His later reaction is rather amusing (when the player tends to the wounded owl bear). 'Remember - they don't stay that small forever. They eventually grow up - nothing but beak and claws' (paraphrasing that quote, min you).
Love how almost the whole camp approves including Astarion, but we all know he might be approving for entire different reason.
Someone once suggested that Astarion may identify a bit with owlbears because they're a commonly feared/hated animal since they're super dangerous, like vampires, so Tav being kind to an owlbear might make him happy for that reason. Makes sense to me.
@@StellaMarisma Larian confirmed that's why you get Astarion's approval. It's a really great bit of character writing.

Mine was the same when I see it from the first time.
When Astarion did scared the owlbear I literally yelled "Boy, you're going to catch these hands!"
Apart from his companion quest, I haven't had him in my party since. I gave Karlach some gauntlets that bumped her Dex to 18 and she's been my lockpicker ever since. I'm running a wizard, so anything too hard for her I just cast Knock. That owlbear is my furbaby, and I'm not standing for Astarian's behaviour.
Yeah as soon as astarion tried to snack on me I saw that as reason enough to kill him. I never liked him and would take any excuse to kill him

Karlach is just so adorable!🥺 Meanwhile Astarion is like 'ow look, my midnight snack has arrived'.😋 Admit it, we all turned our heads in confusion when we saw him approve, until the realization of his true intentions hit a second later. Only to have those suspicions confirmed another second later.
He approves of the owlbear cub being fed and cared for likely because it's considered a monstrous underdog compared to, say, the much more popular canine companions (hence I think it's also why he's just neutral to scratch while positive to the owlbear). He even lets it do the cat loaf sit on one of his pillows.
@@oceanicGrimalkin Maybe, but I still think he wants to eat it (he literally calls it a little snack). I think he just prefers owlbear over dog. I mean we already know he likes bears, to the point where he got drunk off one's blood (I don't mean Halsin, although......well, let's not go there💀). And he was practically moaning while drinking Tav's blood. So an owlbear probably falls somewhere in between those two categories. I can see him getting either absolutely sh*t-faced or high af from owlbear blood. What was I talking about again?.......Oh right, yeah no, the cub was definitely a little 'edible' in his eyes if you ask me (sorry, I got distracted there🙂).
@@shibernyan2009 I mean, he wouldn't have let it just stay around and sit on his property whenever it visits if he just liked it as a "snack".
@@oceanicGrimalkin That's because if he so much as looked the wrong way at any of the pets, the rest of the camp would erase him from existence. Though of course he probably forms a teeny tiny bit of attachment after knowing the little snacks for a while as well. He's not heartless (I think). 😅☺️

He probably knows enough not to run up and spook a cub.
He isn't a companion until act 2, at wich point I think is too late for the cub to join your party.

@@morgotp5573 Isn't that a bit late tho? I mean you free it from the goblin camp in act 1, take a good long rest or two and there is is. And that's before you even encounter Halsin for the first time and also way before all the underdark stuff. There should be LOTS of additional long rests before you leave act 1.
I had taken quite a few long rests after rescuing it, and it never showed up. So I made a save, bought some supplies, and started skipping straight to a long rest. It was over 10 long rests for me before I even got this scene, far less when he eventually came back.
I love just the bar of everyone approving in the corner. All my homies love the owlbear cub

All the companions love animals (some for different reasons lmao) in this game and I'm absolutely here for it.

When I first played this game and the owlbear ran off for the first time I was worried he wouldn't come back (obviously did). Gale was the one that scared him off and I was about ready to kill him.

I wonder what decides the companion who pops up behind you. In my case it was Astarion and I thought it might have had to do with us being boyfriends but I wonder if it is actually related to who you’re romancing or just random.
I’m inclined to believe it’s the one you’re romancing. I had to reload a save and Shadowheart was there both times
@@edskisworkshop5346 I think it's based on which option you pick, plus another factor. Not romance because in my game Astarion showed up despite hating my guts
@@emperorlokire7648 I did a custom character so maybe that’s got something to do with it. But I’m also romancing Shadowheart so that’s why I was inclined believe that.
I'm not sure if it's tied to romance partner because i turned down Gale "midnight magic lesson" and went full on with Karlach but in my playthrough Gale is the one show up in this cutscene. (Both of them are in the party)
Some dialogue events while traversing the map have your companions comment based on the position of their icon in the sidebar(the one on the top, who isn't your character, will be the one who reacts), so it might be the case here

So when I found the owlbear nest, i failed an animal handling roll and ended up having to them both :CCCCCC i cried that day

Once I found out that you can pet the owlbear I had to look up how and now all my characters have a pet owlbear
It sensed evil which is why it ran when Astarion spoke…every other time was just coincidence…definitely a coincidence
My one ran away from me every time cos I have bad animal handling. So eventually I never got him

@@captaintazzma2276 it occous every time I enter camp sporadically so there’s no way for me to anticipate when the bear will come and thus I am unprepared. Eventually he just stopped coming lol. Silly bear all he had to do is give me a warning and I’d have easily done it
@@makeytgreatagain6256Speak with Animals lasts until long rests, so you can always keep it up.
@@aerthreepwood8021 yeah… if only I knew that the bear would come at my camp. If only there were an indication that told me to be prepped. Oh well
Mine didn't even show up at the Goblin Camp :( checked in the cave and heard him eating still, even after finishing everything else in Act 1 and long resting 50 times
How long does it take for the Owlbear Cub to find your camp after you rescue him? And if you loot an owlbear egg does it ever hatch?

That super cute owlbear really makes me wanna play BG but I swore to boycott Wizards of the coast over the OGL controversy.
Be happy them: the creators buyed the license. Which means that besides the initial money the developers have, not a single cent of yours is going to Wizards pockets. So Go nuts
@@diogoteixeira4950 kinda sorta yes and no. I do respect the developers for buying the liscense and making a good game, but that was money that still went to Wotc. Kinda like when the local game shop had already paid money to stock their shelves with D&D books. It's sad because I really do enjoy D&D but I don't want to support a company that hates its customers.
