You are right but to contribute. Asia is better to build wealth than in the West. Saving is very important and invest where you live not in Africa once u have a proper permit to live. Never, ever invest back home first, invest where you live. Where u can trust yourself and not your family or friends to build for u back home. I invested where I live first
We now have an African lioness who understands what Africans are going through and is ready to help Afrcans change the financial narratives. May God bless you sister.
Immigrated from kenya to the USA.. I can confirm shit is is real out here,,overseas is not for the weak
lol - not for the fainthearted my brother
We moved to London from GH when I was 6, now I’m 30. My cousins back home were always so envious and clueless; they’d casually ask us to bring them iPhones when we’d visit Ghana 😅 like they grew on trees haha. They were so fixed on the ghetto-rich lifestyle they had no idea how hard it was for my parents, who despite all this, sent all their earnings back home as well as raising many kids. Anyway, one of them is England and the other is in Canada, they’ll learn first hand how challenging it really is.
lol - they will certainly learn. Its amazing how they expect you to bring luxury items when coming home - and how they feel bad that you are 'stingy' when you don't. 🤔
I tried to tell Africans in my field about retirement such as Roth IRA, IRA but they can't comprehend what I'm saying. They will work long hours but black tax takes all their money. I see older Africans who can't retire because they can't live off social security and they never invested their money to grow it.
It is sad 😢 really
I've seen the same, but if a white person tells them, then they accept it.
Very true. Many immigrants that came in at older age (45+) get depressed at a point because of the frustration.
I knowww - It can be really frustrating
Am from Kenya and I agree with you when you said it's not in our culture to say NO but we need to change that seriously. I know a Kenyan who sent over $500K us dollars to him brothers who told him they are building 2 apartment complexes for him. When he retired from being a pilot and turned 60 he packed his bags and head home to Kenya only to find his brothers had built themselves mansions with his money. He couldn't sue them so he hung himself. SAD SAD STORY..
What??!! He hung himself- My God. What a sad story
Oh no?😂😂
I'm sorry but I blame him . Didn't he ever go back home to check on the progress of the projects after sending so much money?
A pilot couldn't get his black 🖤 ass back 🔙 home to check on the huge money 💰 he's spending at home. The "pilot" was asleep on the job and crashed the jet. That was not 🚫 a case of black tax. Just a case of stupidity and fiscal laxity.
So so pathetic
You made great points but you forgot another thing that drains their money , they have too many kids. Kids suck up all your money in the west. It’s not like Africa, there’s no cheap maid or nanny here.
Thats one goo one - thanks for the insight
Interesting. Yet more white people are having more than 3 children. The increase is happening .
Very true lol
There are so many people from the West who have multiple children. It's not only Africans who have many children.
@@tendanipelaelo6293 there’s a system to help western people with kids because they are CITIZENS!!! There’s isn’t a system to help African immigrants with kids , also the average African cannot afford a baby sitter or nanny in the west. Let’s not play dumb here.
One other reason - lack of generational access to PROPERTY. This is a factor even for the native born whose parent(s) for whatever reasons had no property to hand down to offspring. I work in rural Aus and know plenty of kids who dropped out of school at year10 and drive spanking new large 4x4s, great big houses etc. Why?> The family farm. Of course there are various arrangements to compensate the parents/siblings but it sure does beat starting from '0' which often would mean insurmountable life-long DEBT.
Thank you for this thought. How is it like for Africans in Australia?
Exactly
@@dontgobroketv Super racist - don't come here.
My father retired 80 years old and i poor health was still sending money to his siblings in Jamaica. Didnt matter if we needed anything we all had to pay and send oursleves to university. I once asked him when he was going to stop. He only knew he had to help. Even to the detriment of his nuclear family.
My goodness!! Really? Even to the detriment of his nuclear family? It is well
@@dontgobroketv I have learned from this I can love them from afar they will NOT be dependent on me and I will NOT pass this practice onto my children!!
My mom does the same thing been taking care of her sister(s) and their kids and their kids kids in jamaica.. i have to do everything fir myself ..a life
Everything in this video is spot on. It's all common sense in the end. Budget and live within your means, help yourself before you help others, level up on available learning opportunities, stay away from distractions keeping you from achieving your goals. If you're doing all this, treat yourself (within your budget), save and invest. We come from countries that lack opportunities so when you get the chance to go to a developed country, take advantage of all the resources available to better yourself and by extension you will help your family and country back home.
Awesome review - we do all need to be intentional when we come abroad or else we will miss out on all the important opportunities here
I'm an African immigrant too from Ghana, a retired bank president. I'm so impressed by your presentation delivery quality. Your points are on target! I like your candidness. -John 😊
Awww - thank you so so much. Hope you subscribed and shared to your network too
@secure954, OGA John haba, a day begins a story. Retired Bank President, fishing in low waters. Good. Only if it is the real deal. I will monitor this space.
The new first and second generation children of African parents born in the diaspora are being very proactive in breaking this cycle. They have made it their duty to not make the sacrifice they saw their parents made for relatives because it was their own upbringing which suffered. They will travel and enjoy their own money without any obligation to support distant relatives.. I fully support this decision
And the fact that they are 2nd generation means the bond is really not there to 'force' them to pay black taxes or deprive themselves for others back home. Good point!!
The new generation isn't strongly connected to their parents' roots. Many of them don't return to Africa ever again. We, in Africa, consider them a lost generation.
Very insightful video. Here in the UK black Africans have the lowest home ownership rates and salary earnings compared to other minorities such as Indians and Pakistanis. I think a lot of Africans migrate to western countries not with a long term growth mindset to that country they reside in. Too many of us come to the country work menial jobs to send the money back home to build houses there or start a business. Most of the time they tend to be very bad financial decisions that don’t come to anything. I’ve had certain family members make this mistake and unfortunately don’t have nothing to show for. Luckily my mum thought differently and is the only home owner in my family.
Its really sad and that's why I am trying to train my kids differently. I agree we have the short term perspective in these countries - we may be too attached to our countries which is nit abnormal but the fact that it affects our financial sense is what I dont like
It’s also about education as to why they do menial jobs…. Too many don’t value education to progress
@@tahliah6691 africans generally do value education especially West Africans from Ghana & Nigeria but the black tax and frankly unrealistic expectations about investing back home into economies that are unstable to their detriment does not help
Wow!! You are so right! I am from Nigeria. You touched all the points. I appreciate you. I will definitely share. I have been in the USA for 27years. I am also an investment advisor. Some of our people won’t listen. God help us all.
You are so welcome and thanks for sharing - Oh you are right - some will NOT just listen. God help us!!
In America we have the 401k that is available to every worker , yet most Africans refuse to invest .They instead are investing in poultries in Africa ! You should set aside a certain amount monthly to invest /send to your African country/ family of course but the 401k and other investing can make you a millionaire !!
i get you - probably they just want to invest in their own country
As an African American who found out by DNA testing I was IGBO Nigerian on the maternal side. I can say this without doubt, the longer you are away from Africa it will get to the point some will even claim they are not even from the place. We were stripped of everything by force, our languages, tribal identities, culture, you name it. But the DNA in our African blood cannot be denied, its the same blood that runs in many Africans who are our distant blood relatives. It and our beautiful black skin links us together for all eternity! I believe it dishonors the ancestors for you to go voluntarily to places they were force to go by the whip!
I think that us going where we go is for economic reasons - yes we had a poor start but maybe we can have a great finish!
While living abroad i may seem broke BUT my Investments back in Uganda East Africa are big,if i go back i am a land lord..may be because i landed in Denmark, a country with many jobs..more job than worker.. May be story would be different if it was Canada.
Maybe..... Denmark has more jobs than workers??
@@dontgobroketv yes Denmark has lots work, a population of just 5 . 9million.. BUT for the initial stages u hv to learn abit of Danish language which is not easy if u came into th country aged above 18..but still they know English well but if u learn their language your work levels will be elevated
Thank you for this Sheyi
You are very welcome

I always encourage people to sacrifice chasing money in the first few months or even years if they can and get the professional experience they need through voluntary work or internship. Unfortunately, a lot of people settle for low paying jobs because it's easy to get. Even if you have to take a low paying job, at least make a feasible, written down plan on how to progress into your desired field.
I agree -i have seen so many people that i have tried to talk to to aim higher. but they are so bogged down with the low paying jobs and have bills that they are just not motivated. And seriously, i completely understand cos it happened to me too. Luckily i schooled in Canada so i already understood the volunteer mindset and that really helped me. God help us!

I am a psychologist by calling. Excellent video Sis. The term I now use to sum up the points you raised is "CIVILIZATIONAL DISORIENTATION". Unlike the Asians who come in with their own continuous civilization pretty much intact and stick to it, Africans came into the white man's world in chains or with little more than a bag full of hopes. And soon that sense of awe turns into disillusionment at which point survival instincts and basic character take over. In the final analysis, this salient problem can only be fixed back home. We have to TRANSFORM and learn quickly. Even our "foundational" black cousins in America, Canada, etc need a viable Africa to fully reclaim their humanity and dignity. Ire o
Seems we are in for a long ride. I don't see us transforming and learning anytime soon...but who knows?
Thank you for this❤
Thank you too
Such an interesting analysis. I agree with everything you said 🤗

Black tax is for sure a thing. As much as we say there is no community support, which is true in some certain extent. Because imagine you have an uncle or aunty or friend who has been aboard for the longest of time forming busy to avoid interacting with you because they will think you travel to abroad to put your problems on them. So the loop continues old ones hide from the new ones vase vasa
I see your point there and we probably need to dig deep into why this is happening and how to fix it
You’re definitely right about this tropics!

Also, I agree, I didn’t know black tax was a thing but that’s so true. To further your points, I’d add that black people, unfortunately, don’t like to see other black people ‘make it’ out of the struggle so in the UK, black business owners are a little stuck. Also sometimes retraining is required to really make anything of the qualifications you got back home. Finally, I’d add that some black people are to rigid in their thinking. I don’t know if an African mentality, for the most part, will get you very far if you DONT live in Africa. Okay, I’ve just finished the video after writing my comment, I guess I didn’t contribute anything 😅😅 Good job
☺ - all my thoughts exactly. we are rigid in our thinking for sure and not wanting to see other 'black people' succeed is really so sad - so sad

Because most of us get the worse jobs. Even with a University degree. Get a great job for black people is hard. In general get a good job is not about your skills but network, luck and God blessing. After 19 years living abroad and 12 working in different countries as Engineer I am flighting to get my financial stability. 😊 It is really hard to me😊

Am telling you.....emotional blackmail
I am living in Europe, I agree with some of the things you said about why Africans in diaspora are relatively poorer compared to their Asian and Arab counterparts, but I see contradiction in your statements. If some of Africans are poor or earning too little, financial knowledge is less of a priority. You seem to focus too much on financial knowledge, I will prefer to focus on skill, skill and more skills, that is what most Africans have refused to do compared to the Chinese and Indian (you hardly find a Chinese and Indians in night club when their academic performance is so poor, but most Africans will spend the whole weekend in nigh club showing their dancing skills, but failing in the most critical areas: Engineering and science). They want quick money, studying very hard like the Chinese and the Indians is difficult for most Africans to do, they think it is a waste of time, they are happy with certificates but certificates do not equate to skill (one can have PhD but fail to solve engineering problem in his engineering field). For those who have come to study, focus on your education, throw in everything you have to understand what you are studying. This advice was giving to me by my Chinese flat mate, he also told that we Africans are working so hard to earn money instead of studying hard. Of course you can work but remember the big picture, knowledge, prioritize it!
I get your point but what good is skill without the financial knowledge to manage the proceeds from using the skill? Abd i agree we have refused to up our skill level. you are so right about the certificates though - we chase that too much!! Hmm - the BIG picture - amazing insights. Thank you so much!!
@@dontgobroketv..ehh....you have the points well thought out...thanks... ...hope our ppl listen and take in what you say...
West Africans (particularly Nigerians) have the highest number of students in STEM per population percentage, both in the UK and the US. Nigerians are also the only Black group who outearn foundational white Americans in the US. Financial literacy is a must if the money needs to be conserved. This is where they fall short behind their Asian counterparts.

You really hit the nail on the head. We need to be job creators, black task is sure to stay but with a limit balance, but I think Africans can work together to make business work but not Nigerians we have a way of sowing discord. I stand to be corrected

The idea of churches teaching financial literacy is a great one. However, it is not about to happen anytime soon. Churches are the number one leeches of finances. Anyone who becomes financially literate realizes the financial con they have been playing and severely reduces their contributions to churches or even cuts them off altogether. It is in the best interest of churches to keep people financially illiterate.

i hear you
I'm from Somalia living in abroad, and we have same here 😂
Wow- we africans need to bond together and stop this
It's great to hear what you have mentioned but remember also the indigenous are poor as well they depend on social security. Immigrants take time to settle once they regularise their stay they are bogged with issues such as child care, shift pattern, low qualifications and lack of Job opportunities, long hours of work and poor working conditions. African immigrants will face tough life because they are indebted back at home and abroad at some instances you find yourself working hand to mouth. Racism is a factor as well both socially and economically likewise ethnicity and nepotism. But having mentioned all that you can still succeed, it depends how you measure success. Example if you want a big Mercedes Benz and a second hand Ford car the choice is yours as you will incur years of car finance.
All round it is about choices. We do have a lot of responsibilities home and abroad but God help us
