Ok so a little bit of explaining before I get into this. The way loot chests work is that the loot inside is not generated until the chest is open, and you can see that because if you go into spectator mode you cannot open a chest whose loot was not generated yet. I was flying around in spectator mode and teleported to an ancient city, and in my excitement I started to try and open chests while still in spectator mode. All of them wouldn’t open because the loot couldn’t be generated because I was in spectator mode, all but one. There is one chest that never fails to spawn at the base of the portal structure, and in that chest there was a singular golden apple. That golden apple in that chest is generated when the structure is generated, so it’s definitely meant to be there for some purpose, but I couldn’t figure out why. Why do you guys think that apple is there?
Well there are also chests that contain multiple enchanted golden apples, so that’s another thing. Maybe the ancient builders decided to make these cities as a means of worshipping the warden and sculk blocks out of fear of getting on their bad side, while also trying to explore and discover more about them. It would also explain why these cities have naturally generated wool pathways. So they have a singular chest placed in front of a giant warden statue where they would place a golden apple as an offering of sorts for the warden. But this is just a wild guess.

The crossover I never expected, but fully welcome.
If you look at the skulk shrieker texture on top, you can see that there are two souls that look similar to the particles you leave behind when you run/walk on souls sand with soul speed. Plus with the skulk catalyst, when a mob dies near it, the particles that occur are the same. The skulk and warden most definitely have something involved with souls and probably even the soul sand valleys in the nether

Hi, watching these ik they are old but anyways the ancient cities were never covered with skulk but like you say after the builders left the warden returned to the home it knew the best and dug in then began growing to protect the whole city since one can’t do it all, and because they left the warden making him feel abandoned he is angry at anyone no matter the intent.
The Warden could be something spawned by the Skulk to act as it's protector, or, Warden.

Here's a detail, When you look at the Soul Shrieker, you'll see two souls twirling inside.. Also, if you kill any mob next to Sculk Catalyst ,or just the Sculk block, It grows more Sculk.
This would make a great theory.the ancient builders discovered skulk, messed around with it, and made the warden, which promptly killed them.
I lost it when Dream did his "small percentage of viewers" line. Also, I absolutely love the implication that Dream was just in the middle of a manhunt, saw MatPat, stopped to theorize about the Warden, and continued running for his life.

I just realized something: When you kill an evoker, they don't pop the totem, but when you kill it it drops it, so maybe the reason the illagers do raids is for souls that in turn are used for totems that would give them immortality. like this so matpat can see

Honestly I think they are both right. Hear me out… The iron golems are protectors right? Well, after the ancient builders left the villages in search of something more, they didn’t go alone, they brought some of their iron golem’s with them. Fast forward a bit and the wither has now been created, causing destruction as far as the eye can see. The builders escape into the ground creating strongholds and who better to protect these strongholds than the protectors they had with them. The iron golems stood guard waiting for their masters to return, but when they didn’t, they wondered off into the caves, and having no real way of making it back to the surface (since the stairwell of the strongholds were too narrow) the golems searched deeper into the dark caves eventually coming across the skulk biome. The golems stayed underground for a while and because of this became infested with this skulk. The skulk, for some reason made them stronger and so the wardens of these strongholds stayed underground only to be discovered years and years later, fully evolved into the monsters we know today as the Warden… So that’s my take on the story but I could definitely see it change based off the ancient cities in the new update. I have a huge theory about the warden and wanted to talk to the man of theories himself. the warden was built to guard the giant “portal” frame that we see in ancient city’s obvi BUT that means a fourth dimension. I recently watched a video discussing the white enderman myth and you here said that enderman where the ancient builders but eating chorus fruit , I thought what if there was a 3 race of builders that made the underground ancient city’s to hide from the wither and ended up building the warden for protection using the already found soul knowledge that they used to create the wither they built the warden to fight back against the wither but he wasn’t strong enough yet he was stone and bones ,but when they ran out of food from not being able to go to the surface they decided to build a portal out of a nearly indestructible block like obsidian and they traveled through to a new dimension a dimension full of skulk which then then used as a food and building material for the warden but then the skulk over took them and corrupted their city’s leaving them as little blocks that scream for help to the warden, you as the player seem to the warden as if you were from a different place which you are so that’s why he attacks you and he didn’t attack the ancient builders who now scream for help making it think you are harming them therefore attack you - And remember It’s just a theory A GAME THEORY!!! 😁

10:05 Actually it kinda does. As you guys said, warden means keeper or protector of humans or certain animals, and Iron Golems are protectors of villagers. The connection back to the end portal, however, might be how those same civilizations created Iron Golems and end portals, but it doesn't quite explain it as well as your theories did, hence the soul part.
I think that when the wither was created the builders built the stronghold to hide in and then they created the warden to guard it but then when the stronghold became too dangerous they fled to the end. Idk if this is already a theory from matpat or not.

here is an inconsistency I find: now, I know Minecraft isn't DnD, but it seems heavily inspired by it, thus, using dnd standards, evokers aren't actually evokers, evocation, by DnD standards, focuses on attack and damage, evocation spells in dnd include fireball, scorching ray, ray of frost, thunderclap, etc., evokers...don't do any of that, they SUMMON spirits and CONJURE spikes, so really an evoker is actually a conjurer

I have another idea for why they're called Wardens! They are found in ancient cities, the ancient builders may have created them as a form of protection for their citizens, however something went wrong, the Wardens turned on the ancient builders and the ancient builders had to flee, leaving the cities to the Wardens and going to the end, where the builders became the tall, dark, purple eyed endermen we know today.

I have 2 theory's 1: I think it was also once a iron golem that the ancient builders built then untill the sculk found it's way there to corrupt the iron golem to make the sculk spread.
He might be the warden of the deep dark cities like the iron golem in the villages. The underground civilizations went extinct:food/wither/went in the end.

If Minecraft Story Mode Was canon we could 100% confirm that ancient builders do legitimately exist. My evidence is mainly Jesses Enchanted flint and steel that he/she got from a ANCIENT TEMPLE THAT ALSO HAD A PORTAL TO A TOWN TO THE SKY
