a very unique vocal call, and one is born to sing ballads and trot. All the best with vocal line journey and don't get shock when you come to know that rapline sings heavenly as well😂😂 Edit: btw my fav vocal taste is jin, the one who does not only hit a high note but actually belts it, eats cds for breakfast, hit falsettos that touch that deep part of your heart and is also the Grammy acclaimed silver voice

His song is currently aiming for #1 on BB hot 100 next week and I think you’d really enjoy his album and performances. Another thing is his duality. His personality, vocals, style, dance, he can do everything soft and hard if you know what I mean. He’s super kind, he’s typically soft personality wise but you put him on stage and you won’t even know what your expecting. Just look up videos of him dancing it’s insane. And his duets with jungkook are also crazy. Their black swan performance during 2020 mama was insanely beautiful. And louder than bombs is crazy too for the whole group.

  • 💜FYI - this is how they conceptualised the song: They created a very old and sad story called, 'La Città di Smeraldo' that takes place in a small town in Italy ( in the 16th Century -1500's). The story's about an 'ugly' man who hid in an old castle alone, even though he was a gentle good person, because of his looks he received lots of hate & cruelty while growing up. He never opened his heart to anyone. Eventually if anyone tried to approach him, he hid in fear. So he became bitter and angry. His one happiness in life was to plant beautiful flowers in his walled off garden. One night a woman appeared near the man's castle. She jumped over the garden fence and stole a flower. This angered the man at first. So he watched his garden all night. But when he fell asleep, the woman took another flower. This continued for several nights. The man pretended to be asleep and watched the woman steal a flower. He started becoming curious about the woman. He began waiting for her. Without realizing he started waiting for her to come and each day began to seem a little brighter. Following after her one day he realized that she was selling the flowers that she stole from him to try to make a living. The man falling in love so desperately wanted to help the woman. But he was afraid she would be terrified by the way he looks if he approached her. He 'knew' she would never be able love his 'grotesque' appearance. He came to a conclusion that the only way he would be able to help her is to keep himself hidden and let her continue stealing flowers from his garden. The man decided to make a flower that doesn't exist on the planet. So that the woman could sell them at a expensive price. He began to create the flower in his castle. After many unsuccessful attempts, the man created the most beautiful of all flowers (The Smeraldo Flower) and filled his garden with these beautiful flowers. But the woman stopped coming. No matter how long he waited she never came back to his garden. He eventually found out that the woman had starved to death before he could give her the flower that would have saved her. If only he had been brave enough to approach her😭 You will see the Smeraldo flower references thoughout various MVs The Smeraldo flower symbolizes the sincerity that could not be delivered. The moral of the story, as interpreted by BTS, is that people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to a lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities. In addition, another aspect is the way people are affected by childhood trauma and dysfunctional families. The man was highly affected by his childhood trauma caused by nasty comments made by people. Song Lyrics English Trans: (credit - Doolset Bangtan Lyrics - best translations of all BTS songs) This garden where loneliness is in full bloom Covered with prickly thorns, I chained myself to this sandcastle What your name is, Whether you have anywhere to go, Oh could you tell me? I saw you hiding into this garden And I know that all your warmth is real The hand that picks a blue flower, I want to hold, but it’s my fate Don’t smile on me Light on me I can’t come closer to you I don’t have a name to be called by You know that I can’t Show you ME Give you ME I can’t show you my miserable self, so, yet again, I wear a mask and go to meet you But I still want you A flower that looks like you bloomed in the garden of loneliness I wanted to give it to you after taking off this foolish mask But I know that I can’t never ever do so that I have to hide myself because I’m ugly I’m afraid I’m miserable I’m so afraid Fearing that you, too, might leave me again in this end, yet again, I wear a mask and go to meet you But, all I can do is this, in this garden, in this world, after I make bloom a flower that looks like the beautiful you, to live as “I” that you know But I still want you But I still want you Perhaps, back then, by just a little, by just a bit, if I had taken courage and stood in front of you, would everything have been different now I’m crying at this sandcastle that is vanished, collapsed, and left alone, looking at the broken mask And I still want you But I still want you But I still want you And I still want you

Aoki steps out of his EDM space to present a glimmering piano ballad, while the vocalists each go beyond their limits to express a heartfelt attempt to conquer fear and self-loathing. The track ultimately expresses that accepting one's true self is the key to finding love.

  • Definitely, RM's hand in the lyrics. He is the poet through and through. This is a part of the whole album's concept of being able to start accepting yourself as you are so others can love you for who you are and not the pretend version of you. They very often use allegories. Whalien 52, for example, is about a lonely whale who has a different frequency from others. I mean, come on! Who else sings about that?!! There is a song about Pluto ("134340") losing its status as a planet and being sad about it as an allegory of losing someone's love. Honestly, these boys are something else!😂💜💜💜

  • And they all get all their clothes out and they pick what they want with accessories, and I'm guessing part of it was reflecting Jhope. There was a time when he felt self consious and ugly and used to wear a mask when going out. He even depicted that part of his live in their BTS cartoon, where he's a rabbit in a mask and it's later he was convinced to get rid of the mask and started loving himself, and look at him now. That's why he's the Sun in BTS, his aura is so bright and warm he makes everyone happy. When the boys are down they turn to him, when they need a hug the go to him, even when their tired they go to him to get some of his energy. The song is the most beautiful heart wrenching song I've ever heard. And the sad thing is could relate to some of it.

  • V started off then Jungkook aka JK took over, then Jin took over with the higher pitch falceto. The bridge was Jimin with the high pitched long notes, then JK again flowing into the harmony. The song is heart breaking, you want to express your love so badly but you don't feel worthy plus to make it worse you don't think they'll love you back. And I just looked it up to see if I was right. When BTS were asked about it, they interpreted it as "people are entrapped in the depths of misery and darkness due to the lack of self-love and confidence. The protagonist would have probably felt much better, had he talked to her and confronted his fears and insecurities"

  • The look on your face, just the sheer SURPRISE every time you heard V's deep-ass voice was just so goddamn funny, it never stops being entertaining. There really aren't a huge amount of barritone's in non-classical music, and from what I've seen in K-Pop if there's a baritone in the group they're almost always a rapper rather than a vocalist. But V's got a massive range, probably from keeping up with tenors his entire career, and he brings a very rich and warm vocal colour and really adds depth and contrast to every song. BTS really is unique in that each of their vocalists have incredibly different voices and skillsets-- V I've already ranted about but I can't help but add a little bit more, he's deep, soulful and captivating. He pulls a lot of inspiration from old-school jazz singers like Sinatra and Louis Armstrong and you can tell by the stylistic choices he makes with his voice. He growls like an absolute demon when the moment calls for it, but he also captures this soothing warmth and breathiness that envelopes you like a lullaby. He also has been known to dip into random genres like opera or trot that usually require specific training for a joke and pull it off far too well. Jin has a very distinctive tone, more on the nasal side which is how you can pick him out from the other vocalists, but he's also clear, powerful and tender. As a vocalist he's most prominently known for belting like a motherfucker-- really the only way to describe it, he has so much power in his voice and he pulls it off so confidently that it's easy to miss how difficult whatever he just did was. His falsetto and vibrato are absolutely ethereal and he really excels at conveying emotions while he's singing, BTS's most emotional and raw ballads tend to either. behis solo songs or at least feature him heavily. But he's still extremely versatile as a performer and especially suits rock music, he also has a gorgeous lower-range that we don't experience often but is an absolute treat. He's really stable as a vocalist, able to maintain perfect vocals while headbanging and can turn screaming into a flawless high note, his technique is brilliant and he received the nickname "silver voice" from Rolling Stone Magazinge and it's deserved. Jungkook is the main vocalist of BTS, he's been notoriously stable since debut even while performing the most intense choreography. He's an absolute maniac when it comes to riffs and adlibs which is one of the reasons why each time BTS perform a song live it's always different because he never does the same thing twice. His voice starts from a fairly neutral place which is one of his greatest strengths because it allows him to go in any direction he wants, adding different vocal effects and techniques to suit any genre, style or emotion. He's extremely versatile as a performer and seems to understand singing on an instinctive level, the other vocalists look to him for support when they're sick, are struggling with specific notes or for advice in general when it comes to singing. He sings the guides to almost every song before everyone records and even on songs he's not featured on he often is credited for hidden vocals that add to the fullness of a song, he also served as a rapper in the early years of BTS and now uses this skill to double the rappers which always sounds insane. Jimin is exceedingly unique and honestly hard to describe, there really aren't any other vocalists like him anywhere, his voice is high, clear and angellic-- the opposite end from V and yet absolutely serving the same role of providing contrast and depth, when he harmonises with or doubles any of the other members it always a magical moment that makes both of them shine. His falsetto high-notes are something you never get over, it gives you chills every time, his adlibs really show off the complexity of his voice. He also has a talent for using his voice to turn his stage presence on its head, he alternates between angellic and sweet to seductive and soulful, and on the occasions he decides to go for the full growl, all of Army view it as a personal attack on their sanity. Another key strength of his voice is it's androgeny, he expresses feminitiy and masculinity with ease and it's a powerful weapon in his arsenal that very few singers can match. I didn't mean to rant for this long but WHOOPS

  • This song is from the "Love Yourself" era and kind of emphasises the importance of loving yourself. The boys and their company drew reference from the story of Smeraldo, a variation of the Beauty and the Beast story. However, there is not a happy ending to this story. It represents an entangled love story surrounding the Smeraldo which is estimated to have taken place around the 15th-16th centuries in the city of “La Citta di smeraldo”. According to various sources, the story supposedly has a tragic ending filled with yearning, sadness and sincerity that could not be delivered. According to the story, there once lived a man. He lived in a secluded castle in La Città di Smeraldo. There is not much information about the man except that he was the ‘love child’ of the duke of Florence who fell in love with a poor gardener’s daughter. She passed away at childbirth due to excessive bleeding leaving the man alone in the world. Being a child born out of wedlock, he was the source of misery to the wife and children of the duke, who tried to kill the poor boy. As a result, the duke sent him to a place further away. There were many rumours, but none was revealed. It is said the man alone hid in solitude at the old castle and wore a mask because he was very ‘ugly’. Probably because of all the hatred and jealousy he received as he lived, he didn’t open his heart to anyone. When anyone tried to approach him, he would hide away in anger and distrust. He shut himself from the world. Both his body and his heart. His only joy was to grow flowers in his garden. It made him happy and peaceful. But things took a beautiful turn. A turn which would be a moment of beauty within the memories at the corner of his head. A turn that would leave a sorrowful scar his heart forever and bring in tears to his eyes. Fate was playing on him. One day, a girl appeared in front of him near the vicinity of his castle. She was in ragged clothes. As he watched, the girl picked up the heels off the garden fence, climbed over it, and stole some flowers. The man was mad as a hornet at first. He was mad at her for stealing his precious flowers. He spent his whole night guarding the flowers. But in his brief moment of sleep, the girl picked up some flowers and ran away. Several nights continued to pass like that until the man pretended to be asleep and watched the girl go. He was curious. Who was she? Why does she steal my blooming pretty flowers every night? Without realising it, the man waited for the girl and followed her one night. He disguised himself with a cloak and followed her. After following her to a village, he realised why she stole flowers in his garden every night. He found out that the girl sells these flowers because she is very poor and has no other way to provide a living for herself. He felt very bad for her. Guilt filled him up. The man wanted to help the girl. He wanted to teach her every method of growing flowers he knew. He wanted to teach her how to grow beautiful flowers. He was slowly falling in love with her. The man started growing many flowers for her and made sure they were of the best quality. He wanted to show up in front of her. Tell her of his feelings towards her. But, he knew he could not show up in front of her. She would be scared of him. He must hide. Because he was ugly. She would not love his ugly appearance. So he never got the courage to confront her At the end, the only thing he could do was to grow and take care of the flowers so that she would keep coming to his garden. With time, he decided to himself that he would grow the most expensive flower (the Smeraldo) for her to sell. That was the only way he would unveil his sincerity to her. He locked himself in the castle. After many attempts, he succeeded in making the flower. The flower was very beautiful. It was something that never existed in the world. Afterward, he filled his garden with the flower and waited till nightfall for the girl to return. He waited and waited for the girl to come back to the garden to steal the flower. But the girl did not return. She was nowhere to be seen. No matter how much he waited, the girl wouldn’t return to his garden. It made him anxious. He later visited the village he had followed her to before. He was afraid. Afraid that she would leave him in the end. So he decided to wear a mask and go to see her. Unfortunately, he found out that the girl had died. Thus the flower language of the Smeraldo is as such: ‘non-potevo dire la verità’ or ‘the truth that could not be told’, which is also the title of the song. The story teaches us much more than just heartbreak. It teaches so much about being scared to show your true self. Because of his low self-esteem, the "Beast" didn't show himself to the girl and, instead, decided to try and create a new flower for her. If he hadn't been so convinced that she would reject him that he never actually approached her, then he might have been able to help her and prevented her death. It i the "truth untold" because he never told her how he felt about her. All of this, just to encourage people to love themselves. BTS along with Steve Aoki produced this song from the viewpoint of the “beast” in the story. The song touches various emotional components revealing the untold sincerity of the man. It taps into the sorrow in a vulnerable approach. “The Truth Untold” is the second collaboration between Aoki and the Korean boy band. It follows his remix of BTS’ “Mic Drop.”

  • RM is the poet! He says his first dream was to become a poet before he wanted to become a rapper. His lyrics are always like an onion - layered, filled to the brim with hidden meanings, wordplay, references to books, philosophers, contemporary art. RM is an art connoisseur, constantly visits museums and reads. He's extremely intelligent and extremely well-read, and as a result his lyrics are rich and meaningful. :) I really really recommend RM's album 'Indigo' as a tick to the 'to react' list in the future. It's his first solo album that came out very recently, in December. 10 songs with an incredibly deep meaning and unique vibes, all different genres ranging from city pop to slow and acoustic. The two songs with MVs from it are 'Wildflower' and 'Still life', both incredible and ABSOLUTELY worth a watch. If you want a glimpse of RM's true unfiltered poetry, 'Wildflower' WILL blow your socks off. It tells the story of his path and experience of becoming an idol. Love the reactions, man. You're such a genuine person. Keep it up!

  • This song is literally the most beautiful one… there’s so many emotions in it… and Jungkooks adlibs + high pitch and Jimins extra high pitch… when they come together its magical !! You should listen to their solo songs too , euphoria , serendipity, Epiphany , singularity

  • RM, the leader of the group wrote this masterpiece! He is a genius with lyrics! The vocal line here is so strong with each member being showcased. The soulful voice you enjoyed is that of V (Kim Taehyung). His voice is so smokey and smooth…dude needs to sing some jazz or R&B, for real!! Another great reaction! Thanks for sharing!

  • RM is the poet of the group, period. For me, he really put the "rhyme and poetry" into rap. He's said many times that he started by wanting to be a poet before he wanted to be a rapper. But as many comments have already mentioned, this is based on a story. I'm really glad you did "The Truth Untold" and gave a proper listen to our vocal line. This song this so heartbreakingly beautiful, words are not enough to describe how much I love it. It is probably my favorite ballad EVER. In my opinion, "TTU" is like a cousin to "House of Cards" which you should definitely give a listen too. And if you love r&b you'll definitely love "Singularity", V's solo (the one you said has a strong voice) and his song "Stigma" also showcases his insane vocal range is kind of r&b-ish. Also, thank you for reacting to the live performance. BTS will ALWAYS sound better live, especially on this song. I'd choose this live version over the studio version any time.

  • These guys are so talented in so many ways.. you have merely scratched the surface of their talent.. their fame has been oncoming for 10 years.. they are not new. They have a huge catalog of music and tv content. In my opinion their huge popularity has come from their accessibility to their fans. While virtually all performers hide from their fans only to pop out at concerts or to promote records, etc. These guys from the beginning have used the magic of social media to chat and perform for fans. They also have produced some comedy skits, played games, taken trips together and pretty much allowed the fans to know exactly who they are and give access to their lives. They are genre'less, humble, kind, talented, handsome, charismatic artists. There is no group on this earth like them. As major worldwide award winners, they perform to sell out crowds of 10's of thousands of people of ALL ages, races, sexes and nationalities. (I think LA had 3 sellout nights at the SoFi Stadium). LA literally went purple for them, buildings, special events and on and on. They are moral human beings with a message worth listening to ... I'm a much older woman and I love their music. They have literally spoken at the UN General Assembly a couple of times as special ambassadors from S. Korea. Take a deep dive into their history. New subscriber for ya.. have fun!

He is responsible of recording 90% of the choruses and also do adlibs, hidden vocals, guides and backing vocals. He is credited for vocals on 80% of all BTS songs and on some of other members' songs. He can step in for another member if needed, he can easily adapt any genre, rapping aswell.

You gonna know when they became successful because if you keep an eye on their performances you cannot not know.... The more you earn the more they put in on their stage.... When i was watching their mma award performance of Fire ... I was like ' they put their money on the fire perfomance' bringing that fire to the stage , then it goes on... Bigger and bigger

  • BTS tell stories with their albums, not just their songs. Sometimes to really understand a song, it’s best to listen to them in order. You’ll see that Fake Love, Seesaw and, especially Epiphany come after this song. In The Truth Untold the person realizes they’re hiding behind a mask, but they still want to do it because they’re too afraid to lose the other person. In Fake Love they realize they can’t go on like that. It’s not real. In Seesaw they realize that their relationship is a seesaw, for one to be up the other needs to be down. In Epiphany they realize that they’re the ones they should love (Thus why the album series is Love Yourself).

  • 70 year old Army here. I just LOVE your reactions. You have a lot of presence yourself and are really fun to watch. This song was based on an old Italian folk tale. It was produced by the famous American DJ/producer Steve Aoki and it is co-written with RM, the leader of BTS and member of the rap line. Also, you should really react to J-hope's legendary and historic live performance at Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago last August. It was just a few days after he released "Jack in the Box". You will go crazy. I may never get over that performance and I have watched it at least 25-30 times. I will be there for your reaction as well as many other Armys. Thanks for a great reaction! 💜
