The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed, co-produced, and co-written by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, the film is the second installment of Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy and a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale and supported by Sir Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. In the film, Bruce Wayne / Batman (Bale), Police Lieutenant James Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart) form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City, but are menaced by an anarchistic mastermind known as the Joker (Ledger), who seeks to undermine Batman's influence and turn the city to chaos.

Jokers plotting is way to far fetched...jonathan nolan kinda over did it here...joker was like 5 steps ahead...i love batman and even more i love the nolans but TDK is the worst of nolans directing...he doesnt have his signature flashback scenes signaling to me that this is not his movie. Its more of a jonathan nolan type movie.

The interrogation scene between Batman and Joker is imo one of the best scenes in cinema history
Very similar to Michael Mann's "Heat" with the diner scene between Al Pacino and Robert De Nero's characters. A film which Chris Nolan obviously took inspiration from.

The end monologue by Gordon at the end NEVER fails to give me chills. It's just so Batman. He isn't a hero. But ends up being one.

The joker anticipating every move by the cops and staying 5 steps ahead is so phony....he was going after harvey dent but when he got captured it was actually part of his plan? The joker knew he would be thrown into a cell with the accountant and so they already planted a bomb in a guy who got arrested and thrown into the same cell as the joker...then joker is able to capture dent and dawes and distract the cops while slipping out of jail...stfu bad bad plot

I have no doubt that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will be masterful, but what made Heath’s Joker really blow me away was how completely he stole the show despite it being one of the most insanely talented casts ever involving multiple complex characters AND only having 33 minutes of screen time.

Saw it. Oscar winning performance in a film no one will remember. Ledger on the other hand ... But on a positive note, it does prove that you can have the best cast, performing the act of their lives in a feature filmed as best as humanly possible, but if you don't have a story, you got nothing.

One of the best films of one of the best trilogies of all time. The thirty or so Marvel films don't hold up to the three Batman films Nolan made. He raised the bar in every way. Every scene is absolute perfection.

yeh the Dark Knight Rises* was Meh, many Marvel movies are better than that!, go watch Guardians of the Galaxy, the Winter Soldier or Ragnarok all 3 are better than Rises IMO Rises really bummed me out, I'm not even sure I saw it twice at the cinema, The Dark Knight however I saw that atleast 7 times at the cinema, 3 maybe 4 times at IMAX(it was re-releasd for a bit so I could see it so much)

He couldn’t be, he’s in the movie less than the joker
I see him as an antagonist of sorts for Batman/Bruce Wayne. Harvey and Bruce Wayne/Batman deal with justice in different ways hence the Dark Knight/White Knight duality. Harvey is also a competitor for Rachel's affections who clearly has chosen Harvey over Bruce. It's due to Harvey's actions as Two Face that forces Bruce into hiding, and Gordon to lie to the public. I always believe that situations reveal who we are more than they change us. Two Face indicates to me literallly and figuratively that there was a lot of darkness in Harvey initially that just needed to be revealed which was what Joker was trying to prove and he did. So he is very much an antagonist in many ways to Bruce.
There's a video essay I watched the other day where it's suggested the Beast is the protagonist of Beauty and the Beast, not Belle. Belle is the character the audience follows and is introduced to, but she does little to drive the plot of the film, and doesn't change as a character during it - she has no arc. Beast, on the other hand, grows as a character and changes (quite literally) throughout the story. Harvey in TDK is the same, basically. Which I guess makes Joker Gaston XD
"Joker" was fantastic. But somehow, Ledger's Joker is superior in my book. Especially his total lack of credible backstory.

I won't compare the two cause we barely saw Joaquin's Joker. Majority of movie was about his transformation.
3:13: "Not to get too pretentious..." This insecurity among great filmmakers in the industry is very telling about the anti-intellectual nature of Hollywood. There's nothing pretentious about quoting Shakepeare or being versed in literature from centuries before, but I'm sure countless producers and directors creating trash would consider it so and attack a man like Nolan for it.
On the contrary, I think there are a lot bad story tellers who can quote old literature and come off as pretentious as they try and retell stories without the skill or understanding. I'm sure Nolan probably runs into his fair share of wine twirling individuals who believe they're smarter than they are. I'm not a fan of everything the man touches but I respect Nolan's skills as a storyteller and the fact that he has yet to come off as better than someone else for having that particular skill.
The funny thing about everyone using Shakespeare as some kind of icon of intellectualism is that in his time he produced very populist, mainstream content. MovieBob has a really interesting video on this idea.

11:40 Holy shit. That characterization of Batman, the choice to film the threatening scenes in broad daylight, the parallels to the myth of Dracula. That's just genius story-telling, theming and filmmaking from Nolan and his team. Hats off to this great director.

Piggy backing off that, the ONLY scene we see Batman in broad daylight is at the end of TDKR when he's fighting Bane , and Bane's followers and the cops are fighting in the background. At that point in the character journey, Batman is has almost completed his redemption arc, of transcending into becoming a symbol, whatever Gotham needs him to be, going from this shadowy vigilante who only operates at night to a HERO not afraid to be seen by everyone and inspired by everyone. It's cool, seemingly, that Nolan stuck to this conceit of "Batman only comes out at night" and waited until the FINAL action sequence in The Dark Knight trilogy, the one that cements Batman as a legend in order to finally pay that off.

The bits toward the end where Nolan talks about having the most threatening moments in daytime/light was very interesting. I think that one factor that helps this idea work so well, is that most of us watched the largest terrorist attack in US history happen at 9am on a Tuesday morning. So that image of an unpredictable threat in the daytime (in an urban setting) is already lodged in the back of our minds.
It's the whole measure of unpredictability too, that in normal storytelling tropes, we expect a terrifying and threatening sequence to happen at night, all (as Joker would put it) "part of the plan". When you have these terrifying set pieces occur in broad daylight, no-one's expecting it, it doesn't fulfil the usual filmmaking language we're all used to, while at the same time seeming more *real* and having the "oh my god, this could actually happen" factor.

Holy heck, their entire motivation beyond the daytime action scenes and how that causes the audience to be more unsettled knowing that even something as thematically safe as light and daytime is not at all safe is so brilliant.

Greatest Superhero movie. Greatest opening scene. Greatest protagonist/antagonist interactions/conflicts. Greatest movie of all time for many people. Greatest supporting actor. Greatest Acting (Heath Ledger) for many people. I've seen so many movies meticulously, trust me, this movie will not be easy to top off.

@@DillHurley7 personally I like them, not a huge fan but they are action packed and funny to many people. They are constantly expanding their universe which can lead to a very huge and successful grand finale (Endgame). But it's predictable, and all the movies end up having the same plot and ending. I definitely prefer to watch a movie like Logan or TDK trilogy. These movies did things differently, and they ended up being better than the whole avenger's saga.
There are many characters better and more flashed out and better developed than the joker so calm down he's not the best thing ever made lol

Someone who’s committed to something they love will obviously do a better job at it, Nolan is a perfect example of someone who created an amazing Trilogy because of that commitment to really bring Batman and The Joker to the big screen.
Michael Caine kills it as Alfred, he doesn’t get that much love but his acting is a really great part in Nolan’s Batman Trilogy!!!

Having read comics since the 70s, and watching the TV show and the Jim Burton version... This was ART captured on film. The cast, lines and the late Ledgers performance will be difficult to top.

Just finished watching the re-released on IMAX and I can't stop crying for 10 minutes after the film is over. It's just so tragic and perfect. I really missed the older Nolan films that focused more on psychological demons of the hero. I mean Interstellar, Dunkirk, or even Tenet, are great films with epic set pieces and storytelling, but I love when he dive into the internal conflict of the character.
Great video, I've always been fascinated by the polar opposites of Joker and Batman. Maybe I'm overthinking it but to take this one step further. From an architectural stand point, what's so great about The Dark Knight is that Gotham is not shown as the typical Gothic city we're used to seeing. Over the course of the film, we see several shots of grids (facades, lit ceilings such as the underground bunker with the platform). The use of the grid and the minimal aesthetic is actually a far more accurate portrayal of Batman's nature, it represents order and control. This is why the film is so great, it created a new visual language of Batman, one that we haven't seen before.
Contrast that with Burton's portrayal of Gotham which looked like a gothic theme park.
One thing that amazed me and stayed with me after watching the film was surprisingly how important the role of Harvey dent was ! It was a batman movie and then the unreal hype surrounding the jokers performance, we were not expecting harvey dent to be a central character! But it was and it was basically a three hero film ! And even Gordon had such a prominent role. Also Batman's girlfriend is blown off by a bomb tied to her in the first half of the movie ! Which was again unexpected.. usually there are death scares but it never happens and if such rare deaths take place it's in the climax.. It was truly a masterpiece and a great film!
nishant singh I was surprised about the importance of Dent. I saw him as a throwaway character, maybe because I was so focused on the Joker. I don’t understand how he was a hero. What did he do? And how could he possibly replace Batman? Batman is Batman because of his martial arts and his gadgets. Harvey Dent doesn’t have those things

@@bryanhawkins9418 Dent was important because Batman had no jurisdiction...just like the Joker. Batman had to do his work hiding in the shadows which forced the criminals hand to believe in someone they fully didn't understand in Joker...Dent had a public face and was the ray of light for Gotham they hadn't seen in years since Bruce's parents. Dent was proof Gotham could be cleaned up within the boundaries of the law and not from a vigilante who could easily be blamed for their cities failures.
I can watch this Movie every damn day! The performance by heath ledger is iconic and timeless.

I never notice before that the police officer scrambling during the assassination attempt by the Joker looks a lot like bats scattering away from the light or from a tunnel. That's why I love "The Dark Knight" because you see something new every time you watch it.

Avengers: Endgame look like High School Musical compared to The Dark Knight
Why can’t people just appreciate both movies? I think The Dark Knight is better but Endgame was very enjoyable too, especially when you think about the buildup. Just because you’re a fan of DC, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Marvel movies.

@@donfharis2582 It is not about enjoying....It is about creating a legacy. The Dark Knight was skillfully planned while Endgame was all about hype and fan following. Both are good but. If Endgame is MIT then the TDK is Oxford.
People think the Joker lost in dark knight, many didn’t comprehend his goal was to turn Gotham's White Knight (Harvey Dent) into the mad criminal descending into chaos. And there by turning The Dark Knight (Batman) in a murderer.
That was a means to an end, not his goal.

Watching this just makes me appreciate The Dark Knight and the trilogy as a whole alot more.

I want Nolan to direct every movie and franchise that I'm fond of. I literally am always blown away by his talent for storytelling and directing in his own original ways. I'm not kidding, I wouldn't mind seeing him direct Fast and Furious movies, or Jurassic World, or James Bond.. I'm sure he could make all of them great.

Hunger Games, Soma "Its a PC Game", Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind "Cant think of a thing that could make it even better, maybe Nolan can", Suicide Club "doubt he can pull it off without triggering today's society", Constantine, PsychoPass "its an anime" oh my i let my brain wander too much theres just so many. I'd like Nolan to touch other mind bending topics since he's so dang good at it.
I wonder how Nolan would with a Biblical epic that would be cool he should do Job for sure.
They seemed to be going back and forth with what the Joker is. One minute he's a force to be reckoned with, the next he's an anarchist. The Burma scene would've been great if when Bruce asked "why did they steal them", Alfred just shrugged his shoulders.

Christopher Nolan is living art itself. he is passionate about his work, even though he put no dialogue and narrate movie himself, it will be exploring depths of human emotion. Critical thoughts and flawless imagination putting on paper and on the screen can only be achieved if man has gifted soul. thanks for video.

Christopher Nolan, perhaps the most bankable director at the moment, maybe even more so than Spielberg. Certainly not in the latter’s hay-day, but definitely right now.
