Quentin Tarantino doesn’t just love movies, he loves music just as much. And he proves this love of music in every one of his movie soundtracks. Think of “Stuck in the Middle With You” from Reservoir Dogs, “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” from Pulp Fiction, or “Django” from Django Unchained. There are many ways to use movie music - but Quentin Tarantino defies expectations at every turn.
In this video essay, let’s look at Quentin Tarantino takes his movie soundtracks and crafts some of the most memorable scenes in movie history. Kill Bill, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Inglourious Basterds, The Hateful Eight - each film has a distinct musical identity but you know right away that these are Quentin Tarantino movie soundtracks. He doesn’t just pick pop songs for their own sake, Tarantino finds the rhythm and soul of each track and somehow pairs it with the perfect scene.
In fact, much of Quentin Tarantino’s movie music should not work at all - but it does. Whether it’s torturing a man to an upbeat groove, or splicing a David Bowie track over a WWII movie - Quentin Tarantino challenges his audience with his music and we love him all the more for it.

He has a good ear for music.
The man has a great and diverse taste for sure
He has one of the best ears ever for music in movies ! ❤️🔥
The music is exactly like his style, a scene is cool and calm *BOOM* gut punch
gut punch, needle drops, pure cinema!
@@StudioBinder yeah
The music playing at the end of Inglourious Basterds and the end credits is lit
perfect ending and shot 👌
Right !
by the meastero Ennio Morricone
might b my favorite ending to any movie
When the screen turn black and *"directed and writen by quentin tarantino"*
“Clowns to the left of me (police officer) jokers to the right (Mr. Orange aka the “rat”) stuck in the middle of you (being in between them). Brilliant. Literally listen to the entire song and it perfectly represents the scene and what’s at stake.
My favorite song choice Tarantino’s done is “Out of Time” during Sharon Tate’s last night in OUATIH. It works so well and adds so much melancholy to the narrative.
Mine are "Little green bag" from Reservoir dogs, "Son of a preacher man" Pulp Fiction, graveyard scene from Kill Bill 2, ending from Django, "There won't be many coming home" The hateful eight and both opening and ending from OUATIH. I guess "Treat her right" would be my favorite because I even dislike that song on its own but think it works great for the film.
In tune with the time period and perfectly in sync with the narrative!
Music in film is probably the most important thing besides dialogue
The beauty of cinema is seeing how it all comes together!
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are the best of the best when it comes to music selections. It’s unbelievable how well the music pairs with the dialogue and set. Hope you guys do a video on Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan.
It was so important to him to have "stuck in the middle with you" playing, he used up the biggest part of his music budget for this song. Thats why the rest of the soundtrack is relatively niche. But it works and its one of the most memorable scenes in his catalogue full of memorable scenes.
That's a fun trivia! A perfect example of a filmmaker balancing artistic choices with the logistics of filmmaking
By Breaking the Rules, Tarantino makes his Movies more Deeper and more Enthusiastic and Entertaining to Watch.
Yup, when done right, breaking the norms can greatly enhance the viewing experience
All QTs music to scene choices are great but the choices he made in Kill Bill 1&2 are next level .his finest movies to date .
Quentin Tarantino is a master filmmaker when it comes to using music. He uses it to enhance the story and tone of the scene, rather than just use for the sake of it.
Best song ever to be used by Tarantino: Chuck Berry's ' You never can tell'
Yes. I also love "Girl you'll be a woman soon." (PulpFic.) and "Stuck in the middle with you" (Res.Dogs, Torture Szene)
No, "deep hush"
@@nositadewi5705 which movie???
@@aadisharma4744 Once Upon A Time in Hollywood -- Sharon Tate driving to the Playboy Mansion. I've seen this film so many times, I can pin point when a song is used. I can probably do it to any Tarantino movie.
Nice choice! What makes it so good in your opinion?
Putting rick ross and 2pac/james brown songs in a western movie like django its amazing
Only Tarantino could think of it!
NGL I just rewatched Once Upon a Time and that documentary on him last night
Hope our video bookended your odyssey nicely!
I'll always remember it was one of the first few times I'd heard the song "Stuck in the Middle With You," and I mentioned off-hand that it sounded like something Tarantino would put in one of his films. (I had just watched a few of his films for the first time) and my friend looked over at me and said "well he does!"
Extremely well written and illuminating article. Some of this information I had read before or seen in interviews, but THAT Charles Manson song - I DID NOT KNOW! That is spine-chilling use of music and song in a scene. I think it's easy to say Tarantino just picks his favourite music, but there is always a good reason why he does and the music is another reason why his films work so brilliantly as cinema. I'm always very jealous when he writes the music into the script as he is confident he will direct his own script and get the rights to use the music he wants.
One thing Tarantino never does though is cutting within a song.
Hmm that's an insightful observation - perhaps like his dialogue he feels that its too precious to be deviated from
@@StudioBinder My personal guess of his view: If you need to cut a song to fit your movie, that song isn't worth to include in the first place.
Think Mrs Robinson in OUATIH, in other scenes he cuts the music right as the action happens, almost as if to emphasize the silence after eh music, as well.
Yup because he often has characters listen to music in the actual film. Just as this video stated. Scorcese is a master at using pop music as the soundtrack. Which is brilliant as well.
I love when Tarantino’s music is anachronistic. But it’s also fantastic when it’s, for lack of a better term, culturally anachronistic, like that fight between The Bride and O-Ren. The last thing you would expect in a katana fight in a Japanese garden is flamenco music, but it works so well.
" I'll execute every motherfuckin last one of you " *Needle drop with title* That's the most badass title credits in any film!
Perfectly sets the mood for the entire film!
@@StudioBinder exactly!
You guys are the best, I just love Tarantino's musical direction, since your episode about the Tarantino's direction from the (director's chair) so really thank you!
Thank you for the kind words! Glad we could help 😀
I love his music choices.
We all do!
Best youtube channel ever, thank you.
Once I sued a company that fired me with no reason , on the way to the union I had in mind the soundtruck of Django unchained
"I like the way you die..."
Amazing ! This is why I subscribed !!!
Glad you enjoyed our video!
Lmao the foot close up cut with “let’s go” was funny af sly editor
Stuck in in the middle with you is still my fav
A modern classic for sure
Love your opener for directors who made that

Love these videos
We love making them! Thanks for watching!
I discovered this page very late. This page is cool. Better late than never.
Superb video
My favorite song from QT is "There wont be many coming home" by Roy Orbison from "The Hateful Eight"
Great choice! What was it about the scene and music that made it work so well for you?
@@StudioBinder It just feel so great, its so satisfying after the two characters had been through since the beginning, they finally resting and beat the real villain of the movie, and the song makes it more awesome!
The contradiction between the scene and the music playing draws our attention more towards the genius of tarantino
One of many great qualities we get to enjoy in his films
Good video, but you missed score of "The mountain" from "Secret Of the Sahara" used in the opening scene of "Inglorious Basterds" movie.
I enjoyed this illustration very much with all this music...
We loved putting it all together!
Wowww, most awaited content
Hope you liked it!
I love your videos!
We appreciate it! Glad you're enjoying the content :)
When you go to see a Tarantino movies in the cinema it’s the same experience as when you go to hear a gig!
Also show the direction styles of David Lean and Francis Ford Copolla the two master storytellers.
What’s the song played towards the end of this video? I think that will be a great needle drop
Scorseses music taste is awesome too
Tarantino, apart from being a good screenwriter, has a good ear for the music, and that's why his movies's soundtracks are truly incredible. I'm saying it because of the scene where Michael Madsen dances, whereas listening to the song "Stuck in the middle with you", what an unforgettable scene.
Great channel
Thanks for watching!
Does any of this apply to The Hateful Eight? Because I can think of any such scenes there, and now I can't recall any being used here either.
Django unchained bgm is the epic bgm
It should feel jarring but it works so perfectly
"I know how good it is"
How good is it?
That 'silent night' scene from The hateful eight
But wasn’t the original choice for the Reservoir Dogs ear scene My Sharona?
For the next directing styles can you check out Damien Chazelle
Thanks for the suggestion! He's definitely a great option
Jungle Julia jukebox dance in Death Proof!!! One of a kind scene.
Great choice!
I love this.
When I heard 2Pac in that shoot out scene in Django it ignited my soul.
Only Tarantino could have thought of putting that scene and song together
@@StudioBinder The Rick Ross song is 🔥 too.
R.I.P. Ennio Morricone
Girl you'll be a woman soon sets a whole different atmosphere altogether🤩😘🤩😘And then comes Dont let me be misunderstood 😎uh masterpieces
Wes Anderson used the music from the film Sacco & Venzetti (without the Joan Baez vocals) right in the middle of a scene in "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou." I love the song and it didn't work for me because it was so distracting and so irrelevant. But I still respected Anderson for daring such a choice! I'm guessing he knew 99+ % of the audience would not be distracted because they would have no clue what the song was. What do you think?
The Sicilian scene in True Romance, Tarantino didn't direct it but in that scene as Dennis Hopper realizes he is going to be killed there is this extraordinary bit of music and I had to find it out: viens, mallika sous le dôme edais from lakme. Howard Blake??? wrote it...you all know what I'm referring to? kzhead.info/sun/lrSGndCtnJ6YpYU/bejne.html Hopper says "Can I have one of those Chesterfields now?"
That's an interesting trivia! Didn't know who the artist of that song was
make a video on Janusz Kaminski cinematography too
Ennico Moriccone RIP
Hold tight is a top tier QT choice...
Agreed! What do you like about that needle drop?
awesome
RIP Ennio Morricone
2:25 the reservoir dogs's song please
Pitching in songs are hardest
Requires a certain type of instincts for sure
@@StudioBinder well I am from India so we can't live without songs in movies. Therefore it is always wonderful seeing Tarantino's movies.
Great
When I was little I would blast mr.bluesky whilst playing happy wheels 🤣
That's a good time 😂
His movies are jam
Iive your life as if it was written and directed by quentin tarantino.
No... or else you'll go to jail...
That is one dangerous life
my friend loved that quote.... til he died by a paper cut
i got chills when i first know that song was written by Manson, goddamn that was fucking creepy
The Rap song from Django Unchained made me laugh.
A modern classic of a scene 👌
@@StudioBinder Like always brilliantly put in the scene.
John Travolta and the two dancers
Reservoir dogs last title track song
👌 What did you like about how the song was used?
"Why Quentin Tarantino's Music Defies All Expectations?" That is highly debatable statement and it frames the narrative of your choosing, rather than analyzing the actual soundtrack and its uses. The headline is the equivalent of.... why everything you know about Quentin Tarantino is wrong?
Precisely
Tarantino is known for subversive music soundtracks and our video essay makes a thesis regarding it and provides the appropriate analysis. It's not a statement of fact, the purpose of essays, video or written, is to make an educated but arguable point and promote discussion
@@StudioBinder While I would agree with the purpose of essay, I would not agree with the purpose of the headline for the video. It sets the rules before it even begins, trying to be provocative rather then honest. And in the world of click baits, you will excuse me if my fuse is a bit short. Here is a suggested title for the video. "Essay on how Quentin Tarantino uses music in his films". If you wrote it like that. I would find nothing really to complain about. But when you write "Why Quentin Tarantino's Music Defies All Expectations?" you are treading in click bait territory. Regardless if that was your intention or not, you must have known the reaction it will provoke or you would not write it like that. And so I agree with your statement on purpose of essay but I do not agree with the purpose of the headline. How about in the world of click baits one actually let the video speak for itself. That would impress me.
Its called the needle drop
Correct!
Hey studiobinder today I want to ask you a personal question only, but first of all , this lesson was awesome, thanks for it. So my question is that; DO YOU BELIEVE THAT NEPOTISM IN MOVIE INDUSTRY IS RIGHT? I am asking this because our Beautifully corrupted BOLLYWOOD industry only supports stars kids, Because of which an extremely talented actor who was from a small Town murdered by them just few days ago. His name was SUSHANT SINGH RAJPUT.
When Taylor Swift was 14, her father relocated to Merrill Lynch’s Nashville office as a wealthy investment banker to help Taylor break into country music. As a sophomore in high school, she got a convertible Lexus. Around the same time, her dad bought a piece of Big Machine, the label to which Swift signed. So having a rich dad or famous mom definitely earns you a head start. That's one.
It's certainly unfair - but one thing about filmmaking is that it's an imperfect but effective equalizer. No amount of money will save you from making a boring film, your own ability will
*"Tarantino's Choice of Music". Right? (Tarantino is alot of things, but not a composer.) btw Shoutout to The 5 6 7 8's. ❤
QT is GOD.
The number of copyright claims this video will get
Lol fingers crossed
😍😍😍
Glad you enjoyed our video!
Easy Rider
Meh, everyone who grew up on Kubrick began using ironic pop cues just like him. Scorsese, Linklater, Fincher (SocNetwork end credits! hahah) . Not really that original.
"Meh". That's you begin a statement? Lol
QT's least successful film - Death Proof - also had the weakest soundtrack.
Makes sense - if a quality a filmmaker is famous for isn't as well developed in a film, then that film naturally suffers proportionately
Completely disagree, loved Death Proof and music too.
What's up with his foot fetish?
Not sure, that's a video essay we're not ready for 😂
You used "Tarantino uses ____ as much as anyone" as a transition twice in a row. C'mon guys you're a channel about writing, you couldn't give the script the old once over before recording.
Thank you for the feedback! We are always checking over our content and trying to improve :)
Its not his music. He just picks out songs he likes. This requires no musical knowledge. He is so over rated.
Interesting comment. In what way in Tarantino over-rated? Which filmmakers use music in better ways for you?
"Musical knowledge"?
Really? No knowledge at all you say? Jesus 🤦🤦🤦.
