Watch what happens when a friendly game of Skeeball quickly turns into a bet and the next thing we knew, we were lining up for an ultramarathon. Joined by our friends from up north (and my JMT partners from our epic 2020 through hike adventure), we tackled the Leona Divide 55K much of which runs along the Pacific Coast Trail.
As a rustbuster to kickstart my running season, the race presented both excitement and uncertainty. Little did I know, the twists and turns of this race would push me to my limits and beyond.
Experience the highs and lows of ultrarunning as I push through miles of beautiful terrain, fueled by the joy of the trails and the support of fellow runners. But as the race unfolds, unexpected challenges arise, including running out of water in the unforgiving final stretch. Hope you enjoy!

  • Just want to say "Thanks Billy". I will be running my first ever Ultramarathon in a few weeks in Germany, a 75K called "Rennsteiglauf". I got into running a few years ago and somehow stumbled across your channel. Since then I always had the goal of running this race as it is near my childhood home. You have always been a real motivation for me and running changed my life completely. So many thanks for that! I also am happy that you, as my favourite KZheadr, put out videos on a more regularly basis lately. 🙂

  • Way to grind out a finish, Billy. I recently DNF'd my last 50k. Back to back aid stations ran out of water (!) but I also shouldn't have taken just a handheld. I knew I'd regret it but for some reason did it anyway. My new rule: 1L min between aid stations.

  • Good job Billy 🎉 Im an endurance rider and my last 50 miler my water bottles fell out of my saddlepack on the first loop. I rode 14 miles without water. The first vet check and hold I tried to rehydrate. By the time I went out for my last loop I got super sick and was vomitting off my horse. I lost time and ended up galloping the last few miles to the finish. I was crying when we got into the timer. we finished and my horse passed all vet checks 🎉 she did better then I did and it was her first 50 😭

    @FarBear-by6rw@FarBear-by6rw21 күн бұрын
    • Congrats!! I’m an ultra runner who plans on riding endurance when my 3 year old is able. I’m hoping to both run and ride the VT 100. I always laugh that the standards of care for the horses are SO high during a race, (as they should be), while the riders can cross the finish puking and bleeding and severely dehydrated. 😂

      @Kelly_Ben@Kelly_Ben21 күн бұрын
    • @@Kelly_Ben in endurance riding you're caring for you and your horse and making sure they vet through, if things don't go well you get pulled. Fun fact Wendall Robe came up with the idea of a 100 mile endurance ride on the west coast when he visited the VT 100 race one year. He then dreamt up the tevis 100 mile ride.

      @FarBear-by6rw@FarBear-by6rw16 күн бұрын
    • @@FarBear-by6rw Yes, that’s why I said the horses have such a high standard of care, while the riders can be an absolute mess by the finish. I think it’s hysterical. I’ve run ultras where some runners collapse at the finish… no need to be considered “fit to continue”. I think your timeline might be a bit off though? The Tevis (Western States) was first run in 1955, but the VT 100 didn’t start for another 30 years.

      @Kelly_Ben@Kelly_Ben16 күн бұрын
    • @@Kelly_Ben oh I've seen somethings especially at tevis, horses in the treatment barn getting IVs who got completions. There is definitely nepotism. There's some history of the Western states videos here on KZhead where I heard the VT 100 thing. Guess is more myth then truth 😂
