    • Yes there was some risky material there but the worst was Martin Lawrence in 1994. They banned him from the show and that episode was never aired again unedited. I had the pleasure of seeing it live with my mom and sister. It was very uncomfortable watching with them. Martin talked about women not "washing their asses properly" and giving women oral sex while they had a yeast infection and "coming up with dough on your damn lip". It was hilarious but bad.....My mother actually wrote a letter to NBC about how offended she was...she doesn't do stuff like that so that was a big deal.

    • @@LM-yd1hh No. If Louis' jokes did not offend and did not ride the fine line between being offensive, you would not find them funny at all. Comedy is supposed to push social bounderies, yes, but that means those bounderies have to be there in the first place. You should be happy there are people who get offended at jokes.

    • @Gatti if someone is impersonating someone then they're usually making fun of that person. If they aren't making fun of that person in some way then it's not funny. It's talented, but not funny. Therefore the impersonator would have to be offending someone, In this case the person being impersonated. All good comedy has to push some type of boundary, if they don't then it's just some lame ass story being told

I made my wife watch it with me and I will never forget the look on her face getting more and more upset when he was doing the child molester bit. One of the best moments of my life. • Sometimes when I watch this I get a bit choked up. I wouldn't say he's my favorite comedian, but this set is really something special. Every topic is 3rd rail. The jokes hit hard, but the reason why it is special is it is something no other comedian could do. It is someone at the top of their game drawing a line between them and every other standup comedian, and the line is real. Bargatze, Burr, Chappelle, Bamford, Mulaney, Gulman, Stanhope, or name your favorite stand up couldn't get away with this. He has to go so far over the line, and yet get you to excuse him for it. Norm would probably get a laugh from the folks at home with it, but I could see the crowd icing even him for this one. The laugh on "How do you think I feel, this is my last show probably," is so big, and shows the crowd is so aware of the joke, the logic of the joke, and the implications of the joke. It is a dark observation about one of the worst things human beings do, somehow made into something so funny. Louie is so acutely aware of just how much grace the audience is willing to give him. Seeing someone like this, at their best, being uniquely great and at the top of their field, is something worth marveling at. Other times I watch this and it just makes me laugh.

  • Has to be one of the most daring and most brilliant SNL opening monologues ever. He got the audience to laugh at three of the most taboo subjects in America "racism, religious hatred and child molesters". He may be banned from SNL but that stand-up routine will never be forgotten. Louis CK is our generations Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor.

    • W Lee Right on, W Lee. Apparently Hiram thinks comedic craft is tapping the caps lock button on a computer keypad. But to your point of CK taking on the 3 taboo subjects of "racism, religious hatred and child molesters;" I'm assuming the "religious hatred" subject you're referring to is CK's bit on Israel/Palestine. I don't consider that subject to be about religious hatred, but that's besides the point I wanna make here. Sure, racism and pedophilia are kinda taboo and it's of course difficult to do genuinely funny, insightful stand-up on those topics. CK does it here. Burr, Chappelle, Silverman have done it. However, imo, Israel/Palestine is a MUCH more taboo subject than the other two, and is also more difficult to make funny. Palestine has been essentially my concern for quite a while so it's very difficult to get me to laugh on the topic. But forgetting the whole "comedy craft" thing for a minute, I'm absolutely blown away that CK even broached that subject, let alone gave it 2 and 1/2 minutes, in his LIVE stand up from NEW YORK. It took major league balls to do what he did last night. Evidenced by the nervous laughter he got from the joke about what Israel does w/ the missiles we sell Israel (i.e.: kill 500 children in a few weeks last summer...). Or this: "The little one's like Palestine 'cuz she always gets screwed. She gets the worst deals." Brass balls saying that on live TV. How long 'til ADL and the Brandeis Center put CK on their list of dangerous anti-Semites? As simplistic as the bit might have been in terms of the actual conflict (unavoidable of course in 2 minutes...), my hat's off to Louis CK for not cutting that from the monologue. If he had to have it approved before air I've got to assume he got some major push back on it. Anyway, sorry to "derail." The biggest laughs for me came w/ the pedophile bit. I think I woke my neighbors. No seriously. Absolutely hilarious...

    • He's often discussed how the seemingly off the cuff, "improvised" looking additions to certain jokes are in fact designed to look that way from the very start. But I don't think that would exactly apply to some of the anxiety you see/hear in his face/voice in this monologue. He knows he's on the precipice of either hearing them all laugh or boo & it's just as likely for either to happen, especially that last bit... After all it's not just him fuckin' around at a random comedy club where the stakes are low & he can experiment, it's a friggin 40th anniversary SNL season finale.
