Why Natural Latex Mattresses Are So Expensive | So Expensive | Insider Business

One of the most expensive mattresses on the market is made from natural latex. It’s hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and more durable than memory foam. You can buy a memory-foam mattress for a few hundred dollars, but natural latex mattresses usually cost over $1,500 and can exceed $2,000. Latex sap from rubber trees is in high demand from dozens of industries, including car tires. This high demand has caused deforestation and displacement of farmers in places like Cambodia. Some mattress companies source their latex from organic and fair-trade-certified farms in places like Guatemala, but the latex from these farms comes at a premium compared to the latex from noncertified plantations. We explored why natural latex mattresses are so expensive.

Editor's note: We're clarifying a statement made at 0:22. While natural latex is resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, the latex itself can still be considered an allergen. Avocado does not claim that its mattresses are hypoallergenic and recognizes that they might not be appropriate for those with an existing latex allergy. We regret the error.

    • It's all markup. You can get a premium king sized 3" foam topper for $350-500, one could build a king mattress for less than 1500 with the best quality possible. One could build a budget queen for less than $800 that would make most mattresses blush, let alone mattresses of similar pricing. Also finding the pictured foam in this video is Dunlop processed, which is considered lesser by many mattress folks.

    • I once ordered one for roughly 1200€, made in Germany. I sent it back because it was heavy as hell and not firm. I hadn't that on mind and somebody should keep it on mind when buying a latex mattress. Getting it from the floor into the bed is a pain in the ass and almost impossible alone without ripping something. The mattress is heavy and not firm. Feels like handling a dead body. And flipping the mattress - which one should do regularly according to the manufacturer - is a pain in the ass, too. And I am a guy. I dare to say it's impossible for women and elderly to handle those mattresses without extreme hassle. Plus, the mattress was way too soft. I ordered medium degree of firmness and I had back pain which i never had before. I sleep on my back and for this hard mattresses are better. Maybe the hard one would have been better, who knows. But the weight of latex mattresses is a huge drawback.

    • @@awemowe2830 Agreed, I purchased a SleepEZ Roma latex mattress and while it is heavy as hell once you have it set-up you can easily rotate or flip it. All you have to do is do one section first and the other section second. Latex unlike other matresses can easily be folded since it's soo flexable. For example, if I need to flip the mattress, you simply flip one section on top of the other (like a sandwich) and pull the second section from beneath it and that's it. It's that simple to flip a latex mattress. Because of the flexibility it's much simpler to flip a latex mattress than a traditional mattress. Rotating it is even easier.

I found a company called sleep on latex and was able to customize the width. I went with them because their mattress is 100% natural... all they use is the latex... no fillers, chemical stabilizers, etc. I flip it once a month. • @@edgarhernandez8003 It is springs, but has a latex layer on top. I think it's far superior to a regular mattress for so many reasons. To list a few, it's all natural so there's no chemicals. Think about it, your face is in it for 8 hours a night; what you breathe in and have contact with is important (at least I think). In addition, it stays cool. I have a boxspring with slats underneath so that my body heat can escape. I never get too hot. You may notice that you go to sleep comfortably, but wake up and you're super hot. That's because your body heat gets trapped and it gets hotter and hotter. Not an issue with the proper mattress and box spring. I looked into getting a pure latex mattress and they are extremely expensive and I heard they can sag in the middle over time. I think quality springs are good and springs serve a valuable function. I did tons of research before buying it years ago (been so happy with it) and it seemed to have the best of everything and check all the boxed. I have recommended it to other people and I know of at least 2 people I recommended it to that got it and they are as happy with it as I am. • I personally prefer the texture and spring of Talalay process latex foam rubber over the Dunlop process. Having said that, if you are to have an entirely latex foam mattress, then you would still want your core to be a Dunlop process latex, as it is typically more robust and supportive compared to Talalay process latex. It is also cheaper. Just use Talalay process latex for the top layer to add additional softness and comfort, since it is able to deform more before rebounding compared to Dunlop process latex.

    • Didn't understand 😢

      @Zara-ZAF@Zara-ZAF10 ай бұрын
    • @@Zara-ZAF Talalay process latex is made with even fewer additives and uses a different mechanism for foam retention during the curing phase which results in a more open and compressible foam structure. You can sink into the foam more for any given "softness" of foam before it begins to spring back and support you. So it feels wildly different than Dunlop process latex, which can feel a bit like a rubbery polyurethane foam sometimes. Talalay process latex is more floppy and has a lot more give before it springs back, so it is a rather novel experience when you get your first pillow made from it. I highly recommend it. The one I've got is from Malouf, though there are other brands who make them that aren't as pricey. Just expect a Talalay process latex pillow to cost aroung $60 USD or more, depending on size, firmness, loft, and any additional marketing buzzwords.

I paid around 3k for mine (Canadian Dollar), and do the proper rotations and other maintenance required, it is going strong after 2 years, and I have had no sleep issues since. well worth the investment, Also if you are going to get this get a really good (preferably natural) mattress protector as a base-layer before the bed sheets. The only cons are it is super heavy and really hard to move it because its really hard to control it, and there is that rubbery smell that takes a couple of weeks to mellow down. Do the proper research to make sure who ever is selling you it is selling you %100 organic latex certified mattress.

In fact most families in India and even in Kerala (which leads India’s rubber production) use coir or cotton based mattresses and even cheap or expensive foam mattresses are such recent introductions. But even so $2600 for a latex foam mattress is unimaginable here. Even rich folks pay max $300-800 for their mattress.
