I have been breeding dogs for 25 yrs, this is how I remove dewclaws, or you can take them to the vet who does the same procedure. I have seen too many dogs have groomers shave off their dewclaws on accident or dogs get their dewclaw caught later in life and suffer from ripping it off and needing a $2000+emergency surgery which could've been avoided if more breeders did this quick procedure that they will never remember.

*READ* -"Based on stop-action photographs, veterinarian M. Christine Zink of Johns Hopkins University believes that the entire front foot, including the dewclaws, contacts the ground while running. *During running, the dewclaw digs into the ground preventing twisting or torque on the rest of the leg.* Several tendons connect the front dewclaw to muscles in the lower leg, further demonstrating the front dewclaws' functionality. *There are indications that dogs without dewclaws have more foot injuries and are more prone to arthritis.* Zink recommends "for working dogs it is best for the dewclaws not to be amputated. If the dewclaw does suffer a traumatic injury, the problem can be dealt with at that time, including amputation if needed." Dew claw injuries are exceedingly rare if the nail is kept properly trimmed, along with all the other nails, if you are a responsible owner. Don't do this, you are robbing the dog of a functional piece of anatomy based on tradition and exaggerated half-truths. The vast majority of dogs, including active working breeds, have their dews and never see a problem.
It is not true . I have owned several dogs with and without their dewclaws and the only thing dew claws are used for in dogs is catching prey(wild dogs and hunting dogs only) and breeding gripping when they are in the lurch . Christian Zink of Johns Hopkins is an animal activist who puts aside actual science for bleeding heart nonsense and should be ignored by everyone ! Dewclaws become huge issues in breeds like basset hounds and removing them ensures they will not have problems with them when the claw quick becomes huge later in life and the claw starts growing into the animals arm on both ends . Deuclaws are unnecessary in domesticated dogs and it is good practice for your pet to have them removed .
jesusoftheapes or..... you could CLIP THE DOG’S NAILS OR TAKE THEM TO A GROOMER.
@@caracalcontinuum3118 I do clip the dog's nails but on a dewclaw that never ever touches the ground to drive the quick back the nail will continue to overgrow no matter how much you cut the tip ahead of the quick away . You do not know what you are talking about . No groomer in the world can stop a dew claw nail on a large breed dog from growing longer than can be managed . This is why breeders and vet recommend them removed . that and most large dog injuries to humans are made with these pointless toes . Then you’ve been doing it wrong because they absolutely should be removed
I remove them because a dog can get them hung on anything and be in pretty bad pain.
That’s not ok! I had a lab for 15 years with a dewclaw and it was never an issue, I trimmed it just like the other nails.
@T Vigil I think this depends if the claw is actually attached to the rest of the paw. All my dogs used to have their dew claws attached and never had a problem [just trimmed their nails and that's it], but my new puppy hasn't, so I am thinking of removing them in the future to prevent her from tearing them up.

You clearly have never seen a dog rip their dew claw off when they’re older. That’s disturbing. That’s pain. Dew claw serves 0 purpose.
Neal Wells so what if it serves 0 purpose? why does that give us the right to remove it? For looks/aesthetic? The appendix serves no purpose, should all human babies have it removed? Why didn’t she use anesthetic? Disgusting breeders who don’t care about the animal at all as a loving being, only for the maximum profit it can bring them.
I've never seen a vet do this procedure. They use the hemostat to hold it out away from the foot. Not to clamp it off wtf are you thinking then they use a sharp surgical scissors to quickly and cleaning cut the entire thing off and use surgical glue to close the wound. Your procedure is animal cruelty at its finest.
Vet student here. Hemostats are used to crush veins and arteries. Small ones, like in a new born puppy's claw, can close up in their own. This is a common procedure and was taught in my class.
Yes, puppies do have feeling in their toes, what many claim is they do not have memory retention and will forget about it. Yep, until time comes to trim their nails. Absolutely puppy have nerve endings in their toes if they didn't they wouldn't scream.
I'll up your "vet student" with 50 years of life experience.
At the time this procedure is done, the nerve endings in the puppies paws and claws are not fully developed yet. The worst they would get is a pinch. And dogs have no feelings in their claws as long as you do not cut the quick. Just like when you cut your own nails, if you cut too deep it will hurt. Also my dog never got his dewclaws removed and he freaks out over his nails getting trimmed. Correlation does not equal causation. And I'll up your 50 years "life experience" with my teachers' combined "life experience" which would probably be well into 200 years. Just because you've seen a plane longer than I have doesn't mean you'd know how to fly better than me. That being said I do understand that different places have different procedures when it comes to this sort of stuff. I personally only support dew claw removal if there is a higher chance of the dog sustaining major injuries with a dew claw being caught. This can depend on certain breeds, or certain jobs a dog may have. Other than that I would consider it cosmetic. And I do not support purely cosmetic surgeries for dogs, such as ear trimming or tail docking.
@turles terraria dude I assure you in my 51 yrs I've never witnessed such a crude procedure in a vets office, if I had they would be reported.
Aww his little cry :(
He got over it ! If you notice when it come off the pup was trying to mouth a nipple . It was not writhing in pain .
Broke my heart
I’m a vet and we tell as many people as possible.. please do NOT amputate the dew claws!!! As the dog gets older he/she will need them for extra traction and positioning when running, stopping or pivoting! In addition, dew claws are also connected to a joint in the leg and foot. When becoming an elderly dog and the dew claws are not attached there will be pain! For example, arthritis or mild limping in the dogs leg/foot!! So I highly encourage everyone to please leave the dew claws on and to only trim the nails when needed.
“Only trim the nails when needed” is an incorrect statement, especially coming from a vet. Dog claws should be trimmed every two weeks at the least. That frequency prevents overgrowth, which is another cause of joint pain. Hate to sound harsh, and I agree with the rest of your comment, but you should find a different way to phrase your last statement because many people have no clue when nail trims are “needed”. They should have a set schedule for maintenance so problems never have a chance to arise.
This is the cutest torture video I've ever seen! "Where are you hiding the drugs Costano?! Oh you don't wanna talk huh!?" *Snip*
"Its OK" ur cutting off the poor things fingers😢
Front dewclaws should be left because they really need them for traction. Back feet dewclaws are completely useless, get overgrown very fast, and many times are super loose and can easily get caught on things and be torn off so those should always be removed if the dog has them.
@@xradelox why not just keep them trimmed? “Doing it while they’re young” is no excuse. Just like circumcision on humans
The “doing it while they’re young” statement is as opposed to when they’re older and the bones and joints have set. If you remove them after that, then you cause actual joint pain and arthritis can set in later in life. When they’re this young, setting hasn’t occurred so you’re not touching the bone. I’d rather them be left but most people don’t know how or care to trim them, or they’re afraid. So they just let all the claws get overgrown. And the dewclaws are usually forgotten completely. I stand by my statement that back dewclaws should always be removed. Front ones should only be removed if the dog is young enough, although I’d rather people just do right by their animals and keep them trimmed. But most owners fall severely short in that way as well as in other grooming areas. They really shouldn’t be removed, but removing them on adults is way worse than on newborns.
@@xradelox I 100% agree but true is 2 of my dogs hate their nails being trimmed and bite, even after 5 years of doing them, but my other struggle are not really fazed but struggle won't keep still as dew claws are in such an awkward place to get the nail clippers to so on 2 of my dogs I use sand paper in real if I didn't have to do this thry would be happy and so would I so I am for professional removal in breeds that don't really need them

My dogs use their Dew claws when they're holding treats. It's very, very cruel to mutilate them like this puppy farmer has done. I'm pretty sure that this is completely wrong too but I'm not a vet.
I understand your concern for the puppy and I'm glad you care for animals. I'm taking Veterinary career classes and I promise you this isn't cruel. You'd be amazed at the amount of dogs that come into vet clinics with torn or injured dew claws. They usually need removed. The nail also grows really fast and long on dew claws and most pet owners are too scared to trim their dogs nails so it ends up embedding in the paw pad and becoming infected, resulting in SOOOO much more pain than this newborn puppy getting them removed. It's easy to do it at this age because the nerves aren't fully developed so it isn't as painful. It's just a littleness pinch. The only reason why he's crying is because it's not very comfortable. But I have a puppy in my class that screams worse than this when getting a bath, his eyes cleaned, and his ears cleaned and I'm not even hurting him at all. So don't worry my friend it's not cruel ❤️
Flannel_Is_The_Warmest_Color We'll have to agree to disagree there. I've had lots of dogs and never had a Dew Claw injured.
Dougie - Having a dog with dew claws and not getting injured is luck, it's not the majority. It's like the people who argue "wearing a seatbelt when driving isn't necessary! I wrecked my car at 100mph with no seatbelt and I walked away fine!"... Yes, there are many instances where people are lucky and don't get hurt when they didn't wear a seatbelt. BUT, there's 1000x that many that have received the bad end of not wasting a seatbelt, thereby showing that wearing one is statistically safer than not wearing one. Dew-claws aren't there from nature. They're a consequence of selective breeding (by humans) that have resulted in a very common deformity (known as dew claws) in many breeds. The purpose of dew claw removal, is to remove the overwhelmingly dangerous repercussions that a dog with dew-claws could face in its future (which, statistically, shows that the dog is much more likely to face an injury than not). However, dew-claws are usually only removed on rears (which are the most dangerous to a dog, due to the floppy and disconnected freedom of the claw, with no control by the dog whatsoever to prevent it from being caught on literally everything). Some other breeds (usually larger breeds, and some mid/small breeds that have been HEAVILY linebred to create their breed-type) in which the front dew-claws have become disconnected and floppy hazards through past selective breeding, are also better to be removed than not. It sucks, but it's realistically for the long term wellbeing of the dog. The day that you see a dog severely injure itself, and forever hinder its ability to run/walk right again, is the day you realize just how important removal for certain breeds really is. Tails, that's bullshit and shouldn't be happening, as it's banned virtually everywhere except the U.S. Docked tails USED TO serve a big purpose for dogs that were to be used in war, hunting, pulling butchers' carts, and other lines of work where the dog's tail posed a liability to getting the dog hurt badly and disabled. But, anymore, that's not really actually needed as technology and those past-time industries have advanced so much as to pose no risks, and those other working-purposes that once existed for dogs are now a rarity in advanced society and civilization. As per the dog's feeling it and being in pain: they barely feel it and they aren't in enduring pain. The dew claws are dis-attached as is from the foot structure as a whole (unlike the other toes which are fully embedded and fully connected in whole) and it's a quick "pinch" and done. The reason you do it so young is that you want to get it done prior to their nervous system being fully oxygenated enough to be developed to the point where they'd feel it just like their older-selves would. At that young, the cries are more out of desire of wanting to be comfy/get mommy to "comfy them up", rather than screaming bloody murder. If they were feeling it, you would not only hear them way louder, but they'd also be squealing well after the snip as it'd still be painful and you'd see them babying that foot/area and not using it as fully as the non-affected/non-touched feet and parts of their body they're using. But, you don't hear that nor see that. What you hear is a quick "yelp-my footbid being restricted and I'm scared I'm stuck!" and then once released or cuddled back up into a comfy position they go back to life as usual. hehe The biggest problem is that we, as humans, let our emotions and assumptions dictate our decisions. Whereas, if we cancelled out assumptions and took the time to learn the facts behind things like this, then people's reactions to seeing this kind of thing wouldn't be "OMG! ANIMOL CREWLTY!!!", the reaction would be, "Awwwww, look at the little fella whining to get comfy again, what a sweety!" and we wouldn't even be thinking about "OMG, HE'S BEING HURT AND IN PAIN" because we know that's not the case. *Tbe reason I'm putting this out there, is because I was guilty of using assumptions a lot when it came to things like this. When I would stand up to the "violent and cruel idiots", they'd look at me LIKE I'M the idiot, because they HAD done their homework and they knew they weren't causing anymore pain than that of a vaccination. This was all due to me using ASSUMPTIONS and not actually knowing the facts nor looking up the research and the truth. So, no one should feel bad for jumping the gun, we've all been there and done that. But, it just goes to show: not everything is what it APPEARS to be at face value; there's always more to it.
@@strikeforcek9149 dew claws are not unnatural or a deformity. Wolves and all other wild canids with the exception of the African wild dog have them. Dew claw injuries are far rarer than stated and the dew serves a very important purpose in reducing twisting and torque on the leg when turning or running. Absence of dew claws has been conclusively linked to a much higher rate of foot & carpus injuries + arthritis in sport dogs. Dews aren't commonly removed in my breed, the GSD, even amongst working and sporting dogs, and there is no epidemic of dew claw injuries.
@@sjsisjsjks we're talking about REAR dew claws here, and they do NOT exist in wolves or any other foundation stock other than generational dog breeds (from closed off gene pools and yes, a deformity). Rear dew claws have no supporting structure whatsoever and, unfortunately, they are ripped far more often than not amongst working dogs. Not to mention the various infections that come about from the floppy rear nail getting gouged into the rear tarsals and leading to recurring open wounds at ground level. This is why the majority of people remove rear dews, and I can't blame them as I've first hand seen the damage that comes from them in highly active working K9s and field dogs over the course of a couple decades.

Puppies don't actually have much feeling in their paws at this age. The most they would feel is a pinch. Dew claw removal is usually recommended for working dogs that have a higher chance of major injury. Such as sled dogs or dense hunting dogs.
You are confused and incorrect in every assumption you just made . It is a worthless digit that DOES cause huge problems for some dogs later in life and the dog does not miss the useless fingernail . My Basset hound almost lost a leg from a bacterial infection that he got from getting his worthless fingernail caught on a mesh tarp while he was out in the backyard and you can remove just the nail and leave the finger if you really think they need it and my bassets all still have their thumbs but never again will they have a dewclaw nail to deal with. I had a labrador tear his own thumb off when his nail got caught in the carpet he was sleeping on . They are more trouble than they are worth and it does not hurt the dog to remove the nail whatsoever and my dogs are better off without them . I have had to many bad experiences with older dogs. The only reason a dog has them is for gripping in breeding and catching animals so they can kill them and eat them . Domestic dogs for the most part do not chase and kill things anymore and these dewclaws end up being more trouble than they are worth for the pet and the ones who love them . Worse than docking ears or docking tails ? PLEASE ! Humans have their wisdom teeth removed for the same reasons you remove dewclaws . They statistically cause more trouble than they are worth to chance keeping them and to say this is cruel and unusual is simply stupid compared to cutting the dog's ears off and sewing the two ends together or cutting off the balance center of the dog and grinding the bone back so it can be sewn together all for dog fighting purposes. Those terrible acts against dogs for no medical reason (in most breeds) other than to make the dog a better dog on dog fighter or someone out there like the fighting dog look . These practices are a 1000 times more cruel than it is to take the dogs toe nail off the finger that does nothing to benefit the dogs life . You are wrong minded enough to think simply cutting the dog's toenails is cruel ? ALL dogs need their nails cut to keep them healthy and avoid injuries to humans and the dogs . You do not just let dog nails grow unchecked unless you are a cruel person who does not take care of the pets like they should be cared for. If a dogs nails are not cut the quick becomes unmanageable and the nails grow so long that the dogs feet hurt with every step they take . You have to trim a dog's toenails so they can be a happy fun loving dog and not have to worry about their feet . These things are what dog owners do so their dogs have the best lives possible . People who know more about dogs than you do have worked this stuff out already and the practice is for the dogs benefit so they can have the longest most stress free and healthy life they can live while they are with us . Ask your local vet how many times they have had to deal with dew claw issues in older dogs before you form any opinion. If this bothers you you should watch a human circumcision. Now that's cruel and inhuman .

I think it hurt THEM more than you. You did not have your thumbs cut off without anesthesia!
Why do you still have this up?
Dew claws are not useless. People should really do more research on the subject. Not here to bash , but if you really study the way a dog uses it legs and feet the dew claw is very much there for a reason. Especially in working dogs having them in certain situations can be a life saver. It is a fact that injury to them is rare. For instance retrievers use them to grab onto ice to pull ot of the water and assist in climbing steep banks. Not to mention just watch any active dog move . They USE them and not having them can cause strain on muscles and tendons they are there to take the impact from.
My vet recommends them to be off no matter the situation
Some dogs may use them some dont. Dont forget many breeds are crossed so some dogs get them from inter breeding and they dont function as well as what it may have on an origional breed. Also some dogs are still bred for working so there is a danger to the dew claw getting torn. Thats why herding breeds started getting them removed. I have dogs with dew claws and some without and the ones with dont grip my floor better or have any advantages ive seen above the others. I just have to trim more nails.
Dew claws are to weak to assist in climbing anything and are more likely to rip out causing blood loss and infection. They may have served that purpose in the distant past but no longer.
@@wilgarris this was studied with stop-motion photography of running dogs. They contact the ground firmly and reduce twisting and torque on the leg. Dogs used to chase birds of air fields also get their declaws caught in brush and other debris. Not every dog is a pet that sits around all day doing nothing and the only thing they come across that may hurt them is a piece of future.some are very active and doing activities that can rip.their declaw off.
Puppies don't actually have much feeling in their paws at this age. The most they would feel is a pinch. Dew claw removal is usually recommended for working dogs that have a higher chance of major injury. Such as sled dogs or dense hunting dogs.
i feel bad for the puppy now how is he fight back
Fight back at what? Jeez. Besides dogs dont fight with their dew claws.
why did you do that????
Jess TheBarber they tear off as they get older and require surgery. It’s safer this way and less trauma as the tissues are not fully developed yet. Of course it hurts too but so does circumcision on a baby
People want dog maintenance to be easier... so they don't have to trim their dew claws. It's the most difficult nail to cut.

It's dew!
@@donandleah Thanks, I actually spelled it that way and was auto corrected by my dumbass phone.🙃
It's not. There is a one in a million chance it could get an infection. Same percentage as any other part of the dogs body. Humans do it because they like the look more. That's the real reason.

Ruby Gold ok
K N you’re disgusting. Hope you sleep well at night knowing you sell living beings for pure profit and care not an ounce for their actual wellbeing. This is so unnecessary... even if it is a dead appendage which it is not in most dogs. There still isn’t a reason to remove it. Which means you do it for aesthetics. You care more about how the animal looks then its feelings and wellbeing. Idk how u live with yourself lmao. But keep telling yourself you’re not a cruel person 👌
Of course you would. It would be surgery for a grown dog. Talk to your Vet. The Vet removes dewclaws and docks tails of 3 day old puppies with no anesthesia or pain meds. My dogs still have their dewclaws too. They serve no purpose but there is a risk they can get caught on something and get pulled off. Then there is the pain. Dewclaws are better off removed at 3 days old. As a retired Groomer and working for Veterinarians for years I have seen several painful situations with dewclaws and on the other hand I have had dogs and seen dogs who had dewclaws all their lives with no problems. That little puppy in this video will never remember this short time of pain just like your newborn circumcised baby baby won't, but it is better that it is done right after birth. She is doing this puppy a favor. She is not hurting it at all.

That didn't look like the dew claw to me. It looks like one of the toes of the paw. The dew claw is on the leg up from the paw.
just leave them?
if it gets left, it might get stuck to something and eventually get pulled out anyway. this saves the weeks of pain in the future.
@@jaejudges2442 it rarely happens.
Jessica vd i guess just in case? sorry i don’t really know too much information and already concluded an opinion, but it says in the description that it’s the reason she’s removing the claw
@@jaejudges2442 I've had sixteen dogs in total. All had their claws/thumbs and nothing ever happened in their lives. Nor do have any of my friends ever had anything happen to them in their dog's lives so I guess it's not common at all. :) let's say in the Netherlands/Europe it's rarely ever done and injuries to those 'thumbs' are not at all common. Perhaps with certain working dogs there is a risk. In the US, in my opinion, people are a little too eager to remove parts of a dog for no reason. Such as ears and tails (docking and cropping). Plus the 200+ Dollars for surgery should something happen just to get that claw removed is nonsense. No vet needs to spend that much time to remove a damaged claw so that's a little too much. The worst thing that usually happens is a ripped nail and if you watch your dog and get dog friendly fences, so not the ones with the holes in it where they can get stuck, then what could happen?
Jessica vd thank you for educating me on that topic, i wasn’t really sure and just went with the description. i didn’t know that because i only have cats, no dogs.

@@lauriecandlelover wtf does any of this have to do with abortion?? Christ Almighty!
There are numerous reasons why this is done. My dog caught his dew claw in a chain link fence and tore the whole nail off and ripped the dew claw half way off the foot. He was 2 years old and it took many weeks to heal. There is definitely a reason this is done, same as docking a tail. Calling this cruel is ridiculous many reputable breeders do this for companion dogs that are not in the field or working.
Clip the nail so it can't become a hook
Bs, you can get anything stuck in anything. Just trimming the nails is good enough. Also tail docking is animal cruelty, you're taking away a dogs tail. A tail is very important to a dog, why you think they ff got it?? You don't need your little toe, why not cut that off? You gonna ram it into the coffee table anyways. Why not pulling off all your toenails aswell? Darn ears are in the way, better butcher those too. Piss off.
Then wait until old enough for anesthesia then do it if they are hanging. Most of the time unnecessary!
You kept the clamp on way to long and could have simply used your fingers to lift the dew claw while clamped instead of a scissor scrape.
This!!!!

I think removing dewclaws is needed thing but I don’t think “just leaving it for a second” is a good idea. Do it quick and get it over with
you should never do it
Jake Gerads you think it’s “needed thing”? Do some research because it isn’t. It rarely causes issues like “getting stuck on stuff and tearing” which happens to like .001% of dogs and it actually helps dogs with gripping and certain other things in a lot of cases.
Needed? Remove your thumbs then.
king khaos This depends on the type of claw. Stop spreading antidotal information. If the claw is attached at the joint, it should be left alone. If it is only attached by skin, then it should be removed to prevent injury. This procedure is mostly done for cosmetic reasons and is cruel as hell
king khaos Your girlfriend being a vet means absolutely nothing. Especially since there are PLENTY OF VETS that advise against this unless it’s necessary. So again, I said what I said and my opinion remains the same. And since when do we use someone else’s credentials as proof of your knowledge on the subject? That should’ve made you laugh. Check your logic.
Some of the comments on here are just rediculous. Removing the dewclaws does serve a purpose, many dogs such as herding and sporting breeds that run through various types of terrian often get the dewclaws caught on brush and debris and either break them or rip them off, both very painful to the dog. Breaking a dewvlaw is basically the same as a human breaking their thumb, however digs, unlike humans do not NEED their dewclaws so it is typical for a breeder to have them removed while the dog is still a very young puppy. Typically around 3 days old. This video is a very good example of how they are removed. There is very little if any pain involved in the process as the dewclaws have no nerves nor is the bone fused yet. Aside from the glue used by a vet to close the area this is exactly how it is done. Perhaps educating yourself on the topic would benefit many of you who obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
dewclaws pay an important role in dogs when running. they provide stability. removing that digit is almost always unnecessary. unless it has been damaged beyond repair or is causing health problems, it should be kept. all you have to do is trim it or file it down. you don’t see people cutting off the smallest toes for swimmers to make them more streamlined, do you?
They making numbing meds for this!!!! 😡

Why
Funny how many people don’t like this but it’s 100% normal practice. And how many people complain their dogs have dew claws 🙄 This is brutal in my opinion because of the clamping things you use. I’ve always seen them just cut off with nail clippers for old ppls nails.
I know its needed, the puppies like babies probably don't remember any of it when they get older but i could never do this as a job... Makes me cringe just watching it, and i feel so bad for the pups even though they might not remember it, i just can't hear that sound.

Melissa Hauer yes it is.
@@joanasanchez6764 no, it's not. The veterinary field opposes it based on scientific evidence - extremely low incidence of dew claw injuries, and studies conclusively showing absence of dews in sport dogs results in increased torque and twisting of the leg when turning and running, causing a much higher rate of foot & carpus injuries + arthritis among those dogs than those left with them.

Dew claw has no purpose other than causing troubles for the dogs later on. It's not like docking dogs' tails and ears which are just for the look. Dew claws can really harm dogs if you let it stay.
No it doesn't. I have yet to see a dachshund (my breed) with removed dew claws. No body does that and they don't have any problems and they are hunting. What kind of problems could a get a cavalier sitting on the couch or going in the bath with it's dewclaws if a hunting dog has no problem with them?
Actually, docking tails is a customary thing for hunting dogs who may get their tails caught and cost their owners thousands to repair/get rid of. It's an aesthetic thing for many breeds, but for others it's a precautionary thing for their line of work.
Linda Banga it's true I've owned 6 dogs in my life and 4 have had ripped dews.. my south African mastiff had his removed thank God but both german shepherds tore there's. and the JR caught them on rugs and almost anything. all were well groomed and trimmed. I could never own a pup with them after seeing my own dogs suffer for long periods of time when it could of been totally avoided
Exactly. My rottweiler didnt have his removed and when he was 2 he was playing with our other dog and ended up getting it ripped off. He was in so much pain. I felt so bad for him. Blood everywhere, 2 expensive vet trips and 2 rounds of antibiotics. I wish his had been removed
@@FactsFirst you're a moron! Go eat a tide pod and save others from your ignorance.
So you think it is okay to do this without anaesthetic? Nothing but cruel, not to mention the risk of infection, you have caused unnecessary suffering for the pups.
The puppies would most likely die if you give them anesthetic at that young of an age. Dew claws are useless unless the dog works on ice. They cause pain and can be ripped out:
Flannel_Is_The_Warmest_Color Utter garbage. My dogs use their Dew claws when they are eating Jumbones or rawhide chews. There is no excuse to mutilate animals like this.
They don't NEED them to eat bones though. My dog doesn't have hers and she devours her bones at the same speed as a dog with dew claws. You'd rather your dog use their dew claws to eat a bone and possibly have them get caught in things it's ripped off than go through the 2 second window of discomfort as a newborn and be safe? It's not mutilation if it's for the dogs wellbeing.
Did you not watch the video at all or do you just open your mouth and spread your bullsh*t?
Yeah you cant just be giving puppies anesthetic without some danger to them. Its sad when people get on here and just spout their opinions without knowing why someone might feel the need to remove dew claws. Ever seen a dog gets its dew claw caught on something and ripped out? Or having it half hanging and bleeding? Dogs who are working dogs like shepherds and cattle dogs can get injured with dew claws getting caught or tails trampled. Believe me its worse than getting dew claws removed as a puppy.Thats why it was done in the first place. Dont like? Dont buy a dog with removed dew claws or docked tails. I have some with and without dew claws and tails but the standard is no dew claws and no tails for Aussies. Also people who show dogs in Arenas get dogs that have to conform to breed standards. Why not go voice your disapproval to people who actually neglect and abuse their dogs. 😥
Oh my..I watched the video as well as another lady's video on dewclaw removal..I wanted to do this to my grown, 4 year old male cat, Pubert..ashe has not been neutered yet and keep trying to hump my Rat Terrier dog and when he does, the dewclaw gets caught on my doggie's side and hurts him..well this was not the best idea..oh let me tell you kitty turned back around as I locked the vice grip on his paw and I am covered in blood! MY own blood, not the cats blood!! Oh kitty did not lose a drop of blood!!! It's all mine!! He slung the vice grip and his paw around smashing my tv screen, hitting my knee and clawing my leg on the way down!! I learned a good lesson!! Kitty does not need his dewclaw removal like a puppy does!! (Fictional story but have had very similar events happen during kitty cat claw trimming sessions!!)

+Kristen Hoy - Lawrence No, you have the dew claws removed by a vet (and as a vet student, no, this is not how its done at a vets office and telling people it is is a lie). If you cannot afford to have your pets dews removed by a vet then you shouldn't own and certainly shouldn't breed dogs........
People circumcise their sons ... they don't even remember it, I doubt the puppy remembers having a useless, vestigial toe removed
109367 Alright maybe your parents should have removed you thumbs. Cause that's the "useless nail" your talking about.
+Adonaia Rodrigues Our thumbs are not useless ... a dew claw is useless, a human's thumbs are practically what makes us human, we use our thumbs to use tools. How the hell do our thumbs equate to the same thing as dew claws on a dog? Which aren't even attached to the dog's skeletal system, it's just skin and tissue. You're a moron.
Oh that poor baby!!!
This is NOT right, you should at least give something for the PAIN. Is just cruel with out it.
You cant give puppies that small local anesthetic. Its dangerous. The pain is over fairly quick and its not a risk to their life like anesthesia.
WHY
My dog came running to the iPad when he heard this.... I’m crying.. you’re NOT supposed to remove the front ones omfg 😭😭😭😭😭🤬🤬🤬🤬
I have a Golden Pyrenees with detached rear dew claws that were never removed. We do have issues because at times he will get the poor little toe sides snagged on the carpet if his nail is a bit too long, but even then YOU TRIM THE NAILS 😭😭😭 the front ones are his little thumbs! Dogs need those and you literally just cracked his little bone omg... this should be deemed animal cruelty.
You don’t need a vet to tell you that dew claws should not be removed! It is common sense holy jesus 😫 I’m a breeder myself and I only did remove those claws on the back feet in two litters. This was enough for me to understand that first - it is animal cruelty, second - puppyhood trauma and most importantly it affects their posture in a bad way. Because those toes connect to a ligament system of the whole foot. Don’t cut off body parts of your animals people.

I've had two dogs over the years. The first one had horrible problems with dew claws. Seemed to hurt him getting them cut. Couldn't get groomers to do it. Just misery. The next dog I was onto it and got his dew claws surgically removed under anaesthetic... ... and I regret it. He really does seem to try and use where they would have been to hold things :/ It seems like you can't win. I bought him a brother and he has dew claws and again, I have to harass groomers to remember to cut them. I know I could do it myself but my eyes aren't great and I'm so scared of cutting the quick. So I don't know what the right way to do it is... It's not the same as cutting off a thumb, some dew claws are barely connected and don't even have tendons in them. I feel a bit better seeing how clean and quick it is for the puppy.
Why did your second dog have them removed? If he needed anesthesia he was probably too old for the procedure. They should only be removed within 5 days of birth, or in situations where they have been damaged and removal is necessary. The procedure I have heard is extremely painful for them if not done early enough, (something about them not being fully developed at birth but connecting to the bone as they get older) so it is likely he still felt pain afterward.
@@Sariahec I had them removed when he was desexed. And it was definitely sore for him afterwards. It was miserable enough that I opted not to got the other dog's removed when he was desexed... but now he has those long dew claws I have to keep hounding groomers to clip. I've seen him get them caught on blankets and things too. So how do you win? I'd rather not go removing things from my pets. Surgery is miserable. But the life long problems some of them can have with dew claws also seems miserable. As much as people squirm at the puppy's crying in this video, maybe it's the best way. I'm not an expert, just a dog owner trying to do his best by his hounds.
@@CappyK You’re very honest, at least you’ll know that mutilation is a no no for the future. 👍🏼
Once the groomer clips the dewclaws, keep up with them on your own by filing them down each week. If you use a metal file made for dogs, there’s no vibration like in a Dremel tool. And you won’t cut into the quick. Practice makes perfect 👍🏻

That is obviously painful! Will the puppy remember it? I’m sure not, but if you were a truly GREAT breeder, you’d have them removed by a vet.
Do poeple remember being circumcised? Cuase we do that to babies without antheisa has well. Also there are reasons why anthesia is not used.1 cuase the nerves aren't developed so it cuases very little pain.2 cuase there is a high risk of death for young animals when put under anesthesia.
That’s great, I know that my son was given a local when he was circumcised. There must be nerves, or the pup would cry. Also banding a tail to die and fall off is disgusting. I have 2 Rotties, ones tail was removed by a vet, and one that was banded. The banded tail is so sensitive she needs sedation if a temperature is needed. So again a Great breeder wouldn’t be doing this.
Honestly, there is really no good reason to de-claw animals. It's merely cruel. Let me ask you, would you cut YOUR hand from the knuckle up? No? I didn't think so. Have sympathy. Imagine how much pain these animals are feeling.
This was done very well.Puppy stopped crying soon as you where done it was quick and easy...15 years of doggrooming.....I dont know how many times I seen dew claws get injured at the groom shop from getting stuck in towels and in the kennels and we have to do a quick fix up and treat the dogs injury.Or they come in already with dewclaw injury and owner's think were vets and we should fix it.
If they're trimmed with the rest of the nails they don't get caught on things. Don't you trim them as a groomer?
Right Kim! The neglect on dewclaws is bonkers. No clue why people leave them on.
