  • SPOILERRR..... . At the beginning I never expected Patroclus to be such a central figure in the story, I thought Achilles was the "hero". The way the story progressed and how Patroclus was the best among the meridians in the prophecy is so poetic because he didn't have any great strengths other than being a good person and not wanting to inflict pain on others. And the most heart breaking part was how his spirit was left wandering for so long because he deserved so much better.

  • spoiler: nobody ever talks about how thetis said "the best of the myrmidons will die" and the whole time they meant Patroclus :( he really was the glue. For Achilles, Breises, the soldiers when he was performing medicine. Throughout the whole book, he was stated to be the one that was never good at anything, always in the shadow of someone else. His own father treated him as such, but he really was so much more. Maybe he wasn't born to be the best fighter but he was the best at everything else:(

  • Spoiler : I think when Chiron is talking to Achilles and Patroclus about how Heracles went mad and Patroclus thinks to himself "i would know it in the dark, or disguise, i told myself. i would know it even in madness" ~ referring to Achilles' face, it probably could be a foreshadowing of the future, in the afterlife. Achilles' soul had reached the underworld first and Patroclus hadn't found his peace until his name was carved next to Achilles' and then he found him in the darkness and reached out for him.

But for me it was definitely about the journey not the destination. Also one thing about this book I appreciate is eventually achilles and patrocles win. After all the shit they put up with in life and even death they eventually have each other. They won. And knowing how neoptolemus and agamemnon turn out they also get their justice. Kinda makes the story less sad for me. Really bitter sweet.

They seemed to come through me, not from me, as though spoken straight from a god's mouth." - changed my mind. Because of Achilles and Patroclus' love they kept avoiding the prophecy to have more time together on Earth. So eventually the god's just made Achilles kill Hector the only way they knew how- by killing Patroclus first. It's like the god's put those words in their mouths and thoughts in their minds.

He was so cold and didn't allow anyone in his life. But when Patroclus came, he became a totally new person with warmth and love. I guess Achilles's son was just Achilles but without Partroclus. So, maybe if Patroclus wasn't there with Achilles he would have faced the same ending as his son. In the book it was always like Partroclus was nothing without Achilles, but actually it was the same way around. Without Patroclus Achilles was not the person he was. I sobbed when I got this pov😭. They are end game😢😭. We just need to find our Achilles or Patroclus within this lifetime which is very difficult 🥲 I just finished this book yesterday and now I feel like a totally different person. Now I've found Achilles come down song and its on loop. *I'm not sobbing* *I am not the person who I was before reading this book*

  • SPOILERS: (mini rant) honestly I’m just so disappointed in Achilles’s character development. He really became an ingrate asshole who became self obsessed and didn’t see the amazing person who loved him to the moon and back. Patroclus loved him much so that he fucking fought and DIED for his honor and his people (despite literally not knowing how to fight) after he begged on his fucking knees for Achille’s help (who was cruel enough to put pride before his own lover’s begging). Even in his last moments Patroclus didn’t want to be killed for ACHILLE’S FUCKING SAKE, not his, bc he’s know the prophecy would become true! And in the afterlife, Achille is still all he cares about, despite the last 10 years being Achille putting himself first and Patroclus always and forever loving him like he had since they were 10 years old and cherishing who he once was.

Achilles' character development was definitely questionable, but what they had was true love. The kind of love most writers struggle to portray. Madeline Miller did a great job with this book and I wish I could read it again for the first time. I read it at school and recited dialogue to my best friend all day long. We would laugh at the funny parts, cry during the sad parts and get excited at the parts in which Achilles and Patroclus got intimate. • SPOILER They also said the best of their people will die in two years. And it wasn’t Achilles. I’m guessing it was Patroclus because he fought till the end and was so skillful on the field and helped fight for his people. I hope more people talk about this because it did not seem to be resolved or answered.

  • I'm a big greek mythology nerd so I knew the story before I read the book, but that didn't stop me from sobbing my heart out in the middle of the hallway when I finished.

  • See I loved this book so much and I was very hesitant about reading it and it took me about two weeks to read because I got busy. However the last night I was read the book I was like okay im going to finish this no matter what and let me just tell you this I cried as if someone I loved in real life had died right in front of me I cried so much that I drank five glasses of water in less then 5 minutes. I cried while reading the book than cried for about an hour after I read the book and then I cried while writing my book review in my journal and then I cried myself to sleep that night. The next day I was tired had bags under my eyes was dehydrated and I had to go to the gym around 9.30 so on the way my dads like how'd you sleep and I was telling him about the book and how I hadn't slept very well and I started crying again. He looked so scared because there I was crying about a book and these characters who weren't even real, and don't get me wrong I cry in books normally but not like I cried in this one and it absolutely destroyed me. Anyways it was a great book 1000/10 recommend
