There's one thing I love about the birds that I think sets it apart from all other disaster movies. It is how the movie doesn't bother explaining why the disaster is happening, as none of the characters are experts on birds, nor know anything about the situation. It effectively puts you in the shoes of someone experiencing such an apocalyptic disaster, without a clue of what is going on, and that makes the experience much more terrifying.
Twister was the first natural disaster movie I've ever seen and I still love it. 2012 had me scared and paranoid asf though lol
Doodlebob that movie was a joke
Try watching it and have it finish just as a storm fires up
@@wifine1951 Totally why it's #1 on this list and it's still played on TV till this day

I wore out five vhs tapes of twister and as for 2012 the Yellowstone eruption scene an earthquake had to pull an prank on us I fainted out cold the cat filled the litter box the dog hinds under the trashcan lid and the neighbors called apartment security because they heard yelling
Dante's Peak has incredible special effects that have aged beautifully, and Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton give good performances. Very underrated movie.
I own it.
I haven’t heard anyone talk about that movie in years...
You're right, it's much better than that garbage "Volcano" movie that came out the same year. What was the premise of it, Marshal Gerard goes to Hell!? Even critics called that one stupid. And Dante's Peak was much more relateable to Americans(Particularly in the Pacific Northwest) who could remember the Mount St. Helens disaster of 1980.
Agreed
Couldn't agree more with that sentiment.
I just watched there list on “Worst disaster movies” and I love it how San Andreas, 2012, The Core, and The day after Tomorrow we’re on both lists. One said they were not scary, and the other said they were super scary and realistic. Which one is it huh?

Poseidon isn't about the ship sinking, it's about it flipping upside down. We watch the survivors work their way to the bottom because it's now above water and they need to escape before it goes under.
That is sinking

And sinking too.
I don't remember which version I saw (although most likely the original), but I'm pretty sure it sank eventually.
Just like Ash and Cie did in the first season of Pokemon xD (First time a Gyarados appears!)
2012 was such a Powerful movie because it showed the human spirit and our ability to build and survive. It also had a lot of family power themes and the humility of human hope in times of terrible loss of faith. It also showed Black and Asian people in various character roles, and honestly: I love it for that. We need more Disaster films with themes of Love, Family, Hope, Reunion and Diversity. We are not "one unified people" -- but we can be as one single culture in times of crisis, conflict and pain, those moments and periods when we Should work together as one.

Twister was definitely one of the greats, Thank you!!!
I agree with you.
The movie has shitty and dense characters. Ever noticed that? No because people ignored them and focused on special effects instead.
It also stars helen hunt, my 90's crush.
RisingVictor wrong. Most movies that tried to copy Twister are terrible and lacking what Twister had...
It's one of my favorite movies.
The Day After Tomorrow really shook me when it came out.
I watched it in my eighth grade science class and had nightmares and a fear of the world ending because the news that day had said of the Mayan calendar ending in a couple of days
Saw Twister for the first time when I was 8. I fell in love with the soundtrack and visual effects. Its still my go to movie 18 year later.

I still get urges to rewatch The Day After Tomorrow to this day, favorite disaster movie by far and I think it aged pretty well with the ominous warnings and consequences of climate change.
Hell yeah Twister! “Cow!”.... *moo*.... “Another cow” “I think that’s the same one.....”
Deep impact is definitely underrated Armageddon gets all the praises out of those two movies and I feel like deep impact should get more it's definitely underrated
Totally. The science with it was better and they got you to care about the characters more before they get wiped away.
Yea, I kinda shocked when *spoiler alert* the female main character didn't make it. You know, usually the main character is the one who survived (2012, The Day After Tomorrow, The Cote, and anything else). But not this one. Big applause to this movie.
i watched it today and cried
Not a single movie on this list was "scary" it's more like thrilling
That depends on how you define scary.
I was 8 when I saw Twister, it terrified me...right into a lifelong interest in tornadoes and storms. The movie really did give tornadoes the kind of tense pending terror that was comparable to some monster movies. If you were unaware of how powerful and destructive tornadoes were, this was an eye-opener, and I know some people who thought it to be more of a disaster-horror movie.
Your pfp is scary
THANK YOU!!! Twister is my all time favorite movie and you made it #1!!!!
The tornado scene from The Day After Tomorrow still haunts me to this day. Just the sight of the reporter getting mowed down by the billboard is just messed up.

I actually prefer Dante's Peak. They did better with the science. Though it is always fun to see LA get destroyed.
really good movie
I remember “Twister” back when I was a kid, the scene in which the cow was flying off, and a scene of an oil tanker truck coming out of a mega black tornado, always stuck to my memories
I think you read my mind with these movies, thanks
Honestly the disaster movie that left the biggest impact on me was The Impossible. It's also based on a true story that happened during Tsunami in Thailand. It wasn't as grand as some of the movies mentioned here but rather simplistic which is why it's so brilliant. I was horrified watching it because the camera work made you feel like you were in the water with these people. And the scariest thing was what the victims had to go through to get help and survive after the water stopped . Also I now realized that TOM HOLLAND played there as a young kid and his performance was outstanding.
San andreas got an earthquake because cj didn't follow the damn train!!!

I've been a fan of Twister since I was a year and a half old. My mom, dad, sister, grandmother and I all went to see it in theaters and I still remember it... Even though when I was younger I believed the theater was being hit by a tornado lol. It has always been a favorite and for a while I wanted to be a storm chaser, but I'm deathly afraid of them in person lol.
Okay, this was a solid list.
so glad you included "Bølgen" (the wave) it was an amazing film! can't say much about the sequel "skjelvet" (the quake) was good but doesn't hold a candle to Bølgen
Have both disks, so I would say that the special effects on "the Quake" are great, both movies ("The Wave") were amazingly equal.
I love those movies.
Twister is my go to movie for when there's a thunderstorm outside
I saw Twister in the theater when it came out. I was 9. I fell in love and became fascinated with Tornadoes after that. Damn good movie.
“Only The Brave” was a great movie. Sad that really happened to those men, a fire storm all around you.

Love almost all of these movies Rewatched 2012 last night
I shit you not; I have watched Twister so many times in my life that I know each line word-for-word by heart. Not even ashamed by it.
I remember Twister. I was born in Kazakhstan and back then in the childhood we had hollywood movies shown in local channels with russian translation. I remember the advertisement of the upcoming Twister showing and it was so scary that curiousity took me over. In Kazakhstan the tornadoes and twisters are impossible with the local climate, and the movie like Twister was really scaring all the shit from me as the kid, because it was shocking to realize that in other side of the world something like twisters and tornadoes are real and happen sometimes. I even had a nighmares after watching Twister
I was 8 when I saw Twister and it terrified me too...right into me forever following and wanting to chase tornadoes and storms. From a distance, they are quite mesmerizing to watch, but when they're bearing down on you, you're scared for your life.
“I Have Goosebumps People” - Charlie 2012
Damn, now this was a good list. I might swap a few around but just about every movie here I thoroughly enjoy. Also definitely agree that the 1st poseidon has a much better sequence of events than the remake.
Top five for me: 5: the wave 4: I am legend 3: Independence Day 2: deep impact 1: twister I count I am legend because it’s a great take on the novel and it’s terrrifying that take on the end of humanity. Twister wins because it’s so frightening and yet inspires people to learn about the weather
But independence day isn't a natural disaster movie. And I am legend is man made.
Pompeii was highly underrated. It didn't pull any punches and the ending was beautifully terrifying. My personal favorite Paul W.S. Anderson film.
Honestly I think the core was the most interesting of the films because I loved the premise and found it very creative. Despite the silliness. I would say the Day After Tomorrow is my favorite because despite the craziness it is something that is possible.
