Hermann Fegelein was born on the 30th of October 1906 in Ansbach, then part of the German Empire. Hermann Fegelein came into contact with Nazism thanks to his father who several times made his riding institute available to the SS as a meeting place. Nazi equestrian units also used his father’s training facilities and horses.
In August 1930 Fegelein joined the Nazi Party and the SA and in 1933 he joined the SS. The same year Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party came into power and Germany became a dictatorship.
The Second World War started on the 1st of September 1939 with the invasion of Poland. The campaign in Poland ended on the 6th of October with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of the country. Fegelein and his Death's-Head Horse Regiment, which he commanded, arrived in Poland shortly after.
In Poland, Fegelein and his unit took part in killing the civilians, mostly the Polish intelligentsia such as teachers, priests, physicians, and other prominent members of Polish society.
These mass murder operations claimed the lives of 100,000 Poles.
The German invasion of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands started on the 10th of May 1940 and became known as the Battle of France.
Fegelein took part in the French Campaign and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class in December 1940. On Sunday, the 22nd of June 1941 started Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, and Hermann Fegelein and his unit were deployed on the Eastern Front. Because the horses were exhausted, the man were transported to the front combat zone in lorries and the horse-drawn artillery equipment was towed using any available vehicles.
Heinrich Himmler ordered Fegelein and his unit to kill partisans and later exterminate Jews in the area of Soviet Byelorussia and Ukraine.
From January 1944, Fegelein belonged to Hitler's headquarters staff to which he was assigned by Heinrich Himmler as his liaison officer and representative of the SS. On the 20th of July, 1944 when Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Hermann Fegelein was present at the Wolf's Lair headquarters. The Führer survived and Fegelein received a minor wound to his left thigh from the bomb explosion.
On the 3rd of June 1944 Fegelein married Gretl Braun who was one of the two sisters of Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler’s longtime companion and briefly his wife. Their wedding took place at the Mirabell Palace in Salzburg, far from the bombing and fighting, with Hitler, Himmler, and Martin Bormann as witnesses. Eva Braun made all the wedding arrangements.
In early 1945 the Third Reich was on the edge of collapse. On the 16th of January 1945, Adolf Hitler moved into the Führerbunker under the Reich Chancellery Garden and on the 21st of April 1945 the Soviet Red Army reached the outskirts of Berlin. It was clear that the war was lost. Because Fegelein had abandoned his post at the Führerbunker, Hitler sent for him. Fegelein was arrested and taken back to the Führerbunker. When Hitler found out about Himmler’s secret negotiations, he considered them a betrayal and ordered Himmler’s arrest and Fegelein to be stripped of all rank and court-martialed.
On the 29th of April, 1945, Fegelein, then 38 years old, was taken to the garden of the Reich Chancellery and was shot.

I am now seventy four years old, a Scot living in Australia for over forty years. I married a German girl, and although divorced for many years, we are still great friends and I believe always will be. Her father was Austrian, and her mother is Romanian. They both kind of......... Let's say denied that the holocaust ever happened. Years ago, I was shown photographs of part of the family that at that time I was married into. Some of the men were wearing Lederhosen, some were wearing SS Uniforms. The ladies were dressed in Deirndals. Anyway, that photograph just disappeared somehow over the years. I asked my ex wife if she knew what had happened to it. She did not...... Just over fourteen months ago, through ill health I entered an aged care facility. I could only bring so much with me. SS uniforms all featured a different eagle to the army which wore it on the right side of the chest, as can be seen on the background figure and vaguely discernible on the foreground figure. His insignia are, I think, consistent with that of an army sergeant or Feldwebel. The bars on the collar are also the army type. We should not forget that regular army - das Heer - units were also complicit and active participants in war crimes. The popular myth of the ‘Clean Wehrmacht’* is rot. * Wehrmacht is the collective name for the three armed services (das Heer, die Luftwaffe , die Kriegsmarine) of the Third Reich - it is not the name of the arm6 alone.

  • Thank you for calling Eva Braun Hitler's companion and not mistress. Too many documentaries and historians incorrectly called Eva Braun Hitler's mistress when in truth, Hitler was never married. In order for a woman to be a mistress, her lover has to be married. Hitler was a life long bachelor and was never married.

    • Recall the scene in Band of Brothers after a few hundred thousand Germans surrendered and are marching one way and the US Army the other. The Germans took over 600,000 horses with them into the Soviet Union. The US sent 300,000 2.5 ton trucks to the Soviet Union. The US also had 9 million servicemen it fed, clothed, and equipped. It also shipped millions of tons of material to the British. It also destroyed the Japanese navy operating in the Pacific. The Germans? In 1944 Eichmann said he was willing to spare a few Hungarian Jews for trucks. Demented lot, the Germans. Millions and millions of civilians murdered by them. Not enough German casualties in that war.

    • @@philipinchina Then I'll do one better: Look up Joseph Medicine Crow. (I'd post a link or two to his life story here, but KZhead would eat this comment immediately if I did that.) Joseph Medicine Crow was a Native American of the Crow tribe; he was also an American soldier on the European front during World War II. What he didn't know at the time was that, per the traditions of the Crow tribe, there were (and still are) four conditions which a Crow must fulfill in order to become a War Chief of their tribe: 1) You must touch an enemy without killing him. 2) You must take an enemy's weapon. 3) You must lead a successful war party. 4) You must steal an enemy's horse. And Medicine Crow accomplished all four of these requisites during his service in France and Germany. For #3, he successfully led a seven-man demolition team through enemy artillery fire to blast holes through the walls of the Siegfried Line, allowing the Allied forces to drive back the German defenses and advance. He achieved both #1 and #2 by running around a corner in a German-occupied village and slamming right into a young German soldier; the two got into a grapple, Medicine Crow quickly took the upper hand, got the German on the ground and was trying to strangle the German to death when the German cried for mercy, so Medicine Crow disarmed him, taking his rifle and letting him live before hurrying along to catch up with the American Army. And for #4, his unit came across a German officer's club with over 50 horses corralled outside, so Medicine Crow decided to lure the German officers outside into the open by mounting one of the horses, then leading all of the other horses out of the corral and gallopping away with all of the horses into the hills, where the Americans were waiting for the Germans to come running their way. And when the war ended and Medicine Crow went home to his reservation, he told his tribe's chiefs and elders everything he had done during the war. It was then that they told him that, in accomplishing all of those deeds, he had fulfilled the requisites to become a Crow War Chief. And in a ceremony soonafter, he was thusly honored with the title officially. So that's how Joseph Medicine Crow became the last of the Crow War Chiefs, and stealing over 50 horses - not just one - from the German Army was no small part of that. He had one hell of a life story. Google him up sometime. He's well worth a read!
