  • As someone who admittedly doesn’t know much about gymnastics, I’ve always found the dance elements of the women’s floor routines to be so disjointed 💀 it always felt like they would do the most impressive tumbling passes we ever see but then they’re forced to stop and do the cha cha slide for like 30 seconds so it could be called a “dance” routine. Either both men’s and women’s floor should be focused on the tumbling passes, or there should be some way to integrate tumbling and dancing more smoothly so it doesn’t feel like “okay I gotta stop and boogie down for a bit for ‘artistic merit’ “

    • @@elliesdream247 Ok so heres the thing: The rings require mostly arm and upper body strenght. And women, no matter how hard they might train, could never get the same results as a man who trained it. This is also the reason why you don't see 16 or 17 years old guys competing against the top male gymnasts internationally, because their bodies are at a natural disadvantage that can't be simply pushed aside even by a lot of training. The only way to incorporate the rings into womens gymnastics would be to change the routines and exercises completely. But at that point it probably wouldn't be very interesting, because the whole strenght aspect would be missing which is crucial to mens rings.

  • Male athletes get to just be athletes. Female athletes have to look pretty while they do it. I wonder what would happen if the women were allowed to just focus on the athletics, or if the men had to look pretty, too? Either way, I'd love to see it!

  • Another significant difference is that women generally compete at the Olympic level when they are in their teens. Men’s gymnastics favors an adult body and musculature.

    @zoundstreetop@zoundstreetop Жыл бұрын
    • You start being old for most "air" and acrobatic stuff after puberty ends, as a guy. It's stuff like rings and similar things that require the typical adult male strength that prolong a male gymnasts life in competition. I remember saying I was getting old for tumbling at the age of 19, and I went for the rings. We get stronger, but less agile. It is just what it is, gymnastics are very physically demanding sports, regardless of female or male modalities, and you pass your prime at a very young age.

      @zoundstreetop@zoundstreetop Жыл бұрын
    • @@zoundstreetop I'm not tall by any means, and when you get into competitive gymnastics either it thwarts your growth or you get too tall to be competitive so you leave. It's really about being able to keep the extremely fit shape that is required for stuff like tumbling, and the strenuous training it requires. I had two crushed disks at the age of 21, and I quit my dreams of being a ninja (joking) very early because my wrists and ankle cartilages were just used up, and to this day every step I take my ankles crack; according to our club's physician, tumblers often get to their 20's with the joint wear of a 40 year old. The ability of your body to tolerate extreme joint abuse is also something that filters gymnasts.

      @rrs_13@rrs_13 Жыл бұрын
    • Yeah unfortunately for females, puberty causes your hips to get wider and heavier cuz the female body prioritizes fertility over physical strength and agility. Most girls I knew growing up (myself included) hit a bit of a plateau in their progress once they hit puberty.

  • It's kinda weird how performative women are forced to be compared to men. Like the actual physical achievements aren't interesting enough to watch them do it. Or like men aren't allowed to add an artistic/performative element. It's kinda odd. You'd think if all of them do awesome stuff in floor and people think "this would be even better with music and cool moves" then... surely that would be the case for all of them...

    @kaboomsihal1164@kaboomsihal1164 Жыл бұрын
    • There used to be lots of other moves allowed that are outlawed in both categories now (ostensibly for safety) but it made the routines so much less creative and interesting to watch. I truly believe there is a fear among judges that if the men are allowed dance or other 'expression' then the judges would feel uncomfortably questioning if that makes them homosexual to be looking at other men's bodies so intently to judge them.

The floor routines are the worst offender by far though as women have to perform to music to show off a glorified contemporary ballet dance with ribbons or hoops or balls rather than the form and athleticism in men’s floor routines. It’s so stupid that the women also do crazy floor tumbling feats but are required to stop that flow to do the fucking Macarena while men’s is focused purely on form. @cobbler88@cobbler88 Жыл бұрын
    • @@cobbler88 No, they are certainly better off playing to each sex’s strengths. Men’s beam would not be watched very much and the training for it does not align hardly at all with the events men tend to do best in, meaning they either have to spend time training for an event they are simply nowhere near as good at and in ways that hold back the events they are good at. For example, it’s difficult to learn how to do a flare on the pommel horse. You need strength, power, and coordination. It is also difficult to learn how to do a back walkover on the beam. You need flexibility, grace, and balance. The training for each are completely opposite, and training both side by side actually works to impede the others as learning the control needed for beam will also train you to be less powerful and explosive like you need on pommel, the flexibility you need for beam will make it more difficult to gain the strength needed for pommel, etc. Then you gotta think about the business side. You are now holding events that will retain less viewers. Comparatively not very many people will enjoy watching a man on a beam or a woman on the rings. They simply aren’t as good at it as the other sex, making it similar to the NBA and WNBA across different events, requiring one to take up the slack of the other, costing both. It is simply better the way it is. Of course a few changes can be made and should be made when and if necessary, but completely changing the sport’s structure isn’t it.

  • For people genuinely asking “why”. It comes down to the history of gymnastics. While we can all sit here and talk about patriarchy and men wanting women in small, very skin showy outfits, for gymnastics, it’s about the purpose of the demonstration. Men’s events are designed to display power and strength, women’s events are designed to display elegance, grace, and precision. Overall, the sports were designed to highlights the epitome of both masculine and feminine athletic ability. Obviously in the 21st century our culture is working to deconstruct those previous ideals, which makes it seem like sexist, but it’s really a demonstration of what people viewed as peak performance for both men and women during that time. Men being strong and powerful, women being graceful and elegant. It’s not derogatory to highlight the differences in gender, but I can understand the abrasion to this notion. Overall, gymnastics is a dying sport, for both men and women (I’d argue is dying faster for men, but that’s a whole other topic). While some changes may create more attraction to the sport, others (such as forcing males to dance) may end up pushing people away.

    • You probably need to explain your reasons. They likely have very valid physical reasons for reducing the number of events for women and the types. You don't expect women to do rings or high bar catch and releases.

    • No, it's not sexist. It's the opposite. I feel like no other sport celebrates the beauty of each sex's biological properties quite like gymnastics. Men are biologically more capable of doing strength moves, while women tend to be more flexible. The differences in the events account for all of that.

    @orrelse124@orrelse124 Жыл бұрын
    • Ok if I misunderstood your question lmk. The reason that we all have different events is because of how we’re made biologically. Men are typically atleast 30-35% stronger than woman. Men are typically stronger in their upper body so they focus on events with upper body strength. This is why they have more events that focus on strength rather than dance. Women on the other hand are biologically more flexible than men. This is why we have dance elements. Women are stronger in their lower body, this is why 3/4 events focus on legs. Also, women could physically not do rings. Women have muscles in our shoulders men don’t have. We would tear muscles trying to do it.

  • The men's routines focus on their raw strength, power, and agility. The women, on the other hand, their routine seems like they have to integrate a more 'sensual' routine...almost as if, because they're women, they have to perform for "entertainment" of a different sort and I think it detracts from their full potential to also deliver raw strength and agility. All that 'cha-cha-cha' is totally unnecessary and cheapens their grace and fluidity!
