The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg eHybrid Steps Into The Spotlight
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its flagship SUV, the Touareg. Now entering its third generation, the 2024 Touareg brings updated styling, new technology features, and revised powertrain options including two new plug-in hybrid variants. We took a closer look at the Touareg eHybrid to see how VW’s sophisticated large SUV is evolving.
Fresh Look, Familiar Style
The 2024 Touareg gets a nip and tuck with redesigned front and rear ends. Up front, the prominent grille is now wider and illuminates brightly along a center strip. Flanking it are next-gen HD Matrix LED headlights, enabled by an incredible 38,000+ individual pixels, with three modules on each side lending high-tech style.
Around back, thin LED taillights run the width of the liftgate and incorporate illuminated VW badging - a first for the brand globally. These changes modernize the look while retaining the rugged presence midsize-plus SUV buyers want. Overall proportions and sculpted bodywork carry forward.
Tech & Connectivity Upgrades
The Touareg’s tech gets meaningful upgrades, notably the “Innovision Cockpit” with a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument display and 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This latest generation brings crisper graphics, better touch response, and newly standard wireless Apple/Android integration. Charging is faster too, with multiple USB-C ports at up to 45 watts.
Expanded advanced driver assistance features include highway assist capability up to speeds of 130mph. And Volkswagen’s useful trailer maneuvering and night vision systems carry over as well.
Plug-in Hybrid Power
The 2024 Touareg eHybrid model introduces Volkswagen’s second application of its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 hybrid powertrain, also found in the Porsche Cayenne eHybrid variants. Total output stands at a robust 375 horsepower and 516 lb-ft torque from the gas engine and 134 hp/295 lb-ft electric motor sandwiched between them.
All-wheel drive is standard, allowing 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 130 mph - not bad for a three-ton SUV. Electric range is improved substantially from the prior model at 31 miles per charge, enabling useful real-world EV commuting capability. Charging the 14 kWh battery pack takes about eight hours on a home 240v outlet.
Preliminary European fuel figures land at 2.7-2.5 L/100km on the very generous WLTP cycle, translating to 70-85 MPGe. Combined with 31 miles electric range that positions the Touareg eHybrid as among the most efficient options in its large hybrid SUV segment.
Luxe & Refinement Reign Supreme
As VW’s flagship, luxury and refinement take top priority in the Touareg. The handsome cabin carries on with premium materials throughout and R-Line models add sporty flair like leather/Alcantara seats. Adjustable air suspension teams with all-wheel steering for enhanced ride comfort and handling poise.
Pricing is yet to be announced but expect the Touareg eHybrid to command a premium over combustion variants when launches get underway later this year, likely landing above $70,000 to start.
Though the US misses out for now, the 2024 VW Touareg eHybrid promises a compelling combination of green performance, dynamic driving, and first-class refinement for European premium midsize SUV shoppers. With its lineup quickly electrifying, an EV variant likely isn’t far behind to deliver efficient and eco-minded transportation in an upscale VW package stateside soon.
