Riding and Reviewing the new 2021 Burton Step On X with the Ion Step On boot. Buy this binding here: www.radioboardshop.com/burton...
The latest Burton Step On Binding is made with 50% carbon fiber, 50% nylon blend that adds for a slight increase in response. The Step On X stiffness is felt most when riding them on an EST channel board. Due to the stiffer components in the base tray, the Step On X does not peel away from the board as much as the regular Step On binding does.

Good to see someone reviewing boards who can actually ride
And actually knows what they're talking about. His remarks about the baseplate stiffness and the binding flexing away from the board(or not in the case of the x baseplate) were super insightful.
@@jonbrown9490 A great review. Burton Reflex binding and baseplates are designed to allow an amount of flex. The EST even has a hinge system built in to allow similar flexing. So I guess its down to individual preference as to how much flex you want.
Est is the best is is a shame that you can't mount it on other boards, seen some people riping the chanel out and it's get loos pretty quickly
You probably dont care but if you are stoned like me atm you can stream pretty much all the new movies on Instaflixxer. Have been binge watching with my gf for the last couple of months xD
@Alex Liam definitely, been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D
This is the best quality review on KZhead about these bindings.
Thank you, much appreciated!
this is the best review on youtube about step-on bindings. thank you for helping me with my decision making on whether step-ons or straps bindings. again thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great Review that was well explained. Like your Videos. keep on keepin ON.
Much appreciated!
Nice review! You ride the way I would love to ride!
Thanks man, stay tuned for more!
Great review, very detailed...thanks for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
I need to show you my step-on hack! I extended the lever with a pull to not have to bend down too far to release. Great for us older riders.
I'd love to see it. Email me some pics searchofsnow@gmail.com
Seriously considered getting them when I was at Radio a few weeks ago but stuck with the Genesis Bindings you guys sold me. Didn't want to replace my boots.
You should demo a pair next time you're here
You will be able to get a Genesis Step On for the 21/22 season.
You wont regret it if you do bite the bullet. They’re an awesome investment in convenience.
Really great review! Have you tried other boots with regular Step On binding .... Swath, Photon? Would love to hear your thoughts on those.
No, the Ions are the only boot that has enough support and performance for me. Everything else is just too soft.
I have the Photon boots and after 4 seasons on them I’m definitely craving something more responsive and stiff of which the only option so far is the Ion. I would agree that the other models feel too soft including the DC Control which is stiffness rated at 6/10. Another option will be the 21/22 DC Judge which will be offered in Step On and is stiffness rated at 8/10
Last year I rode with the DC control step in boots. They are very good and comfortable. This year I picked the Burton Swath boots.
@@SearchofSnowboarding I have 2020 step ons and started with photons. If you’re a bigger stronger rider , they’re quite soft. Got ions and won’t look back. This is the way. 😎
@@Bohdisattva326 For sure, Ions all the way
thx man! how do u feel the deep thinker actully? thinking about exactly same setup this year!
It felt really good. I will say it was not the best conditions the day I rode this setup, so while all though it was a little hard to tell because of that it handle the icy conditions well. I usually have a much better opinion of a board once I've ridden it with my personal boots and bindings that I am used to though.
I have the normal Step On, that means that traditional boards with 4 hole will ride better than burtom EST? Im looking for some magne traction boards because ice is crazy here.
Putting your Step Ons on a 4 hole rather a burton channel just means that the binding will not lift away from the board as much on a 4 hole board. The step ons work great on any board. If you want magnetraction look at Lib Tech. Hope that answered your question. Thanks, and don't forget to subscribe!
I ride with ankle and toe strap as tight as i can get and then one more click(union super pro), did you feel your heel come up or toes rise too much with the setup when carving?
The main locking mechanism is on the heel, so your heel does not move up at all. Your toes don't really rise up either
Can you use these on a regular board. I bought a board with these and I'm wondering if I could use regular ones one there.
By regular board do you mean a 4x4 insert mounting pack? Step Ons can be ridden on any board
I don't know why the step ons are so interesting to me, but I've watched so many reviews on then without considering buying them
You should definitely consider it
Hello, have you tried DC boots with step on binding? i want to know what is difference between burton and dc boots
The DC control step on has a narrow fit. It is also a pretty soft boot. Check it out here: kzhead.info/sun/jL6TntKmnaGFnZ8/bejne.html
So are the base model and the X similar in stiffness/responsiveness to a regular board? I’m confused by your comment at 5:40. Thanks love the show!
Mounting on a 4-hole pattern they are similar response underfoot, but the X is still slightly stiffer in the highback
Makes sense. Would it make sense to own both?
@@willboutte Yeah you could for sure. Or just start with one X and if you like it, get another
Do you hear the clicking sounds on the boots/binding of the X like you do on the older step-ons?
I didn't have any clicking on this setup on this day
They haven't changed the boots and the cleat shape on the binding so it will start clicking eventually. Not sure why it's a problem, if it didn't click there wouldn't be any play in the binding. It's annoying for like 2 runs then you get used to it
@@th3oryO Yeah it seems like sometimes they click sometimes they don't. Personally, I have never experienced it
Nice review! How did you get the Step On X bindings with a black highback? I thought the Step On X (with the carbon blend) was only available with the white highback? Did you strip the paint off?
You're right, It was only available for this year with the white high back. I was riding a sample pair which were black, so that might be what they look like for next year.
The white camo pants - who makes those pls? I gotta have em.
They're my favorite! Strafe Outerwear makes them and they are called the Nomad Bib in the Aspen Camo colorway www.strafeouterwear.com/collections/mens-pants/products/nomad-bib-pant
@@SearchofSnowboarding Yes! Much thanks.
What camera are you using to film the riding?
The GoPro Max, it's a 360 camera
How does the pole you’re holding disappear? Does the Go pro do that or is it done in editing?
@@timjordanart The software of the camera does it on its own
hi i currently ride a 10 year burton vapour with diodes - looking to change and cant decide if the X binding is worth the extra money - i only ride once a year for a week due to where i live - so will i really benefit from them..
If you only shred once a year, I would say maybe just save the money. The regular Step Ons are amazing too
@@SearchofSnowboarding Thats what i figured - i don't really think im going to get the benefit of the X's - thanks for the info keep safe n well
I have been riding Step On about 30 days a season since 17/18 and just got the Step On X this year. I would agree that if you’re not spending A LOT of time on them, you won’t notice the benefit of the X version.
What goggles are you rockin?
Oakley Lineminer Kazu Signature Model
Do you think regular step ons would go well with a k2 afterblack?
Totally
@@SearchofSnowboarding would you also know if it would make the clicking noise on that board?
The clicking noise is an issue independent of what board the binding is on. The noise is something that can happen from the movement of the toe cleats of the boot against the binding. I didn't have any clicking when I filmed this video.
Have you tried adding forward lean? I have last year's reflex step ons, and it seems like the forward lean maxes out between F2 and F3. Do you see the same on these?
I did use forwad lean on this setup but only like F2.5 so I don't really know if they max out at F3
@@SearchofSnowboarding thanks! I guess it's probably going to be the same. The official burton video that shows how to set forward lean goes to F4. But I don't think the recent models do that. Great explanation around how the binding behaves on the board btw!
My original release 17/18 Step On bindings go to F4 on forward lean. I have a pair of 19/20 Step On as well as 20/21 Step On X and can confirm the forward lean goes only to F3.
@@jhrycun thanks! I've been trying to confirm this for 2 months now, and you're the first person who does! I wonder why they reduced the amount of forward lean possible? In your older bindings, is it hard to get two clicks with forward lean set to F4, even if the footbed is set at half a size bigger than your boots?
@@anawara glad to help. I can see that my 17/18 highback is slightly different than my 19/20 highback so it is possible that it was simply something different in the production process and was unintentional on Burton’s behalf. As people begin to get comfortable with Step On and as more experienced riders start to use them, I’m hearing a little more complaint about forward lean adjustability. The highback adjustment screw is essentially just a normal screw (Burton obviously uses one that is flat and marked with numbers but a normal screw of the same diameter will fit). I rode the chair with someone who replaced their screws with longer ones from a hardware store to get that additional highback adjustment. I did not notice any issues stepping in and engaging Level 1 and Level 2 of the heel cleat with my bindings at F4. I’m riding those bindings with 17/18 Photon boots (size 9) on a 20/21 Fish 3D. My footbed is also set to size 9.
Still really not sure if i should get the step ons, i see a huge benefit since i ride with only skiers.
If you have any interest in Step On, get them an you won't be disappointed Get stoked for the winter!
@@SearchofSnowboarding How much do you notice that the bindings don't have EST?
@@aMilling not much, the benefits of Step On far out weigh the disadvantages of no EST
@@SearchofSnowboarding Thanks for the quick reply. I think i'll check them out for the next season.
Hey! What are your snowboard pants you're riding with? They look dope!
They are the Strafe Nomad Bib in the Aspen Camo colorway
@@SearchofSnowboarding thanks!!
What size are your board and bindings?
157 Deep thinker with size 9.5 Ions and the medium binding
Thanks for the reply!
@@SearchofSnowboardingdo you think is enough 163W (maximum size od Deep Thinker) for 188cm rider with boot size 13 ?
@@PoleprincessPL Yes, totally
@@SearchofSnowboarding Thanks for response. After your movie I'm starting thinking about X version of Step On's for my new setup (Deep Thinker + Ion), but I'm not riding so aggressive, prefer powder and recreational, sometimes curving. But I'm thinking, for my 110kg and Ion's will be better option than regular Step On's.
What type of board you have?
This is the Burton Deep Thinker, but the board I ride is the Salomon Ultimate Ride and Assassin Pro
Where r your pants from?
They're made by Strafe Outerwear and they're called the Nomad Bib www.strafeouterwear.com/collections/mens-pants/products/nomad-bib-pant
