  • I guess another way to look at the 28-400 is that it’s the cheapest lightest 400mm Nikon Z lens. I imagine some photographers will find a use case for this lens so it will be interesting to see how well it sells especially at its price point.

  • The newly released Nikon 18-400mm lens certainly has its place for newbies as well as experienced photographers alike. This will make an excellent travel and walk around lens, especially for overseas travel, where weight and bulk is a consideration. This is exactly the lens that I would use for photographing marine life and whales on a boat where changing lenses is difficult. If we travel to Iceland next spring/summer, I will take my Z8, the 28-400mm, as well as my 17-28 2.8. Nikon's 24-200 is also an excellent travel lens, but it falls short for birds and wildlife

  • 28-400 not for me but when you think such a thing would probably have been considered impossible not too many years ago it’s great to see Nikon pushing the boundaries with it. Picking up my 135 Plena tomorrow, can’t wait to get my hands on that!

  • The 28-400mm lens seems perfect for me in *some* situations. When I'm out looking for birds with the 800mm f/6.3 on the Z9, I plan on using the 28-400 on the ZF as a catch-all for everything else. It's not going to replace my f/2.8 zooms, or the 400 f/4.5, but I'm not really interested in carrying those when I'm primarily working with the 800mm.

  • For me, I don't think this is a travel or even a holiday lens, for those I will stick with the 24-200 or 24-120 depending - as I prefer 24 to 28 most times. This would be great for less challenging hikes or days out. Also I think it would be particularly useful in the footwell/lap during a scenic drive. Compared to the 24-200 basically is a bigger lens that loses 24-28 and adds a 200-400F8.

  • I think the 28-300 on F mount was used by a lot of pros / enthusiasts as a walk around lens for personal use. Imagine this will be similar. Also think it’s no coincidence that it’s been about 2 years since the original Tamron G2 release on Sony (and the release of the Tamikon 28-75).. maybe Tamron agreed to wait 2 years before releasing this lens on Z mount?

  • Great to see you both again, I hope it continues, thanks for uploading this episode. On the Tamron lens, yes a weird decision on the surface, either they've gone crazy or Nikon have said it's open house on the Z mount. Time will tell. I personally will nearly always buy "camera brand lenses" especially if they're in a similar price range, more so with modern and mirrorless systems as firmware updates and compatibility are much more complex than in the past. Future proof your kit to some extent. Some fun cheapies, especially manual focus lenses, it doesn't matter. I'm also very curios about the image quality of the 28-400. I don't usually buy those sort of lenses purely from an image quality perspective, I mostly shoot primes or f2.8 or f4 lenses zooms. However, as I'm in my late sixties weight has become much more important and I'm looking for something not too big and at a reasonable weight as a long landscape lens for the mountains. My kit now for hikes is 14-24 S, 24-120 S and my old AF-P 70-300 E. That lens is still sharper than the Sigma and Tamron 100-400 choices and the nikkor 100-400S is just too heavy. So anything lightish with great image quality to fill 200-400 would be perfect, even at f8 if it's sharp, or any other suggestions you could make would be welcome. 😊

  • The 28-400 is not for me at this point. I also gave up waiting for the Z6iii and bought the Z8. The Z9 didn't fit my hand and I didn't care for the Zf so I went to see the Z8. It fits my hand perfectly so I bought it. The Z6ii will be a fine backup body for travel.

  • Great to see you both! Even got to see Tilley!! Kon truly hope your trip was a great one. The 28-400 will be a great travel lens for people who want that extra reach. The updates for the Z6II I still think they could squeeze more out of those 2 senors. I thought they would have announced a camera release by now, but not yet. Has me wondering if they will wait till fall and release it like the Zf. It would have strong sales into the holiday season. The Tamron version 2 confused me when I heard that. Been enjoying the Zf though, but found out it don’t like extreme cold. It acted up on me. But in my view it is a amazing camera. Been carrying it every day since I got it. Have a great rest of the week both of you! 📷☕️

    @johnd5244@johnd5244Ай бұрын
    • You mean the two processors - I don't think they can, or they would've done so by now - the Z6II is almost 4 years old, and just a light refresh of the first gen, with the same processor x 2 (from 2018). I think at this point it's pretty clear the Expeed6 platform is done, and any cameras based upon it will just get minor bug fixes and compatibility updates. Likely even less so once the Z6 III eventually is released.

  • I’m curious to see Ricci Talks review this 28-400 as Irwin usually is very positive on every lens I’ve seen him review. Granted, most of the Z lenses are much better than the F mounts but Ricci seems more analytical vs Irwin’s approach. I appreciate a more hard data, screw the feelings approach. 😂 I agree with a lot that the Z9 version 5.0 isn’t much of an upgrade. The auto capture is nice but who’s leaving a $5,500 camera set up somewhere unattended?

    @speedbumpmedia9584@speedbumpmedia9584Ай бұрын
  • Also, when you consider that with the Z7 and up... you can drop down into DX and get extra length out of it without the need for a TC and still be around 20MP.

  • Great to see you both and hope you had a great time in the States Kon. I agree with you about the 28-75 and nearly fell off my chair when it was announced. I personally don’t see the problem and think market choice is more important. When you start out in photography it’s a minefield and very easy to get caught up with the hype and GAS is very much a thing. When I started it was cheaper for me to buy the much cheaper tamron f mount glass than native lenses and they also gave me stabilised primes which was useful on my D7200 and D750 at the time. It was only moving to mirrorless that made move to native and I’m very happy about that. However, that’s all come at a cost but Natacha and I are fortunate enough to be able to do it so that’s ok although it’s not for everyone and there has to be cheaper alternatives. I think anything that broadens the marketplace has to be good and I’m really interested to see how they compare. So good to see you both back you’ve been missed ❤

  • Nice chat, thanks guys! For me the superzoom is great for local walks where I may come across a distant deer and for scrambling up mountains where I’d like a shot of the adjacent peak. In both situations it’s preferable to be only carrying one lens. On the new Tamron release, I’d suggest that Tamron would be proud to show their new lens formula and as you said most Nikon owners will opt for the Nikon version, so this is less competition considering the similar prices. Personally I see this as a marketing managers ideal test case...many users will have already bought the Nikon lens if they were going to, so it’s only newish users who will have the new choice.

  • I'm going to get the 28-400, as a general walk around lens I loved the 28-300, but as a travel kit with a 14-30 that's amazing flexibility. From 14 FX to 600 DX with 2 lenses is mindblowing. Throw the 50 1.8 into the mix and you're covered for low light/night. There are very few situations that you'll encounter on your trip that won't be covered. I was looking at a 24-200 but I think there's no point now.

    @xavidub@xavidub26 күн бұрын
  • I guess the 28-400 is the Z-mount FX semi-equivalent of the F-mount DX 18-300. A lot of us Nikon shooters lean very heavily on IQ but Nikon has for a long time done well out of the consumer market, with the 3xxx, 5xxx and even 7xxx DSLR series. Perhaps this lens hints that Nikon may commit to some lower cost consumer grade full frame mirrorless cameras in the not-too-distant future? It'd be nice, if so.

  • The Tamron 28-75 G2 is a better lens over the G1 for visible light; however, the G1 is better for infrared photography. I used them when I had a Sony system. The G2 is also programmable with a similar build like the 35-150.

  • I was going to get the 24-200 as an all around travel lens and then nikon dropped the 28-400. I like these lenses for when I’m going to a place and I have no idea what I’m going to photograph. Also with this focal range you do not need to carry anything else. For travel they are great. I just need to figure out which one I’m going to get now.

  • Kon it's a lens just for you. The next time your out shooting Tilley and she runs up on you and you have that shot and if she's out in the field and out there a way's you have her in tight also. People shooting kid's and some action the range is so valuable and with photo processing being what it is right now if you don't nail the shot out of camera you can always bring it back in post.

  • I hope you'll review the Tamron Z 28-400mm. It`s an intriguing range, but in an APSC camera this can go up to 600mm, wich is a lot... About the Tamron 28-75 it seems that solves some of the shortcomings of the version one (including Nikon Z 28-75mm). The reviews I saw of the Sony version, it keeps excellent central sharpness and improves considerably in the corners. It seems a better balanced and a true upgrade from version one. Hope that is comes closer to the Z 24-70mm f2.8, with less weight and much less cost. I'll be waiting for your review and comparison of this Tamron lens 🙂

    @kdikun@kdikunАй бұрын
  • I can see the appeal of the 28-400, and first tests seem to indicate the optical quality is better than expected. The f8 is too limiting for my tastes, so my "light" travel kit will remain the 24-120 + 100-400.

  • 28-400 is the perfect safari-lens for any one not doing safari-photography as a business. I would love to have it, and If I had one I would bring it on my next trip to Africa. But of course I would not leave my 400 F4.5 + TC14 at home. One camera would have the 28-400 and the other the 400+TC14. Then I would bring my 20 1.8 and 40 2.0 and maybe the 85 1.8 for low light and other kind of photography ...

  • I have a problem with these mirrorless lenses. F8 is unusable as far as autofocus is concerned. The camera manufacturers have gone lazy. They think that camera firmware will cover up the distortions and other flaws these lenses have. Its much cheaper than building a good lens in the first place. And as for 3rd party lenses, they may work, but the cameras automatic lens corrections won't work, so you end up spending hours fixing the images in post processing.
