In this video I wanted to give you a tour of my new home.
As many of you will know, I moved house this week. I wanted an extra bedroom and some outdoor space - this new place provides both of these things, and so much more.
I hope you will enjoy having a little look around - I can’t wait to start a new chapter in this house and share it with you!

    • I agree completely. I like individual rooms, where you can shut the door if you need to. Also, you can have different decor in each room instead of one unified theme. Who wants someone to walk in the front door and see that you haven't cleaned up from baking cookies yet? In fact, I've read that some homes now have two kitchens. One is like the show clean kitchen and the other one is where all the dirty stuff is done. It also keeps the smells from the kitchen getting into the rest of the house, which was a complaint that I've read about. The dirty kitchen, of course, is not part of the open concept. How crazy is that? Just close off the kitchen.

  • Hi Nicholas, Thank you so much for inviting us into your new home. Love the facade to the block. You have a lovely space to decorate and experiment with new decor ideas. Definitely need a warmer colour on the walls to show off the colours of your furniture. Poor Sophie will be a little unsettled but will soon adjust with you by her side. I must say she is looking beautiful after her grooming. I hope you get to use that beautiful wallpaper. It brings the garden into the room and with the addition of mirrors, plants and beautiful lighting it will be magnificent. Hope you get better soon. Some good nourishing soups would do you the world of good. That you have an outdoor space to entertain in is marvelous and lends itself to so much.Until we meet again, take care of yourself.

  • Hope you are feeling much better by now. Your new flat is quite nice. I think the wallpaper will be a lovely choice for your dining room. I'm rather partial to wallpaper myself, and think it a shame how rarely it's used in properties here in the USA. The front courtyard garden sounds wonderful. In addition to potted plants, perhaps you could knock together some timber boxes for raised bed gardening. I designed and built a small raised bed herb garden for my grandmother years ago. It included wire frame towers for architectural interest and up which I trained ivy and climbing roses. The herbs were useful for cooking and, if careful plant selection is made, can supply some simple country style floral arrangements. Your new place affords you ample opportunity to hone your decorating skills as you settle in, and I wish you and Sophie both health and happiness in your new home.

  • 'Glad to see you've coped with the actual move, in spite of feeling unwell; I hope you're feeling much better. Excellent room sizes for a city apartment; high ceilings and light are real bonuses, especially for a basement flat. If you own the flat, just paint the kitchen tiles for now and re-tile when you can; if it's rented, one idea might be to get a handyman to cut some 'tile effect' board to fit around the switches, etc., and simply clip this into place to cover the red tiles. Not ideal but it would, at least, conceal the offending items!

  • Congratulations on your new spacious home, Nicolas. Because there is so much to do while you're still recovering, nice and easy going is the best approach. Relaxed efforts contribute greatly to health and safeguards one's sanity. --------- Could not agree with you more about the color white, which has always felt stark and cold to me. Even in bathrooms, I need my sinks, toilets, and tubs to be that gentle relaxed off-white creamy-light-beige color. The same color selection goes for wall plates, light switch covers, electrical outlets and their covers. Additionally, dimmers installed for every lamp, light fixture, and track lighting always makes for perfect control of light, mood, and atmosphere. Thank you for letting us view your new home. Good luck, much happiness, and many success's to you in your new home, Nicolas. Always...

  • Congratulations! What a lovely home you've chosen, truly lovely inside & out! If I may dare to be so bold to offer a suggestion (my 2cents worth)? The feeling of a front entrance opening right into the main living space is a bit too exposed. However, if you simply add a (I know it will be a beauty w/ your eye) 'divider screen' on the open rm. side of Ent. door (floor to ceiling is best) with the top of the screen duplicating the light transom above your nice Ent. door (so that you don't loose any of that beautiful natural light). This will create a repose upon entering (add to safety/privacy) and afford you an added wall & or corner niche on living room facing side of screen (perhaps adding a chaise & small lamp table angled into newly created corner ... The hutch would then be well placed opposite the fireplace wall to balance (height & bulk) & with possibly two lovey chairs or potted trees anchoring each side of hutch which will also maintain elongating wall length/width. I pray you don't mind my imput. Your fab new digs simply inspired me to the point of compulsory response, please forgive. Best wishes!

  • Love your beautiful “Cottage”. (It is nothing like US “basement apartments”), it’s so light and airy. Can’t wait to see you put you elegant, sophisticated touch on each room. Now that you’re in, take your time and rest up and get over this illness. I’ll be watching each week to see your progress. Cheers.

  • Hi Nicholas wish you well in your new place. Really looks great! Please includes us in your planning before you start with a room. Would like to learn from you. Functionality is so important when you do that! So, looking forward to that. The dining room paper really is going to make that room very special. Few suggestions to ponder on: the mirror on the mantelpiece is to big. Would rather put a smaller golden framed one (typical French) on and put the big mirror on the wall between your front door and the window with a beautiful Vass on a table under the mirror to dress a foyer entrance. Then move your beautiful cupboard, that is currently next to your front door in the corner where your book case is to make that space cozy. You can then put a chair near by to sat on work and still be able to see the street and people moving by. I believe in cozy corners in a room LOL. That big wall opposite your couch needs a statement!!! Would dress is with your beautiful botanical pictures and a beautiful darker table underneath. I struggle with mixing darker and lighter furniture. Maybe you can give us some tips. Those round picture frames either on both sides of the fire place OR in the dining room! Please take us step by step through the planning of a room. Would lov to learn from you. Sorry for the longgggg essay LOL>

  • Oooh, wallpaper for the dining room! How absolutely brilliant - gorgeous wallpaper, perfect for the room! Could I suggest you find an open shelf/rack that you could place atop your bureau in the dining room and place your china on the shelves? Your china is so pretty - it's a shame to put it away in a dark cupboard. LOVE the courtyard. I can anticipate you will turn it into a very charming space, indeed. It's hard to convince others, isn't it, if you're ill with something other than CoVid. Humanity has lost its ability to reason and has become fearful of the slightest sneeze. So unfortunate. Glad you a feeling a wee bit better, even if drained. Trade secret of moms, dear one; chicken noodle soup with a rich broth truly is restorative when you've been wretchedly ill. It causes one to think that they will indeed live to see another day. Warm regards from El Paso, TX

  • Please get well soon !!! It seems you are not stressing over things which will help you heal ! On another note … THE WALLPAPER FOR THE DINING ROOM IS PERFECT !!! It will create a cozy garden like feel and when guests glance out the window to your courtyard ,filled with greenery and flowers , there will be a seamless connection from inside to out !! As for the red tiles … I once painted some unsightly tiles with a special enamel paint and they came out perfect ! Thank you so much for sharing your new place in spite of feeling so unwell ! • Prayers answered--NOT Covid! So good to see Sophie--haven't seen her for a while...Best think for colds/flu--lots of chicken soup...big advantage to basement flats--they are warm in the winter and cool in the summer and not high energy bills...you are fortunate to have so much bright light--if you do not wish to see the bridge outside the dining room, you can put shears over the window and still have nice light...you might wish to paper one or two walls and paint the other 2 or 3 walls (dining room)...also, nice large mirrors up the light effect and make the room look larger...if you do your bedroom first, it might give you a boost emotionally and give you a nice place to go at night while you are working on the rest of the flat...you had just done such a nice bedroom in the last flat...your courtyard is fantastic and will be a great place to entertain for about 5 months a year--you have enough room to put a substantial outdoor dining table (concrete or iron is nice), as well as a grill (if you like to grill) and even a small fire pit and seating area...you can also hang small twinkle lights for a very nice magical effect...I hope you and Sophie are very happy here and you will have lots of new friends there soon with your special picnics...dts/usa

  • Nicholas what a fabulous new home, it's utterly beautiful and so so spacious and to have a front garden all yours amazes me, in the city center, such lovely privacy too. I wanted to mention there are stick on "tiles"one can obtain, some are very nice and realistic, in various hues and finishes and there are also companies that make stickers that look like tiles, so one can remove them. If applied really well, they can look great too. There are also stick on finishes for countertops and I've seen ones that actually look good if applied well. It's truly a stunning space and to be in the city center with so much room amazes me lol. Best wishes to you and little Sophie in your new home, it will be very happy for you!

  • I really like your new apartment. Can't wait to see it painted and wallpapered. I would strongly suggest that you invest in a water pump and a back up power generator. I'm sure you've seen the horrible flooding on the East coast of the United States. This global warming has me very concerned, to the point that l'm thinking of selling my home for fear of a flash flood. May God bless you and protect you in your new apartment. You have such wonderful furnishings, it's best to err on the side of caution. And of course, renters insurance is a must anywhere these days. Although I did notice the windows are protected. But these desperate people define, "where there's a will there's the means!" Get better soon! Your friend in Kansas City, Tom. 😃🍀🎉🎶🇺🇸

  • That you for the tour of your new home. It is so lovely and a little cottage almost as you say. Nice to have the separate dining area, it will be so cozy for dinners in the evenings. You really lucked out on this place. Love the flooring too. So sorry you had such a bad time with that flu and hope you are feeling better and then on top of that having to move. All looks so lovely. Perhaps some sort of Persian type rug in the kitchen to tone down the red tiles, may make it cozy. Can’t wait until next Friday and how you progress with your move. All the best to you. Sophie has lots of space to wander now and nice having the outdoor space that you both can use in warm weather to dine or relax.

  • Love your lovely new home, I’m sure you will turn it into a beautiful cottage . I also loved your outside space very much! I’m sure you will turn it into a sweet escape as the vineyards I often visit in Paso Robles wine country California. The Hotel Cheval there has a long courtyard with little nooks n crannies with seating you might want to incorporate. Tiny fireplaces just adorable. I’m your case you might use a small fire pit with chairs and snuggly cashmere throw blankets . Your outdoor area leads me to believe you will make it a paradise . So happy for you and I wish you a very blessed new home! Watching you from my California and Arizona homes, always looking for great entertaining and decorating tips . Feel better soon, take care of yourself and don’t rush to get your house in order. Love and best wishes .

  • Hi Nicholas, I just thought I might give you an idea to cover up the red tiles in the kitchen. Here where I live in Australia, they have business's that make pressed tin sheets. They have gorgeous designs on them & people use them for many reasons. You can have them attached to your ceiling, & then paint them to complement you're decor. The finished product then looks like a stunning plaster ceiling, you can use these for a backboard as such behind you're bed. Which comes back to you're red tiles, you can cover them up with these tin sheets, they may sound weird to you, but trust me they look stunning. The designs you can get are phenomenal, one example could be a fleur de lis pattern. Some people leave them in their natural state, & others paint them. Hope this makes sense to you. Love you're new home, I was originally from the UK & have been back visiting 6 times. Absolutely love Edinburgh, such a beautiful place. Hope you're on the mend soon. Love Love from Australia to the wonderful UK 🇭🇲🇬🇧💖💚😍💙💛❤🌹🌹🥂🍾💕💕💋
