  • Buying used gear is epic, but I would recommend to never buy used batteries, SD cards or external hard drives. Those are the items that are the most subject to wear&tear, limited charge/write cycles and if you're paying for it, you want to use it to its max, and have the best chance to not run into reliability issues soon after purchase. I feel not enough people point this out.

    • The fear with buying new gear for a noob (speaking for myself) is that I don’t know what defects to look out for. Would sometimes rather pay full price with warranty for the piece of mind. That said, buying preowned gear definitely saves you money if you know what to look out for.

  • Love your channel and energy. I've been shooting professionally since the mid 1990's, and your advice here is rock solid and should be required watching for anyone looking at getting into professional photography. I wasted a lot of time and money learning through trial and error on what you have shared here in a short 9:41... Listen to this 15x if you're starting out, and do not deviate from the advice. Especially about learning how to creat masterpieces by replicating existing work. Once you learn the hows and whys an established artist or work of art "works," you're 90% of the way there. But that unfortunately can honestly take some time.

  • This is the first video of yours I've seen. It really came through at the right time. I'm 26 and have worked trade jobs and was enlisted ever since I started working. Even as a kid, my summer jobs were washing semis or doing loading and unloading for a trucking company. I was raised basically being told men do hard, labor-intensive trade jobs. I fell in love with photography about a year ago. I've recently started classes at my local community College and am hoping to make a career out of not only photography but digital art but even with that I've felt weirdly lost with it and have felt like quitting but this video really helped for some reason.

  • A5100. 24.2MP sensor, touch-focus, great AF, easier on the battery. 1080p60 only, but easy to upscale and easy on the memory vards. when it comes to lenses maybe you choose the Sony 18-135mm lens which is AF, and some excellent manual lenses like the TTArtisan 10mm F2 and the 7Artisans 60mm F2.8 Macro. that covers pretty much everything and you learn how to orchestrate aperture and shutter speed. for the lowest price possible. another recommendation for portraits is the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 for 150 bucks. yes, the manuals are that cheap now and are metal/glass builds with excellent coatings. sharpness, bokeh, aberrations, vignetting, flaring - you will be blown away at this price point.

Since they specialize in photography they know the gear and what to check when someone sells to them. Of course when it’s time to upgrade you can also sell the gear back to them.

  • Just stepped up from a Canon 1300D to a Canon R7 with Tamron 18-400 lens (the Tamron 55-300 broke inside the camera somehow and took out both so insurance paid 2/3 the cost of the new setup and I'd about outgrew the 1300D. What a change .... wow. My preferred theme is lightning photography and it's been damn hard on the 1300D with native included 18-55 lens to get crisp shots but I have a few good ones. Unfortunately there was no way to run in bulb mode AND control the aperture on that camera meaning YMMV. Looking forward to playing with the new setup, it's got some superb photos of rose buds etc already. My current learning phase is focal point (I noticed some of my rose flower photos with the new r7 was super crisp on the flower but it had blurred the background and by pure accident made an average photo an excellent photo. So I need to work on that and use it. Then I need to go back to aperture again as I've forgotten my little work I'd done there and didn't have enough control before of it where now with the better camera I do. In saying all this, I've had some DAMN GOOD shots just from my Samsung Note10+ 5G in a clamp mount on the tripod with a 20second open setting and using the Samsung watch to tap every 23ish seconds to start again. It's limited a little in control options but is unbelievable for the size and package still. I understand why most don't bother buying extra cameras now unless they want that little more like I do. I've gone from point and click crappy Kodak film cameras worth like $20 from Kmart at the time, to a crappy 4.3mp digicam just so I don't have development costs, to a meh 10mp digicam (now the wife's because it's really point and shoot no pro type modes), to a 13mp DSLR of ok stature to now the R7 and I've learned a little along the way on each step. I think if I were to step from film straight up to an R7 I'd be completely lost where now I've at least only got a few "yeah better learn more about that" points. The used market here in Australia is a little meh now I think because 95%+ of the pop just use phones.

And to learn that a mistake might be good idea in certain circumstances. Having to do photography 'right' is an idea created by content creators and teachers, and of course certain pros. Why should I study 1 or 2 styles only? In order to replicate those quickly?

I know quite a lot already just haven't have dedicated camera gears, I can cover ultrawide to super tele, the A7RV has the unique 4 ways screen and croppable high res sensor, the tele with extension tube and magnification filter can get good ultra macro, travel, everyday and so on covered too, that camcorder can attach macro and even more tele too. But now I have a question, for me Tamron lenses has a golden rendering look and Sony lenses has cooler rendering look, is there profile setting I can set for each lens so the SOOC photos and videos will looks the same if not nearly identical?

    • Let me put a little bit more emphasis on exactly what I mean when I said what I said. I'm a local here based on where I live. We've seen the MOST popular spots being photographed over and over. Its saturated. And thats the problem with Photography now. Even as a beginner I wouldn't try to replicate other peoples work, as people have different shooting styles, of course obviously as a beginner you wouldn't know this. Hence why I said I personally wouldn't recommend this to any new photographer whether that be a friend or family member. The inspiration is not there (you're basically just copying homework). I get what you mean, but in the long term its useless. Just go out and shoot as much as you can. Get hands on experience. FIND what you LIKE and just shoot. Like over and over different things try new things once you get really into photography. Find WHAT YOU THINK looks good and do that. That keeps the hobby interesting and less mundane. @@KC-in9px

  • On your first PRO gigs, make sure do overs are an option. Imagine the nightmare of messing up a wedding shoot due to lack of experience. No do-overs on a wedding shoot.

  • Why was the website introduced at the end of the video? I would assume less people make it to the end of the video. Unless you get a higher value for the group that does see the advertisement at the end. Maybe higher click through? Also, do you work with a group on this channel or are you a one man show?
